00:01:20.060 hello hello hello glorious listeners uh this is going to be a bit of an experimental episode of
00:01:31.740 the anarchonomicon podcast um i this is going to be my first solo podcast and i wanted to do
00:01:42.660 something unique experimental in a way um the format of the anarchonomicon podcast has always
00:01:50.260 been uh me with someone else uh me interviewing someone else someone else interviewing me uh me
00:01:57.360 lecturing someone else this we're gonna see if this is possible this is gonna be the first
00:02:03.760 anarchonomicon episode just my voice me presenting something fortunately i am not truly alone uh
00:02:11.660 This episode, I want to sit down and take you through what I consider one of the greatest short stories of all time.
00:02:22.860 One of my personal favorites.
00:02:25.240 H.P. Lovecraft's The Rats in the Walls.
00:02:29.280 This is, I consider, one of the really perfect Lovecraft short stories.
00:02:38.100 The visuals, the geography of the story, the narrative tempo, it somehow captures everything in Lovecraft's thought and vision and his horror at the revelations coming out about the modern world or the world in general.
00:03:03.660 that that the universe you see above you in the night sky is not the universe it's a galaxy there
00:03:12.380 actually billions of those out there and the thing that made you feel so small a speck in all of
00:03:21.240 existence uh that itself is a speck in all of existence uh the revelations that time and space
00:03:31.040 uh are malleable the revelations that um the history the age of the world in the universe is
00:03:40.960 not 6 000 years old as conceived in the bible this uh ancient deep time uh going back to adam
00:03:49.240 6 000 years no no no it's millions of years old billions of years old uh in those darkened
00:03:57.780 eons of antiquity antiquity that antediluvian black nothing anything could be back there 0.66
00:04:06.200 uh the revelations of um the revelations of evolution and the revelation that you are 0.99
00:04:14.080 evolved from lesser life forms in fact your ancestors were degraded apes and like incestuous 0.99
00:04:23.260 tribesmen and that you have cannibals and and sex slaves and rapists and all kinds of 0.99
00:04:31.400 antediluvian horrors buried in the back there that that all the horrifying sacrifice rituals 0.97
00:04:38.380 you see in the most primitive cultures somewhere far enough back in your ancestry that's buried 0.84
00:04:45.560 in there too and that that has left a mark on you that those instincts those nightmarish ideals
00:04:53.040 are buried in there which to us is we see it as kind of obvious um if you've ever approves the uh
00:05:04.940 romance fantasy section of the bookstore the female smut section of the bookstore which is
00:05:13.780 now basically all barnton nobles slowly devoured the entire institution uh you you know that these 0.97
00:05:21.360 instincts are buried in the hearts of all those bookish girls. This is less of a revelation to us.
00:05:27.400 We've had the terrifying, nightmarish fantasies of the male and female imagination, human sexuality
00:05:37.340 laid bare to us to really profound cultural damage. But Lovecraft is experiencing this all
00:05:48.420 when it's fresh. He's experiencing this all when it is a new revelation that only he can see the
00:05:57.360 implications of. Lovecraft is seeing this all, and whereas other people are debating, no, that
00:06:02.720 doesn't feel right, or no, that isn't compelling to me, or oh, this is true, but I'm not actually
00:06:09.240 going to adjust from it. Lovecraft is seeing all these nightmarish implications of the world that
00:06:16.340 science and general research has laid bare in philosophy has uncovered for us. And he's seeing
00:06:26.540 all the horrifying truths behind it. And uniquely, because this is where I consider him one of the
00:06:34.220 greatest philosophers of all time, he has to invent these stories, these horror stories,
00:06:45.260 these long digressing stories to try and convince people of it. Because of course,
00:06:52.040 you can't argue people into something they don't want to believe. You can't argue someone into
00:06:57.960 believing something that they need to, that they want to reject with all their being and they don't
00:07:05.120 want to even contemplate. And they're constantly asking themselves, do I have to believe this?
00:07:11.860 Do I have to believe this?
00:07:13.880 So instead, Lovecraft invents these stories, these ghost stories, these horror stories,
00:07:20.240 to deliver this vision that is nightmarish.
00:07:28.240 He invents this emotion, cosmic horror, eldritch horror,
00:07:32.420 to get people to actually grapple with the implication of,
00:07:36.880 no, you are a speck on a speck of a speck.
00:07:39.800 uh time itself is so incomprehensibly vast you know you are on this seemingly bottomless ocean
00:07:49.000 and what you can and what you can see the hundreds of miles deep and what you can see like three
00:07:56.420 miles to the horizon on other side that's just the surface tension of it that's like the the
00:08:02.640 thinnest three atoms thick uh point where contacts the air of the future uh the
00:08:12.600 the antediluvian the fact that it infects you yourself that all this antediluvian uh deep time
00:08:23.140 evolution shared biology is all there buried inside you that all the miscegenation and all
00:08:30.140 the incest and all the cannibalism and all the human sacrifice rituals and all the nightmarish 1.00
00:08:37.840 primitive primitive dark rituals are there inside you it's in your fucking dna it's in your every 0.99
00:08:47.560 instinct everything you looked at and you thought oh that's kind of hot and then you catch yourself 0.99
00:08:52.840 wait what what all that is in your deep dna it's buried in your brain brain and you can't get it 1.00
00:09:01.980 out there's like a fucking there's an evil rat man there's a fish monster there there's a perverse 1.00
00:09:10.120 and degraded sex slave in your head that's buried in every cell of your body and you're going to 1.00
00:09:16.800 pass it on to your children those demons are in in you this deep time and in fact some of the 0.99
00:09:25.740 worst instincts you have because they're necessary for each five you can't even escape them you could 0.99
00:09:30.540 try to suppress them and take them out but then you'll like your bloodline to a fucking die out 0.99
00:09:35.360 the same way that every every ethnicity that ever evolved to not have like racism and sex 0.99
00:09:43.660 sexism and xenophobia uh we know they died out because there's no ethnicity that doesn't have
00:09:49.540 that uh all that's there buried in you in you and all this is buried deep in the past
00:09:58.400 and the the vast and caring sky is up there they're completely indifferent to you with its
00:10:06.140 vast season infinity that might contain god knows what but all of this is there all this
00:10:13.100 has been laid bare the fact that you're not the center of the universe in fact you're you are like
00:10:17.760 smaller than a mite a mold mold in a kitchen you're the most microscopic organism in a distant
00:10:25.980 dark corner where some odd odd thing has fallen in your kitchen that's how relevant you are to
00:10:32.180 the grand schemes of the universe universe all of that and he has to like convince people of this
00:10:40.320 from what like some some random findings he read about in his article no so he has to
00:10:48.400 create these stories and the rats in the walls i i quite like because it fully captures this
00:10:56.800 the geography um going back from america to this ancient ancient abode in the moors of england
00:11:05.180 tracing his geology back, and then the structure itself going down from the medieval structure,
00:11:14.580 the early modern structure to the medieval structure, to the Roman structure, and then
00:11:19.720 deeper, stranger things beneath. That's all in there, the darkened tales that people don't want
00:11:27.220 speak to him about uh this this vast geography contains this vision that lovecraft has and i find
00:11:38.060 that so extraordinary especially because unlike say at the mountains of madness or the dunwich
00:11:46.780 horror or like any of the the stuff we associate with lovecraft the tentacles cthulhu uh the the
00:11:57.200 monsters from the deep uh this one is very like tame in its visuals there's no cults there's no
00:12:04.940 necronomicon there's no there's no darkened rituals and things being summoned from from
00:12:14.100 non-euclidean space it's all just in the place place and it's all just like a physical thing
00:12:22.640 except it's also in the man it's also buried in his genes in his in his mind in his deep
00:12:33.160 instincts in all the visions that he doesn't want to process or comprehend and all like the
00:12:38.540 darkened stories of his ancestry in him and this i consider probably lovecraft's
00:12:48.420 Sebalest story? Of course, we have the lovely cat, Niggerman, who guides us through the darkened
00:12:55.640 halls. But I consider it really just quite magical for holding all the vision of Lovecraft together
00:13:07.840 in such a simple package, in such a simple vision, in such a visually, you don't need to know any
00:13:17.800 science to to really process this you don't need to have a certain vision of the world you don't
00:13:23.820 have to like contend about any facial facial things the vision the nightmare the horror 0.69
00:13:30.860 is just contained so simply in the story and the implications uh especially now that suddenly race
00:13:41.380 realism and and psychometrics and and genetic diseases and the the weird and horrifying group
00:13:51.820 dynamics that we're now seeing playing out in england and elsewhere that if you get certain
00:13:57.780 groups of ethnicities together in large enough numbers horrifying rape murder cults do actually 0.99
00:14:04.160 fucking form. All of that is contained in this story, and I'm so pleased to share it 0.98
00:14:13.300 with you. Now, please join me for The Rats in the Walls.
00:14:20.840 the rats in the walls by h.p lovecraft on july 16th 1923 i moved into ex-impriory
00:14:37.500 after the last workman has finished his labors the restoration had been a stupendous task
00:14:43.440 for little had remained of the deserted pile but a shell-like ruin yet because of it has been the
00:14:50.500 seat of my ancestors, I let no expense deter me. The place had not been inhabited since the reign
00:14:57.660 of James I, when a tragedy of intensely hideous, though largely unexplained nature had struck the
00:15:04.680 master down, five of his children, and several servants. Driven forth under a cloud of suspicion
00:15:11.720 and terror, the third son, my lineal progenitor, and the only survivor of the horrid line.
00:15:17.580 with this sole heir denounced as a murderer the state reverted to the crown nor had the accused
00:15:24.940 man made any attempt to exculpate himself or gain his property shaken by some horror greater than
00:15:32.460 that of conscience or the law expressing only a frantic wish to exclude the ancient edithus from
00:15:38.980 his sight and memory walter de la poor eleventh baron of bexham fled to virginia and there founded
00:15:46.540 of the family by which by the next century had become known as Delapore. Ex-impriori had remained
00:15:55.840 undehended, though later allotted to the estates of the Norse family, and much study because of
00:16:02.300 its peculiarly composite architecture, an architecture involving Gothic towers resting
00:16:08.040 on a sect on a Saxon or Romanesque structure, whose foundation in turn was of a still earlier
00:16:15.560 order or blend of orders, Roman and even Druidic or native Simaric, if legends speak truly.
00:16:23.900 This foundation was a very singular thing, being merged on one side with the solid limestone of
00:16:31.080 the precipice, from whose brink the priory overlooked a desolate valley three miles west
00:16:36.320 of the village of Ancaster. Architectures and antiquarians loved to examine this strange relic
00:16:43.480 of forgotten centuries, but the country folk hated it. They hated it hundreds of years before when
00:16:49.980 my ancestor lived there, and they hated it now with the moss and mold of abandonment on it.
00:16:56.380 I had not been a day in Ancaster before I knew I came from an accursed house,
00:17:01.980 and this week workmen have blown up Ex-Impriory and are busy obliterating the traces of its
00:17:07.820 foundations. The bare statistics of my ancestry I have always known, though with the fact that
00:17:15.580 my first American forebearer had come to the colonies under a strange cloud. Of details,
00:17:23.680 however, I have been kept wholly ignorant through the policy of reticence always maintained by the
00:17:29.740 Delapores. Unlike our planted neighbors, we seldom boasted of crusading ancestors or other medieval
00:17:37.240 and Renaissance heroes. Nor was any kind of tradition handed down except what may have been
00:17:42.700 recorded in the sealed envelope left before the Civil War by every squire to his eldest son
00:17:48.400 for posthumous opening. The glories we cherished were those achieved since the migration.
00:17:54.700 The glories of a proud and honorable, it's what reserved an unsocial Virginia line.
00:18:01.520 During the war, our fortunes were extinguished, and our whole existence changed by the burning
00:18:06.620 of Carfax, our home on the bank of the James. My grandfather, advanced in years, had perished in
00:18:13.620 that incendiary outrage, and with him the envelope that bound us all to the pass. I can recall the
00:18:20.220 fire today as I saw it then at the age of seven, with the federal soldiers shouting, the women
00:18:26.960 screaming, and the Nero's howling and praying. My father was in the army, defending Richmond,
00:18:32.940 and after many formalities my mother and i were passed through the lines to join him
00:18:37.700 when the war ended we all moved north once my mother had come and i grew to manhood middle
00:18:44.440 age and ultimate walt as a stolid yankee neither my father nor i ever knew what our
00:18:50.680 hereditary envelope had contained and as i merged into the greenness of massachusetts
00:18:56.140 business life i lost all interest in the mysteries which evidently lurked far back
00:19:02.560 in my family tree. Had I suspected their nature, how gladly I would have left an ex-enpriority to
00:19:09.240 its moss, bats, and cobwebs. My father died in 1904, but without any message to leave me,
00:19:19.160 or to my only child, Alfred, a motherless boy of ten, it was this boy who reversed the family or
00:19:26.040 the order of family information, for although I could give him only jesting conjectures about
00:19:32.400 the past he wrote me of some very interesting ancestral legends when the late war took him to
00:19:38.880 england in 1917 as an aviation officer apparently the delapores had a colorful and a perhaps
00:19:46.340 sinister history for a friend of my son's captain edward norris of the royal flying corps dwelt near
00:19:52.460 the family seat at ancaster and related some peasant superstitions which few novelists could
00:19:59.240 equal for wildness and credibility. Norris himself, of course, did not take them seriously,
00:20:06.120 but they amused my son and made good material for his letters to me.
00:20:10.760 It was this legendary which definitely turned my attention to my transatlantic heritage,
00:20:17.640 and made me resolve to purchase and restore the family seed which Norris shooed to Alfred
00:20:22.920 in the picturesque desertion and offered to get for him at a surprisingly reasonable figure,
00:20:30.420 since his own uncle was the present owner. I bought Exum Priory in 1918, but was almost
00:20:37.740 immediately distracted from my plans of restoration by the return of my son as a maimed invalid.
00:20:44.780 During the two years that he lived, I thought of nothing but his care,
00:20:48.060 having even placed my business under the direction of partners in 1921 as i found myself bereaved and
00:20:56.100 aimless a retired manufacturer no longer young i resolved to avert my remaining years with my
00:21:02.080 new possession visiting ancaster in december i was entertained by captain norris a plump amiable
00:21:08.680 young man who had thought much of my son and secured his assistance in gathering plans and
00:21:14.860 anecdotes to guide the coming restoration. Ex-impriory itself I saw, without emotion,
00:21:21.300 a jumble of tottering medieval ruins covered with lichens and honeycombed with rook's nests.
00:21:27.700 Perched perilously upon a precipice and denuded of floors and other interior features,
00:21:33.940 save the stone walls of the separate towers. As I gradually recovered the image of the edifice,
00:21:40.860 as it had been when my ancestor left it over three centuries before,
00:21:45.300 I began to hire workmen for the reconstruction.
00:21:49.200 In every case, I was forced to go outside the immediate locality,
00:21:53.900 for the Ancaster villagers had an almost unbelievable fear and hatred of the place.
00:21:59.620 This sentiment was so great that it was sometimes communicated to the outside laborers,
00:22:04.680 causing numerous desertions.
00:22:06.420 wolson's scope appeared to include both the priory and its ancient family my son had told
00:22:14.040 me that he was somewhat avoided during his visits because he was a delapore and i now found myself
00:22:19.620 subtly ostracized for for like reason until i convinced the peasants how little i knew of my
00:22:25.520 heritage even then they sullenly disliked me so that i had to collect most of the village
00:22:31.940 tradition served the mediation of Norse. What the people could not forget, perhaps, was that I had
00:22:37.700 come to restore a symbol so abhorrent to them, for, rationally or not, they viewed Ex-Impriori
00:22:44.140 as nothing less than a haunt of fiends and werewolves. Piecing together the tales which
00:22:49.700 Norse collected for me, and supplementing them with the account of several savants who had studied
00:22:55.620 the ruins. I deduce that Exempriori stood on the site of a prehistoric temple, a druidical or 0.82
00:23:03.040 anti-druidical thing which must have been contemporary with Stonehenge. That indescribable
00:23:10.520 rites had been celebrated there. Hugh doubted, and there were unpleasant tales of the transference
00:23:16.160 of these rites into the Sibylle worship which the Romans had introduced. Inscriptions still
00:23:22.600 visible in the sub-cellar bore the unmistakable letters of D.I.V. O.P.S. Magna Mat. Signs of the
00:23:32.840 Magna Mater, whose dark worship was once vainly forbidden to Roman citizens. Anticastor had been 0.84
00:23:40.840 the camp of the Third Augustine Legion, as many remains attest, and it was said that the Temple
00:23:48.180 of Sibyl was splendid and thronged with worshippers who performed nameless ceremonies 0.81
00:23:53.120 at the bidding of a frigging priest. Tales added that the fall of the old religion did not end the
00:24:00.000 orgies at the temple, and that the priests lived on in the new fate without real change. Likewise
00:24:07.200 was it said that the rites did not vanish with the Roman power, and that certain among the
00:24:13.260 Saxons added to what remained of the temple and gave it the essential outline it subsequently
00:24:19.140 preserved, making it the center of a cold fear to the half the heptarchy. About 1000 AD, the place 0.99
00:24:27.500 is mentioned in a chronicle as being a substantial stone priory house, a strange and powerful
00:24:33.880 monastic order and surrounded by house how the place is mentioned in a chronicle is being a
00:24:42.360 substantial about 1000 AD the place is mentioned in a chronicle is being a substantial stone priory
00:24:50.920 house of a strange and powerful monastic order of the housing a strange and powerful monastic
00:24:57.060 order and surrounded by extensive gardens which need to know walls to exclude a frightened populace
00:25:03.660 It was never destroyed by the Danes, though after the Norman conquest it must have declined tremendously, since there was no impediment when Henry III granted the site to my ancestor, Gilbert de la Poire, 1st baron in Vaxim, in 1261.
00:25:21.520 Of my family before the state, there is no evil report.
00:25:27.440 But something strange must have happened then.
00:25:30.400 In one chronicle, there is a reference to Adelapeu as cursed of God in 1307.
00:25:37.260 While the village legendary had nothing but evil and frantic fear to tell of the castle
00:25:43.020 that went up on the foundation of the old temple and priory.
00:25:47.140 The fireside tales were of the most grisly description,
00:25:51.500 all the ghastlier because of their frightened reticence and cloudy evasiveness.
00:25:56.600 They represented my ancestors as a race of hereditary demons, 0.96
00:26:00.400 beside whom Gilderets and the Marquis de Sade would have seen the various Tyros, 0.84
00:26:06.920 and hinted whisperingly at their responsibility for the occasional disappearance of villagers through several generations.
00:26:16.720 The worst characters, apparently, were the barons and their direct heirs.
00:26:21.980 At least most was whispered about these.
00:26:23.760 if of healthier inclination it was said an heir would early and mysteriously die to make way for
00:26:31.180 another more typical scion there seemed to be an inner cult in the family preside over by the head
00:26:37.340 of the house and sometimes close except to a few members temperament rather than ancestry was
00:26:43.700 evidently the base of this cult for it was entered by several who married into the family
00:26:48.800 lady margaret trevor from cornwall wife of godfrey the second son of the fifth baron became a favorite
00:26:55.640 bane of children all over the countryside in the demon heroine of a particularly horrible
00:27:00.880 old old bough not yet extinct near the walsh border preservation of baldery too though not
00:27:08.420 illustrating this same point is the hideous tale of lady mary delapour who shortly after her
00:27:15.700 marriage to the earl of shrewsfield was killed by him and his mother both of the slayers being
00:27:21.200 absolved and blessed by the priests to whom they confessed that they what they dared not repeat to
00:27:26.400 the world these misimbalances typical as they were of crude superstition repelled me greatly
00:27:33.640 their persistence and their preach application to so long a line of my ancestors were especially
00:27:41.560 annoying whilst the imputation of monstrous habits proved unpleasant pleasantly reminiscent
00:27:49.240 of the one known scandal of my immediate forebears the case of my cousin young randolph delapour of 1.00
00:27:55.420 carfax who went among the negroes and became a voodoo priest after he returned from the mexican 0.83
00:28:00.660 war i was much less disturbed by the vaguer tales of whales and howlings of the barons 0.71
00:28:07.880 wince-up valleys beneath the limestone cliffs of the graveyard stenches after the spring rains
00:28:14.280 of the floodings of the floundering squealing white thing on which sir john clave's horse had
00:28:21.800 trod one night in a lonely field and of the servant who had gone mad at what he saw in the
00:28:28.560 prairie in the full light in the and at of the servant who had gone mad at what he saw in the
00:28:34.760 priory in the full light of day these things were hackneyed spectral lore and i was at the time a
00:28:42.880 pronounced skeptic the accounts of vanished peasants were less to be dismissed though not
00:28:48.800 especially significant in view of medieval custom prying curiosity meant death and more than one
00:28:55.820 severed head had been publicly shunned on the bastions now faced around ex and priory
00:29:00.820 a few of the tales were exceedingly picturesque and made me wish i learned more of comparative
00:29:07.660 mythology in my youth there was for instance the belief that legion of batwing devils kept
00:29:14.440 witches sabbaths each night at the priory a legion whose sustenance must explain the
00:29:20.900 disproportionate abundance of coarse vegetables harvested in the vast gardens and most vivid of 0.69
00:29:27.820 all, there were the dramatic epic of the rats, the scampering army of obscene birdmen, which had
00:29:34.160 burst forth from the castle three months after the tragedy that doomed it to desertion, the lean,
00:29:41.680 filthy, ravenous army, which had swept all before it and devoured foul cats, dogs, hogs, sheep,
00:29:49.360 and even two hapless human beings before its fury was spent. Around that unforgettable rodent army,
00:29:56.460 a whole separate cycle of myths resolve revolves for it scattered among the village homes and
00:30:03.340 brought curses and horrors in its train such was the lore that assailed me as i pushed to completion
00:30:10.700 with an elderly obstinacy the work of restoring my ancestral home it must not be imagined for
00:30:18.000 a moment that these tales formed my principal psychological environment on the other hand i
00:30:22.840 was constantly appraised and encouraged by Captain Norris and the antiquarians who surrounded and
00:30:28.300 aided me. When the task was done over two years after its commencement, I viewed the great rooms,
00:30:34.580 wainscoted walls, vaulted ceilings, mullion windowed as a broad staircase with a pride
00:30:40.340 which fully compensated for the prodigious expense of the restoration. Every attribute
00:30:45.960 had of the Middle Ages was cunningly reproduced, and the new parts blended perfectly with the
00:30:51.680 walls and foundations. The seat of my father's was complete, and I looked forward to redeeming
00:30:57.480 at last the local fame of the line which ended in me. I would reside here permanently, and prove
00:31:04.300 that Adelapore, for I had adopted again the original spelling of the name, need not be a
00:31:09.520 fiend. My comfort was perhaps augmented by the fact that, although Exumpriori was medievally
00:31:16.520 fitted. Its interior was, in truth, wholly new and free from old vermin and old ghosts alike.
00:31:24.300 As I had said, I moved in on July 16, 1923. My household consisted of seven servants and nine
00:31:32.840 cats, of which latter speeches I'm particularly fond. My eldest cat, Nigger Man, was seven years
00:31:40.140 old and had come with me from my home in Bolton, Massachusetts. The others I had accumulated whilst
00:31:45.860 living with Captain Norris's families during the restoration of the Priory. For five days,
00:31:51.000 our routines proceeded with the utmost placidity. My time being spent mostly in the codification
00:31:57.220 of old family data, I had now obtained some very circumstantial accounts of the final tragedy and
00:32:04.400 the flight of Walter Delapour, which I conceived to be the probable contents of the hereditary
00:32:10.920 paper lost in the fire at carfax it appeared that my ancestor was accused with much reason of having
00:32:16.720 killed all the other members of his household except four servant confederates in their sleep
00:32:22.160 about two weeks after a shocking discovery which changed his whole demeanor but which except by
00:32:27.900 implication he disclosed to no one say perhaps the servants who assisted him and afterwards fled
00:32:33.660 beyond reach this deliberate slaughter which included a father three brothers and two sisters
00:32:42.640 was largely condoned by the villagers and so slackly treated by the law that's
00:32:48.700 perpetrator escaped honored unharmed and undistinguished to virginia the general whispered
00:32:55.700 sentiment being that he had purged the land of an immemorial curse what discovery had prompted
00:33:01.940 an act so terrible i could scarcely even conjecture walter delapour must have known for
00:33:07.960 years the sinister tales about his family so that this material could have gotten given him no fresh
00:33:14.520 impulse had he then witnessed some appalling ancient rite or stumbled upon some frightful
00:33:20.540 and revealing symbol in the priory or its vicinity he was reputed to have been a shy gentle youth of
00:33:26.820 england in virginia he seemed not so much charred or bitter as harassed and apprehensive he was
00:33:34.860 spoken of in the diary of another gentleman adventure francis harley of bellevue as a man
00:33:41.280 of unexampled justice honor and delicacy on july 22nd occurred the first incident which
00:33:49.620 bill lightly dismissed at the time takes on a preternatural significance in relation to latter
00:33:55.320 events. It was so simple as to be almost negligible, and could not possibly have been noticed under
00:34:01.260 the circumstances, for it must be recalled that since I was in a building practically fresh and
00:34:07.500 new except for the walls, and surrounded by a well-bound staff of servitors, apprehension would
00:34:13.020 have been absurd despite the locality. What I afterwards remember is merely this, that my old
00:34:19.300 black cat, whose moves I know so well, was undoubtedly alert and anxious to an extent
00:34:25.440 wholly out of keeping with his natural character. He roved from room to room, restless and disturbed,
00:34:32.700 and sniffed constantly about the walls which formed part of the old Gothic structure.
00:34:39.360 I realize how trite this sounds, like the inevitable dog in the ghost story, which always
00:34:45.180 growls before his master sees this sheet of fear. Yet I cannot consistently suppress it.
00:34:52.360 The following day, a servant complained of restlessness amongst all the cats of the house.
00:34:57.980 He came to me in my study, a loft west room on the second story, with groined arches, black oak
00:35:04.700 paneling, and a triple gothic window overlooking the limestone cliff and desolate valley. 1.00
00:35:10.380 And even as he spoke, I saw the jetty form of nigger man creeping along the west wall 1.00
00:35:15.840 and scratching at the new pails which overlaid the ancient stone. 1.00
00:35:20.580 I told the man that there must be some singular odor or emanation from the old stone,
00:35:26.540 imperceptible to human senses but affecting the delicate organs of cats,
00:35:31.140 even through the new woodwork.
00:35:33.520 This I truly believed, and when the fellow suggested the presence of mice or rats,
00:35:38.260 I mentioned that there had been no rats there for 300 years and that even the field mice in the
00:35:43.980 surrounding country could hardly be found in these high walls where they have never been known to
00:35:49.200 stray. That afternoon I called on Captain Norse and he assured me that it would be quite incredible
00:35:55.300 for field mice to infest a priory in such a sudden and unprecedented fashion. That night,
00:36:03.320 dispensing as usual with a ballet,
00:36:05.440 I retired to the West Tower Chamber,
00:36:07.760 which I had chosen as my own.
00:36:10.300 Reached from the study by a stone staircase
00:36:12.280 and short gallery,
00:36:13.960 the former partly ancient
00:36:15.320 and the latter entirely restored.
00:36:18.360 This room was circular,
00:36:20.380 very high and without Wayne Scotty, 0.72
00:36:22.880 being huge with heiresses,
00:36:25.240 which I had myself chosen in London. 1.00
00:36:29.820 Seeing that nigger man was with me, 1.00
00:36:31.800 i shut the heavy gothic door and retired by the light of the electric bulbs which so cleverly 1.00
00:36:37.960 counterfeited candles finally shifting off the switching off the light and sinking in on the
00:36:45.040 carved and canopied four poster with the venerable cad in his accustomed place at my feet i did not
00:36:52.000 draw the curtains but gazed out at the narrow north window which i face there was a suspicious
00:36:59.100 aura in the sky, and the delicate tranceries of the windows were pleasantly silhouetted.
00:37:05.860 At some time, I must have fallen quietly asleep, for I recall a distinct sense of leaving strange
00:37:12.120 dreams when the cat started violently from his placid position. I saw him in the faint oral glow,
00:37:20.040 head strain forward, four feet on my ankles, and hind feet stretched behind. He is looking
00:37:26.680 intensely at a point on the wall
00:37:28.600 so west of the window, a point
00:37:30.920 which, to my eyes, had nothing to
00:37:32.820 mark it. But towards which
00:37:34.840 all my attention was now directed, 1.00
00:37:36.940 and as I watched, I knew that nigger man 1.00
00:37:38.640 was not vainly excited. 1.00
00:37:40.680 Whether the air is actually moved,
00:37:42.820 I cannot say. I think it did,
00:37:44.880 very slightly.
00:37:46.600 But what I can swear to is that behind
00:37:48.800 it I heard a low, distinct scurrying
00:37:50.920 as of rats or mice.
00:37:53.460 In a moment, the cat had
00:37:54.680 jump bodily on the screening tapestry, bringing the affected section to the floor with his weight,
00:38:02.060 exposing a damp ancient wall of stone patched here and there by the restorers, and devoid of
00:38:07.720 any trace of rodent prowlers. Nigger Man raced up and down the floor by this part of the wall, 0.97
00:38:15.620 clawing the fallen heiress and seemingly trying at times to insert a paw beneath the wall 1.00
00:38:20.840 in the oaken floor he found nothing and after a time returned warily to his place across my feet
00:38:27.800 i had not moved but i did not sleep again that night
00:38:31.560 in the morning i questioned all the servants and found that none of them had noticed anything
00:38:38.340 unusual save that the cook remembered the actions of the cat which had rested on her windowsill
00:38:45.400 This cat had held at some unknown hour in the night,
00:38:48.900 awaking the cook in time for her to see him dart purposely out the open door down the stairs.
00:38:55.260 I drowsed away the noontime and in the afternoon called again on Captain Norse,
00:39:02.000 who became exceedingly interested in what I told him.
00:39:04.800 The odd instance, so slight yet so curious, appealed to a sense of the picturesque
00:39:11.040 and elicited from him a number of reminiscences of local ghostly lore.
00:39:17.860 We were generally perplexed at the presence of rats,
00:39:21.860 and Norris let me subtract in Paris Green,
00:39:24.900 which I had the servants placed in strategic localities when I returned.
00:39:29.980 I retired early, being very sleepy,
00:39:33.020 but was harassed by dreams of the most horrible sword.
00:39:36.480 I seemed to be looking down from an immense height upon a twilight grotto, knee-deep with filth, where a white-bearded demon swineherd drove about with his staff a flock of fungus-flabby beasts, whose appearance filled me with unutterable loathing.
00:39:55.900 then as the swineherd paused and nodded over his task a mighty swarm of rats rained down on the
00:40:03.180 stinky abyss and fell to devouring the beasts and man to devouring beasts and man alike 1.00
00:40:10.200 from this terrific vision i was abruptly awakened by the motions of nigger man 1.00
00:40:15.580 who had been sleeping as usual across my feet this time i did not have to question the source 1.00
00:40:22.020 of his snarls and hisses, and of the fear which made him sink his claws into my ankles.
00:40:29.480 Unconscious of their effect, for on every side of the chamber the walls were alive with
00:40:33.580 nace, nauseous sound, the verminous slithering of ravenous, gigantic rats.
00:40:40.640 There was now no aura to shoo the state of the Eris, the fallen section of which had
00:40:46.880 been replaced, but I was not too frightened to switch on the light.
00:40:50.840 as the bulbs leapt into radiance i saw a hideous shaking all over the tapestry
00:40:57.380 causing so what peculiar designs to execute a singular dance of death this motion disappeared
00:41:05.080 almost at once and sound with it springing out of bed i poked at the uruses with a long handle of a
00:41:12.160 warm warming pan that rested near and lifted one section to see what lay beneath beneath there was
00:41:19.080 nothing but the patched stone walls and even the cat had lost his tense relay realization of
00:41:26.160 abnormal presences when i examined the circular traps that had been placed in the room i found
00:41:32.100 all the openings sprung though no trace remained of what had been caught and had escaped
00:41:37.680 further sleep was out of the question so lighting a candle i opened the door and went out in the
00:41:47.220 gallery, towards the stairs to my study. Nigger Man falling at my heels. Before we had reached 1.00
00:41:53.380 the stone step hour, the cat darted ahead of me and vanished down the ancient flight.
00:41:59.220 As I descended the stairs myself, I became suddenly aware of sounds in the great room below.
00:42:04.740 Sounds of the nature which cannot be mistaken. Yoke-paneled walls were alive with rats,
00:42:12.000 rats scampering and milling whilst nigger man was racing about with the fury of a baffled hunter 1.00
00:42:18.880 reaching the bottom i switched on the lights which did not this time cause the noise to subside 0.99
00:42:26.160 the rats continued their riot sampeting with such force and distinctness that i could
00:42:32.300 finally assign to their motion a definite direction these creatures and in numbers
00:42:39.120 apparently inexhaustible were engaged in one stupendous migration from inconceivable heights
00:42:45.780 to some depth conceivably or inconceivably below i now heard steps in the corridor and in another
00:42:53.980 moment two servants pushed to open the massive doors there is the searching the house for some
00:42:59.560 unknown disturbance which had thrown all the cats into the snarling panic and caused them to plunge
00:43:05.360 precipitately set down several flights of stairs
00:43:08.860 and squat, yowling before the closed door of the sub-cellar.
00:43:14.340 I asked them if they had heard the rats,
00:43:16.820 but they replied in the negative.
00:43:18.980 And when I turned to call their attention to the sounds in the panels,
00:43:22.020 I realized the noise had ceased.
00:43:24.500 With the two men, I went down to the door of the sub-cellar,
00:43:29.340 but found the cats already dispersed.
00:43:32.820 Later, I resolved to explore the crypt below,
00:43:35.360 But for the present, I merely made a round of the traps.
00:43:39.020 All were sprung, yet all were tenantless.
00:43:44.660 Satisfying myself that no one had heard the rats save the felines of me,
00:43:48.340 I sat in my study till morning, thinking profoundly,
00:43:52.300 recalling every scrap of legend I had in earth concerning the building I inhabited.
00:43:58.560 I slept in the forenoon, leaning back in one of my comfortable library chairs,
00:44:04.880 which my medieval plan of furnishing could not banish.
00:44:09.860 Later, I telephoned to Captain Norris,
00:44:12.140 who came over and helped me explore the subseller.
00:44:15.620 Absolutely nothing untoward was found,
00:44:18.460 although we could not refresh a thrill at the knowledge 0.99
00:44:20.800 that this vault was built by Roman hands.
00:44:24.800 Even low arches and massive pillar, 0.92
00:44:27.300 every low arch and massive pillar was Roman, 0.99
00:44:30.360 not the debased Romanesque of the bungling Saxons,
00:44:33.700 for the severe and harmonious classicism of the age of the Caesars.
00:44:40.200 Indeed, the walls abounded in inscriptions familiar to the antiquarians
00:44:43.940 who had repeatedly explored the place,
00:44:46.100 things like P. G. T. Prop, Temp, Donna, and L. Prey vs. Pont, Tiff, Addis.
00:44:56.240 The reference to Addis made me shiver,
00:44:58.180 but recalled Catalyst and knew something of the hideous rites of the Eastern god, 0.99
00:45:04.780 whose worship was so mixed with that of Sybil.
00:45:07.820 Norris and I, by the light of lanterns, tried to interpret the odd and nearly effaced designs
00:45:13.460 on certain irregularly rectangular blocks of stone generally held by the old-to-be altars,
00:45:19.840 but couldn't make nothing of them.
00:45:21.840 We remembered that one pattern, a sort of rayed sun,
00:45:25.700 was held by students to apply a non-Roman origin,
00:45:30.060 suggesting that these altars had nearly been adopted by the Roman priests
00:45:33.260 from some older and perhaps aboriginal temple on the same rites.
00:45:39.240 On one of these blocks were some brown stains, which made me wonder.
00:45:44.260 The largest in the center of the room had certain features on the upper surface,
00:45:48.420 which indicated a connection with fire, probably burnt offerings.
00:45:52.980 such were the sights in the crypt before whose doors the cats had howled and were and where
00:46:00.760 norris and i now determined to pass the night couches were brought down by the servants who 0.99
00:46:06.520 were told not to mind any nocturnal actions of the cats and nigger man was admitted as much for 0.99
00:46:13.700 help as for companionship we decided to keep the great oak door a modern replica with slits for 1.00
00:46:20.040 ventilation tightly closed and with this attended to we were tired with lantern still burning to
00:46:27.360 await what might occur the vaults were buried deep in the foundation of the priory and out
00:46:35.740 undoubtedly far down on the face or the beetling lime of the beetling limestone cliff overlooking
00:46:42.120 the whack waste valley that it had been the goal of the scuffling and unexplained rats
00:46:49.060 i could not doubt the why i could not tell as we lay there expectantly i found my visual
00:46:56.340 vigil occasionally mixed with half-formed dreams from which the uneasy motion of the cat across
00:47:02.240 my feet would rouse me these dreams were not wholesome but horribly like the one i had had
00:47:08.200 the night before, I saw again
00:47:10.060 the twilight grotto and the swineherd
00:47:12.100 with his unmentionable
00:47:13.300 fungious beasts
00:47:16.360 wallowing in filth,
00:47:18.020 and as I looked at these things,
00:47:20.180 they seemed nearer and more to sink,
00:47:22.260 so to sink they could almost observe
00:47:24.120 their features.
00:47:25.520 Then I did observe the flabby features
00:47:27.740 of one of them, and awake with such 1.00
00:47:30.040 a scream that nigger man started up 1.00
00:47:31.720 while Captain Norris, who had not slept, 1.00
00:47:33.760 laughed sincerely.
00:47:35.700 Norris might have laughed more, or perhaps less,
00:47:38.200 Had you known what it was that made me scream?
00:47:42.040 But I not remembered myself till later.
00:47:45.180 Ultimate horror often paralyzes memory in a merciful way. 0.83
00:47:51.920 Norse waked me when the phenomena began.
00:47:53.980 Out of the same frightful dreams, I was called by his gentle shaking and his urging to listen to the cats.
00:48:02.360 Indeed, there was much to listen to, for beyond the closed doors at the head of the stone steps, 1.00
00:48:08.200 was a variable nightmare of feline yelling and clawing whilst nigger man unmindful of his kindred 1.00
00:48:14.860 outside was running excitedly about the bare stone walls in which i heard the same babble 1.00
00:48:21.260 of scurrying rats that had troubled me the night before and a cute terror now rose within me for
00:48:29.140 here were anomalies which nothing could well explain these rats if not the creatures on the
00:48:34.960 madness which i share with the cats alone must be burrowing and sliding in the roman walls i had
00:48:41.140 thought to be on solid limestone blocks unless perhaps the action water through more than 17
00:48:47.880 centuries had eaten winding tunnels which rodents bodies had worn clear and ample but even so the
00:48:55.080 spectral horror was nothing was no less for if these were living vermin who did not why did not
00:49:02.520 norris hear them their disgusting commotion but even so the spectral horror was no less for if 0.97
00:49:10.340 these were living burmans why did not norris hear their disgusting commotion why did he urge me to 1.00
00:49:16.960 watch nigger man and listen to the cats outside and why did he guess wildly and vaguely at what 1.00
00:49:22.560 could have aroused him by the time i managed to tell him as rationally as i could when i thought 0.99
00:49:27.520 I was hearing, my ears gave me the last fading impression of the scurrying, which had retreated
00:49:33.020 still downwards, far underneath the deepest sub-cellars, till it seemed as if the whole
00:49:40.000 cliff below were riddled with questing rats. Norris was not as skeptical as I had anticipated,
00:49:51.740 but instead seemed profoundly moved he motioned me to notice that the cats at the door had seized 1.00
00:49:57.940 their clamor as if giving up on up the rats for loss whilst nigger man had a burst of renewed 0.99
00:50:04.460 restlessness that was clawing frantically around the bottom of the large stone altar 1.00
00:50:09.060 in the center of the room which was nearer norris's couch than mine
00:50:12.980 my fear of the unknown was at this point very great something astounding had occurred and i
00:50:21.020 saw that Captain Norris, a younger, stouter, and presumably more naturally materialistic man,
00:50:25.800 was affected fully as much as myself. Perhaps because of his long and intimate familiarity
00:50:31.440 with the local legend, we could, for the moment, do nothing but watch the old black cat as he pawed
00:50:37.800 with decreasing fervor at the base of the altar, occasionally looking up and mewing to me in that
00:50:44.620 persuasive manner which he used when he wished me to perform some favor for him.
00:50:48.880 Norris now took a lantern close to the altar 1.00
00:50:52.260 and examined the place where nigger man was pawing 1.00
00:50:54.460 pawing silently 1.00
00:50:55.980 kneeling and scraping away
00:50:58.100 the lichens of sentries 1.00
00:50:59.280 which joined the massive pre-Roman block 0.94
00:51:01.780 to the tessellated fours 0.84
00:51:03.860 he did not find anything
00:51:05.920 I was about to abandon his effort
00:51:07.740 when I noticed a trivial circumstance
00:51:10.120 which made me shudder
00:51:11.340 even though it implied nothing more
00:51:13.940 than I had already imagined
00:51:15.500 I told him of it
00:51:16.720 We both looked at its almost imperceptible manifestation
00:51:21.420 with the fixedness of fascinated discovery and acknowledgement.
00:51:26.300 It was only this that the flame of the lantern set down near the altar
00:51:29.900 was slightly but certainly flickering from a draft of air,
00:51:34.940 which it had not before received,
00:51:37.080 and which came indubitably from the crevice between the floor and altar
00:51:42.720 where Norris was scraping away the lichens.
00:51:46.720 We spent the rest of the night in the brilliantly lit study, nervously discussing what we should do next.
00:51:52.400 The discovery of some vault deeper than the deepest known masonry of the Romans underlay this recursive pile.
00:52:00.180 Some vault unsuspected by the curious antiquarians of three centuries would have been sufficient to excite us without any background of the sinister.
00:52:09.820 As it was, the fascination became twofold, and we paused and dealt whether to abandon our search and quit the Priory forever in superstitious caution, or to gratify our sense of adventure and brave whatever horrors might await us in the unknown depths.
00:52:27.180 By morning we had compromised and decided to go to London to gather a group of archaeologists and scientific men fit to cope with the mystery.
00:52:35.200 It should be mentioned that before leaving the Subsar, we had vainly tried to move this central altar, which we now recognize as the gate of the new pit of nameless fear.
00:52:46.900 What secret would open the gate, wiser men than we would have to find?
00:52:52.380 During many days of London, Captain Orr Norris and I presented our facts, conjectures, and legendary anecdotes to five eminent authorities.
00:53:01.340 all men who could be trusted to respect any family disclosures which future explorations might develop.
00:53:09.580 We found most of them little-disposed scoff, but instead intensely interested and sincerely sympathetic.
00:53:18.180 It is hardly necessary to name them all, but I may say that they included Sir William Brinton,
00:53:24.640 whose excavations in the Troad excited most of the world in their day.
00:53:29.860 As we all took the train for Ancaster, I felt myself poised on the brink of frightful revelations,
00:53:37.140 a sensation symbolized by the air mourning among the many Americans
00:53:41.320 at the unexpected death of the President on the other side of the world.
00:53:46.800 On the evening of August 7th, we reached Exum Priory,
00:53:51.320 where the servants assured me that nothing unusual had happened. 0.98
00:53:54.660 The cats, even old Migger Man, had been perfectly placid. 1.00
00:53:59.860 And not a nothing unusual had occurred. 0.99
00:54:04.100 The cad, even a trap in the house, had been sprung.
00:54:10.600 We were to begin exploring on the following day,
00:54:14.940 awaiting which I assigned wall-pointed rooms to all my guests. 1.00
00:54:19.800 I myself retired to my own tower chamber, with nigger men across my feet. 1.00
00:54:24.880 Sleep came quickly, but hideous dreams assailed me. 1.00
00:54:28.560 There was a vision of a Roman feast, like that of Tremaclio, with a whore in a covered platter. 0.99
00:54:38.480 Then came that damned wolf recurrent thing about the swineherd and his filthy drove in the twilight grotto. 0.99
00:54:46.160 Yet when I woke, it was the full daylight, with normal sounds in the house below. 0.99
00:54:51.240 The rat's living or spectral had not troubled me, and Nigger Man was quietly asleep. 0.62
00:54:57.720 On going down, I found that the same tranquility had prevailed elsewhere, 0.99
00:55:02.180 a condition which one of the assembled sabants, a fellow named Thornton, 0.94
00:55:08.080 devoted to the psychic, rather absurdly laid to the fact
00:55:12.620 that I had now been shewn the things which certain forces had wished to show me.
00:55:19.940 All was now ready, and at 11 a.m., our entire group of seven men,
00:55:25.320 bearing powerful electric searchlights and implements of excavation,
00:55:29.240 went down to the sub-cellar and bolted the door behind us.
00:55:33.080 Negerman was with us, for the investigators found no occasion to despise his excitability
00:55:38.240 and were indeed anxious to be present in case of obscure rodent manifestations.
00:55:44.300 We noted the Roman inscriptions and unknown altar designs only briefly,
00:55:49.900 for three of the savants had already seen them and all knew their characteristics.
00:55:53.540 Prime attention was paid to the momentous cellar altar, and within an hour, William Brighton had caused it to tilt backwards, balanced by some unknown species of counterweight.
00:56:07.980 There now lay revealed such a horror as it would have overwhelmed us had we not been prepared.
00:56:15.720 Though a nearly square opening in the tile of four, sprawling on the flight of stone steps so prodigiously worn that it was little more than an inclined plane in the center, was a ghastly array of human or semi-human bones.
00:56:32.020 Those which retained their collocation as skeletons shooed attitudes of panic fear, and overall were the marks of rodent gnawing. 0.97
00:56:41.460 The skulls denoted nothing short of utter idiocy, cretinism, or primitive semi-apedom, or primitive semi-apedom. 0.97
00:56:53.380 Above the hellish-belittered steps arched to the sending passage, seemingly chiseled from a solid rock, and conducting a current of air, 0.98
00:57:03.940 This current was not a sudden and noxious rest as from a closed vault,
00:57:09.020 but a cool breeze with something of freshness in it.
00:57:13.000 We did not pause long, but shivering began to clear a passage down the steps.
00:57:18.780 It was then that Sir William, examining the hewn walls,
00:57:21.740 made the odd observation that this passage, according to the direction of the strokes,
00:57:27.680 must have been chiseled from beneath.
00:57:30.380 i must be very deliberate now and choose my words
00:57:35.760 after plowing down a few steps amidst the gnawed bones we saw that there was light ahead
00:57:44.180 not any mystic phosphorescence but a filtered daylight which could not come except from
00:57:50.780 unknown fissures in the cliff that overlooked the waste valley that such fissures had escaped
00:57:57.120 noticed from outside was hardly remarkable for not only is the valley wholly uninhabited but the
00:58:03.280 cliff is so high and in beetling that only an aeronaut could study its face in detail a few
00:58:11.680 steps more and our breasts were literally snatched from us by what we saw so literally that thornton
00:58:17.940 the psychic investigator actually fainted in the arms of the dazed man who stood behind him nor is
00:58:24.900 his plump face, utterly white and flabby, simply cried out inarticulately, whilst I
00:58:31.820 think that what I did was to gasp or hiss and cover my eyes. The man behind me, the
00:58:37.880 only one of the party older than I, croaked with hackneyed, my God, in the most cracked
00:58:45.500 voice I ever heard. Of seven cultivated men, only Sir William Brinton retained his
00:58:52.920 composure, a thing most to his credit because he led the party and must have seen the site first.
00:58:59.940 It was a twilight grotto of enormous height, stretching way farther than any eye could see,
00:59:07.460 a subterraneous world of limitless mystery and horrible suggestion. There were buildings and
00:59:14.460 other architectural remains. In one terrific glance, I saw a weird pattern of temuli,
00:59:20.220 a savage circle of monoliths, a low-domed Roman ruin, a sprawling Saxon pile, and an early English
00:59:29.240 edifice of wood. But all these were dwarfed by the ghoulish spectacle presented by the general
00:59:36.080 surface of the ground, for yards about the steps extended an insane tangle of human bones,
00:59:43.240 or bones at least as human as those on the steps. Like a foaming sea they stretched,
00:59:48.520 some fallen apart and others wholly or partly articulated as skeletons.
00:59:53.600 These later invariably in posture or demonic frenzy,
00:59:57.700 either fighting off some menace or clutching other forms with cannibal intent.
01:00:04.480 When Dr. Trask, the anthropologist, had stopped to classify the skulls,
01:00:09.880 he found a degraded mixture which utterly baffled him.
01:00:12.880 they're mostly lower than the pilled down man in the scale of evolution but in every case
01:00:20.620 definitely human many were of higher grade and a very few were the skulls of supremely
01:00:27.320 insensitively developed types all the bones were gnawed mostly by rats but somewhat by others
01:00:34.620 of the half-human drobe. Many of them were many tiny bones of rats, fallen members of the lethal
01:00:47.240 army which closed in the ancient epic. I wonder that any human among us lived and kept his sanity
01:00:56.800 through that hideous day of discovery. Not Hoffman or Huseman could conceive a scene more
01:01:02.700 wildly incredible more frantically repellent or more gothically grotesque than the twilight grotto
01:01:09.160 through which we seven stared each stumbling on revelation after revelation and trying to keep
01:01:16.480 from the nonce from thinking of the events which must have taken place there three hundred years
01:01:21.800 or a thousand or two thousand or ten thousand years ago it was the antechamber of hell and
01:01:28.400 Poor Thornton feigned again when Trask told him that some of the skeleton things must have descended as quadrupeds through the last twenty or more generations.
01:01:38.760 Horror piled on horror as we began to interpret the architectural remains.
01:01:44.520 the quadruped things with their occasional recruits from the biped class had been kept 1.00
01:01:52.100 in stone pens out of which many out of which they must have broken in their last delirium of hunger 0.99
01:01:59.040 or rat fear there had been great herds of them evidently fattened on the coarse vegetables
01:02:05.640 who remains could be found as some sort of poisonous ensilage at the bottom of a huge stone
01:02:11.980 been older than Rome. I knew now why my ancestors had had such excessive gardens.
01:02:19.380 Would to heaven I could forget. The purpose of the herds did not have to ask.
01:02:30.400 Sir William, standing with his searchlight in the Roman ruin, translated aloud the most
01:02:35.420 shocking ritual I had ever known, and told of the diet of the antediluvian cult which the
01:02:41.480 priests of Sybil found and miggled with their own. Norris, used as he was to the trenches,
01:02:48.020 could not walk straight when he came out of the English building. It was a butcher shop and
01:02:53.360 kitchen. He had expected that. There is too much to see familiar English implements in such a place
01:03:00.220 and to read familiar English graffiti there. Some is recent is in 1610. I could not go to that
01:03:08.300 building that building whose demon activities were stopped only by the dagger of my ancestor
01:03:13.340 walter de la poor what i did venture to enter was a low saxon building whose oaken door had fallen
01:03:20.920 and there i found a terrible row of 10 stone cells with rusty bars three head tenants all
01:03:28.040 skeletons of high grade and on their bony phone and on the bony four finger one i found a seal
01:03:35.580 ring with my own coat of arms. Sir William found a vault with far older cells below the Roman
01:03:43.120 chapel, but these cells were empty. Below them was a low crypt with cases of formerly arranged
01:03:51.260 bones, some of them bearing terrible parallel inscriptions carved in Latin, Greek, and the
01:03:57.040 tongue of Phrygia. Meanwhile, Dr. Trask had opened one of the prehistoric tumuli and brought the
01:04:05.140 light skulls which were inside more human and brought to light skulls which were slightly more
01:04:12.740 human than a gorilla and which bore indescribable ideographic carvings. Through all this horror my
01:04:21.120 cat stopped unperturbed. Once I saw him monstrously perch atop a mountain of bones
01:04:28.260 and wondered at the secrets that may lie behind his yellow eyes having grasped to some slight
01:04:36.040 degree the frightful revelation of this twilight era an area area so hideously foreshadowed by my
01:04:44.000 recurrent dreams we turned to that apparent boundless depth of midnight
01:04:48.760 depth of midnight cavern where no ray of light from the cliff could penetrate
01:04:54.220 We shall never know what sightless Stygian worlds yawned beyond this little distance we went. 1.00
01:05:03.020 For it was decided that such secrets are not good for mankind. 1.00
01:05:07.320 But there was plenty to engross as close at hand,
01:05:10.480 for we had not gone far before the searchlights shooed that accursed affinity of pits in which the rats had feasted,
01:05:17.640 and in whose some lack of replenishment had driven the ravenous rodent army
01:05:21.820 first to turn on the living herd and the starving herds of starving things
01:05:27.000 and then to burst forth from the priory in that historic orgy of devastation
01:05:32.440 which the peasants will never forget.
01:05:36.480 God, those carrying black pits of sod-picked bones and open skulls,
01:05:43.060 Those nightmare chasms choked with the pithcathrapoid Celtic, Roman, and English bones of countless unhollowed centuries.
01:05:54.440 Some of them were full, and none can say how deep they had once been.
01:05:59.920 Others were still bottomless to our searchlights, and people by unnamed fancy, unnameable fancies.
01:06:06.960 what i thought of the hapless rats that stumbled into such traps amidst the blackness of their
01:06:13.200 quest in the grizzly tartarus once my foot slipped near some horribly yawning brink and i had a
01:06:21.600 moment of ecstatic fear i must have been musing a long time for i could not see that any of the
01:06:26.960 party but the plump plump captain norris then there came a sound from that inky boundless
01:06:33.280 farther distance than I thought I knew, and I saw my old black cat dart past me like a winged
01:06:40.940 Egyptian god, straight into the illuminate, illimitable gulf of the unknown. But I was not
01:06:48.520 far behind, for there was no doubt after another second that was the elder scurrying of those
01:06:54.220 fiend-born rats, always questing for new horrors, and determined to lead me on even unto the
01:07:02.160 to those gripping caverns of Earth's center 0.80
01:07:05.500 where near Larla Hotep, the mad-faceless god, 0.99
01:07:09.920 howls blindly to the piping of two amorphous idiot flute players. 0.98
01:07:15.400 My searchlight expired, but still I ran. 0.97
01:07:19.280 I heard voices and yowls and echoes,
01:07:21.680 but above all, these gently rose that impious, insidious scurrying,
01:07:28.040 gently rising rising as if the stiff floated corpse is gently rising above an oily river
01:07:34.960 that flows under endless onyx bridges to a black putrid sea something bumped into me something
01:07:41.700 soft and plump it must have been the rats the viscous gelatinous ravenous army that feast
01:07:47.880 on the dead and the living why shouldn't rats eat a delapore as a delapore eats forbidden things 0.99
01:07:54.120 The war ate my boy, damn them all 0.99
01:07:57.000 And the Yanks ate Carfax with flames 1.00
01:08:00.120 And burned Grand Sire Delapore in the secret 1.00
01:08:02.480 No, no, I tell you, I am not that demon swineherd in the twilight grotto 0.95
01:08:07.120 It was not Edward Norris' fat face on that flabby fungus thing
01:08:12.440 Who says I am a Delapore?
01:08:15.260 He lived, but my boy died
01:08:17.580 Shall Norris hold the lands of a Delapore? 0.87
01:08:21.120 It's voodoo, I tell you, that spotted snake 0.83
01:08:23.380 curse you Thornton. I'll teach 1.00
01:08:25.780 you to faint out what my
01:08:26.900 family do. It's blood though
01:08:29.420 skinkered. I'll learn ye how 1.00
01:08:31.460 to gust. What do you swink 1.00
01:08:33.520 in me thinking with? 0.98
01:08:35.860 Magna mater, magna mater
01:08:37.560 Addis, diad
01:08:39.380 go aviul
01:08:40.460 anna olden, augus

01:08:44.900 dunnast du hot, orch
01:08:46.840 augus lisat, oldle, oldle
01:08:49.480 rive kukul.
01:08:50.740 This is what they say I said 0.99
01:08:53.920 When they found me in that blackness
01:08:57.160 After three hours
01:08:58.560 Found me crouching in the blackness
01:09:01.920 Over the plump, half-eaten body
01:09:04.580 Of Captain Norse
01:09:05.920 With my own cat leaping and tearing at my throat
01:09:09.740 Now they have blown up Exxon Priory 1.00
01:09:13.460 Taken my nigger man away from me 1.00
01:09:16.260 And shut me into this barred room 0.99
01:09:19.420 at Hanwell with fearful whispers about my heredity and experiences. Thornton is in the next room,
01:09:26.920 but they prevent me from talking to him. They are trying to suppress most of the facts concerning
01:09:33.580 the Priory. When I speak of poor Norse, they accuse me of a hideous thing, but they must 1.00
01:09:40.900 know that I did not do it. They must know that it was the rats, the slithering, scurrying rats, 0.99
01:09:47.060 whose scampering will never let me sleep. 0.83
01:09:50.500 The demon rats that race behind the paddings in this room 0.95
01:09:53.620 and beck me down to greater horrors than I have ever known. 0.97
01:09:57.800 The rats they can never hear. 0.95
01:10:00.020 The rats.
01:10:01.520 The rats in the walls.
01:10:13.100 Ah, ah, dear listener, I love this story.
01:10:17.060 so much. I love the magic of the story. I love the progression. I love the tempo. I love the
01:10:24.720 sudden ending. I love the language. I love everything to do with the story. I love the
01:10:32.120 philosophy behind it. I love the vision of history. I love the tale of the horror Lovecraft is trying
01:10:45.180 to unlock. It's truly magical. One of my great favorites. And you see how restrained it is.
01:10:56.280 Despite how obscene the descriptions are, how vast the revelation is, despite the
01:11:06.600 picturesque geography that's almost like a model, like you've built a model of this 1.00
01:11:12.580 of this house you know just had the downwards layers from the topmost tower with nigger men 1.00
01:11:19.700 sleeping on the bed to uh the fathomless pits below like just a cutaway in a posters or like 1.00
01:11:29.140 actually built on a table and yet it's so restrained compared to everything else lovecraft
01:11:35.820 does uh it's so limited uh the there's no tentacles there's no uh there's no lost ancient
01:11:45.980 gods there's no cults there's no black rituals there's no spells there's no non-euclidean
01:11:51.820 geometry it's a it's a house you know it's a house a guy has to rebuild himself
01:11:58.840 and and yet just within that just within like finding a hidden subsub basement
01:12:07.900 uh you know one of the the oldest tales in all of gothic fiction just finding a hidden
01:12:15.160 subsub basement and then venturing deeper and finding you know lost catacombs uh tales old
01:12:24.340 his time uh just within that setup lovecraft lays out his entire philosophy his entire recoiling
01:12:34.740 horror at the fastness of of deep time which like objectively isn't that deep like uh he
01:12:43.720 hints that these rituals might have been going on for 10 000 years which is like
01:12:50.240 And to the Luvian, it's older than the biblical universe, you know, which is supposed to be 6,000 years old.
01:12:56.820 Yet in the scope of like, imagine history, it's like what science and like basic research has revealed about the age of the world. 0.92
01:13:11.560 Like, it's a very small blink, and yet the degraded apes of the thousand generations that have been prisoner in there, the skeletons that show that they have been descended back to quadruped for 20 generations, 0.53
01:13:33.860 the degraded apes the the post-human domesticated herds the demon rats uh within that is contained
01:13:45.660 the entirety of of Lovecraft's eldritch horror and the fact that it's in the blood it's infecting 0.63
01:13:53.860 it it's infecting uh the old man Delapore it's still in there it's in the back of his hindbrain 0.82
01:14:01.640 Just like the terrible, the terrible sexualities of women who long for chains, remembering their hindbrain, remembering some deep experience of their ancestral 444 mothers. 0.92
01:14:21.100 Well, there's the blackened arcades of ancient prehistorical antiquity, the evolutionary bottlenecks around the mention of warfare and slavery, and all the horrors attendant, the monstrosities that were carried out when the domestication of animals was first invented, but upon people themselves. 1.00
01:14:49.260 the the descent the fact that that female breast tissue is eternally developed the same way that
01:14:59.140 uh that domestic cows have breast tissue uh before they start lactating
01:15:05.860 all all these darkened darkened horrors all these little things that are just hinted or
01:15:13.940 buried in the subconscious or only exist in fleeting glimpses of the prehistoric or like
01:15:21.140 the the grim writing writings of like far-right schizoids lovecraft captures it all in such a
01:15:30.820 simple and beautiful package oh i love it and i hope hope you love it too i hope this has been
01:15:38.680 a good introduction for you to his work and to the questions of these antitheluvian subjects.
01:15:52.460 I find these questions, these questions of what human biology actually is, how it intersects with
01:16:02.820 ancient pre-christian religious practices because it's not just it's not just the syrians or the
01:16:11.540 aztecs that have elaborate human sacrifice rituals if you go back to the ancient germans
01:16:17.440 and the ancient romans and like the spartans famously you find detailed elaborate human
01:16:24.360 sacrifice rituals recounted by various sources that are all designed to bring various things
01:16:32.180 about and the famous examples that we have are of course you know the spartans sacrifice all the
01:16:40.440 the weaker like lame children uh the germans uh played like these odd games with uh their slave 0.69
01:16:50.380 women to to make the the least proud or the most like shameless like trick them into volunteering 0.98
01:17:03.120 to be sacrificing as in rituals to produce uh more prideful and violent descendants 1.00
01:17:11.040 descendants and you know produce the shockingly masculine uh features of german women i've
01:17:19.140 written about this uh i'll link it in the show notes my piece on feral aryan femininity uh the
01:17:25.960 sacrifice rituals of the my deep dive into the sacrifice rituals of the ancient germans
01:17:31.080 but this these blackened arc arcades of unrecorded time that now we're unlocking 0.57
01:17:42.820 looking through the genetic records and finding all the the horrors of the of the origin of
01:17:52.440 european and and other men uh which of course to communists and and various liberal thinkers
01:18:03.640 really tried to bury like a lot of the stuff um is accounted or hinted at in
01:18:10.740 And most of the pre-19th and most of the 19th century histories, the migratory invasions, the vast displacements of people, these are accounted and yet liberal thinkers and like university professors who are basically like priests of humanism all tried to dismiss these.
01:18:31.220 And famously, it was repeated eternally in anthropology that pottery is not people.
01:18:40.080 That when you see pottery styles change in regions, that totally doesn't correlate with a violent conquest. 0.98
01:18:48.260 No, ancient man was peaceful, which we now know is bullshit. 0.83
01:18:51.680 because we can do genetic analyses and we can see that all those wars that are in the ancient records 0.96
01:19:01.820 and all the exchanges accounted by the archaeology and all the changes in pottery and other styles
01:19:07.580 accounted by the archaeology, all that directly ties to war and slave capture
01:19:14.840 and all these genetic changes and exterminations and genocides.
01:19:26.100 And much like Lovecraft's maddened heroes,
01:19:33.420 for a hundred years, academia has flinched away from this
01:19:36.980 or tried to proffer some communist Eden,
01:19:44.360 a primitive man living in peace until capitalism corrupts him.
01:19:48.940 But of course, we all subconsciously know it's there.
01:19:55.060 We all feel it in our hindbrains
01:19:56.980 whenever we feel something very untowards,
01:20:00.700 towards a violent film or some sexual imagery.
01:20:06.980 We all feel that, like, scurrying of the rats in the wallows in the back of our hindbrains.
01:20:14.160 And Lovecraft captures that perfectly, and he shows it perfectly in a way that you would
01:20:22.000 not emotionally accept if it was an argument.
01:20:25.380 Yet in this fictional story, this parable of going back and tearing through the ancestry
01:20:33.560 of one guy in one house in one like specific region of england going back across the oceans
01:20:42.180 to england rebuilding this ancient priory and then digging into the sub basements you get this
01:20:48.300 parable of of of what has actually happened scientifically in the world of genealogy in
01:20:58.280 the world of anthropology, in the world of deep genetic history, in the world of basically
01:21:06.060 all the base right-wing science, dinging back into these rumor-shadowed priories of ill
01:21:20.540 repute that, oh, it's gorgeous. I hope you appreciate this, dear reader. And I hope to do
01:21:32.640 more works like this. More dramatic readings, longer works. You listeners out there, stay glorious.
01:21:50.540 Thank you.
01:22:20.540 We'll be right back.
01:22:50.540 We'll be right back.
01:23:20.540 Thank you.
01:23:50.540 Thank you.
01:24:20.540 We'll be right back.
01:24:50.540 We'll see you next time.
01:25:20.540 Thank you.
