00:00:00.000 Birth control ruins women. So I'm going to read a study published in the Proceedings of Royal Society B.
00:00:10.380 Researchers investigated whether the menstrual cycle of women affects the way she perceives the attractiveness of male faces.
00:00:17.680 They found that women's preferences for masculine facial features varied across their menstrual cycles,
00:00:23.000 with women showing a stronger preference for masculine features during the ovulatory phase of their cycle.
00:00:31.300 This study has been replicated in several subsequent studies, which have confirmed the initial findings.
00:00:39.900 The research sheds light on the complex interplay between hormones and mate preference,
00:00:45.000 and provides important insights into how women's attraction to masculine traits can change through their menstrual cycles.
00:00:51.560 Okay, so first question. Have you ever been on birth control?
00:00:57.100 And then for you, it would be, have you ever dated someone on birth control? Start here and go around.
00:01:01.160 Yes.
00:01:01.640 Yes?
00:01:02.320 Yeah.
00:01:02.980 No.
00:01:03.560 No?
00:01:04.120 Yeah. Yeah, I have the implant on my arm right now.
00:01:07.380 Yeah.
00:01:08.220 And did your preference in men change when you were on birth control?
00:01:13.320 I think preference to a lot of things change when you're on birth control. So, yes.
00:01:17.580 Yeah, tell me more. How?
00:01:18.900 Yeah. I think sex drive goes down. I think messing with your hormones is just a negative thing.
00:01:26.160 Okay. And are you still on it or did you end up going off?
00:01:28.500 No. No, I ended up coming off.
00:01:29.680 Okay.
00:01:29.920 I've got two daughters now.
00:01:31.120 Okay. And did you feel better when you came off of it?
00:01:33.460 A hundred percent. Literally about six months after I stopped taking the pill, I felt like I could see that the sky was blue.
00:01:38.700 Really? How long were you on it?
00:01:41.300 Probably about 10 years.
00:01:42.960 You were on it for 10 years?
00:01:44.400 Yeah. So, from being probably 18 or 19 until 30.
00:01:50.520 And I also had the implant as well. I just think any of, they're all basically hormonal. So, they're putting extra hormones into your body. So, it definitely has an effect.
00:02:00.400 Okay. And what was like the number one side effect that you had? Like negative?
00:02:04.580 Yeah. Like just, like sadness. I just think it really.
00:02:10.100 Really? So, it made you depressed?
00:02:12.260 Yeah, I think so. On a level, definitely. I didn't know that when I was on it, but I just remember that day when I remember it sort of clearing from my system and looking at the sky and going, oh, what a beautiful day.
00:02:24.080 Oh, wow. Okay. What about you?
00:02:26.480 I think it's an interesting question. I don't really know. I think I've got the implant. This is my second implant. So, I'd say now I've been on the implant four or five years now. And I would say on my menstrual cycle, my emotions and stuff either heighten or decrease. But I feel like maybe the implant has over heightened or decreased it a lot.
00:02:49.700 So, you feel like you're more emotional on birth control?
00:02:52.020 Maybe slightly, but I feel like I've kind of always been that way anyway on my menstrual cycle. So, I don't feel like it's affected me emotionally as such. But I think physically, I'd say my menstrual cycle has kind of just been a bit more inconsistent or had like a consistent pattern that I don't like. But I wouldn't say emotionally. It's like affected me as a woman.
00:03:12.940 Okay. So, before, if you had a friend that knew you before you were on birth control and after, she would say you're the same?
00:03:18.500 Yeah. People don't even really know that I'm even on birth control.
00:03:22.020 Okay. What about you? You said you've never been on it?
00:03:25.740 I just feel like, you know, when people like you ask people about birth control and stuff, like they never have anything good to say. Like, obviously, there's the benefit that it stops you from getting pregnant and stuff like that. Cool.
00:03:37.820 But when you ask people, there seems to be more like cons than there are pros. So, it kind of just puts me off. Like, obviously, I'm young. So, I don't have as many years to try things and stuff that I have had. But, you know, it just doesn't appeal to me like at all.
00:03:52.700 Have any of your friends taken it?
00:03:54.280 Yeah. Some of my friends have been on it. But it's the same thing. Like, they just, every day they're complaining. Like, how they feel depressed and stuff. Like, you know, all the side effects that just come with it. Like, I just wouldn't want to put myself in that position.
00:04:06.780 And have you noticed, outside of them just like saying that, have you noticed them acting different, being on it?
00:04:12.220 Like, I feel like with my friends that were more outgoing before, like, now they've been on it. They more like, they want to stay at home and stuff like that. Like, their social status, like, it changes. And I just feel like for me personally, like, I'm young. I don't want to feel like I don't want to go out and live my life just because I'm on the pill. Like, I want to go out and I want to have fun and stuff. Like, you can be safe. But, you know, there's other ways to do it.
00:04:34.420 What about you?
00:04:36.920 Yeah, I've been on birth control. I think for me, like, I think it makes me more emotional at times. And sometimes I'm like, I'm this really outgoing person. I feel like sometimes it just makes me feel like, oh, second guessing myself at times. I think that's like the biggest effect I've seen it have on me. But otherwise, fine.
00:05:00.100 So it's been minimal side effects, it sounds like. Do you know anyone that's had major side effects from birth control?
00:05:06.540 I mean, I've had some friends who've had, like, major weight gain, and it's taken them a couple of years to get it off. And other side effects, I think mainly for them, it's the mood swings. You know, they're just not themselves or just probably a little bit more angry at times. Yeah, mainly.
00:05:25.560 And are you still on it?
00:05:27.780 Yeah.
00:05:28.100 Okay.
00:05:28.600 Yeah.
00:05:29.400 What about you?
00:05:30.940 I'm on birth control. I've never really had any issue with it. I was on the pill from when I was, like, 18 to 21, came off for a few years. And then when I was 25 now, I went on the implant and never had a problem.
00:05:42.480 Also, on the topic of weight gain, I've heard that, like, there's actually no studies to say that there is any link whatsoever between birth control and weight gain. But sometimes they think that women see that correlation because they tend to start taking birth control, like, when they go to university, which tends to be when you gain weight anyway.
00:05:58.680 I've had that thought before. I've always wondered if, because people start drinking a lot at university.
00:06:05.320 Yeah, it's because, like, there is a correlation between starting university and gaining weight, but not actually between birth control and gaining weight.
00:06:11.500 There's this thing where, because you have more hormones, it enhances your female assets. And it's not the fact that it makes you gain weight because you're on birth control, but it creates more of a hunger for food.
00:06:28.960 And so that's where the weight gain comes in, is that you're feeling like you want to eat more, probably, like, sweet stuff or your favorite kind of meals.
00:06:38.020 And that's where the weight gain comes in, rather than because you're on it for a long time that you're just putting on weight.
00:06:44.340 Yeah, I get that from, like, an empirical point of view, from, like, your own experience.
00:06:47.820 But I don't think there's actually any studies to back it up from what I've read myself about the birth control, because that was one of the things.
00:06:53.980 When I was, like, 18, I went on it. I was like, oh, my God, it's going to make me fat because then I was skinny.
00:06:57.280 But, like, apparently there are actually no studies to back it up or there weren't when I was 18 anyway.
00:07:02.160 Well, for the one I've done, it's in the aspect of it increases your hunger.
00:07:08.300 So it changes the foods that you eat.
00:07:09.680 I've heard that, that it makes you more hungry.
00:07:12.000 Yeah.
00:07:13.200 I don't know if it's true.
00:07:14.020 Like, from that, because, I mean, like, you speak to the nurse and you're like, okay, I'm gaining weight.
00:07:18.840 And then when I did research, it's because it enhances, like, your food habits.
00:07:22.780 Or it's not like you're just putting it on, but you're eating the things that, for example, like, when you're PMSing, you'd probably want a chocolate.
00:07:30.680 Or women tend to eat, like, their favorite foods at that time of the month.
00:07:35.280 And I think that's, like, a big increase, basically.
00:07:39.560 Have you ever dated someone that's on birth control?
00:07:42.460 Yeah.
00:07:42.900 My missus, so we're coming up to, it'll be like two years now.
00:07:46.980 For the first year, she was on birth control.
00:07:49.560 Not anymore.
00:07:50.580 And did you notice a difference in her behavior?
00:07:54.700 No.
00:07:55.960 But then, to be fair, to be fair, she, that's the reason why she came up, right?
00:08:00.040 Because she did say that, you know, she just was like herself when she was on it.
00:08:03.860 And it does affect her mood swings big time.
00:08:06.000 So I just kind of had to take that on and just say fair enough.
00:08:08.400 Okay.
