Summary

In this episode, I talk about how I began to have a glow up and how I improved myself both internally and externally. It was definitely a process for me to get to where I am today, both internally (how I behave) and externally, both how I behave and how my personality has improved.

00:00:00.000 Hello beautiful ladies and welcome to today's video where we're going to be talking about my glow up.
00:00:08.740 So as I've said on my channel before, I haven't always been classic.
00:00:12.540 There have definitely been times in my life where I've been more or less classic
00:00:16.220 and it was definitely a process for me to get to where I am today,
00:00:20.460 both internally and externally, both how I behave and how I feel that my personality has improved
00:00:26.840 and how I've changed the way that I look.
00:00:29.500 And I was actually inspired to do this video because Mrs. Midwest did a video just like this about her glow up story.
00:00:35.780 I'm going to link that in the description box.
00:00:37.700 I really enjoyed hearing her story and how she made herself feel even more beautiful, even more glowy, all of that.
00:00:44.560 And so I was inspired to share my story and about how I had a glow up
00:00:48.680 and what I did to go from where I was to where I'm at now.
00:00:51.940 So I'm really excited to share with you guys kind of how I improved myself both inside and out.
00:00:57.080 So my story sort of begins in high school because when I was in high school,
00:01:01.220 I was at an all-girls high school.
00:01:03.600 So I really didn't care that much about the way that I looked.
00:01:07.080 I would wear big sweatshirts.
00:01:08.860 I would wear pajama pants under my skirts.
00:01:11.400 We had a uniform, but I would just put pajama pants underneath.
00:01:14.360 And I really just didn't care about keeping myself looking really nice.
00:01:18.620 I wasn't hanging around guys.
00:01:20.360 I wasn't trying to impress anyone.
00:01:21.520 I was going to school to learn, and I just didn't care about the way that I looked.
00:01:24.620 So I never wore makeup.
00:01:26.100 And if I did, I was only wearing eyeliner, and I was only wearing it on the bottom lash line.
00:01:31.040 It was a look.
00:01:32.100 I never did my hair.
00:01:33.400 I never heat styled it.
00:01:34.680 I never got it dyed.
00:01:35.720 Anything like that.
00:01:36.840 My skin was something I was really struggling with right near the end of my high school career.
00:01:42.280 It was just not doing well at all.
00:01:44.600 And I didn't even really think about fashion just because I was wearing a uniform to school.
00:01:48.420 So I had some nice dresses for the weekends and for Sabbath, but I really didn't have, like, a style.
00:01:53.620 And so it wasn't until I went to college where I didn't have to wear a uniform that I started to think about fashion a little bit more.
00:02:00.380 But even then, I wouldn't say I had a glow-up because I was still kind of just following trends.
00:02:06.200 I was still wearing clothing that was following certain modesty rules.
00:02:09.260 And I would just buy things because they happened to be long enough, not because I actually liked them or thought I would wear them a lot,
00:02:15.300 but because, oh, this is long enough or, oh, this covers the right body parts.
00:02:18.480 And I wasn't putting any thought into what I was actually choosing to wear.
00:02:22.600 And I still really hadn't learned to do makeup.
00:02:24.400 I kind of was trying it a little bit, but I hadn't really figured it out.
00:02:27.600 And I just really hadn't developed my personal style and what exactly I wanted to look like
00:02:33.000 and that there were certain interests I had that would reflect on my elegance and how I wanted to behave.
00:02:38.180 So things really started changing for me when I went to my master's program
00:02:42.660 because that was when I learned how to do makeup.
00:02:45.600 I know that a lot of you are probably similar to me.
00:02:47.880 I learned how to do everything I know about makeup from YouTube.
00:02:51.400 I actually started watching videos, and I started realizing how it can really make a difference when you do your makeup.
00:02:57.180 And I loved the whole process.
00:02:58.660 It made me very relaxed.
00:03:00.380 It was something I really enjoyed.
00:03:01.620 It was an artistic, creative outlet for me.
00:03:04.580 And I really learned how to make my best features stand out.
00:03:09.320 Now, it was definitely a process because at the beginning,
00:03:12.700 I was just kind of following YouTube gurus without really knowing my skin type,
00:03:17.040 without really knowing what features I wanted to emphasize.
00:03:19.900 And so I was kind of doing it all wrong for a little while.
00:03:23.060 I remember a specific occasion where I was wearing a dewy, luminous foundation.
00:03:28.200 And at the time, I had very oily skin, and I wore it to a baseball game.
00:03:32.020 And I went up to scratch my face, and the foundation just came off on my hand.
00:03:37.280 And I was like, I think I did this wrong.
00:03:39.380 So it definitely was a process for me.
00:03:41.920 But that was kind of the first step in my classic glow-up.
00:03:45.640 But the rest of it is a little bit different.
00:03:47.760 And I want to get into how I began my classic glow-up,
00:03:51.060 and how you can do the same if it's something that you want to incorporate into your life.
00:03:55.380 So let's get into it.
00:03:56.740 The first thing that I needed to do to start my glow-up was take care of my skin.
00:04:01.580 Now, I had very acne-prone, comedogenic skin when I was in high school and when I was in my master's program.
00:04:07.860 And I kind of just resigned myself to it.
00:04:09.940 I said, I'm just going to live with this.
00:04:11.640 I'm going to learn how to do my makeup so I can cover it.
00:04:14.120 And I just kind of gave up on the whole process.
00:04:16.800 And it wasn't until I went to my dermatologist for something else entirely
00:04:20.080 that he said, have you talked to someone about your acne in a while?
00:04:24.420 And I was embarrassed, and I said, you know, I recognize that this may not be something I can fix.
00:04:31.220 And he said, that's not acceptable.
00:04:33.580 We're going to work on this together.
00:04:35.100 He's an amazing doctor.
00:04:36.320 And so when we talked about it and we worked through it,
00:04:39.500 I was able to really come up with a regimen that worked for me,
00:04:42.900 that made my skin a lot better.
00:04:45.420 Does that mean I never get acne?
00:04:46.660 No.
00:04:47.020 I share that I have acne pretty frequently on my Instagram stories because acne is totally normal.
00:04:53.180 But working with a doctor made a huge difference for me
00:04:55.700 and really made it so that I felt more confident in my skin,
00:05:00.160 in my looks, in my femininity, and it just made me feel a lot better.
00:05:04.880 Now, can you be beautiful with acne?
00:05:06.740 Of course.
00:05:07.380 I have acne right now.
00:05:08.260 I have acne on my chin that, like, is just going to live there until we're done with masks.
00:05:11.820 But for me, that was sort of the first step in my glow-up story
00:05:16.300 because I was really trying to find ways to make myself feel better and feel more confident.
00:05:22.800 And that was a really good first step in the whole process.
00:05:25.980 So my skincare started off just with working with my doctor,
00:05:29.600 finding the right topical creams so that I could really heal my skin.
00:05:33.580 But nowadays, I have a whole skincare regimen
00:05:36.520 just because I really want to take good care of my skin now
00:05:39.880 so that 20 years from now, 30 years from now,
00:05:43.060 I'm not having to deal with the results of me not having taken care of my skin earlier
00:05:46.820 because it's very hard to undo damage to your skin.
00:05:50.420 So I use a lot of oils, a lot of creams.
00:05:53.140 I wear sunscreen every day.
00:05:54.700 I'm very careful about my skin so that it does look nicer as I age.
00:05:59.180 And so I feel like really taking the time to develop my skincare regimen
00:06:02.120 was the first step for me in becoming more classic and having that classic glow-up.
00:06:06.820 So of course, taking care of my skin and seeing results in my skincare routine
00:06:10.960 is an outward beauty sort of thing.
00:06:13.220 But it also kind of teaches you responsibility
00:06:15.440 and is inwardly also teaching you something about,
00:06:19.480 I need to take care of myself.
00:06:20.740 Even if this isn't something that's going to be attractive
00:06:23.560 just because I put skincare stuff on my face like makeup, right,
00:06:27.340 where you see an immediate result,
00:06:29.260 it's something that I need to do for the future.
00:06:31.980 It's a responsible action.
00:06:33.680 And that was something I think that does also make me feel more classic
00:06:38.020 is I'm not just thinking about today, I'm thinking about the future.
00:06:41.720 So after taking care of my skin,
00:06:43.760 I really learned more about how to do my makeup.
00:06:46.660 So I mentioned a little bit about how I learned how to do makeup,
00:06:49.380 but I didn't really know my skin type until everything had cleared up.
00:06:53.520 And once I treated my acne,
00:06:55.560 then I found that I had more of combo skin.
00:06:58.080 There were parts of my face that are normal
00:06:59.420 and parts of my skin that's dry
00:07:00.980 and parts of my face that are oily.
00:07:02.440 And so I could find the right foundations and primers
00:07:04.960 that really did work for me.
00:07:06.220 And that changed my whole makeup routine
00:07:08.320 because focusing on the skin with makeup,
00:07:10.180 I think is the first really base part of everything.
00:07:13.520 Because if your skin looks nice and fresh and healthy,
00:07:16.400 then all the rest of it is just fun.
00:07:18.320 It's just gravy.
00:07:19.280 So I get to do really fun makeup looks now,
00:07:21.900 eye makeup and lip colors and all that.
00:07:24.020 But if you know what products work best on your skin,
00:07:26.340 then you can feel even more beautiful and feel more confident.
00:07:29.760 And I really taught myself, as well as my skin,
00:07:32.880 how to accentuate my best features.
00:07:35.780 So I started learning how to do a cat eye.
00:07:37.960 And that was something I really loved doing
00:07:39.580 and figuring out the best mascaras for me
00:07:41.740 because I like accentuating my eyes and my brows.
00:07:44.420 And then I learned how to contour.
00:07:45.800 Contour was very important for me
00:07:47.420 because I wanted to bring out my cheekbones
00:07:49.520 and my jaw and all of that.
00:07:51.380 And learning how to do makeup,
00:07:52.380 again, I would say it almost has two parts to it.
00:07:54.720 It has that inside feeling.
00:07:57.220 And then also, of course,
00:07:58.160 you're learning how to make yourself more beautiful.
00:08:00.700 But internally, it also made me feel
00:08:02.760 like I had a creative space.
00:08:04.940 It's something I can do when I just want to relax,
00:08:07.340 calm down, just feel more at peace.
00:08:10.340 And it's also a way for me to take control
00:08:13.280 of how people perceive me.
00:08:15.440 And so that is a classic quality,
00:08:18.240 is the idea of I want to take care of my looks
00:08:21.860 so that when I make a first impression,
00:08:23.960 I have some aspect of control
00:08:26.100 over what someone thinks when they meet me.
00:08:28.680 And that was something that made me feel
00:08:30.960 more classic over time.
00:08:32.460 The third part of my classic glow-up
00:08:34.620 was beginning to exercise.
00:08:36.960 Because the fact of the matter is,
00:08:38.300 I really didn't exercise very much throughout my life.
00:08:41.160 I would kind of have two or three months
00:08:43.320 where I was very, very rigorous about going to yoga classes
00:08:46.560 or doing videos on YouTube that were exercise classes.
00:08:49.840 And then I would just let it lapse.
00:08:51.380 And when Jacob and I met,
00:08:53.300 it actually wasn't until Jacob and I met
00:08:54.960 that I got very serious about my exercise routine
00:08:57.740 because he's very serious about his exercise routine.
00:09:01.040 And that really taught me
00:09:02.700 that I should be taking care of my body,
00:09:05.940 that I should be trying to do what's best
00:09:08.360 for my body in the long run.
00:09:09.840 And so I started doing weightlifting, which I love.
00:09:12.060 It's very important for women
00:09:13.260 because you can get osteoporosis as you get older.
00:09:15.920 And doing weightlifting or body weight
00:09:17.980 is a very important way to strengthen your bones.
00:09:20.980 And it's something that I also just love doing.
00:09:23.900 And I started seeing a real change in my physical body
00:09:27.540 because I wasn't heavy or anything in high school or college,
00:09:32.140 but I just didn't have any muscle tone.
00:09:34.640 And I would have nightmares about getting in fights with people
00:09:37.700 and not being able to fight back
00:09:39.480 because I just didn't feel strong.
00:09:41.720 And when I finally started to really exercise
00:09:43.820 and take control of that part of my life,
00:09:46.880 I felt so much better in the way that I looked,
00:09:49.740 in the ways that my clothes fit,
00:09:51.440 in the way that I felt when I walked around,
00:09:53.940 that I just felt like I had more strength in my body.
00:09:56.880 And that made me so happy,
00:09:59.000 made me feel so much more classic.
00:10:00.520 So that was definitely a step in becoming more classic.
00:10:03.980 And then the other part of that was fixing my diet.
00:10:06.480 I was not careful about what I ate,
00:10:09.400 really for a very long time.
00:10:11.080 If I was lazy and I didn't pack a lunch,
00:10:12.680 I would eat a chocolate bar for lunch.
00:10:14.200 It was not good for me.
00:10:15.620 And again, I didn't really gain weight,
00:10:17.840 but I just wasn't getting the nutrients I needed.
00:10:20.160 I was feeling tired.
00:10:21.380 I wasn't doing the best thing for me.
00:10:24.040 And when I started exercising,
00:10:25.940 it was the same time I started looking at my diet
00:10:28.260 and thinking, okay,
00:10:29.080 how can I get the most out of what I'm eating?
00:10:30.880 How can I get the most nutrients
00:10:32.400 that will really nourish me?
00:10:34.580 All of those things that start making up a healthy diet,
00:10:37.340 I started to take into account.
00:10:38.960 Now, does quarantine affect how I eat?
00:10:41.880 Yes.
00:10:43.400 But I would say that I'm starting to get back on the horse
00:10:46.120 as far as eating healthily.
00:10:47.620 And that was part of my classic glow up
00:10:50.300 was being careful about what I put into my body
00:10:53.500 as well as being careful about how I build strength in my body.
00:10:58.700 Next up, I wanna talk about my hair.
00:11:00.760 So I never did anything with my hair at all.
00:11:02.960 And it was very, very healthy.
00:11:04.660 Because as they call it, it was virgin hair.
00:11:06.500 I'd never colored it.
00:11:07.640 I really rarely heat styled it.
00:11:10.140 I would kind of cut it off and then grow it out
00:11:12.260 and cut it off and grow it out.
00:11:13.260 And I was just not really doing anything with it.
00:11:14.900 And when I was in my master's program,
00:11:17.060 I started dying my hair for the first time.
00:11:18.500 I went through a lot of different colors.
00:11:19.880 I went pretty light.
00:11:21.220 And then I went very red.
00:11:22.600 And now I'm, of course, back to my natural color.
00:11:25.700 But now I love where I'm at with my hair.
00:11:29.060 I have never been happier with my hair.
00:11:31.760 I've gotten highlights around my face
00:11:33.240 and a few dispersed in the back of my hair.
00:11:35.660 And it just brings a little bit of light to my face
00:11:39.060 and really brings the attention to this part of me.
00:11:42.040 Because when my hair is natural, it's very, very dark.
00:11:44.860 And it can be very stark, that color contrast.
00:11:48.360 But bringing in the highlights around my face
00:11:50.560 just brings a little bit of lightness and brightness.
00:11:53.280 And I love that for summertime.
00:11:54.820 I also just love it generally.
00:11:56.300 I feel so nice with that.
00:11:58.160 When I started figuring out what haircuts really worked for me
00:12:02.800 and how much I love taking care of my hair,
00:12:05.720 just really having hair, I love the length,
00:12:08.640 that was when I felt the most classic.
00:12:10.340 And that was really part of my glow up.
00:12:11.780 I used to have long hair,
00:12:12.800 but I really wouldn't take care of it, style it.
00:12:14.860 Get interesting haircuts.
00:12:16.160 I would mostly just kind of keep the length.
00:12:17.620 But now I really do try and get more regular haircuts.
00:12:22.060 I'm not gonna do it every six weeks
00:12:23.640 because that's a lot for me.
00:12:24.680 But I do try and get more regular haircuts.
00:12:27.000 I have side bangs,
00:12:28.020 which I think is a really flattering cut for me.
00:12:30.280 And just figuring out what haircut would look best on you.
00:12:33.060 And if you're interested in coloring your hair,
00:12:35.360 maybe not doing an entirely different color,
00:12:37.940 but maybe just doing some soft highlights
00:12:39.800 or lowlights around your face
00:12:41.440 to kind of add some dimension.
00:12:43.100 Because I can tell you that when I got those highlights
00:12:45.700 around the front of my face the first time on my channel,
00:12:49.020 I got so many comments and compliments from you guys
00:12:51.520 about how different it looked and how nice it looked.
00:12:53.800 So that just confirmed to me how important it is
00:12:56.360 to find a haircut that really does work for you,
00:12:59.080 a hair color that really does work for you.
00:13:01.280 And I love taking care of my hair as well.
00:13:04.400 I have a whole system of different products
00:13:07.360 that I use for different kind of activities and things
00:13:10.220 and what I want for my hair that day.
00:13:12.540 And so just figuring out your hair,
00:13:15.000 figuring out your hair story
00:13:16.440 and figuring out what you want from it
00:13:18.040 is really classic and will make you go
00:13:20.840 from just somebody who has hair
00:13:22.940 to somebody who really loves your hair.
00:13:26.820 Next up, I want to talk about fashion
00:13:29.480 because I really didn't have a fashion.
00:13:32.600 I was just kind of wearing clothes.
00:13:34.620 And I definitely had a little bit of a journey
00:13:36.680 with this as well where I started off
00:13:39.360 just buying clothing because it was long enough
00:13:41.600 and modest enough but not really being picky
00:13:44.140 about what I liked.
00:13:45.500 And then I kind of went off that track
00:13:47.420 and was like, oh, I can wear anything I want.
00:13:49.440 I'm just going to buy anything I want.
00:13:51.580 And it was just a crazy array of clothing
00:13:54.340 that was immodest, that didn't really fit me very well,
00:13:58.980 that wasn't really my sense of style.
00:14:01.260 I would wear it once and then kind of be like,
00:14:02.780 oh, what do I do with this now?
00:14:04.460 And oddly enough, it wasn't until I got married
00:14:07.380 that I started to really take control of my wardrobe.
00:14:11.840 It was like there was this click in my brain
00:14:13.940 that I really wanted to have a sense of style.
00:14:18.100 And it wasn't just I wanted to follow the trends
00:14:20.500 or I wanted to wear what everyone else was wearing.
00:14:23.000 It was I wanted to reflect what I really like.
00:14:26.600 And so for me, that's very feminine clothing
00:14:30.140 and very nautical inspired clothing.
00:14:33.100 I love blue and white and navy and white stripes.
00:14:36.540 All of that makes me so happy.
00:14:38.480 Big flower prints.
00:14:39.580 I love, love dresses.
00:14:41.340 And embracing my sense of style a little bit more
00:14:44.280 and really trying to define it
00:14:46.040 and only really buying pieces I fell in love with.
00:14:49.580 Not just buying pieces because, oh, it's in my price range
00:14:52.180 and it's kind of close to what I wanted,
00:14:53.900 but buying pieces that I really care about.
00:14:56.360 And it's actually really interesting
00:14:57.960 because I'm very picky about skirts
00:14:59.520 and I only have like, I don't know, six or seven in my closet
00:15:02.920 because I haven't come across a lot of skirts lately
00:15:05.380 that I really love.
00:15:06.700 So I have a ton of dresses because I love dresses,
00:15:09.500 but the skirts that I've seen lately
00:15:11.480 just I haven't fallen in love with
00:15:13.120 and so I haven't bought very many.
00:15:14.900 And so narrowing down my wardrobe to what I really like
00:15:17.620 and I think at some point I'm gonna do another purge
00:15:19.920 and get rid of some older pieces of mine
00:15:22.080 that are not really my sense of style right now,
00:15:24.500 it just makes you feel like you have a handle
00:15:28.960 and a grasp on what is really you.
00:15:32.580 And that's very classic, figuring out what works for you,
00:15:35.500 what works for your body type,
00:15:36.760 what makes you happy when you wear it
00:15:38.080 and when you look at it.
00:15:39.120 All of those things will just define your sense of style more
00:15:42.840 and will make you feel even more classic.
00:15:45.260 And that was a really huge part of my journey
00:15:48.420 because now I look in my closet
00:15:49.980 and I just love everything that I'm seeing
00:15:51.840 and that makes me so much more happy
00:15:54.300 and excited to get dressed in the morning.
00:15:56.180 Now as far as my glow up kind of internally
00:15:58.840 and becoming more classic that way,
00:16:01.520 I think a lot of it really did come with getting married
00:16:04.680 because you have all of a sudden a home to take care of
00:16:07.880 and you have another person
00:16:10.620 who's there to support you all the time.
00:16:12.680 And for me, what made me feel classic
00:16:15.620 and have this glow up and more confidence
00:16:18.060 was finding a sense of calm.
00:16:22.220 And for me, that came from having found the person
00:16:24.120 I wanted to marry, having my own home,
00:16:27.480 having my creative control over what the house
00:16:30.360 was gonna look like, having a real closet
00:16:32.500 that was just my own
00:16:33.880 and that Jacob and I were going to events together
00:16:36.920 and we had friends that were in our friend group
00:16:39.800 that we really enjoyed.
00:16:41.100 And all of that made me more confident in being classic
00:16:44.340 because everything that I wanted,
00:16:46.600 everything that I loved about being classic,
00:16:50.340 I had somebody who loved that about me
00:16:53.100 and I wasn't trying to fit in anymore
00:16:55.200 because I didn't have to.
00:16:56.620 Now do you have to get married to be confident
00:16:58.460 and to have a classic glow up?
00:17:01.100 No.
00:17:02.520 Absolutely not.
00:17:03.560 You can definitely do that as a single person.
00:17:05.600 It really comes down to you figuring out
00:17:07.680 what makes you feel confident
00:17:09.560 and not feeling like you have to follow
00:17:11.800 what everyone else around you is doing.
00:17:13.280 And I definitely did start to feel that
00:17:15.480 before I even met Jacob.
00:17:16.720 I think that's probably part of the reason
00:17:18.120 why we worked so well together
00:17:20.020 was because I had started that journey for myself
00:17:22.980 and if I wasn't confident,
00:17:24.360 then it's really hard to meet the right person.
00:17:26.380 But it is something that you can start
00:17:27.720 to incorporate into your life
00:17:28.820 before you meet the guy you're gonna marry.
00:17:30.660 Because if you're really assured of who you are
00:17:34.060 and how you wanna look and how you wanna dress
00:17:36.980 and how you wanna feel,
00:17:38.220 then all of a sudden you will be more confident
00:17:42.540 and you will be ready to take on the world.
00:17:45.080 And that is the most classic thing ever.
00:17:47.120 So that is my glow up story.
00:17:49.420 How I went from being just a normal girl
00:17:52.380 to classic Abby.
00:17:54.460 Classically Abby.
00:17:55.780 Living a classic lifestyle.
00:17:57.520 And as I always love to say,
00:17:58.980 because it is my motto,
00:18:00.420 I always think it's important to be classic.
00:18:02.520 Let's be classic together.
00:18:03.680 I think it's a really wonderful goal for us to hit.
