00:00:23.220 you watch, the TV shows you watch. All of that stuff kind of percolates into your brain and

00:00:29.320 makes you feel like you are weird for having values. Everything that you're watching is coming

00:00:35.100 from a leftist point of view in Hollywood. So today I really wanted to talk about why what you're

00:00:40.900 watching is making you feel like you're different, like you're odd and like you're just alone because

00:00:47.020 the fact of the matter is that you're not. So let's get into it. So growing up we all watched a bunch

00:00:52.920 of different TV shows depending on what our parents allowed us to watch but also kind of what age you

00:00:57.600 were growing up and which order you were in the birth order because I know that my parents were

00:01:01.980 much more strict with the older siblings and I'm the youngest and by the time it got to me they were

00:01:06.820 a little bit less strict about things. And so I grew up watching some TV shows that maybe were a little

00:01:11.660 bit too old for me but definitely had a leftist skew and they definitely made me feel growing up like I

00:01:19.320 was weird because I was conservative because I was an orthodox Jew. I had religious values and no one I was

00:01:25.820 watching on TV had religious values and if they did they were considered crazy or weird. So it was

00:01:31.700 definitely something that I noticed growing up was making me feel like maybe I'm the odd one out.

00:01:37.780 Think about Friends or One Tree Hill or anything on The CW. Now on Friends all of the characters were

00:01:44.840 sleeping around pretty regularly. They were pretty promiscuous. Everyone slept with their boyfriends

00:01:50.000 or had one night stands. It was kind of part of the running joke of the show. Now think about a show

00:01:54.380 like One Tree Hill. I don't know if you watched that growing up but that was all about high schoolers.

00:01:58.580 They were all sleeping around and of course the only couple that did get married got married at 0.83

00:02:03.340 16 and it was just kind of this odd thing where they were the young ones who got married and then

00:02:08.720 of course immediately there was marital troubles. It did work out in the show which was a very nice

00:02:13.360 thing but the rest of the show it was just kind of an odd thing that they did and all the rest of the

00:02:18.040 characters were sleeping around and being very promiscuous. And if anyone was Jewish on a show for 0.95

00:02:22.540 example they weren't really keeping any of the laws. They weren't Orthodox. They were just kind

00:02:26.740 of nominally Jewish. They were culturally Jewish. And as an Orthodox Jew growing up you can imagine

00:02:31.480 that was very weird for me to see that pretty much any character who was Jewish on TV would know

00:02:36.720 cultural references but then wouldn't actually keep any of the laws or would do something like

00:02:41.220 on Friends with Ross and the Hanukkah armadillo for his son while they also had him celebrating

00:02:46.760 Christmas at the same time. So it was all very kind of mixed up not what I grew up with and didn't show

00:02:54.020 any of the values that I thought were important. And then on the other side of the spectrum you have a

00:02:58.740 woman like the Haredi character who was on an episode of House. It was called Don't Ever Change and in

00:03:04.060 that episode she refuses to have surgery on Shabbos even though the rabbi tells her that she should

00:03:09.700 because it can save her life. Her husband says that she should because it can save her life but she won't do it.

00:03:13.920 And of course it's just a kind of crazy thing which everyone knows in Judaism you can do any 0.80

00:03:19.100 medical procedure to save someone's life on the Sabbath. So for her not to have the surgery on

00:03:24.360 Sabbath it just made her look crazy. And it was just frustrating to me growing up that you would

00:03:28.860 have all these depictions of religious people being weird or not religious at all and then you

00:03:33.760 would just have normal people, high school kids, whatever, just not living valued lives. And so I would

00:03:40.080 start to wonder if I was weird because I didn't want to sleep around in high school or if it was

00:03:45.020 weird that I was dating for marriage and not for fun. Because here's the thing, even if everyone

00:03:50.200 you're hanging around with is acting just like you, when you're watching TV you think that that's a

00:03:56.080 representation of the world. It's really easy to look at TV and we can't help but see it as a reflection

00:04:01.720 of what the world really is which isn't true. And then it really seems like you're the odd one out

00:04:07.720 and it's really hard to kind of recognize that maybe that isn't the case, especially when you're

00:04:13.080 younger, especially when you're watching the stuff when you're young and impressionable.

00:04:16.440 Now think about your favorite movies. When you think about your favorite chick flicks,

00:04:20.500 most of them show people falling in love accidentally and not really having any purpose

00:04:25.660 to when they're dating. There's no purposeful dating, there's no understanding that marriage is

00:04:30.140 something that's really important, it's sort of something that kind of happens to you,

00:04:33.680 and they almost always show people having sex before they're married, and a lot of the time

00:04:37.780 it's before they're even in a serious relationship. It just kind of happens. Think about the movie

00:04:42.360 The Holiday. In The Holiday, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law sleep together before they're even dating.

00:04:47.560 They just kind of meet, sleep together, and then later it happens to work out. Think about the movie

00:04:52.160 27 Dresses. The two main characters in that sleep together before they're ever in a relationship

00:04:57.140 and then they happen to work out. Everything is backwards in these movies and it starts to make you

00:05:02.420 think if you're weird. I mean, I totally understand if you feel that way because I know that I did.

00:05:07.140 It's all to make more drama in these movies, of course, but it's also because there is a certain

00:05:11.760 agenda in Hollywood. And if that stuff is all that you're watching, then you're going to feel like

00:05:16.380 you're the odd one out and that stuff is the norm. You aren't weird for having values. You aren't weird

00:05:23.080 for wanting to dress more modestly. You aren't weird for not wanting to have sex before you're married,

00:05:27.560 and you're not weird if you want to get married and have a family. You are not alone.

00:05:31.680 It's just that TV and movies are not showing you how normal people really live. And of course,

00:05:36.360 there's also the part of this that when you're living a moral and upstanding life, life just

00:05:40.900 isn't dramatic in the same way that it's going to be when you're kind of doing crazy things with your

00:05:45.820 life decisions. And if it's not that dramatic, it's not going to make that good of television

00:05:49.640 or that great of a movie. Because at the end of the day, would you really want to live in the TV

00:05:53.620 show where you're constantly getting your heart broken or something horrible happens just so that

00:05:58.340 it makes good TV? Not really. People don't want a dramatic life just for the cameras.

00:06:03.020 So my point isn't that you shouldn't watch TV or that you should stop watching movies, but it's more

00:06:09.280 to recognize that what you're watching isn't really a reflection of what normal people's lives are like,

00:06:14.280 and that you're not weird for wanting to live a more valued life. And if you are looking for something

00:06:25.440 on that. My parents would bring that home on tape, and we would watch it on our old VHS machine.

00:06:30.500 And it was awesome. And I loved it. And it also made me think, hey, this is more normal. The way

00:06:35.140 that my parents are raising us is more normal. And it just kind of gave me a little bit more
