00:00:00.000 Hello and welcome to Storytime with the Ossatru Academy.
00:00:24.000 Today, we'll hear what happens when a young boy opens the oven to peek as he's making
00:00:31.620 gingerbread in Jan Brett's version of a classic folk tale.
00:00:37.800 Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett
00:00:48.760 It was cold outside.
00:00:50.980 It was warm inside.
00:00:53.080 A fine day for gingerbread, Motti thought.
00:00:57.180 Motti's mother put the big blue bowl on the table and lit the stove.
00:01:02.140 Motti took down a worn looking cookbook with old fashioned writing on the cover.
00:01:07.120 He opened it up to the page that said, Gingerbread Boy.
00:01:11.700 There's Matty's mother putting wood on the stove and Matty's taking down an old cookbook
00:01:21.120 off the shelf.
00:01:25.060 They measured and mixed.
00:01:31.200 Matty rolled the dough into the shape of a gingerbread boy and they popped him in the
00:01:36.020 oven.
00:01:37.480 Take a full eight minutes.
00:01:39.920 No more, no less.
00:01:42.520 Do not peek, the recipe read.
00:01:46.220 Matty listened to the clock.
00:01:48.360 Tick, tock, tick.
00:01:52.040 One minute, two minutes, three, four, five.
00:01:58.720 Matty couldn't wait any longer.
00:02:01.460 He opened the oven door to take a peek.
00:02:04.920 Instead of a gingerbread boy, out jumped a gingerbread baby.
00:02:09.960 He pranced around the big blue bowl.
00:02:12.620 I am the gingerbread baby, fresh from the pan.
00:02:16.280 If you want me, catch me if you can.
00:02:22.320 Look how surprised Matty and his mother are when a gingerbread baby hops right out of 1.00
00:02:27.540 the oven and dances around the bowl.
00:02:35.640 Matty's mother reached for the gingerbread baby to put him back into the oven, but he ran all
00:02:41.480 around the kitchen. The door opened and in came Matty's father. What's that delicious smell,
00:02:48.680 he asked as the gingerbread baby tumbled through his legs and outside into the yard.
00:02:54.680 There's Matty and his mother trying to catch that gingerbread baby.
00:03:04.420 She's trying to get him in the frying pan as he slips through Matty's father's legs out into the snow.
00:03:15.920 He ran by the tabby cap. 0.74
00:03:18.520 She twitched her tail and sprang at him. 0.97
00:03:20.740 They rumbled and tumbled, but the gingerbread baby came out on top.
00:03:26.780 He ran toward the garden wall.
00:03:29.420 The dog caught a whiff of tasty ginger and sniffed along behind him,
00:03:33.980 but the gingerbread baby was halfway up when the dog caught up.
00:03:38.260 He barked and barked as the gingerbread baby climbed over the wall.
00:03:46.440 Look at that! The gingerbread baby is riding on top of the cat. 0.99
00:03:50.740 and there he escapes over the fence with everybody running after him.
00:04:01.760 Matty was still inside. He heard his mother and father yelling. He heard a cat meowing and a dog
00:04:08.800 barking and he heard the gingerbread baby shouting, catch me if you can. Matty opened up the worn
00:04:16.460 looking cookbook for the second time. Meanwhile, the gingerbread baby wheeled on down the path
00:04:23.580 and into the barn. The goats looked up as he somersaulted across their backs. The last one
00:04:29.900 tried to catch him, but the gingerbread baby was too fast. Those goats sure are surprised to see
00:04:41.480 a live gingerbread baby running around in the barn and what is Mopdi up to? He's looking for
00:04:51.280 another recipe. Martha and Madeline were standing by the well when the gingerbread baby stopped to
00:05:00.120 take a drink. They looked at each other and winked. Martha started to talk to him while Madeline
00:05:06.920 tiptoed up behind him with the bucket, but they couldn't fool that gingerbread baby. 1.00
00:05:16.200 Here are these girls trying to trick the gingerbread baby, but he's too clever. 0.94
00:05:30.440 He took a braid from Martha and a braid from Madeline and tied them in a knot and ran down
00:05:36.840 the road. Back in the house, Mati stirred, mixed, and rolled the dough. He shaped it,
00:05:44.280 put it in a pan, and into the oven. Tick, tock, tick. Eight long minutes.
00:05:52.680 This time he didn't peek. I will catch him if I can, Mati said to himself.
00:06:02.760 There are those poor girls with their braids tied together.
00:06:07.720 And there's Mothy, hard at work in the kitchen.
00:06:16.160 As he was bouncing along, the gingerbread baby saw a farm wagon just ahead.
00:06:21.920 He jumped in and settled down for the ride next to a mama pig. 0.74
00:06:26.660 The smell of gingerbread was too much for her. 0.99
00:06:30.200 She tossed him high in the air, closed her eyes, and opened her mouth. 1.00
00:06:34.680 But the gingerbread baby twisted in the air and came down hard on her porky snout. 0.95
00:06:42.180 I am the gingerbread baby, too quick for the mother and the father, too fast for the cat, the dog, the goats, too clever for Martha and Madeline, too smart for the mama pig.
00:06:54.760 Who's left? Catch me if you can.
00:06:57.260 there's the gingerbread baby dancing along and there's that farm wagon that poor mama 1.00
00:07:06.240 pig she was expecting a delicious treat and instead she got a hard kick in her nose 0.97
00:07:12.640 feeling smug the gingerbread baby strolled along by himself until he came to a bridge 0.93
00:07:22.840 that crossed over to the village. Just as he got to the middle, he heard running feet behind him
00:07:29.480 and saw a crowd of villagers ahead of him. The gingerbread baby was trapped. He jumped up onto
00:07:37.320 the railing, back flipped through the air, and landed on a chunk of ice floating down the river.
00:07:44.120 That was a close call. That gingerbread baby, he escaped. There he is, jumping down into
00:07:59.300 the river. The ice bobbed along with the gingerbread
00:08:09.500 baby dancing on top and singing in a loud voice. Look at me and what do you see? The best gingerbread
00:08:17.180 baby ever. Until his feet got cold and he jumped ashore. Who was that watching from the trees?
00:08:26.300 It was the fox. He crept up behind the gingerbread baby ready to eat him up. But the fox couldn't
00:08:35.260 help himself and he licked his chops smack smack the gingerbread baby heard him and ran as fast
00:08:43.820 as he could what do you think has the gingerbread baby finally met his match
00:08:50.620 is the fox going to catch up with him
00:08:53.020 just when the fox was catching up the gingerbread baby saw the milk and cheese man with his can of
00:09:07.200 milk the perfect hiding place he thought he lifted the lid and lowered himself inside
00:09:14.580 he was so pleased that he sang at the top of his gingerbread voice
00:09:19.540 Ha ha, hee hee, you'll never find me. I'm the gingerbread baby. Catch me if you can.
00:09:28.720 The milk and cheese man heard the gingerbread baby's voice.
00:09:33.240 Who is meddling with my milk? he shouted and lifted the lid.
00:09:37.660 But the gingerbread baby was ready. He jumped up and tweaked his nose.
00:09:45.860 That rascally gingerbread baby. 1.00
00:09:49.540 He outwitted the fox.
00:09:57.540 And there he is tweaking the poor milkman's nose.
00:10:08.020 Now the milk and cheese man, the fox, the villagers, the mama pig, Martha and Madeline,
00:10:15.600 The bleeding goats, the barking dog, the meowing cat, the father and the mother were all after
00:10:22.780 the gingerbread baby and getting closer.
00:10:26.680 And he knew it.
00:10:28.380 The brash baby was not as peppy and proud as he had been.
00:10:32.800 He sniffed a familiar smell and followed his nose into the woods.
00:10:41.440 gingerbread baby. He's got quite a crowd following after him. But where is the fox? Here's all
00:10:52.860 the villagers and the farm animals. But the sneaky fox, it might be hard for you to see.
00:11:00.820 He's there in the trees following along in the woods.
00:11:04.420 He couldn't believe what he saw
00:11:12.940 There in the middle of a clearing was a gingerbread house
00:11:16.660 Frosted with sugar, covered with candy
00:11:19.820 And doors with peppermint handles wide open
00:11:22.980 The gingerbread baby clapped his hands with glee
00:11:26.480 And ran inside
00:11:28.020 look what a beautiful gingerbread house is there waiting in the snow for the gingerbread baby
00:11:37.540 and there on the side we've got all the villagers and animals following after wanting to eat him up
00:11:47.460 and who is peeking out from behind a tree
00:11:50.680 in a tick tock tick everyone arrived in the clearing but all they found were a few bits
00:12:04.300 of frosting a peppermint candy and some crumbs the father exclaimed the gingerbread baby has
00:12:11.680 finally met his match I wonder who it was the mother said let's go home and tell Matty
00:12:19.100 There's the crowd of villagers and animals looking at the crumbs that are left on the
00:12:31.440 snow.
00:12:32.940 And there's the fox watching from behind a tree.
00:12:39.560 And there's Mati walking through the forest and he's carrying something.
00:12:49.100 Hello, Matty, his father said when they got home.
00:12:54.920 We never did catch that gingerbread baby.
00:12:58.220 All we found were some crumbs in the snow.
00:13:00.720 I see you have been busy, his mother said, looking at the gingerbread house Matty was
00:13:05.980 holding.
00:13:06.980 Too bad we never caught that gingerbread baby.
00:13:10.700 Too bad, said Matty.
00:13:19.100 They're Matty's parents coming home with the cat and the dog, and they find Matty there
00:13:30.200 with the beautiful gingerbread house he's made.
00:13:32.900 And where do you think that gingerbread baby is?
00:13:39.220 Only Matty could hear the tiny voice from inside the gingerbread house.
00:13:49.100 I'm the little gingerbread baby, lucky as can be to be living in the house that Mati
00:13:57.560 made for me.
00:14:05.340 I hope you all enjoyed that story.
00:14:07.680 It sure did make me want to go and whip up a batch of gingerbread.
00:14:12.960 Have a great day.
00:14:13.960 We'll see you next time.
00:14:19.100 We'll be right back.
