00:00:52.340 So, on March 9th is our Day of Remembrance, just like every month.
00:00:59.280 And in this month, we celebrate in honor, Olvir of Egg.
00:01:06.180 And also following that, we observe on March 16th,
00:01:11.580 because that's the weekend, the Saturday, the easiest day for most people to get together.
00:01:16.720 But more officially this year, on the Spring Equinox,
00:01:22.060 March 19th, is Ostara.
00:01:27.060 Alright, so let's get into it and learn a little bit about these special days.
00:01:33.620 We're going to start again on March 9th with the Day of Remembrance for Olvil of Aang.
00:01:41.000 So who's Olvil?
00:01:43.460 Sometime between 1020 and 1021 Common Era, 0.70
00:01:48.240 the Christianization of pagan Europe was well underway.
00:01:53.960 King Orof II was ensconced on the throne of Norway. 0.91
00:01:58.700 Much of the country had been baptized under threat of torture and death.
00:02:03.920 Such things, however, were not enough to deter the faithful,
00:02:09.340 and eventually word reached the ears of King Orof II
00:02:13.760 of gatherings in and around Trondheim of a very pagan nature.
00:02:20.520 Olvir of Egg, a leader and a gothi of his people,
00:02:24.380 was elected by his people to speak to the king on their behalf
00:02:28.760 and to defend their religious activities.
00:02:33.880 An intelligent man, Olvir was called before the king on two separate occasions
00:02:40.800 to defend the stories of pagan festivals and feasts.
00:02:45.480 On both occasions, Olverweg humbly described
00:02:51.680 not pagan gatherings, but communal gatherings
00:02:56.320 in which neighbors drank and feasted as friends.
00:03:01.580 Both times, Olver left behind an unconvinced king,
00:03:05.460 and when spies told him a third time of an Easter festival being arranged for the people,
00:03:14.520 Olaf decided that he had heard enough.
00:03:18.560 Five ships and over 300 men were gathered
00:03:22.660 and set out to ambush Olvir and the men and women who worshipped with him.
00:03:28.500 Arriving under the cover of darkness,
00:03:31.680 Olaf's men ambushed Olvir and his pagan community.
00:03:35.460 Olvir was killed, and many of his people were tortured, mutilated, or killed.
00:03:42.200 Once a great stronghold of the pagan faith, Trondheim had been taken.
00:03:50.000 And what can we learn from the story?
00:03:53.700 Many of these stories are not happy stories.
00:03:57.720 On the surface, they are stories of death and defeat.
00:04:02.360 But we have to look past the surface of all of these stories.
00:04:07.140 Here, with Orvir, we see a man who loved his gods,
00:04:13.620 and despite all of the pressures of his ancient world,
00:04:17.740 did his best to worship them.
00:04:20.400 Not only did he do his best for himself,
00:04:24.900 but he also did the best he could for his people.
00:04:27.980 In the face of adversity, Orvir did his best to provide and protect his people from the
00:04:35.840 angry outside force that was the king.
00:04:41.940 Our world is not the same that Orvir lived in.
00:04:46.160 We have the right to choose our faith, but there will always be obstacles. 0.99
00:04:52.700 In these times when our native faith is still so small and our heritage is being challenged 0.99
00:05:00.620 by the multicultural whirlwind, remember Olvil. 0.96
00:05:06.600 Provide a safe place for your folk to be away from the harm of the societal norm. 0.52
00:05:14.100 Remember that sometimes smart words are acquired instead of rash ones.
00:05:20.740 Be there for your folk, provide for your folk.
00:05:26.740 The gods and the ancestors are watching.
00:05:33.940 We'll follow up the day of remembrances for Olvir with a much more, well, happy holiday.
00:05:46.340 Ostara.
00:05:48.940 Ostara this year is observed on March 16th, but more officially celebrated on the spring
00:05:56.920 equinox of March 19th.

00:06:38.200 finally coming to an end. The sun is warming the frozen soil. Life is once stirring from
00:06:47.940 the depths. Ostara is a celebration in every way. Our ancestors celebrated life and the
00:06:57.480 survival of another long winter. They celebrated the birth of lambs, calves, and horses. They
00:07:06.280 They celebrated the blossoming fertility of the world around them.
00:07:11.960 In today's fast and hectic world, now is a good time to stop and take a deep breath.
00:07:19.760 Let the sun warm your face and take the time to thank the gods and the ancestors for seeing
00:07:27.280 you through another cold winter.
00:07:30.860 Shake off the influence of the winter blues.
00:07:34.520 Now is the time to get your hands dirty.
00:07:38.280 The small plot of the garden that you planned for during the charming of the plow is almost
00:07:44.520 ready for planting.
00:07:47.020 Keep that soil turned and soft.
00:07:50.280 Keep fertilizing it.
00:07:52.600 It is too cold to plant seeds directly into the ground, but this is a good time to begin
