00:00:03.840 something done, but at the same time, the immigration crackdown isn't going to slow.
00:00:09.540 It's not going to slow. I think the best thing that they can claim is that it's a symbolic
00:00:13.480 victory, but the symbolism is important here. And I think it's worth pulling back a little bit and
00:00:18.360 thinking about how dramatically the politics around the Department of Homeland Security have
00:00:24.040 changed. This is a department that was formed after 9-11 to stop terrorist attacks, to keep the
00:00:31.220 country safe. And it has had periods of controversy throughout its history, but the mission was always
00:00:37.480 pretty straightforward and pretty broadly supported, so much so that for a long time, Democrats were
00:00:42.500 afraid of being seen as on the wrong side of its mission. They didn't want to be seen as soft on
00:00:48.200 terror. They were supportive of DHS. What's changed is that under Trump, he has
00:00:53.380 pretty dramatically reoriented the mission of DHS. He's pulled resources away from terrorism
00:00:59.200 to focus on hitting Stephen Miller's deportation quotas, and in the process has made it much more
00:01:05.820 controversial. Approval ratings have dropped dramatically. And the irony, Stephanie, in all of
00:01:13.520 this is that even Republicans who like what they see in terms of DHS spending more time on immigration
00:01:20.020 feel like it's being badly mismanaged. They are not supportive of Kristi Noem.
00:01:25.680 You know, you talk to them on Capitol Hill, you talk to them in Washington, they will say that it's
00:01:29.960 been a disaster, that she's turned the department into a vehicle for the advancing of her own political
00:01:35.820 celebrity. And they're not happy with it either. So the department has lost support on all sides,
00:01:43.200 and that's what's enabled Democrats to pick this fight and see it as a winner.
00:01:47.860 This is some encouraging news on the cost of living, right? Inflation took a big step in the
00:01:53.360 right direction to start the year off. So consumer prices up by 2.4% year over year. That is an
00:02:00.700 improvement from 2.7% in December that beat expectations, which were for 2.5%. In fact,
00:02:07.740 this is a new eight-month low for annual inflation, month over month. Prices up by 0.2%,
00:02:14.340 also a step in the right direction, also beating expectation. Now, economists look really closely
00:02:20.300 at core inflation, which excludes food and energy. Core inflation came in at 2.5%. That's notable
00:02:28.180 because that's the lowest annual inflation rate for core since March of 2021, before the inflation
00:02:34.980 crisis. Now, while we can't exclude food and energy from our family budgets, that's important
00:02:39.200 because economists say that's a better indicator for where inflation is going. And when you look
00:02:44.020 at the trend for inflation over the last few years, you can see there's been some improvement,
00:02:49.540 right? It's been a little bit bumpy on this chart. It's been bumpy, but it has improved. There was this
00:02:55.640 uptick in inflation starting last spring after the president slapped massive tariffs on imports.
00:03:00.380 Inflation started to go heat back up, up to 3%. But thankfully, it's trending back down. Now,
00:03:05.860 when we look at some of the notable categories, as far as what people are seeing at the store.
00:03:10.900 Donald Trump just said on social media, quote, there will be voter ID for the midterm elections,
00:03:16.980 whether approved by Congress or not. That stark warning comes just days after the House passed the
00:03:23.520 restrictive Save America Act, which if it passes the Senate would make it harder for millions of
00:03:28.840 Americans to vote. Just hours before that post, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said this.
00:03:36.920 We've been proactive to make sure that we have the right people voting,
00:03:40.360 electing the right leaders to lead this country.
00:03:42.880 Zelensky speaking at the Munich Security Conference. So far, it's talked about the
00:03:47.400 urgency in countries helping Ukraine in its nearly four-year-long battle against Russia.
00:03:53.140 President Zelensky also said that every power plant in Ukraine has been damaged.
00:03:58.140 Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio focused on the Trump administration's message of a world
00:04:03.600 order that needs to be reformed and rebuilt. And despite a recently strained relationship,
00:04:09.800 he also spoke about U.S. unity with Europe.

00:11:02.340 Talk to us about this story because it is pretty shocking how far, and I don't know how we can continue on with the FBI as it is, because to me, this is more than a personnel problem.

00:11:14.780 Yeah, it's very important to note that what we're describing here ended in 2025.

00:11:23.140 This is an end run around the Fourth Amendment, an end run around the notion that in America we don't have general warrants, we don't look at people, and then say, we'll try to find a crime on them.

00:11:37.060 But in the Obama era, all the way through the Biden era, under two directors, James Comey first, which gave us Russia collusion, and Chris Wray, which gave us all sorts of really troubling investigations with crazy code names, Arctic Frost and Round River and Crimson River.
00:11:54.880 What was set up was a system to look at people who were in sensitive categories, meaning they're politicians, they're journalists, they're clergy, they're protected by the First Amendment.
00:12:06.100 There is a very high threshold to open up a criminal investigation against someone in those professions.
00:12:10.960 The Justice Department has had a high and strong and long threshold that you have to go to a senior supervisor to open up.
00:12:19.200 But what they began to do is do an end run around that.

00:12:23.160 Assessments required no proof of wrongdoing.

00:12:31.660 And you can start to look and go around the approval process and look for dirt until you found something that you then could go to your supervisor and say, I believe we should open a criminal investigation against Steve Bannon or John Solomon or whoever it's going to be, Rudy Giuliani.

00:12:53.100 It's a complete defiance of what our founding fathers intended our criminal justice system to be.

00:20:43.280 So elections are now within the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security in terms of protecting elections as critical infrastructure from foreign interference.
00:20:54.680 And I think that's exactly what Kristi Noem was saying yesterday in Phoenix, and people can get all tweeted out about that.
00:21:01.260 But we know for a fact that our voter registration databases in several states were actually penetrated by foreign nationals, Iranians that we know of in at least two states, Arizona being one of those.
00:21:14.500 And so there is a lot that is going to be coming forward, and I think Kristi Noem was letting people know that the Department of Homeland Security does consider elections to be part of our critical infrastructure, and that she is not going to sit by and allow any kind of infringement, penetration, incursion, manipulation, hacking, whatever you want to call it.
00:21:39.280 That is within the Department of Homeland Security to ensure and protect that that does not happen in our elections this year, forever.

00:33:42.580 And we need that, I guess, federal action because although the Attorney General can start this lawsuit against CARE, he can't remove their tax-exempt status.

00:33:53.220 So that is at the top level.
00:33:55.200 But then, of course, just the last point is the primary, and I think early voting opens in, I think, on the 17th, is that Tuesday?
00:34:08.380 And that proposition, which is on the ballot, is key to look at banning Sharia in Texas.
00:34:17.600 And every Texan will have the right to put an X beside that.
00:34:21.500 I think it's an X or a tick or a number, whatever you do there.
00:34:24.200 But they will be able to decide, as Texans, whether they want Sharia law to operate in Texas or not.
