Summary

Supreme Court rules that being drunk is now a defence in rape and murder cases. This is insane. Shouldn t being drunk be a defense only for vehicular manslaughter? And should it be a defence for rape?

00:00:00.000 We got a Supreme Court ruling today, being drunk is a defense for rape and murder, according to the Supreme Court.
00:00:07.320 This was brought in, this was an overturning kind of in a sense, I guess.
00:00:11.360 The courts had ruled that it's not a defense some years ago, but I guess advocates for drunk murders and rapists
00:00:16.860 were effective in pushing long enough to say, no, it is now a defense again.
00:00:22.480 You know, I didn't even, is being drunk a defense for vehicular manslaughter when you ram into pedestrians whilst drunk and driving?
00:00:31.380 I don't think it is, but maybe it is now.
00:00:34.900 And rape? Really?
00:00:37.060 Again, I was always taught, you know, rightly, that the no means no, and it doesn't matter whether that,
00:00:42.300 particularly if the victim is drunk, and whether you're drunk yourself, there's no consent to be had.
00:00:48.200 But where do they get this?
00:00:49.980 Where is there any responsibility?
00:00:52.660 I'm sorry that, you know, lots of people get drunk a lot of times.
00:00:55.660 I drank very heavily for quite a few years.
00:00:58.200 I've been open about that.
00:00:59.180 I don't drink anymore.
00:01:00.480 But you know what?
00:01:01.000 With all the stupid things I've done, I got thrown in a drunk tank for peeing in an inappropriate spot.
00:01:05.540 I got in many fights with, you know, verbally with significant others.
00:01:10.380 I annoyed people.
00:01:11.440 I barfed inappropriately.
00:01:13.120 Never once did I rape or murder anybody.
00:01:15.960 Most people who drink don't, thankfully.
00:01:19.160 It's not an excuse.
00:01:20.260 If somebody gets drunk and rapes or murders somebody, they are dangerous, and something is wrong with them.
00:01:25.320 And it doesn't matter if they were drunk or not.
00:01:27.460 But apparently our luminaries on the Supreme Court think, yeah, I don't know, maybe we'll let that off the hook.
00:01:32.800 It's a defense.
00:01:33.640 This is insane.
00:01:34.320 I mean, this is insane.
00:01:37.160 And I'm certain some, again, defense lawyers for, you know, rapists and murderers are rubbing their hands together, you know.
00:01:44.240 So I guess, and I'm certainly not counseling anybody to commit a crime, but would criminals start thinking about that?
00:01:49.160 You know, if I can manage to chug a bottle of Jack Daniels before doing something dastardly, I will have my excuse in the bag already as to why I did it.
00:01:59.000 And I'll have my defense in place.
00:02:00.440 And again, we're not talking about somebody using that as an excuse to pee on the door of a 7-Eleven like some guy did in Calgary in 91.
00:02:07.380 I'm talking about rapes and murders.
