00:04:52.140 But there are three distinct sources, and they're very different, and they call for

00:05:01.960 The other one is a demand-side, what's called demand-pull inflation, where you pull demand

00:05:07.480 forward, and velocity of money goes up, and people just get, hey, I got to buy something

00:05:14.560 And there's fiscal policy, not monetary policy, fiscal policy, which is if you're

00:05:18.960 If you run large deficits in a world where the economies act close to capacity, you're

00:05:25.040 You have to figure out where the inflation is coming from.

00:05:27.940 Well, right now, Peter's right.

00:05:29.160 It is from the supply side.

00:05:30.300 Now, Peter gave two examples, good ones, 1990 and 2008 under Greenspan and Bernanke.

00:05:41.960 I didn't have any useful skills, so I went to grad school.

00:05:49.880 A year later, December 1974, we got together for the holidays.

00:05:55.080 They were all unemployed.

00:05:57.200 We had the worst recession since the Great Depression in 74 and 75.

00:06:04.400 The unemployment was like 12%.

00:06:06.260 And oil prices doubled.

00:06:09.460 That came from the oil price increase, exactly the kind of thing that Peter is talking about.

00:06:15.260 But what did the president do?

00:06:16.600 Gerald Ford and Alan Greenspan. Greenspan was a council of economic advisors. He was not the Fed

00:06:22.160 chair at the time. Gerald Ford and Alan Greenspan in October 1974 launched Wynn. They had these

00:06:29.240 buttons, Wynn. It said, whip inflation now. They were running around concerned about inflation

00:06:33.920 when, in fact, we were headed for the worst recession since the Great Depression. In other

00:06:39.060 words, they were looking at inflation superficially because the oil price increased. Peter's point,

00:06:44.340 He's right. That kind of inflation extinguishes itself. When oil prices go up, gas at the pump

00:06:51.080 goes up, diesel fuel is through the roof. The demand is inelastic. You have to buy it whether

00:06:56.380 you like it or not. It doesn't matter if you don't like the price. You have to buy it, which means

00:07:00.500 you don't do something else. You don't go out to dinner. You don't go on vacation. You don't buy

00:07:04.520 new clothes, whatever it might be. That brings the economy into a recession. The last thing you want

00:07:09.460 to do is raise interest rates. So Peter's right. I would put the 74 examples side by side with his

00:07:15.660 two examples. And one other thing, Steve, intelligence gathering, we protect sources

00:07:21.280 and methods. So I don't want to mention any names. But I'll just say sourcing is close to

00:07:26.900 worse as you can get. And when you peel back the onion a little bit, he may be a nice person. He

00:07:33.380 is a bushy he is a george bush he was lined up with jeb bush uh and back in 2008 so he's um

00:07:41.340 he's bushy through and through so he is and he's now chairman of the fed do you do you do you by

00:34:46.660 New York sends me that Reuters is reporting Goldman's predicting another 25 basis point

00:34:51.540 raise in October and maybe even another one in December. Your thoughts, Philip Patrick?

00:34:58.940 Yeah, that was the biggest story, I think, than the 25 basis point increase yesterday. The signal

00:35:04.520 now, 16 of the 18 officials are predicting rates higher for longer. And that, as we've been talking

00:35:11.340 about, puts the administration in a much tighter box, right? We've talked about debt. The 10-year

00:35:17.260 Treasury has been flirting with 5% for a while. That is the highest level since 2007. Every time

00:35:23.860 the Treasury has to refinance maturing debt or issue new debt at these levels, it causes a big

00:35:30.400 problem. The government's interest rate bill goes up significantly. So we've got Besson who's trying

00:35:36.020 to manage a $40 trillion debt load while the Fed is effectively raising the price of financing it.

00:35:41.620 That doesn't blow the budget up tomorrow, but it steadily consumes fiscal room that could

00:35:47.000 otherwise go towards tax relief, defense, infrastructure. Essentially, we could use it

00:35:52.040 productively. Secondly, let's look at housing, right? A big driver for the administration is

00:35:58.300 to bring down the cost of living. They want to improve affordability. Mortgage rates were already

00:36:03.900 at a one-year high last week, and home builder sentiment just fell to a one-year low. Today,

00:36:11.320 a 30-year fixed rate mortgage is averaging 7.24%. Now, the Fed doesn't directly set mortgage rates.

00:36:19.000 The long end of the yield, as we've discussed many times, matters much more. But the Fed telling

00:36:24.340 markets that tighter policy is here to stay makes it much harder for these long-term borrowing costs

00:36:31.060 to come down. And housing, I think, is one of the clearest places ordinary Americans start to feel

00:36:36.380 monetary policy. Then, of course, we've got the administration's growth agenda, right?

00:36:42.760 The basic economic bet is stronger investment, more domestic production, and faster real growth.

00:36:50.400 But higher rates make that a tougher hurdle for absolutely everything. Factories, real estate,

00:36:57.600 small business borrowing, corporate investment, consumer credit. You can pursue supply-side

00:37:04.340 growth while the Fed tightens demand, but you're effectively pressing the accelerator and the

00:37:09.080 brake at the same time. It's making the administration's job much more difficult.

00:37:14.920 And finally, I think there is a genuine dilemma here. Look, Walsh wasn't raising rates for no

00:37:21.780 reason. Inflation is above target. The labor market remains relatively strong. And he's clearly

00:37:26.760 trying to restore some credibility on price stability. There is an argument that showing

00:37:32.720 discipline now could ultimately bring the long end of the yield down by convincing bond investors

00:37:38.220 that inflation, you know, we're taking it seriously and it's going to be controlled.

00:37:42.040 I wouldn't say a quarter point hike is going to destroy the administration's agenda.

00:37:46.040 What I would say, though, is the Fed has genuinely entered another tightening cycle

00:37:50.980 and the administration now has to achieve faster growth, improve affordability and finance an

00:37:58.060 enormous federal debt with monetary policy pushing in the opposite direction. And it's just given

00:38:04.020 them a much more difficult hand to play. So I think it was a tough move. I think both are kind

00:38:09.880 of boxed in, but it's just putting more pressure on Scott Besson. If you have, hang on, if you have,

00:38:16.080 just explain to people, if you have President Trump, you know, and you sit here at Larry

00:38:21.140 Cuttle all the time, he's about growth. President Trump's about growth. If you see that the original

00:38:25.500 bet was a supply-side tax cut, and particularly for unmanufacturing, with the depreciation

00:38:36.680 and period zero, all of that, to drive the rebuilding of American manufacturing and

00:38:43.020 tariffs as a forcing function of that, everything focused on growth.

00:38:47.000 when the fed steps in and enters a uh a a credit tightening cycle as the rates yes the rate

00:38:55.960 increased yesterday what's forecasted or talked about by goldman sachs and others in october and

00:39:01.680 even people talk about december you see a whole cycle tightening how is president trump how are

00:39:07.540 we supposed how are best in a trump supposed to get growth and supposed to get a growing economy

00:39:13.520 if you're going to be choking down credit, sir?

00:39:17.600 It's just going to make the job significantly more difficult, right?

00:39:21.760 You know, the idea behind the administration is you expand the economy fast enough to make

00:39:28.360 that enormous debt burden more manageable, but higher interest rates deliberately work

00:39:33.220 in the opposite direction, at least in the near term, right?

00:39:35.980 It makes borrowing more expensive.

00:39:37.680 It restrains demand.

00:39:39.040 It slows interest-sensitive economic activity.

00:39:42.680 and ultimately reduces inflationary pressures. So as I mentioned before, you have two different

00:39:48.360 economic levers pulling in opposite directions. The Treasury and the administration are trying

00:39:54.060 to increase the economy's capacity to grow. The Fed is trying to restrain demand enough

00:39:59.360 to bring inflation down. It's not necessarily irrational, right? The Fed would argue that

00:40:04.900 long-term lasting growth requires price stability. High inflation ultimately damages investment. But

00:40:11.960 it absolutely makes the administration's job significantly more difficult right think about

00:40:17.900 a manufacturer deciding on whether to build another factory deregulation may make that

00:40:23.260 investment more attractive sorry tax policy and strong economic growth will as well but the cost

00:40:30.800 of financing that factory keeps climbing then the math will stop working at some point so these two

00:40:36.880 things are working in opposite directions and it's just making the administration's job which was

00:40:41.500 already very difficult, by the way, even more difficult. I mean, isn't that President Trump's

00:40:47.160 frustration that he's trying to grow his way? I mean, the theory from the beginning, go back to

00:40:52.340 all of our broadcasts. Well, first off, the years that Scott Besant was here as a contributor,

00:40:58.940 but also, you know, Philip Patrick and Peter Navarro, the entire plan was a supply side tax

00:41:07.600 got driven last chance, as Besson said, to drive growth. Can't you understand the frustration of

00:41:15.320 President Trump when he sees this and they're tightening the credit cycle and he's sitting

00:41:19.940 there going, hey, we're trying to grow our way out of it. How are we going to take this headwind,

00:41:24.520 sir? Yeah, of course I can. Listen, this is a growth guy. This has always been his plan for

00:41:30.340 the beginning. And we have an economic environment that's making that very difficult to achieve.

00:41:35.660 by the way, despite that, we're seeing huge amounts of success, right? What put the Fed in

00:41:40.820 a tough position was GDP growing, unemployment at historically low levels. So a lot of what the

00:41:47.780 administration are doing is absolutely working. But like I said, they're running uphill at this

00:41:54.660 point, and they have a Fed who's actively working against them. I'd like to put all of the blame on

00:41:59.960 Kevin Walsh. The reality is the markets were doing a ton of the tightening on his behalf regardless.

00:42:07.440 So I think some of this blame does lie with Congress as well. I think if we had shown

00:42:12.100 or taken actionable steps to start reducing the deficit, that would have bought the Federal

00:42:18.940 Reserve a little bit more time. I think the markets would have given us a little bit more

00:42:22.820 leeway. At the end of the day, I think the world wants America to get on top of these problems.

00:42:27.820 They want us to succeed. And I think if we start showing them we're making the right decisions when it comes to spending, they're going to give the administration the time that they need to execute the plan effectively.

00:42:39.760 But we need a Federal Reserve that's playing ball as well.

00:47:07.060 We've talked many times about China, Russia, Iran, that part of the world are looking for

00:47:12.360 a stable form of currency, if you will, that cannot be seized by a foreign central bank.

00:47:18.020 So I think a lot of those motivations still exist around the globe.

00:47:22.080 And we're not seeing central bank gold buying let up at all, as we've seen treasury yields

00:47:27.800 on the 10 and 30 hit all-time highs, well, all-time highs, sorry, century highs or 2023

00:47:33.320 highs when it comes to the 10 over the last few weeks.

00:47:37.780 At the same time, we've seen central bank gold buying escalating.
