00:00:00.000 Hello, I'm Melanie Rizdin with the Western Standard. Premier Doug Ford has announced
00:00:12.480 Ontario will not require hospital workers to have mandatory COVID-19 vaccines in an effort
00:00:18.480 to not interrupt the delivery of health care for millions of Ontarians. In October, Ford sent a
00:00:24.560 letter to hospital CEOs and other medical organizations asking for their input on
00:00:29.520 mandating vaccines for medical staff. On November 1, Ontario Health Minister
00:00:34.880 Christine Elliott said after consulting with hospitals and health care groups across the
00:00:39.600 province, they were still waiting for response from some hospitals in order for the government
00:00:44.800 to make its decision. In Wednesday's statement, Ford said he was not prepared to jeopardize the
00:00:50.720 delivery of care to millions of Ontarians and confirmed the province would take a
00:00:55.520 flexible approach by leaving human resourcing decisions up to individual hospitals.
00:01:01.680 Ford highlighted the high vaccination rates among hospital workers and robust infection
00:01:07.280 prevention and controls and said the small number of COVID-19 outbreaks in Ontario hospitals
00:01:13.360 is not worth enforcing a provincial vaccine policy. Ford also pointed to the situation in British
00:01:20.160 Colombia, where over 3,000 health care workers have been terminated for not adhering to the
00:01:25.120 province's mandatory vaccination policy, resulting in cancelled surgeries and diagnostic tests.
00:01:32.320 Quebec has now abandoned theirs altogether because of the significant risk and abrupt loss of thousands
00:01:38.400 of health care workers posed to delivering critical services, said Ford in the statement.
00:01:43.840 Ford said they will continue to monitor the situation in provincial hospitals.
00:01:48.720 The Ontario Medical Association has been calling for a vaccine mandate for health care workers since July.
00:01:55.040 This is definitely a step in the right direction, said lawyer Derek Fromm with WKA Lawyers in Airdrie,
00:02:01.200 who represents a number of clients fighting mandatory vaccination policies in their workplaces.
00:02:06.880 Ontario is a bit different in that they have a three-way relationship, employer, worker and union,
00:02:12.960 said Fromm, adding that mandates fall under labour laws rather than the charter of rights and freedoms.
00:02:19.280 Quote, although Ford is no longer mandating the vaccine, many of the hospitals still are,
00:02:24.720 so it isn't really helping a lot of medical workers in Ontario at this point.
00:02:29.360 In Alberta, you've got Alberta Health Services, which is a government body,
00:02:33.360 the employer, the worker and the union, said Fromm.
00:02:36.640 Quote, because the COVID-19 vaccines have been mandated by the government in Alberta,
00:02:42.560 it's subject to the charter.
00:02:44.640 Ford's decision to remove mandates in Ontario may or may not be
00:02:48.880 precedent-setting for other provinces, but it certainly becomes politically persuasive, said Fromm.
00:02:56.160 Alberta Health Services has also brought in a mandatory vaccination policy for their staff.
00:03:01.520 The Wildrose Independence Party said the Ontario and Quebec moves should mean Alberta follows in their wake.
00:03:08.000 Quote, this is exactly what Wildrose has been fighting for all along.
00:03:12.160 The health freedom of workers cannot be thrown under the bus in the name of vaccine mandates.
00:03:16.960 Let us not ever forget that Jason Kenney's UCP government explicitly promised such mandates
00:03:22.400 would never be allowed in Alberta, said Wildrose Independent Party leader Paul Hinman.
00:03:26.960 Now that Canada's two most populous provinces have stated their intention to cancel the mandates
00:03:32.720 for health care workers, will the government of Alberta finally accept that all Alberta workers
00:03:37.840 have the right to make their own health care choices?
00:03:41.920 For the Western Standard, I'm Melanie Rizdin.
