00:07:35.180 And to understand what it is, 10, 20 years ago, if you had a special interest, you might go to, like, a bulletin board, and you would discuss with other people in that particular community stuff about, I don't know, boat building or modding, video games or all kinds of different stuff like that.
00:07:50.200 Well, Reddit was launched in 2005, and it has taken all of that over.
00:07:54.380 It was actually founded by free speech absolutists.
00:07:58.680 The CEOs at the time were Steve Huffman, Alexis Ohanian, and this guy, oh, yeah, Aaron Schwartz, who was a free speech absolutist and, unfortunately, had a little run-in with the FBI, is my understanding.
00:08:12.140 He's the one that downloaded the JSTAR database and wound up wrapping his car around a tree, is my understanding.
00:08:17.340 But, anyways, this was a growing part of the internet.
00:08:20.100 It was a place where people could go to talk about anything.
00:08:22.560 And so, in 2015, a group of people went to talk about Donald Trump there, and they founded the subreddit TheDonald, which became the largest pro-Donald Trump community on the internet.
00:08:33.980 It grew to, officially, 800,000 people, making it the third largest political subreddit on the site Reddit.
00:08:40.760 But it was actually much larger because Reddit went out of its way to suppress the number of subscribers.
00:08:47.380 The era of TheDonald saw a lot of interference from the top of Reddit, then owned by Condé Nast, and then spun off to private owners.
00:08:58.640 Somewhere along the line, Tencent got involved in 2019.
00:09:02.440 But TheDonald was one of the reasons, I think, that Donald Trump won the 2016 election.
00:09:07.500 Donald Trump was not a typical political candidate, as you and I both know.
00:09:10.860 So, you were there, Steve, and you know the keyboard warriors.
00:09:13.660 This is where they were.
00:09:15.020 They were taking new memes, new ideas, new ways to normalize Donald Trump's very different political platform,
00:09:22.780 and distribute that information to the front page of Reddit, where many young, impressionable people saw it,
00:09:29.080 and became part of the Trump movement, and then further to places like Twitter.
00:09:32.980 And this was not, like, some, not, like, ignored part of the internet.
00:09:38.140 The people that went there to do Ask Me Anythings, Alex Jones went, Ann Coulter, Curt Schilling,
00:09:44.100 Donald Trump himself went there and answered people's questions, Peter Schweitzer, Milo, Roger Stone, Scott Adams, Tucker.
00:09:51.240 This was a really big deal.
00:09:53.340 And then what happened after the Trump election, I think a lot of technology companies were like,
00:09:58.640 wow, we can't let that happen again.
00:10:00.280 And Reddit started cracking down on the Donald.
00:10:03.460 They started changing the rules to de-boost the post so they couldn't get to the front page.
00:10:10.260 It got to the point where the CEO actually spoofed one of the user's accounts and edited one of his comments,
00:10:16.140 and they ultimately banned it over a very artificial thing,
00:10:19.440 saying that actually the Trump movement was inciting calls to violence against the police.
00:10:23.460 Although the problem was is that there were all these spam bots going in there and stirring up this rhetoric.
00:10:28.860 But that banning came just months before the 2020 election.
00:10:32.680 This was the largest pro-Trump community.
00:10:34.540 I think it is essentially election interference.
00:10:37.220 And it came within a year after Tencent took a very significant minority stake in the company.
00:10:44.120 I haven't heard anybody ask questions about what went on there.
00:10:47.560 Why did Reddit shut down the Donald?
00:10:50.420 Now, the way it operates is you have all these anonymous moderators.
00:10:54.660 That's the way Reddit shields themselves from, you know, gives themselves Section 230 immunity.
00:11:00.340 And these moderators can enforce ideology.
00:11:03.960 And so on the major political subreddits like rpolitics, who now has like seven or eight million subscribers,
00:11:11.480 millions of people go there a week.
00:11:13.300 This is where young people go.
00:11:15.260 They go talk to their friends at public school, and their friends are like,
00:11:18.060 Oh, yeah, I'm into Pokemon, or I'm into Fortnite.
00:11:21.060 Well, now the biggest Fortnite community on the internet is at Reddit.
00:11:24.240 And once you get onto Reddit, the ideology is going to be enforced from the top down.
00:11:28.200 Because these moderators moderate multiple subreddits.
00:11:31.480 And with an iron fist, will not allow you to question the liberal progressive orthodoxy.

00:11:38.040 I've been kicked off of subreddits, totally unrelated, just because of arguing over chromosomes.
00:11:43.660 And so that's the way it rolls.
00:11:45.620 And this isn't like the bulletin boards where you're buried into your one community.
