00:00:00.000 well it appears as though the fish wars are well and truly on in newfoundland for weeks
00:00:10.720 newfoundland fishermen have been protesting outside the confederation building in st john's
00:00:15.380 now if you aren't a newfoundlander you probably didn't know this was happening until yesterday
00:00:18.880 of course when the royal newfoundland constabulary showed up in riot gear and rode in on horseback
00:00:23.920 just like they did in ottawa during the freedom convoy now i wasn't aware of what was going on
00:00:28.260 in newfoundland but it turns out that just like it is across our country a small handful of processing
00:00:33.040 plants and corporations completely control the newfoundland fishery in oligopoly headed by a
00:00:38.480 foreign corporation when you just know it control the price of fish across the province and because
00:00:43.440 these protesters are peaceful blue-collar working canadians who want a better life in a better
00:00:48.380 country and are not foreign protesters advocating for a foreign cause like palestine or calistan
00:00:53.840 well they get treated like violent criminals and thugs the horses get called in and we now have
00:00:58.940 unconfirmed reports that a newfoundland fisherman is in hospital with a broken hip because of the
00:01:03.520 police response the double standard in this country when it comes to protesting is completely out of
00:01:08.440 control and someone needs to call it out drop a like in the video help us out by subscribing to the
00:01:12.760 true north youtube channel stick around for the ratio of the week and the comment question for the
00:01:16.800 episode is this why do working canadians who are protesting for a better country and a better life
00:01:22.520 get treated like criminals and thugs while protesters advocating for a foreign cause get treated with kid
00:01:29.000 gloves let me know your answer in the comments below and let's get into it well what originally
00:01:33.520 started out as a small protester over the price of snow crab a few weeks ago has now ballooned into a
00:01:38.880 much larger protest outside of the confederation building in st john's yesterday hundreds of fishermen
00:01:45.600 gathered outside the legislature to protest the provincial government which also happened to be
00:01:50.240 the day the government was supposed to release their budget now that didn't happen yesterday because
00:01:54.500 of the protests outside take a look at some of the scenes
00:01:58.000 from the reports that we have seen this was an entirely peaceful protest until the royal newfoundland
00:02:25.000 constabulary showed up with their riot horses now of course if you were looking to rile up an
00:02:29.640 already angry crowd there isn't really a better way to do that than to bring in horses to treat these
00:02:35.160 people as if they are rioters and not hard-working peaceful protesters the legacy media is reporting that
00:02:41.400 these protesters blocked the entrance for media and staff members to enter the
00:02:45.640 legislature on budget day now from what we can see the protests only happen to be outside of one entrance of the
00:02:51.320 building now take a look at this video of newfoundland premier andrew fury's communications advisor
00:02:56.280 attempting to walk through the middle of the protest before being stopped and turned around
00:03:01.320 by some angry protesters
00:03:13.400 now of course i do not condone the language or the behavior of protesters who are treating a woman like
00:03:18.280 this absolutely not but the reality is this communications advisor knew exactly what she was
00:03:23.240 doing there are of course alternate entrances to a legislature building like that and with the media
00:03:28.920 right there watching the entire thing i think it's safe to say that this communications advisor
00:03:34.200 got what she was looking for we have confirmed reports that a protester had to be taken away on a
00:03:38.840 stretcher and unconfirmed reports that that protester has a broken hip now was there really a reason
00:03:44.200 to bring in the horses to bring in the riot gear and to treat these protesters like they are a violent
00:03:49.320 and dangerous riot of course not but that's the way it works in our country if you didn't know this by
00:03:53.800 now you see we're looking at a confluence of problems here for one corporate cartel-like control
00:03:59.080 of our most important industries happens to be one of those problems another problem is how our
00:04:03.720 government treats protesters i don't know about you but i'm getting sick and tired of this double
00:04:08.120 standard in our country if you are a hard-working peaceful canadian protester who wants to be able to
00:04:13.160 put food on your own table or make a medical decision that should be yours and yours alone to
00:04:16.840 make you get treated like a dangerous criminal meanwhile if you protest foreign causes like the
00:04:22.280 pro-hamas protesters or the calistanis who are literally waving daggers and swords around at police
00:04:27.880 you get treated with kid gloves you get served coffee on the side of a highway so the police are
00:04:32.760 now becoming our little messenger now of course we know why that is right because the liberal
00:04:38.280 government and the ndp see the pro-hamas protesters in the calistanis as a voting base now the trudeau
00:04:44.840 liberals make open gestures to the pro-palestine crowd all the time and when it comes to the
00:04:49.720 calistanis and jagmeet singh well i think we all know the answer to that but i want to get into the
00:04:53.640 details of the newfoundland fishery because once you understand that it's pretty easy to understand
00:04:57.880 why we're now seeing a bunch of angry newfoundlanders wanting to be able to put food on their own table
00:05:02.280 like i said before the newfoundland fishery is controlled by a handful of processing plants
00:05:07.080 known locally as the big three now the corporation at the top happens to be royal greenland a crown
00:05:13.800 corporation based out of greenland owned by the danish government now the other two corporations
00:05:18.520 of the big three are both based in newfoundland ocean choice international and berry group inc the
00:05:24.520 protesters want an open market they want to be able to sell their fish and their catch to expanded
00:05:29.560 markets outside of newfoundland the legacy media asked one of the protesters jim chidley what their
00:05:34.520 message was we're here to stand up for our rights we don't want to be controlled by this process or by
00:05:39.320 the government anymore we're looking for free enterprise we want to be able to come in with
00:05:42.920 our product be able to have a choice where we sell to which we don't anymore so that is what we're
00:05:47.240 doing we're looking for a better life for our kids because right now there is no future in the fishery
00:05:51.800 another protester from central bona vista dave pickett got more into the details here we want free
00:05:56.840 enterprise but we also want our money we got kicked in the head last year by the plants we went from
00:06:01.640 seven dollars fifty down to two dollars twenty two thirds of our income we had a job to stay at it
00:06:06.920 last year but it's a whole new ball game this year it won't be worth going out in the water this year
00:06:11.560 and if you are only getting two dollars a pound you can't afford to pay your crew members very much
00:06:15.960 all the plants got together and give you a price no competition that's why we wanted to open it up
00:06:20.520 we want to be able to ship out our product and they said the plant is going to hold back 20
00:06:24.920 the fishermen will never go along with that if they give us two dollars fifty per pound this year
00:06:29.000 and 20 is 50 cents so we're only going to get two dollars per pound so they'll pay what they held
00:06:34.040 back in december month if everything goes right by them so the price per pound of snow crab went from
00:06:38.600 seven dollars to two dollars two-thirds of their income basically gone and meanwhile newfoundland
00:06:43.400 fishermen are only able to sell to newfoundland processing plants and you can see why they do
00:06:48.600 that right because you want to keep newfoundland jobs in the province you want the processing plants
00:06:52.360 to hire newfoundlanders and you want to make sure that fishermen go to those processing plants
00:06:56.520 and not undercut them by going out of province but the problem as i mentioned before is the big
00:07:01.960 three with royal greenland a foreign corporation sitting at the top according to a 2020 investigation
00:07:08.520 by the independent a progressive newfoundland-based news outlet the big three have a complete strangle
00:07:13.880 hold on the newfoundland fishery with between 8 and 12 registered processing plants each in the
00:07:18.920 province the big three collectively own 32 percent 29 of 90 of all registered facilities and 38 26 of 69
00:07:28.120 of all registered primary processing facilities for perspective the next biggest processor in the
00:07:34.680 province has five plants labrador fishermen's union shrimp company limited with all others owning one or two
00:07:41.160 according to jason sullivan a harvester on bay bulls of the avalon peninsula the current system favors these
00:07:47.400 large multinational corporations like royal greenland royal greenland is a crown corporation from another
00:07:52.760 country that's getting a better benefit from the fishery of newfoundland than the people in the
00:07:56.760 actual communities now i don't know all the intricacies of this industry and i'm not going to pretend like
00:08:01.160 i do but the idea that a foreign crown corporation has such a stranglehold on the newfoundland fishery
00:08:07.400 doesn't sit well with me i don't like it one bit and if these fishermen are unable to sell outside of
00:08:12.760 their province and it's having a serious impact on their bottom line if they're no longer able to put
00:08:17.800 food on their own table then they have every right to be protesting and on a larger point newfoundland
00:08:23.080 is one of the most resource rich provinces in our country newfoundland has an insane amount of oil
00:08:28.200 off their coast they have gold mines copper mines iron ore mines not to mention of course their fishery
00:08:34.360 they're up to their gills in resources and yet the province and the people in newfoundland are still
00:08:39.960 some of the poorest in our country in fact newfoundland is now back to being a have not
00:08:43.800 province they're now back on equalization payments newfoundland has no business not being an incredibly
00:08:49.160 wealthy province something is going on here i'm not quite sure what it is but i'm interested and i
00:08:55.160 think these fishermen have every right to protest because they have been protesting peacefully they've
00:08:59.480 not been protesting for a foreign cause they don't hold prohibited weapons they don't intimidate
00:09:04.840 people at their place of worship they're protesting for free enterprise they're protesting
00:09:09.720 to be able to break free from a cartel like oligopoly dominating their industry driving down their
00:09:15.560 prices the fishermen are back today outside the legislature and so are the police in full-on riot
00:09:20.520 gear and from what we can tell these fishermen aren't going anywhere so pay attention canada
00:09:24.760 this could all get very interesting all right ratio of the wheat time the winner this week is the
00:09:29.080 liberal party of canada they're really trying hard to change the meaning of words these days especially
00:09:34.280 when it comes to the carbon tax of course they've rebranded it as a carbon rebate trying to make it
00:09:40.440 seem as though you earn money by paying a tax with the canada carbon rebate they say also known as the
00:09:46.920 carbon tax we're putting more money back into canadians pockets as we fight climate change
00:09:52.440 pierre paulio and his conservatives would cut your rebates and our progress we won't let them this is
00:09:57.240 what political panic looks like because even liberal premiers like newfoundland's andrew fury
00:10:01.880 have now come out against the carbon tax but here we go guys a true classic for ratio of the week
00:10:07.480 we've got 3.3 000 replies to only 930 likes it's funny how the definition of a rebate is a partial
00:10:15.400 refund of the cost of an item why does the liberal government try to change the meaning of words so
00:10:20.280 often why is canada the only country that has a carbon tax what climate change have a look at the
00:10:25.480 last 100 years hasn't changed much the hottest day ever recorded was in july 1913 there's been fires
00:10:31.720 for thousands of years it's a tax you are taking more than giving back pointless nothing to do with
00:10:38.920 climate it's just a tax it's good to see canadians not buying into the bs anymore all right everyone
00:10:45.080 that's going to do it for us this week on the show thank you so much for tuning in
00:10:48.200 my name is harrison faulkner and this is ratio
