Summary

It's April Fool's Day and the Liberals are taking a victory lap over their failed plan to get government back in the business of building affordable homes in Canada. Today's mashup is based on a quote from Ronald Reagan and the idea that the private sector can do this better than government.

00:00:00.000 Hi, it's John and welcome to the channel. It is Tuesday, April the 1st, 5.19 a.m. with the big
00:00:05.500 blue mug of coffee. It is April Fool's Day today. Don't forget, if you fill up your tank today and
00:00:11.280 prices have dropped a little bit because the consumer carbon tax is gone, be sure to thank
00:00:15.900 Pierre Polyev. It's because of him that's gone down. Don't allow the liberals to take a victory
00:00:20.120 lap today. So today I've got something a little bit different for you. I woke up in a bit of a
00:00:24.100 quandary. What am I going to talk about today? Big news yesterday was Mark Carney rolled out
00:00:28.540 his communist-style government housing program. We're getting government back in the business
00:00:34.000 of building affordable homes. Acting as a developer, Canada, Build Canada Homes will work with industry
00:00:42.060 to build affordable homes at scale, including on public lands. We'll make good on the promise
00:00:49.000 to unlock federal lands for home building on a post-war scale. Build Canada Homes will also
00:00:56.060 provide $10 billion of low-cost financing to builders to construct deeply affordable homes
00:01:03.520 for those most in need, as well as housing for students and seniors.
00:01:08.620 Where he really did contrast himself from what Pierre Polyev is doing. Polyev's plan has been
00:01:14.140 to eliminate the gatekeepers, and that means less government control. And when I thought about
00:01:19.460 that today, I thought about a saying from a famous politician of the past. I'm going to do that
00:01:25.960 today and use a few quotes from the great communicator Ronald Reagan in this video. All right? I've got
00:01:32.920 three of them for you. But before we get to that, let's go back not too long ago and let's find out what
00:01:39.600 the liberal policy was when it came to building housing in this country.
00:01:44.200 And I'll be blunt as well. Housing isn't a primary federal responsibility.
00:01:49.480 You probably know that clip. It wasn't very long ago that he said that. So what has changed?
00:01:55.800 Why all of a sudden are the liberals talking about housing? That's because a leader came along.
00:02:00.920 A leader with vision who wants to make things better for you. The leader is Pierre Polyev. I've said many
00:02:08.360 times on this channel that Polyev has been leading the government for a couple of years. He's led on a
00:02:13.880 number of different issues and certainly on this one. Until Polyev started talking about housing,
00:02:19.240 housing wasn't a government responsibility. I mean, Mark Carney wouldn't have walked out yesterday and
00:02:24.440 talked about this if it wasn't for Pierre Polyev leading on this issue. And he's been leading on
00:02:29.480 this issue for a very long time. The liberals have cocked things up when it comes to housing in this
00:02:35.640 country. They've let far too many people into the country. Too many people, too few houses, housing prices
00:02:41.800 go up. Supply and demand, right? So what their plan is, is to fix all the other plans that screwed up
00:02:48.440 for them. They've got what are called the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, Canada Housing Accelerator
00:02:53.720 Fund. They've hardly built any houses. Big government agencies. Lots of bureaucracy. Lots of money.
00:03:00.280 Absolutely nothing. Which made me think of another one of my favorite Ronald Reagan quotes. And here he is
00:03:06.120 here. This goes back to 1964. A time for choosing, I think, was the name of the speech. Listen to what
00:03:13.160 he says here. And the more the plans fail, the more the planners plan. I love that saying. And, you know,
00:03:19.400 government has already created a number of housing programs in this country. Canada Housing Infrastructure
00:03:24.840 Fund, Canada Housing Accelerator Fund. Both of them have failed. They haven't built many houses.
00:03:30.280 And they spent billions of your dollars employing hundreds of people, no doubt, pushing paper around
00:03:36.120 to get nothing done. The more the plans fail, the more the planners plan. And Carney's is just these other
00:03:41.560 plans on steroids. Complete government control of housing. And we should open this up to the private sector.
00:03:47.720 That's what it should be about. The private sector can do this better than government. I'll get to my
00:03:51.800 next Reagan quote in just a moment. But what is Carney's plan? Well, he laid all this out
00:03:57.320 just a year ago in the Globe and Mail. Here's Kosman Zerdsa. I believe that's how you pronounce
00:04:02.280 his name. I apologize if it's not correct. And he rightfully says, Carney laid out his affordable
00:04:08.120 homes plan in a Globe and Mail op-ed last year. He wants to tear down single detached homes,
00:04:13.240 remove density limits, and build government-run housing projects with no parking. Young Canadians
00:04:17.960 dreaming of owning a home deserve better than this. And I sit here in Southeast Calgary. I've got a
00:04:23.320 modest house, nice little backyard. My flowers are going to start growing pretty soon. And that's
00:04:27.160 what your dream is. That's not what Mark Carney's dream is. Remember, he's the climate zealot as well.
00:04:31.880 So he wants to make sure he controls where you live, where you can go, what you can eat. All of
00:04:36.120 these things are his plans. Here's the article right here, special to the Globe and Mail, Mark Carney.
00:04:41.240 This was just over a year ago on March the 14th. I'm not going to read this whole thing to you,
00:04:46.280 but let's go over here. And let's read this first slide that
00:04:50.040 Cosman put up here. First, we need to build up rather than out.
00:04:55.000 That means no semi-detached or single detached housing. Focus housing growth in cities and
00:05:02.360 communities where there is existing infrastructure such as roads, water lines, libraries, and community
00:05:07.320 centers is faster, less costly, and more climate-friendly. To enable building in these areas, we need to
00:05:12.520 legalize density. It simply much would be easier for a home builder to turn a 75-year-old bungalow into a
00:05:18.760 cluster of townhouses or an aging strip mall into a modern and affordable mid-rise apartment complex.
00:05:25.640 So there you go, folks. No backyard for you. To do that, government should eliminate unit
00:05:30.440 maximums, abolish parking minimums, and allow taller buildings and more density near transit lines
00:05:36.040 as of right. So that is Mark Carney's plan for you. Complete government control and you're going to live
00:05:41.800 in a box. No house. And that's not what Polyev's talking about. He wants to build a home. What would
00:05:46.840 Ronald Reagan have to say about this? And here's his famous saying. You probably saw this one coming
00:05:52.360 a mile away. Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem.
00:06:00.280 No matter what you may think of Ronald Reagan and his politics, he sure was quotable and boy could he
00:06:05.880 deliver a line. They called him the great communicator. Now I've got another clip coming
00:06:10.600 up from Reagan in just a moment. I'm going to tie that in with a group of people who could be dooming
00:06:17.640 this country to generations of problems. So stay tuned for that. It's a less well-known clip. I might
00:06:24.600 end with another clip as well. Maybe I'll make it four from Reagan. But before we do that, I think
00:06:30.200 Pierre Polyev is really missing out in an opportunity to show how much of a leader he really is. I've
00:06:35.400 mentioned two things in this video. Right off the top, I talked about the carbon tax. It was his crusade
00:06:40.440 that led the liberals to get rid of the carbon tax on the consumers today. The other thing is housing.
00:06:47.880 They wouldn't be talking about housing if it wasn't for Pierre Polyev. Why is he not taking credit for
00:06:52.360 these things? He's led on car theft. Liberals didn't mention it. I've said this before in my videos. Car theft,
00:06:58.680 crime, drugs, other things as well. So he should be using this to his advantage in this election
00:07:04.040 campaign. So the last clip from Reagan, I'm directing towards the boomers. An article in the National
00:07:13.480 Post talking about how the boomers, it's not about ideological lines here in this election,
00:07:18.760 it's generational. And the boomers, sitting back in their nice homes, mortgage paid off,
00:07:25.160 car paid off, pension, everything's just fine for them. They've retired, and they're going to sell
00:07:31.000 the country down the river for elbows up and Canada Strong and Mark Carney. And they're going to sell out
00:07:37.720 their grandkids as well. So listen to Ronald Reagan in this clip. I think this one is pretty right on point.
00:07:45.240 But great as our tax burden is, it has not kept pace with public spending. For decades,
00:07:54.120 we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children's future for the temporary
00:08:00.600 convenience of the present. To continue this long trend is to guarantee tremendous social, cultural,
00:08:08.920 political, and economic upheavals. That's from the inauguration in 1981. Amazing to hear the man speak.
00:08:17.560 And he's right. Deficit after deficit, mortgaging our future for some temporary convenience.
00:08:24.520 That's you boomers. You're selling the country and your grandchildren down the river for some temporary
00:08:31.880 convenience. I know this is a little bit different. I appreciate you watching. I really do.
00:08:37.400 If you liked the video, please give me a thumbs up. Subscribe to the channel. Ring the bell for
00:08:42.920 notifications. I'm going to play one more Reagan clip, a famous one from him for sure. And I'll see
00:08:50.840 you in the next one. I think you all know that I've always felt the nine most terrifying words in the
00:08:57.640 English language are, I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
