00:00:00.000 Well, the war of words continues between the United States and Canada over the handling
00:00:09.820 of hundreds of forest fires and the clouds of smoke drifting south.
00:00:15.620 Prime Minister Carney and President Trump were spotted having what appears to be a
00:00:21.140 serious conversation during the FIFA World Cup.
00:00:25.580 Trump later told reporters that he demanded Kearney control the spread of the fires and
00:00:31.020 the immense clouds of smoke drifting into his country. I told him, I mean, you got to stop
00:00:36.220 these fires from coming in and, you know, poisoning our air. Our air has been poisoned.
00:00:42.060 I have a good relationship with Mark Kearney, but, you know, we got to stop the fires up there.
00:00:47.340 If we can help them, we'll help them. But maybe they should pay us some damages or something,
00:00:52.700 or we should do some tariffs, but it was terrible.
00:00:55.700 I mean, you had businesses closing, in particular Michigan.
00:00:59.820 If you look at Detroit, the Detroit-Michigan area, they had to close everything.
00:01:03.520 They had to close car plants and a lot of other things.
00:01:06.460 So I've never remembered this happening.
00:01:09.140 Over the last four or five years, you saw it starting to take place.
00:01:13.440 I've never remembered it happening.
00:01:15.240 Premier Doug Ford from Ontario is pushing back against U.S. politicians,
00:01:20.100 threatening Canada over the fire situation.
00:01:23.280 The administration in the U.S. and congresspeople writing these letters
00:01:27.640 and blaming us and so on and so forth, right?
00:01:30.400 You don't get on and start threatening and criticizing because guess what?
00:01:33.940 One day it's going to be your turn.
00:01:36.580 And we're going to be down there without hesitation to support our neighbors,
00:01:40.340 which we should be.
00:01:42.280 But all the rhetoric going on there, and it's not from all Americans.
00:01:46.820 I'll tell you, Americans love Canadians.
00:01:49.040 And we Canadians love Americans.
00:01:51.120 But to make the comments they did through the administration unacceptable.
00:01:56.600 Last week, a Michigan candidate for governor, John James, issued a strong warning to Canada about the thick smoke drifting into his state, Michigan, from Canadian forest fires.
00:02:08.380 He posted a message saying, Canada, no excuses. Stop the smoke.
00:02:13.960 A federal government department has now deleted its accounts on X, the social media site.
00:02:22.460 The Department of Women and Gender Equality blames hurtful remarks from the public on social media for the move.
00:02:30.420 Blacklock's reporter has obtained an Access to Information memo that included this quote.
00:02:35.760 Posts to the channel have attracted a significant volume of comments consisting of hate directed towards women and LGBTQ people and to the department.
00:02:48.880 More generally, said the May 25th memo, the situation has created significant mental strain for employees charged with managing these channels.
00:03:00.920 The memo provided no examples.
00:03:03.840 The department's four Twitter accounts were removed May 29.
00:03:08.360 Okay, guys, let's be real.
00:03:09.880 Crime is up.
00:03:10.920 Repeat offenders are released on bail.
00:03:13.360 Police responses are slower than ever.
00:03:15.640 And in many places, law-abiding citizens are expected to just hope nothing bad happens.
00:03:21.280 That's not good enough.
00:03:22.520 And that's why I'm very pleased today to be telling you about Berna.
00:03:25.460 And I'm so pleased to have this partnership with Juno News because I actually own one myself.
00:03:29.780 I bought one before we ever had this deal with Berna.
00:03:32.480 So what is Berna?
00:03:33.040 It is a non-lethal self-defense launcher that gives you real protection without carrying a
00:03:39.860 firearm. It looks like a firearm. It kind of feels like a firearm, but it's not. It's non-lethal. So
00:03:44.560 Berna launchers look and feel like a real handgun, but they don't use bullets. Instead, they fire
00:03:49.340 powerful kinetic rounds designed to stop a threat from a distance up to 60 feet without lethal force.
00:03:55.960 Here's why it matters. You don't need a firearms license. You don't need a background check.
00:04:00.400 There's no waiting period. There's no permanent life-altering consequences if you're forced into
00:04:06.520 the situation where you have to defend yourself. Use the link in the description or visit
00:04:10.620 junomarketplace.com slash Berna for special offers. Make sure that you're prepared. It's
00:04:16.020 better to be safe than sorry. Our guest today is Vest Sobat, who spent 40 years as a business
00:04:21.680 executive with a plastics company, and he's also executive director of the Coalition for Concerned
00:04:28.300 Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada.
00:04:30.740 Welcome, Vess.
00:04:31.960 Thank you so much, Mark.
00:04:33.480 You're also an engineer, which I'm sure comes in handy.
00:04:37.660 Sometimes, sometimes.
00:04:39.040 Not always, yeah.
00:04:42.320 Let's talk about the little chat that Mark Carney had with President Trump
00:04:46.820 at the FIFA World Cup game.
00:04:48.740 By the way, did you watch the game?
00:04:50.540 I did watch the game, and it was quite exciting,
00:04:52.780 and Spain's victory was refreshing, absolutely.
00:04:56.680 It was well-deserved. I think they outplayed the Argentines pretty much.
00:05:02.280 They sure did, yeah.
00:05:03.220 Anyway, so Cardi and Trump had a little chat.
00:05:07.060 Then later on, we learned what that was about.
00:05:09.480 It was Trump saying, look, you've got to do something to control these runaway forest fires in Canada.
00:05:15.840 What, 850 of them? Something like that. A crazy amount of forest fires.
00:05:21.520 And of course, just the smoke going into the United States.
00:05:25.360 I'm sure, yeah, I think Americans, generally speaking, like Canada, but that's not going to help our cause, really, the fact that we've allowed this smoke to, you know, billowing clouds of smoke into the United States.
00:05:41.020 Well, first, I think it was good that Carney was in the same booth as Trump so they could talk trade.
00:05:47.900 And I hope they had some trade discussions there.
00:05:49.900 I saw the Mexican prime minister there and their negotiations are well down the road.
00:05:55.220 So I really do hope that he made a positive case for the things that Canada can bring to America, which are many, by the way.
00:06:02.440 Now, on the smoke issue, on the fire issue, it's really perplexing to me.
00:06:06.900 And if I was Carney in that room, I would say, Mr. President, we need your help.
00:06:10.460 We're not sure how these fires started. Could you ask your people to check the satellites to see if they can determine where they started and how they started?
00:06:21.200 I think that would have been a wonderful first volley in terms of discussion about the fires, because the truth is the last couple of seasons of fires have all involved arsonists.
00:06:35.920 so it's very very important to know how the fire started and once you know how it started then you
00:06:41.680 can track down who the perpetrators were maybe this was a terrorist act in which case i think
00:06:47.520 the american response to us would be a whole lot different than uh it seems to have been
00:06:55.760 yeah i mean americans generally are happy to help there was a post by tim sheehy who's the
00:07:03.600 senator from montana talking a little bit of the fact that we're blocked in certain cases and he
00:07:09.680 would know because he was part of the firefighting team that offered to go north to fight some of
00:07:16.160 these fires um in canada and he said that they were blocked from doing so for whatever reason
00:07:23.200 i don't know what's going on there but or whether you even saw that post that's what the senator
00:07:29.280 said. I did see the post. And in fact, that is the case. We generally have no restrictions going
00:07:35.560 into the United States when we help the Americans with airplanes, but we have some strange draconian
00:07:41.140 restrictions when it comes to them coming into Canada. And that to me just doesn't make any
00:07:46.180 sense. When you have an emergency, you welcome your friends with open arms. And I know that
00:07:56.320 But we leased 22 water bombers to the Europeans so that they weren't here for when we needed them. Now, what makes me very suspicious of the fires up north is the fact that over the last little while, there's been a lot of community groups starting up chats, talking about air quality as if they were preparing for this fire.
00:08:22.400 because what the talk of the chats are now is essentially go talk to your politicians about
00:08:29.620 climate change. This is all about climate change. Well, I'm not sure that this has anything to do
00:08:34.680 with climate change. I think this has to do with man-made fires that were the result of the fires
00:08:45.620 from the last three seasons so uh i i have my suspicions around these fires because truly
00:08:54.100 they were timed so perfectly for the world cup weren't they yeah funny how that happened that
00:09:00.340 way i mean there's no doubt that there are radical environmentalists some of whom either have been
00:09:07.060 in the past or still are in the carny cabinet people who are absolutely entrenched in their
00:09:12.980 view that climate change is destroying the planet and yet much of the polling suggests that people
00:09:17.780 are starting to lose their fear of climate change which might explain why people see fit to start
00:09:26.100 these fires in order to whip up more concern you know if the concern doesn't exist well they'll
00:09:31.300 manufacture it by setting the fires themselves i mean that's kind of the way that some of these
00:09:36.340 people operate they are you know being radicals of course well there's there's no question uh
00:09:43.060 and uh if you noticed recently scott besant just uh withdrew funding from a number of vengo groups
00:09:49.540 in the united states because they were involved in radical activities if you recall many years ago
00:09:55.220 um uh pim fortune a dutch politician was assassinated by a former green piecer in
00:10:02.820 uh amsterdam for his uh for his climate opinions which is just uh not tolerable um certainly there
00:10:12.100 is a radical element uh out there uh when it comes to environmentalism uh i believe um had we
00:10:19.660 approached the americans and asked them for help to find out where the fire started and possibly
00:10:25.660 how the fire started given that they have such extraordinary technology i think we wouldn't be
00:10:30.260 talking about penalties today uh so once again i believe the federal government led by mark carney
00:10:40.020 um didn't do his job
00:10:46.660 quite possible yeah and then we have doug ford saying hey wait a minute i don't like some of the
00:10:52.660 lingo coming out of people like john james who's running for governor
00:10:56.180 of Michigan. He was a congressman and big time friend and supporter of Trump's. And John James
00:11:06.560 basically issued a very strong warning directed at Canada saying, no more excuses, stop the smoke.
00:11:14.600 And if you read his posts from last week, he was talking about the responsibility of being a
00:11:20.820 sovereign state and how we had not met that responsibility. And, you know, given all the
00:11:27.760 talk about 51st state, that's the first thing I thought of is, you know, you want to have your
00:11:32.760 own country act like one, essentially, is what I heard Mr. James say. And then you, so what we've
00:11:38.940 got here is a war of words, really, at a time when really, we really don't need it. We're trying to
00:11:44.640 get a trade deal with the Americans. And it's like one more festering wound amidst all of the
00:11:50.280 acrimony that has existed between our two countries. Wouldn't you say?
00:11:54.680 Mark, what a great observation. I'd like to go back to the time when the Americans didn't even
00:12:00.400 think about Canada. They're thinking about Canada too much right now. They're thinking about
00:12:06.040 the smoke that comes from Canada. They're thinking about our obstinance when it comes to
00:12:11.680 negotiating a free trade agreement. They're thinking about our rag the puck approach to
00:12:17.540 uh negotiations when we should be in fact engaging them because remember they're our best customer
00:12:24.260 and uh and um all this while the federal government in canada is spending time on
00:12:32.500 pecune issues like let's make french available for everybody right across the country
00:12:38.180 um because the decline in french is causing concern well how about the decline in the canadian
00:12:45.460 economy that should be their primary concern and their primary concern should be negotiating
00:12:53.220 a good deal for both sides with the canada u.s trade agreement and you mentioned i'm the executive
00:13:00.180 director of the coalition consumer manufacturers and businesses of canada our ceo is catherine
00:13:06.980 swift many of your listeners and viewers know her she has been calling for uh both sides to
00:13:15.060 sit down and start hashing out the deal let's take those venn diagrams and let's put them over
00:13:21.940 each other and let's see where they intersect and let's see where trade works for both countries
00:13:26.740 that's what we need right now we don't need to talk about um uh how we're managing the our
00:13:35.220 environment remember remember this was the responsibility of the former minister of
00:13:40.260 environment uh stephen gilbo who is the next green piecer well why have we had so many forest fires
00:13:47.060 in the last number of years the liberals have been in charge for goodness sakes
00:13:51.220 this shouldn't be a talking point we should be talking about trade and and the truth is
00:13:57.460 the less america talks about canada i think the better off we are but we don't seem to to
00:14:04.180 to feel that way uh and again carney was sold to canadians as the mature candidate in the room who
00:14:13.460 can negotiate with trump well obviously he has failed hugely over the last year and i'm hoping
00:14:20.900 that canadians will see that more clearly uh very very soon well they might see it more clearly if
00:14:27.780 we had a fair media that was reporting and holding the government to account rather than focusing on
00:14:33.140 the leader of the opposition and his failings, you know, you would think that Pierre Polyev
00:14:37.780 was running the country instead of the people who actually are. And on top of all that mess,
00:14:42.820 of course, we had that incident last week in which a 33-year-old woman in New Jersey ended up slapping
00:14:49.120 an American girl, really, on the boardwalk. This would have happened on the July the 4th weekend.
00:14:55.940 And her name is Catherine, or sorry, Caitlin Tracy was the lady's name, and she's in custody.
00:15:04.440 And so there's just a lot of things going on, to your point earlier.
00:15:08.320 And you also mentioned this proposed bill that is under the Heritage Department.
00:15:13.860 This is Mark Miller, you know, the idea that many of these, many of our cities, English-speaking cities, predominantly, not all of them, oddly enough, some key ones are left out.
00:15:23.840 but cities like Yarmouth, you know, Nova Scotia and other cities, which are, you know, heavily
00:15:33.280 English speaking have to somehow, if you're a company that runs, has more than a hundred
00:15:39.220 employees that you have to provide equal services in French, it makes absolutely no sense. But I
00:15:45.960 guess that's the cutoff. So if you're, if you have 200 employees and you think that this is going to
00:15:51.000 hurt you like well we'll just downsize you know we'll we'll fire a hundred people does that make
00:15:56.960 you happy or i mean it's just absolute lunacy in an environment where it's so hard to do business
00:16:04.460 in canada this is another nail in the coffin mark i'd like to ask is maya johnson the chief
00:16:11.060 operating officer for mark car is she bilingual will she be providing bilingual services
00:16:15.720 is spanish speaking i don't know yeah is uh you know uh the the city of toronto in that press
00:16:24.440 release or that article in the paper wasn't mentioned there why is the city of toronto
00:16:29.240 exempt that's interesting is does that have to do with a certain group who has a lot of power
00:16:36.680 who didn't want that obligation on them uh it's quite possible um it it really is uh concerning
00:16:44.760 Because the biggest threat to Canadian wealth is the attack on business right now.
00:16:53.620 And it just seems to be nonstop and endless.
00:16:56.960 Everything they do is designed to injure the economy.
00:17:00.560 That is not by accident.
00:17:02.360 That is by design.
00:17:04.080 And the sooner Canadians realize that, I think the sooner we'll have a solution to this problem.
00:17:08.680 The final issue that we're looking at today is the decision by the Department of Women and Gender Equality.
00:17:15.340 So you would figure if any department would do it, they would definitely do it.
00:17:18.500 They have pulled their X account.
00:17:21.040 So they're off Twitter and they cite hurtful comments online that the managers of this account suffered, I guess, emotional damage of some kind because of some of the criticisms.
00:17:36.260 because you know some of the comments online i mean i've been hit with them myself many times
00:17:41.060 you know they can be pretty cruel and mean but here's our government saying well we're
00:17:46.100 not going to put up with it we're just going to cancel or delete our account
00:17:51.940 it would seem to me media monitoring is a key uh function of that group in that department so what
00:17:58.180 have they outsourced that to the chinese the chinese will tell them what's uh what's on x
00:18:03.300 and the chinese will tell them what other media uh uh statements are being made about them uh is
00:18:08.820 that how they're going to protect themselves it's it's just crazy it doesn't make sense again i
00:18:13.220 think it's just another political action uh designed to uh try and uh put a wedge between
00:18:23.860 uh the the the productive members of society versus the non-productive members of society
00:18:32.300 Yeah, this is disturbing because, I mean, this might just be the first department to do that.
00:18:39.260 They've whined about Twitter in the past because it's a wide open, well, it's much more open than
00:18:44.220 it used to be. So, you know, a lot of people are on X and whether they are liked or not liked,
00:18:51.420 they need to be able to gauge the public's opinion of them. And what better way to do that
00:18:57.520 than be on a platform like X
00:18:59.380 where people, maybe you have unfiltered opinions about them.
00:19:03.300 So the fact that they would be so wounded
00:19:04.980 by some of the comments is kind of lame.
00:19:10.380 And I hope that other departments don't do the same.
00:19:12.700 And yet I wouldn't be surprised if some of them did.
00:19:16.060 Last word to you, my friend.
00:19:17.760 Well, maybe they feel that they have to do it
00:19:20.180 because the money that used to come from USAID
00:19:23.180 to fund third-party NGOs that used to do this
00:19:26.240 is now dried up.
00:19:27.520 and they can't do it. So they've taken this protest in-house, let's say. And I think that
00:19:36.460 may have a lot to do with it. Canada still funds those NGOs. A lot of the money that Canada gives
00:19:43.900 out to Brazil, to Ukraine, to this, to that probably comes back to those NGOs. But in the
00:19:49.280 United States, that funding has dried up and they're having a harder time getting their message
00:19:53.340 out so yeah my advice would be to the government let's focus on a trade agreement let's focus on
00:20:00.620 things that uh get the economy going that get business going that create wealth everything
00:20:08.540 else will work itself out uh as long as we focus on non-productive activity which i think that is
00:20:15.420 mark that you just described uh we are in big trouble yeah i think that's where a lot of the
00:20:23.340 Canadian funds, I agree with you. For instance, heading to Brazil, we saw, I think it was 125
00:20:29.160 million. It was going off the top of my head, this huge chunk of change going for green initiatives
00:20:34.760 or net zero or something like that down in Brazil. And these are all filtered into left-wing causes
00:20:40.780 and groups. And I agree with you. I think it was because USAID money dried up. And so now all of
00:20:46.700 a sudden we've got this Democrat party operative working and running Mark Carney's office. And
00:20:52.880 poof, we're seeing more money shuffled over to these left-wing organizations in order to prop up
00:20:59.660 the Marxist government in Brazil. While, you know, when that money dried up, that USAID money dried
00:21:06.880 up, what did we see? We see a whole bunch of countries south of the border all of a sudden
00:21:11.100 flipped to populist governments, you know? We saw countries like Peru and Ecuador say,
00:21:17.880 yes see you later communists and elect populists and i think a great observation i i i didn't think
00:21:26.360 of it that way but absolutely remember they have uh they have four steps in their program all the
00:21:31.640 time they denormalize they destabilize they create a crisis and then they come in with their own
00:21:37.880 solution to the crisis because the people are so fatigued by the crisis they will accept any
00:21:42.840 solution this is the common modus operandi of the liberal party for the last 11 years
00:21:50.840 yeah and damage as possible and then say okay well we will fix it for you
00:21:56.360 exactly so let's uh let's hope uh canadians recognize that uh very soon and uh get to
00:22:02.920 correct it well i hope so too that's so about thank you so much for coming on the show we
