00:00:30.000 Free will
00:00:32.000 and Christian doctrine.
00:00:34.000 How do we reconcile
00:00:36.000 these two concepts?
00:00:38.000 You know, one
00:00:40.000 statement you'll often hear from
00:00:42.000 atheists is
00:00:44.000 why would God have given Adam
00:00:46.000 and Eve free will if it allowed
00:00:48.000 them to sin and
00:00:50.000 create a fallen world?
00:00:52.000 And
00:00:54.000 implicit in that is also the question
00:00:56.000 how is it that you can be said
00:00:58.000 to have free will if
00:01:00.000 you are following
00:01:02.000 the commandments of God?
00:01:06.000 You know, on the surface it seems like
00:01:08.000 if you're doing what God likes then
00:01:10.000 can you really be said to have free
00:01:12.000 will? And I think a
00:01:14.000 good metaphor for this to
00:01:16.000 illustrate how it is that
00:01:18.000 you can be free and
00:01:20.000 do what you're supposed to in life
00:01:22.000 is the idea
00:01:24.000 of a symphony.
00:01:26.000 When you have
00:01:28.000 a number of musicians in a symphony
00:01:30.000 they are all coordinated
00:01:32.000 they're all working together
00:01:34.000 to create a piece of art
00:01:36.000 to create beauty.
00:01:38.000 Now, every single one
00:01:40.000 of those musicians is free.
00:01:42.000 You know, if they want to start
00:01:43.000 playing their own music
00:01:44.000 if they want to just
00:01:46.000 make a bunch of noise
00:01:47.000 they can do that at any point.
00:01:49.000 But if they
00:01:51.000 don't follow the conductor
00:01:53.000 if they don't follow the sheet music
00:01:55.000 all you get is a cacophony.
00:01:57.000 And yet all of these people
00:01:59.000 out of their individual free
00:02:01.000 will choose to follow
00:02:03.000 the music, they choose to obey
00:02:05.000 the conductor.
00:02:07.000 And the result is
00:02:09.000 harmony and beauty.
00:02:11.000 And I believe that's
00:02:13.000 what it means to follow
00:02:15.000 God's will.
00:02:17.000 God doesn't want
00:02:19.000 a universe of
00:02:21.000 any more than you want to go
00:02:23.000 listen to a guy program
00:02:25.000 a computer to play the exact music
00:02:27.000 that he wants.
00:02:29.000 Seeing an actual orchestra
00:02:31.000 is just so much more of a powerful
00:02:33.000 experience than just listening
00:02:35.000 to pre-programmed music.
00:02:37.000 Even though theoretically
00:02:38.000 the pre-programmed music
00:02:39.000 could be better quality.
00:02:41.000 the reality is
00:02:43.000 that when you have
00:02:45.000 free individuals
00:02:46.000 masters of their craft
00:02:47.000 playing instruments
00:02:49.000 it absolutely surpasses
00:02:51.000 the best quality
00:02:53.000 synthesizer.
00:02:54.000 Because
00:02:55.000 there's soul going into it.
00:02:57.000 And I believe that's
00:02:59.000 what God wanted
00:03:00.000 when he created a world
00:03:02.000 full of individuals
00:03:03.000 with free will.
00:03:04.000 Not that we should
00:03:06.000 have the freedom to choose
00:03:07.000 to make a cacophony
00:03:09.000 although we do have
00:03:10.000 that freedom.
00:03:11.000 But that if we
00:03:12.000 chose to follow
00:03:13.000 what is good
00:03:14.000 true
00:03:15.000 and beautiful
00:03:16.000 each of us
00:03:17.000 as individuals
00:03:18.000 as unique people
00:03:20.000 doing
00:03:21.000 our own
00:03:22.000 sort of thing.
00:03:23.000 Working together
00:03:25.000 to create
00:03:26.000 a truly
00:03:27.000 beautiful
00:03:28.000 amazing
00:03:29.000 and creative reality.
00:03:30.000 that one person
00:03:31.000 on their own
00:03:32.000 one
00:03:33.000 consciousness
00:03:34.000 on their own
00:03:35.000 simply cannot do.
00:03:36.000 You know,
00:03:38.000 God doesn't want
00:03:39.000 a world of automatons.
00:03:40.000 He doesn't want
00:03:41.000 a Soviet state
00:03:43.000 where we're interchangeable cocks.
00:03:45.000 But one where we realize
00:03:46.000 our true individuality
00:03:48.000 our true freedom
00:03:49.000 and become the best versions
00:03:51.000 of ourself.
00:03:52.000 So that's
00:03:54.000 that is
00:03:55.000 that is
00:03:56.000 how I would describe
00:03:57.000 free will
00:03:58.000 and how it does
00:03:59.000 fit with the creator
00:04:00.000 who has a plan
00:04:01.000 for all of us.
00:04:22.000 you know,
00:04:23.000 you know,
00:04:24.000 it's not a
00:04:41.000 that's
00:04:42.000 that's
00:04:43.000 that's
00:04:44.000 that's
00:04:46.000 that's
00:04:47.000 that's
00:04:48.000 that's
00:04:49.000 that's
