00:32:17.280As of, you know, taping, there hasn't been an enormous breakthrough, but there's always this sort of helter-skelter sort of talk around every time the Iranians come to New York since Trump has been president, frankly.
00:32:30.940There have been some rumors of, well, Przewski on try to bump into Trump.
00:32:34.700And there are considerations on both our ends.
00:32:38.060There are hawks in the U.S. that want to prevent Trump from meeting Pazeshkian or Arachi.
00:32:42.340And there are hawks in Iran who don't want Pazeshkian to meet with Trump or Arachi to meet with Trump.
00:32:50.320And so this is key, by the way, because Pazeshkian has actually played himself a bit more of a pragmatist role within the system, would you say?
00:32:59.580Yeah. So, I mean, this is something that true Iran hawks don't like because they want to argue this is an autocratic system and there aren't actually politics.
00:33:07.080But the reality is Pazeskian is part of the reformist wing of the party.
00:33:11.520So the former president, Raisi, died in June of 2024 during that helicopter crash, sort of at the zenith of the Biden administration.
00:33:23.340He is, you know, he's got a real kind of father of the nation sort of vibe to him.
00:33:27.900He's a trained heart surgeon, sort of famous for that.
00:33:31.220He's been in the health ministry of several sort of moderate governments, again, within the relative spectrum of Iranian politics in the current system.
00:33:39.760And additionally, because of Moshtaba Khamenei's lack of public appearances and no one knows if the Supreme Leader is truly alive or in what sort of shape he's in,
00:33:50.880Pazeshkian has recently said that he had a seven-hour meeting with Moshtaba and that he was in, quote, perfect health.
00:33:56.640Now, you can believe this or not, but Podetskian's credibility as it would be kind of like Ben Carson saying this, this is a famous, you know, medical person of his own right, and it has credibility to the government.
00:34:09.180So Podetskian is in a delicate balance.
00:34:11.600He's willing to work with the hardliners to, for one, himself survive and his own political system survive.
00:34:17.360But two, he is very much an olive branch to the country's center, you know, from the regime.

00:40:11.560Now, Kurt, we know that the president, President Trump, is going to be meeting with Xi Jinping.

00:40:29.140how should we look at what's the White House's goal with vis-a-vis China, whether or not they
00:40:36.080can get them to help get some leverage on the Iranians? Have we seen the Chinese really step
00:40:42.540up to play much of a role? Because from what I've been hearing, they've been very hands-off
00:40:46.720with the Iranians. Yeah, I mean, I think we don't know the full picture because, you know,
00:40:52.000any involvement intelligence-wise or weapon sales-wise can be surreptitious, but it reminds
00:40:56.900be very much of the Russia-Ukraine war, where there was a lot of reporting and speculations
00:41:02.620that the Chinese would provide, quote, lethal aid to the Russians. And I think that's been
00:41:06.740mostly forthcoming. And I think you've seen the same thing with the Iran scenario. I'm sure
00:41:13.420segments of Iranian society or the Iranian government would prefer an enormous bailout
00:41:18.340by the Chinese. But the fact is that we haven't seen that at this point. They've really let the
00:41:25.480Chinese sort of handled this, sorry, let the Iranians sort of handle this on their own. And
00:41:30.800it's obviously resulted in a stalemate. But you could have imagined a situation in which the
00:41:35.380Chinese tried to bog down the United States even further, you know, sort of a Korea war or Vietnam
00:41:42.080war sort of precedent. But of course, China is a much different society here, I think, than they
00:41:46.600were back then. I think that the truth of the matter is the top two things that are likely to
00:41:51.780be on the agenda are AI and Taiwan. No, I think it's exactly right. And I
00:42:00.300agree with you. From what I've heard talking to contacts in the administration and just others
00:42:04.600around D.C. is that the Chinese are kind of more than willing to allow for the Americans to sort
00:42:11.400of, you know, sit back and say, look, it sounds like you got a bit of a problem in the Strait
00:42:15.700of Hormuz. That sounds like a you problem. And one of the reasons for this, by the way,
00:42:19.980And people point out, of course, that China is the largest customer of Iranian petroleum.
00:42:25.720However, they've built up massive stockpiles to be able to withstand a shock to the system, a supply-side shock, the same way that we're seeing right now.
00:42:35.800We're seeing this experience in the diesel market because China had already built up these massive stockpiles, many of them floating.
00:42:42.280They have these micro refineries that they're using.
00:42:45.100So they have a very sophisticated system for this.
00:42:48.000and they're they're basically looking to say we can withstand this now there are real questions
00:42:53.140i think as to whether or not the irgc uh the gas lines in within iran are also able to withstand
00:43:00.580this but at the same time their regime is set up in such a way where i just don't know that we're
00:43:05.060going to get to regime change the way some people think through the blockade or economic means
00:43:10.740however getting to a deal does seem like it's in the cards i'm pretty skeptical about regime change
00:43:16.900job i mean if it comes it comes i think we should deal with the government that is put up by the
00:43:21.140people for better or worse and so i understand this is a highly repressive society but they did
00:43:25.740have a revolution and this is their country and there are some elections there and so i think
00:43:29.680these are the representatives of the iranian system more or less i'm asked to the actual
00:43:34.320chinese uh involvement here i think you're quite right i think the real question is if we were to
00:43:39.360see another energy crisis like the spring whether the chinese would curb demand like they did in
00:43:43.620the spring which i think actually kept oil prices not going 160 180 200 and we've seen evidence the
00:43:50.960chinese basically being able to seamlessly go back and forth between purchasing large quantities of
00:43:56.540this stuff and then moving into their green tech the question is whether or not they would sort of
00:44:00.140help the united states however intentionally or not if this we have a second round of this war
00:44:05.220i think moreover though the chinese iranian relationship shows uh that those more hawkish
00:44:10.520voices who posit that there is a, quote, axis of autocracies that China, Russia, North Korea,
00:44:16.860Iran all sort of meet in a room like it's Team America World Police and plot against the United
00:44:23.580States. I think that's really only so true so far as it goes. The reality is that this is a
00:44:29.920Marxist-Leninist system, a state atheist system, and they don't have a ton of level of comfort
00:44:36.160with a Shia Islamic theocracy on the other end of the Eurasian landmass. I think they are
00:44:42.640allies of convenience, but they haven't formalized in any sort of meaningful way,
00:44:47.160like a NATO-style arrangement that we see between the U.S. and Europe. I think we overstate the
00:44:53.960degree to which these guys collaborate in our own peril, because at a certain point,
00:44:57.120we make it a self-fulfilling prophecy. Well, it's interesting to bring that up,
00:45:01.720Because the same works in reverse, that the Iranian regime being a theological regime, a theocracy, if you will, it also puts them in a position where they don't want to make a deal with an autocratic atheist regime.
00:45:16.000It's the same reason they didn't have close deals with the Soviet Union in the past when the Soviets were making great, great outreaches and forays to the Iranians to do so.
00:45:27.000They said, look, you're an atheistic, you know, communist country.
00:45:30.480We're not interested in that. We have a completely different system. And so they've actually pushed for a great more deal of autonomy in the international system, possibly to their detriment, because this has allowed them to be open to foreign tax without the beneficiary without being the beneficiaries of this.
00:45:49.040any mutual defense treaties because they have none yeah i think that's quite right especially
00:45:53.820i mean look this you see the man on the screen there prejeshian is the successor of the former
00:45:58.180president raizy who i mentioned who died raizy was somebody who actually although while a cleric
00:46:03.520and extremely conservative wanted to tilt towards the chinese he thought negotiations with the west
00:46:07.960are provocative they don't do anything and to a certain extent he was vindicated by the war in
00:46:11.980iran but the reality is uh a more balanced portfolio for the iranians uh makes sense they
00:46:17.920have a population that is not entirely as nearly as religious as the government uh they have a
00:46:23.120western tilting uh population uh that very much wants uh some sort of a modus vende with the west
00:46:29.380and i think it makes sense for them uh to sort of be balanced between the chinese and the americans
00:46:34.640and the europeans so i think what sort of confects and confuses that whole situation
00:46:38.560uh is the israel quotient um but the reality is even today after all of this war donald trump
00:46:46.160could still get a better nuclear deal, I believe, than Barack Obama did and get out of this war.
00:46:51.480And I think it remains the best course of action. That's what the MOU was. That's what Vice
00:46:55.820President Vance was trying to advance. And look, say what you will for the administration, say what
00:46:59.980you will for the attempt at the MOU. I don't see anything better. I don't see any attempt better.
00:47:05.020I only see basically a binary choice, which is we stay in this mediocre, crummy stalemate,
00:47:12.060or we escalate, or we actually materially try to get out of this war. And I think that's what
