00:03:44.620 I spent my first 26 years in China
00:03:47.820 and my entire school years in the Cultural Revolution.
00:03:52.540 And I witnessed the entire 10 years of the revolution.
00:03:56.660 And after that, I was sent to the countryside by Mao
00:03:59.280 to get my re-education.
00:04:01.020 I was only able to go to college after Mao died
00:04:04.280 and to study English.
00:04:06.440 In 1986, I was able to come to America
00:04:09.860 to pursue my graduate study.
00:04:12.440 And I've been here for more than 30 years,
00:04:14.560 never involved politically until 2020.
00:04:18.620 And that's the time I know that I have to speak out

00:04:29.600 and deliver that less than one-minute speech,
00:04:32.920 which to my great surprise, went viral.

00:08:20.660 against the leadership
00:08:21.860 of the Chinese Communist Party.
00:08:23.760 And to bring people up to speed

00:08:28.260 but it's in the wake of the Great Leap Forward,

00:08:32.460 that is instituted

00:43:38.020 didn't know what it was called or i'd
00:43:39.960 never seen it before in the educational
00:43:41.980 space and then i heard about this
00:43:43.900 classical education educational model

00:43:47.460 maryland called saint jerome's
00:43:48.840 academy which features it and their
00:43:51.260 story is amazing but they turned this
00:43:53.560 failing school around into this wildly
00:43:55.680 flourishing school and when i heard the
00:43:57.300 story i said that's it that's exactly
00:43:59.080 what i want for my kids but there were
00:44:01.540 no schools near us that had that
00:44:03.760 classical or catholic liberal education
00:44:05.660 model um that was so prevalent for
00:44:08.260 two thousand years i said i need to i
00:44:10.700 need to start something for my own
00:44:12.120 kids because the time's wasting i only
00:44:14.440 have so many years for my kids i need
00:44:15.840 to i need to do something now
00:44:17.020 and that's exactly right and there's
00:44:20.300 there's so many of these that i know

00:44:29.820 out there as another example um where

00:45:21.080 them in fact almost all of them didn't go
00:45:23.540 to a public school they they studied at
00:45:25.520 home they were homeschooled for most of
00:45:27.020 their education and then they went out
00:45:28.760 and they supplemented that in a free
00:45:30.720 market economy of schools not in some
00:45:32.960 um some uh factory school where they
00:45:35.960 were um you know ideology was just
00:45:38.620 crammed on their throat
00:45:39.400 that's right and so and these factory
00:45:42.720 schools that's it's so funny you mentioned
00:45:44.400 it that way because uh it's a hundred
00:45:46.520 percent right this was this system was
00:45:48.100 created by the germans for factory workers
00:45:51.840 and it it teaches you much more your grade
00:45:54.620 points and this this whole this whole
00:45:56.500 business went back to the idea that we're
00:45:58.960 going to be crammed through that's an
00:46:00.240 assembly line form of school as opposed
00:46:03.180 to actual mastery of concepts mastery of
00:46:07.540 the arts mastery of whatever specific
00:46:11.060 discipline it is that you're focused on
00:46:12.600 it's pushing you through to maximize as
00:46:15.100 many people as possible i could make some
00:46:17.380 army jokes there by the way but i'm not
00:46:18.840 going to do that right now even though we
00:46:20.380 have some of you guys on you know what i'm
00:46:22.000 talking about uh but i would never do that
00:46:23.940 because we love our army we love we love
00:46:25.940 our we love our uh our backpackers and
00:46:28.600 and what it what it comes down to though
00:46:30.600 is that's not really educating anybody is
00:46:33.320 it it's not and you know for us we went
00:46:37.140 through public schools in all likelihood

00:46:40.920 don't know any differently um but american
00:46:43.440 education wasn't always the way it is
00:46:45.200 today uh as i mentioned the founding the
00:46:47.440 time of the founding fathers we had the
00:46:49.160 most educated population in the world and
00:46:52.100 those folks were educated using
00:46:54.100 predominantly homeschooling methodology
00:46:55.880 these cheap primer books that their their
00:46:58.300 parents would teach them with they would
00:47:00.080 have tutors they'd have uh local churches
00:47:02.680 providing education entrepreneurs out
00:47:05.200 there and we provided we created the most
00:47:07.900 highly educated system in the world and but
00:47:11.340 this changed as a result of some early
00:47:14.280 educational reformers horace mann is one
00:47:16.440 john dewey is another where they had some
00:47:19.760 ideas about creating utopia or communism
00:47:22.180 uh create a creating a system where the
00:47:25.980 state controls the education in the
00:47:28.660 formation of children they had a failed
00:47:31.140 experiment of creating a commune called
00:47:33.560 new harmony in indiana back in the 1820s
00:47:36.400 and they said the reason this failed is
00:47:38.520 because our children were too formed the
00:47:41.080 people were too formed so we need to get
00:47:42.340 the children as early as we possibly can
00:47:44.320 when they're a blank slate and we need to
00:47:46.280 form them the principles of communism so
00:47:49.320 they can uh realize this uh utopia on earth
00:47:53.180 and so these ideas got to germany and
00:47:56.300 informed their educational system there
00:47:58.200 where they created a state-based educational
00:48:00.420 system which then came back through horace
00:48:02.520 mann to the state of massachusetts and
00:48:04.520 then spread into america where we had these
00:48:07.880 schools that where the state created the
00:48:10.360 formation where they thought the state
00:48:11.620 believed it could form children better than
00:48:13.380 parents could uh and said we want to uh
00:48:16.420 indoctrinate these children with these
00:48:18.340 socialist ideologies and this is where they
00:48:20.580 can become slaves to the state and this is
00:48:23.500 where the belief of this the state being in
00:48:27.380 charge of a cat of this came from the
