00:00:49.700 If you don't already know, this is our Friday Field Notes show, guys, released each and every Friday,
00:00:53.700 hence the Friday Field Notes.
00:00:54.960 But, we also have a Tuesday show.
00:00:57.120 This is a full interview show.
00:00:58.600 Last week, we interviewed entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author, Grant Cardone.
00:01:03.920 And then next week, I'm excited about this, we release my interview with the one and only
00:01:07.880 Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman.
00:01:10.160 He is the author of On Killing and On Combat.
00:01:13.520 So, with that said, what you need to do right after you listen to this episode
00:01:16.720 is subscribe to this podcast and leave us a review so you never miss a single episode.
00:01:21.380 We have over 100 episodes strong now, and we are just scratching the surface.
00:01:25.840 Now, let's get into this conversation today.
00:01:27.280 I only have about 7 or 10 minutes each Friday, so we've got to get going quick on these things.
00:01:30.860 Today, I want to talk with you about one of my favorite quotes,
00:01:34.180 and I think a lot of you will relate with this as well.
00:01:36.460 The quote is,
00:01:37.220 It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.
00:01:41.100 It has been attributed to a lot of different people, and most of the author is unknown,
00:01:44.440 but no matter, it's a great quote.
00:01:46.160 And it highlights one of the core roles of manliness and masculinity, and that is that
00:01:50.980 of being a protector.
00:01:53.100 It's fascinated me, but over the past couple of weeks, I have received quite a few messages
00:01:56.740 and responses from people on our social media channels suggesting that not every man needs
00:02:02.680 to know how to shoot a gun, or that not every man needs to learn how to throw a punch, or
00:02:07.260 any number of skills I believe every man should be at least somewhat familiar with.
00:02:13.000 Now, I'm not suggesting that every man become an expert at these skills, but he should at
00:02:17.360 least know how to defend himself and those he cares about, and that's what I want to talk
00:02:21.940 with you about today, how we can do a better job of this.
00:02:24.440 Now, to address my critics who suggest that not all men are warriors, I understand.
00:02:29.260 I understand that we have lovers and not fighters.
00:02:32.260 I understand that we have educators and artists.
00:02:35.200 I understand that we have those who oppose violence, and I also understand that there's a lot
00:02:39.840 of men and women who are living in delusion about the way things really work in this world.
00:02:46.040 So here's what each and every one of us needs to wrap our head around.
00:02:49.060 Why does this conversation have to be an or type conversation?
00:02:52.800 Why is it that you are a lover or a fighter?
00:02:56.080 Why is it that you have to be an educator or artist or a soldier or a warrior?
00:03:01.200 Is it possible for men to actually be both?
00:03:04.140 This is why I love this quote so much.
00:03:05.700 You can be soft, you can be weak, but when the battle comes to your front door, you'll
00:03:10.760 get destroyed, or someone you love will.
00:03:13.540 Or you can be gentle and kind and compassionate and caring, and if the wolf comes knocking at
00:03:18.620 your door, you can stomp his face in.
00:03:20.260 That's what I want everybody to understand.
00:03:22.240 As men, we should be warriors in a garden.
00:03:25.240 Warriors pursuing what we love and what we enjoy, but prepared to go to battle on a moment's
00:03:31.640 notice when the situation actually calls for it.
00:03:34.060 So now that you understand where I'm coming from in this, I want to give you some insight
00:03:37.320 into some areas that you need to be prepared so you can be a ready warrior.
00:03:41.900 The first area is physical fitness.
00:03:43.280 Guys, this is huge.
00:03:44.100 If you've been sitting on the couch for years with a bag of potato chips in your hand, you're
00:03:47.580 asking for trouble.
00:03:48.880 I know what this is like.
00:03:50.340 I know exactly what it's like.
00:03:51.460 I'd come home from work, and my kids would jump on my legs.
00:03:54.100 They'd ask me to play with them, and I literally could not do it.
00:03:56.960 I was too out of shape.
00:03:57.880 I was too overweight.
00:03:58.500 I didn't have the conditioning or the strength to continue throughout my workday into my family
00:04:03.320 time.
00:04:03.980 You need to get your body in shape.
00:04:05.540 If you have any hope of being the protector that you are called to be as a man, fitness,
00:04:09.720 nutrition, sleep, everything that will make your body healthy.
00:04:13.240 I'm not going to get into all the details, but you can go check out the podcast that we
00:04:17.440 did with New York Times bestselling author Drew Manning about how to get your butt in gear.
00:04:21.540 That's what I want to do today.
00:04:22.380 I want to just give you some additional resources to check this stuff out.
00:04:24.960 So that interview with Drew is at orderofman.com slash 053.
00:04:29.100 Now, the next thing I want to make mention of is situational awareness.
00:04:32.680 We just did a Friday Field Notes on this.
00:04:34.100 I'll give you the link in a second.
00:04:35.540 But guys, there are too many men stuck with their noses in their phones, and they have
00:04:40.680 absolutely no idea about what is going on around them.
00:04:44.080 In fact, you may have seen people run into cars and telephone poles because they're not
00:04:49.540 watching where they're going.
00:04:50.480 It's funny.
00:04:51.580 I laugh.
00:04:52.200 But it's also pathetic.
00:04:54.060 You need to get your nose out of your phone and get clear about what is going on around
00:04:58.300 you at any given time.
00:04:59.760 Where are the exits?
00:05:00.900 Are people acting strange or out of place?
00:05:03.260 What is the general mood of the environment?
00:05:05.760 There's a ton more to consider when it comes to situational awareness.
00:05:08.900 And I told you we just recorded a Friday Field Notes about that.
00:05:11.280 You can find that one at orderofman.com slash FFN.
00:05:14.740 So Friday Field Notes.
00:05:15.660 So orderofman.com slash FFN020.
00:05:19.660 Now the next thing I want to talk about is self-defense.
00:05:22.640 Once you have this physical fitness thing under control and you learn how to become aware of
00:05:27.240 your surroundings and the situations in which you find yourself, it's a good idea to learn
00:05:31.460 how to defend yourself using your fists and using your body.
00:05:35.100 So becoming stronger and more conditioned and improving your situational awareness, those
00:05:39.300 are great first steps, but they won't always keep you from finding yourself in an altercation.
00:05:44.380 So whether you're interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga, or any other form of
00:05:50.680 martial arts, the ability to turn your body into a defensive and offensive weapon is important.
00:05:56.720 So you need to probably check out my interview with Rodney King at orderofman.com slash 048
00:06:02.220 to learn a bit more.
00:06:03.580 Or you can even check out my interview with former heavyweight UFC champion Boss Rutin.
00:06:08.400 And that one's at orderofman.com slash 018.
00:06:11.620 And you can get some more information on this.
00:06:13.240 That's a great starting point.
00:06:14.780 Now, the last thing and the next thing I want to talk about is firearms.
00:06:17.200 This is the one that seems to get most people fired up more so than anything else.
00:06:22.040 But I think learning how to use a firearm is a critical skill that every man should learn
00:06:27.680 to develop, at least to some degree.
00:06:29.260 Now, I understand that you may not like guns.
00:06:31.580 I understand that you may not want to carry one around.
00:06:33.920 I understand that you might be even a little scared of them because you don't know how they
00:06:37.600 work.
00:06:37.860 But the reality is that at some point you may find yourself staring down the barrel of one.
00:06:43.240 Or finding yourself holding one.
00:06:45.060 So, I think it would probably be a good idea that you know how to operate it.
00:06:48.980 You should know the four firearm safety rules.
00:06:51.400 You should know how they work.
00:06:52.560 You should have some experience with firing one.
00:06:55.040 And you should practice using a firearm.
00:06:57.400 And to give you just another great resource on firearms, I just had an amazing conversation
00:07:01.660 with former Army Ranger Neil Curry with Ready Gunner.
00:07:04.740 And that one can be found at orderofman.com slash 080.
00:07:07.920 So, there you have it, guys.
00:07:09.440 A couple of quick and easy skills that you should be developing to turn yourself into
00:07:12.940 that warrior in the garden.
00:07:15.220 So, we have physical fitness.
00:07:16.580 We have situational awareness.
00:07:17.980 We have self-defense.
00:07:19.260 And then we have firearms training.
00:07:21.320 It's my hope that you never have to use these skills in a life-threatening type situation.
00:07:25.540 It's my hope that situational awareness alone will keep you out of harm's way.
00:07:29.620 It's my hope that you won't find yourself confronted with violence and hate and aggression.
00:07:34.060 But as I've said before, a man's job is to protect and he cannot fulfill that role while
00:07:39.280 playing the quote-unquote gardener in the war.
00:07:41.980 He has to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
00:07:45.480 That's all I have for you guys today.

00:08:09.500 Dave Grossman.
00:08:10.300 But until then, take action and become the man you were meant to be.
