00:00:00.000 is where I stand what do you say because they'll always bring up what about the
00:00:05.400 11 year old girl that was raped should she be allowed to get an abortion the 0.95
00:00:11.680 11 year old that just her dad incest her yeah so it's a it's a give me like the 0.72
00:00:17.860 worst sob story they'd like give me the the worst sob story we can come up with
00:00:22.520 and that is the example we will give pro-life okay yeah it's yeah I mean you
00:00:26.680 know these these cases as we know are extremely rare but they happen so what
00:00:31.180 I what I often say is you know places like Florida keep statistics on this
00:00:36.860 about why do abortions happen and the number for rape in total is like I think
00:00:43.000 it was 0.14 percent so again you know one about one in 700 I think it was and the
00:00:50.780 number of those that will be for 11 year old children is going to be
00:00:53.740 significantly lower still so it's a it's a very rare situation but it does
00:00:57.240 happen and that 11 year old girl in that situation you know is is a victim is 0.91
00:01:03.460 infinitely valuable and she deserves to have you know the utmost protection and
00:01:07.780 support in that situation so
00:01:11.920 what I would say is first and foremost there's a physical health question which
00:01:17.380 is that if the child literally cannot give birth to you know without significantly
00:01:23.560 impairing their health abortion is always going to be legal so there's there 0.97
00:01:27.640 shouldn't be any worry about the physical health of the child because if
00:01:30.640 her physical health is really significantly threatened abortion will be
00:01:34.320 legal and no one is campaigning to prevent her from being having access to
00:01:37.960 that so the question is fundamentally therefore about the psychological impact
00:01:43.060 now what I think is in the minds often of people who ask this question many
00:01:47.860 people ask it from a good place you know they they really feel sorry for a girl in
00:01:52.420 this situation and think I just can't bring myself to be pro-life in that
00:01:55.680 situation for other people it's like a distraction right it's like let's think
00:01:59.500 of the worst most rare possible situation and use that to argue for abortion for
00:02:03.600 any reason but let's let's assume there's a sincere person asking this there's a
00:02:09.100 there's a concern about her psychological well-being but what we often get into the
00:02:15.520 habit of thinking is if she just has an abortion it solves the problem she 0.91
00:02:20.640 doesn't have to go through this psychologically torturous situation of you
00:02:24.780 know being pregnant and then giving to a birth as an 11 year old child and so on
00:02:27.960 we can just have an abortion and get rid of all of that the problem with that 0.99
00:02:32.580 intuition and that line of thinking is that that's just not reality there is no
00:02:37.620 world in which you can save a girl who has been in this situation from
00:02:42.660 significant mental trauma she has been the victim of incest usually and certainly the 0.99
00:02:47.960 victim of rape at 11 years old there is no solution in the world that is going to
00:02:54.100 just clear that up and make things better so the question is not how can we just
00:02:58.280 eliminate that suffering because that's just crazy and if you tell an 11 year old
00:03:02.000 girl we can get rid of the problem you're lying to her and you're betraying her the 1.00
00:03:07.040 question is what is the solution that is going to give her the least suffering and 0.99
00:03:12.140 that is going to help her the most and when you are frame it that way and you're
00:03:16.860 actually realistic about the alternatives that we can give to a woman or a girl in
00:03:20.980 this horrendous situation it's far less obvious that abortion is the answer as I
00:03:26.860 said we know that abortion has significant mental health problems on
00:03:30.300 average for a woman who chooses it compared to a woman who continues an
00:03:34.140 unwanted pregnancy we know that girls teenagers or even you know preteens who 0.99
00:03:41.100 have abortions are even higher risk for mental health problems as a result of
00:03:45.520 their abortion having an abortion at 14 years old or even earlier is a huge
00:03:51.160 trauma that has significant mental health problems for a girl or a teenager in that
00:03:57.400 situation so all that to say there's no easy way out but actually the evidence
00:04:03.100 suggests that an abortion will make things worse than they already are there's
00:04:08.020 no way we can magically make things better but abortion is going to make things 1.00
00:04:12.000 worse and so yes the woman is going to have this trauma that the girl is going 1.00
00:04:16.980 to have this trauma we have to help her through that we have to seek justice for
00:04:21.360 the perpetrator but we're just lying if we pretend that there's an easy way out
00:04:26.400 that's going to spare her that trauma there isn't think about it this way a
00:04:29.220 woman who is the victim of rape or the victim of incest who doesn't get 0.75
00:04:33.220 pregnant how is she going to feel and what can we do for her well abortion isn't on 0.98
00:04:39.160 the table because she's not pregnant but the woman is the girl the girl is still 1.00
00:04:42.920 experiencing this profound trauma and grief and suffering from what she's been
00:04:47.020 through it's clear when you think about it that way that abortion is not the
00:04:51.760 solution the problem is the rape it's not the pregnancy the problem is the 0.98
00:04:56.260 trauma that she's had because she has been a victim of rape or incest at a very
00:05:00.020 young age in particular and that makes him all the more obvious I think that
00:05:04.720 abortion is not the solution because pregnancy is not the fundamental problem
00:05:08.740 when you finally you know do look at women in this situation and you ask them
00:05:13.120 what what helped there's actually a good book and this is the last thing I'll say
00:05:17.340 because it's very easy to sit here with me as a guy talking who's never been
00:05:21.920 through this never will be through that we never will go through this and think
00:05:24.760 how could he really know how could he possibly know and how could he you know
00:05:27.960 elaborate and pontificate about about what a woman or girl would actually think in this
00:05:35.360 there's a book called victims and victors by an author called a researcher called
00:05:40.220 david ridden which actually asks those women themselves these girls and women who
00:05:44.400 have been the victim of incest or rape and it followed them through and about half
00:05:49.060 of them had an abortion actually less than half of them had an abortion most of
00:05:52.460 them actually kept the baby and so he then asked the women or the girls how
00:05:57.440 do you feel about the abortion how do you feel about keeping the baby now what he
00:06:01.580 found was that when he actually let these women and girls speak for
00:06:04.880 themselves you actually didn't get a clear pro-abortion or pro-choice message
00:06:10.160 yes a lot of them who had abortion said it was the right choice but many of them
00:06:14.260 said it was the wrong choice they said abortion took away the only thing that
00:06:17.820 could have given me healing in that situation they said the one thing that gave me
00:06:22.440 hope or light at the end of the tunnel was that life and abortion took that
00:06:27.300 away the only thing abortion did was it added a second trauma to the victim and
00:06:33.220 it added a second victim to the crime whereas by contrast the women who kept 1.00
00:06:38.280 the baby in that situation every single one said it was the right decision and it
00:06:42.800 was the number one thing that helped me to heal from that trauma so again you know
00:06:47.560 the main thing I say to people on this question is you don't have to listen to me
00:06:51.680 and I get it if you don't want to but listen to the women who have actually
00:06:55.080 experienced that and I guarantee you when you listen to their voices and you
00:06:59.600 don't exploit their stories their answers will actually point much more towards
00:07:04.120 life as part of the solution than it will towards abortion what do you say when
00:07:09.040 they come at you and say but there's so many kids in foster care don't you care
00:07:14.180 about the kids in foster care so so there's a lot of things to say about that the
00:07:18.620 the first is that abortion actually hasn't solved that problem at all when you look
00:07:23.420 at the number of unwanted pregnancies and unwanted children that number has not fallen
00:07:28.700 since abortion was legalized as just one example of this they said you know in the 1960s
00:07:34.020 and 70s if we legalize abortion there'll be no more problem of single motherhood because 1.00
00:07:38.960 they said sorry I know the numbers on this right like anyone knows the number like yeah if you think
00:07:48.460 that single motherhood has been like has fallen since abortion right lies like you're living in a 1.00
00:07:53.860 dream world yeah but it was supposed to be the solution because you know if a woman 1.00
00:07:58.640 gets pregnant out of wedlock right without a without the guy around she can just have an 1.00
00:08:02.880 abortion but we know that it's got way way more of an issue since then those are the supposedly
00:08:10.440 unwanted children that's like a measure of unwanted children at least traditionally and that got far
00:08:15.960 worse of a problem after abortion was legalized and so when you look at the statistics on child abuse
00:08:22.140 children in care all of these things it's very far from obvious that any of them have got better
00:08:27.460 since abortion was legalized now there's a whole load of other things you could say you could point
00:08:32.600 out the fact that it's almost impossible to adopt a newborn baby any baby you know if you're thinking
00:08:40.000 about abortion and you decide to give birth to the baby instead or even if you're forced to give birth
00:08:44.700 to the baby instead that baby will be adopted in a heartbeat there will be 10 couples waiting
00:08:51.540 every single baby in that situation
