Summary
Trump has called for an end to birthright citizenship and the idea that just because you are born in a country, you are a citizen of that country. Why should someone born in another country be a citizen just because they were born there?

Few things are more sacred in a country than the integrity of its citizenship and
00:00:04.500
immigration process because if you lose control of those you lose control of a
00:00:08.760
great many other things. Well American President Donald Trump is taking aim in
00:00:13.140
an interview he did with Axios at birthright citizenship. The idea that just
00:00:17.640
because you are born in a country means you are a citizen of that country. Now
00:00:22.960
President Trump has said that he is going to pursue an executive order rather
00:00:27.120
than a constitutional amendment which some people have said is required or
00:00:30.720
even an act of Congress which most people would assume on a major policy item is
00:00:35.400
in fact required. He says that he's run it by a council and he is convinced that he
00:00:40.320
can actually do this by executive order. Now I'm not a fan of governing by
00:00:44.520
executive fiat except when absolutely necessary. However I do think that the
00:00:49.380
idea of putting an end to birthright citizenship is something worth at least
00:00:53.460
entertaining. Certainly not the tyrannical stroke of the pen that so
00:00:57.600
many people are accusing it of being. Quite frankly if someone walks into a
00:01:02.340
country illegally at eight and a half months pregnant and then gives birth to a
00:01:06.420
child why should that child be a citizen when they're only in that country by an
00:01:11.820
illegal act by another. There are a lot of ethical dilemmas that come up when you
00:01:16.080
start talking about deporting children however we also have a very real
00:01:20.580
phenomenon of anchor babies being used in the US to keep illegal immigrants who
00:01:25.260
are parents in the country. And now that Canada has its own problem of illegal
00:01:29.640
immigrants flooding across the border and breaking the law by doing so it stands
00:01:34.380
to reason that this is a loophole that is being exploited here as well. And for
00:01:39.780
starters this is not out of the norm for Trump to say we have to put an end to
00:01:43.800
birthright citizenship. This was a motion that was passed by Conservative Party of
00:01:47.880
Canada members for the Canadian Conservative Party to put forward as a policy. That
00:01:53.160
happened at the last CPC convention in Halifax. Quite frankly few Western developed
00:01:59.460
countries do offer birthright citizenship. Canada and the United States are rarities.
00:02:04.680
But it stands to reason that we should not be rewarding with citizenship which is in
00:02:09.560
fact a tremendously valuable asset for Canada or the US to people who are getting it not
00:02:15.880
accidentally but getting it because they broke the law. And this is where I draw a
00:02:21.760
line. We're not talking about rare cases where someone might be on vacation and a
00:02:25.780
baby comes a little bit early but we do need to address it in the situations where
00:02:30.320
people are deliberately trying to get into the country for the sole purpose of
00:02:34.380
giving birth. Why should citizenship be earned by the child in that case? For the
00:02:57.760
There are times that you make sure you're not interested in living with your
