00:00:00.000 Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and folk of all ages, you know what time it is.
00:00:30.000 It is a brand new month, so it's time to go over the holidays, holy days, and days of remembrance for the month of July.
00:00:39.580 And that starts today!
00:00:43.840 Friday, July 4th, is our Day of Remembrance for Sveinbjorn Bientesson.
00:00:50.500 We follow that up on July the 15th with our Day of Remembrance for Alexander Rudd Mills.
00:00:56.840 And on July 19th, the observance day for Sigur Blotz.
00:01:05.100 What are these days? Who are these men?
00:01:09.660 We'll tell you about it, and let's get down to it.
00:01:14.040 We start now.
00:01:17.600 Today, Friday, July 4th, we hold the Day of Remembrance for
00:01:23.460 Ás herriar Góthi Sveinbjörn Bientensen, born July 4th, 1924, passed away December
00:01:32.000 23rd, 1993. Ás herriar Góthi Sveinbjörn Bientensen entered Midgater on July 4th, 1924.
00:01:43.240 He is known for reviving Ásatru in Iceland, having the Æsir be recognized by the Icelandic
00:01:49.520 government and forming the Ausatruar Feligith for that purpose.
00:01:55.760 While his organization is no longer what he created it to be, his work in the early reforging
00:02:02.740 of Ausatru is forever honored by the Ausatru Folk Assembly.
00:02:08.280 Sveinbjorn lived his entire life in Western Iceland, with much of his early adulthood
00:02:14.180 spent as a poet and sheep farmer.
00:02:16.580 He was also married and sired two sons with his wife, Svon Tridhyr, in the 1960s.
00:02:25.200 The winter of 1972 saw the beginnings of Sveinbjorn's greatest deeds, as he and three friends would meet in the Reykjavik Café to discuss Austeru.
00:02:36.980 They quickly decided that the faith of their ancestors was one to be practiced as a community,
00:02:43.600 as one folk, and began their work to make this a reality.
00:02:49.920 These four men were the earliest leading figures of the Ausatruar Freilagief, Ausherrleger
00:02:56.160 Sveinbjorn, future Ausherrleger Jörmünder Inge Hansen, Gotti Thorstein Gutgensen, and
00:03:04.780 Theosophist Dagr Þorlífsson.
00:03:08.940 Sveinbjörn described the revival of Icelandic Æsatrú as the desire that Icelanders could
00:03:17.020 have their own faith and nourish it in no less than imported religions.
00:03:24.140 Dagr emphasized the return to nature and rejection of the negatives of industrial civilization.
00:03:32.060 The Asatrua Arfelegith was officially formed on the first day of summer in 1972, with Sveinbjorn
00:03:39.520 very soon after being named Elsherjargothi.
00:03:44.560 Just before the year 1972, Elsherjargothi Sveinbjorn and Gothi Thorstein sought official
00:03:51.820 government recognition for our faith.
00:03:55.020 They visited Olafur Johannesson, the Icelandic Minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs.
00:04:03.160 He initially thought the two Gothar were joking about their request, but then asked for paperwork
00:04:09.320 to be filled out when he realized that they were serious.
00:04:13.580 Shortly after Sveinbjorn and Thorstein exited the building, the power in the center of town
00:04:18.660 went out due to a large and sudden thunderstorm, showing that the Lord Thor himself gave a
00:04:25.000 stamp of approval.
00:04:27.700 Many Christian Icelanders at the time even viewed this as a sign.
00:04:32.000 The Bishop of Iceland and others recommended denying the request for recognition as the
00:04:37.320 faith was and is folkish in nature.
00:04:41.540 After another five months or so of discussion and paperwork, the Ausatruar Vellegith was
00:04:47.160 was officially recognized by the government of Iceland as a religious organization in
00:04:52.100 May of 1973. This gave them the rights of any other church, marriage, share of the church
00:05:00.000 tax, etc., which they still hold to this day. On August 5th of 1973, Æsherjörgöthi Sveinbjörn
00:05:09.000 led the first public lot in nearly 1,000 years. The right took place at his farm in heavy
00:05:16.660 reign under the statue of Lord Thor, who had intervened on their behalf eight months earlier.
00:05:24.400 A local newspaper described the bloat as vigorous and energetic.
00:05:30.260 As Hagergothi Sveinbjorn held his title until his death around the year of 1993.
00:05:37.140 He lived a simple but happy life on his farm without many luxuries.
00:05:43.600 He was an author and poet, having published eight different written works and three different
00:05:48.680 musical recordings.
00:05:51.100 He was said to be soft-spoken and even a bit shy, but his thunderous impact on our native
00:05:56.960 faith more than made up for this.
00:06:00.880 Despite standing nearly alone in his mission to re-establish Icelandic loyalty to the Æsir,
00:06:07.140 he never wavered or compromised in his duty to gods and folk.
00:06:11.660 His resolve was so mighty that even Lord Thor himself intervened to sway the minister's
00:06:17.540 decision to recognize the Asatruar Feligith.
00:06:21.980 Heel, as heel at the Sveinbjörn, the Intensin.
00:06:27.920 And following that, a little later in the month on July 15th, is our Day of Remembrance
00:06:33.040 for Alexander Rudd Mills, born July 15th, 1885.
00:06:40.060 Passed away April 8th, 1964.
00:06:44.540 Born in Tasmania, Australia, Alexander Rudd Mills was a barrister, author, and early proponent for the revival of our ancestral faith.
00:06:55.800 The Alcetru Folk Assembly honors him with a Day of Remembrance every year on the 15th of July,
00:07:01.440 and Dorshoth holds a shrine in his name.
00:07:05.160 While there is not a great deal of knowledge on his early life, we do know that Mills attempted
00:07:12.640 to serve in the Australian Armed Forces in World War I, but was rejected on medical grounds.
00:07:20.280 Regardless of this rejection, he devoted his life to serving our folk and honoring our
00:07:25.560 gods by establishing the Anglican Church of Odin.
00:07:31.560 Alexander Rudd Mills was something of an outlier amongst our folk heroes, as he was one of
00:07:38.540 the first people to embrace what we call forward-facing Alcetrube.
00:07:43.060 He established a real church with hymns, vigils, virtues, and communion, and with an authentic
00:07:51.940 English flavor reminiscent of the faith of his Anglo-Saxon ancestors.
00:07:57.580 On May 7, 1942, he was placed in an internment camp for his folkish beliefs, due to the political
00:08:07.100 climate of the Second World War.
00:08:08.860 He was interned until December of the same year, while many men would crumble and hide
00:08:15.700 after something like this.
00:08:17.580 The hero of Dorshoth did no such thing.
00:08:21.840 After his release, he immediately returned to sharing his love for the Aesir, publishing
00:08:27.420 numerous works honoring our gods and folk.
00:08:31.520 He was so devoted that he did not marry until the age of 65.
00:08:37.720 Alexander Rudd Mills passed away on April 8, 1964, just 13 years after he married.
00:08:45.260 His loving wife Evelyn passed away 9 years later and was laid to rest next to her husband
00:08:51.080 the Church of England Cemetery. Although Mills left this world over 60 years ago, his legacy
00:08:58.300 is stronger than ever. His portrait, as well as an original print of his book, E.R. Olden,
00:09:05.740 have been immortalized in a shrine inside the way of our very own Thor's Hoth. This
00:09:12.080 shrine sits mere feet away from the mural of Lord Thor that our members worship at on
00:09:17.800 a regular basis in a real hoth dedicated to one of the gods that Mills devoted his life
00:09:24.580 to.
00:09:25.780 He may have been forgotten by many of his folk in his time, but the Alcatru Folk Assembly
00:09:31.440 honors and remembers this hero.
00:09:34.560 Hail Alexander Rudd Mills, Hero of Thorshoth.
00:09:39.440 And the last holy day for the month of July, Sigurblot, we observe on July 19th.
00:09:52.660 Sigurblot literally means victoryblot, and was celebrated by our ancestors in the early summer months.
00:10:01.120 On the one hand, our ancestors were celebrating their victory over the harsh winter.
00:10:06.620 Life had won.
00:10:07.820 On the other hand, our ancestors performed a bloc to ask for victory.
00:10:13.740 With the warm weather and the completion of the planting time, the men often turned their minds to the duty of man.
00:10:21.900 War.
00:10:23.240 Practically speaking, summer was the better time to organize new campaigns and set sail.
00:10:30.040 In our modern times, the vast majority of us are not familiar with war in a personal way.
00:10:35.320 We do, however, all have our struggles.
00:10:39.720 Sigur Blot is a time to refocus.
00:10:42.620 It is a time we can use to reorganize our priorities, 0.98
00:10:45.780 to figure out the steps we need to take in order to reach our ultimate goals,
00:10:50.540 and to break free from those that we struggle with.
00:10:54.840 One great way to celebrate Sigur Blot is to offer a meal or some other item that you spent time making
00:11:02.140 in thanks for the victory of life. 0.91
00:11:04.100 Another option is to sacrifice a bladed weapon to the fire
00:11:08.580 A nice knife, for example
00:11:10.920 The blade dulled in battle so that it cannot be used against you
00:11:15.260 This is symbolic, of course
00:11:17.320 Offered to the fire is a great way to ask our gods for victory during the coming winter
00:11:24.020 A gift for a gift
00:11:28.900 Hail Tyr
00:11:30.260 Hail Victory
00:11:33.500 and with that
00:11:37.180 we know a bit more
00:11:39.520 about what we have going on in July
