Summary

The role of a man is to protect, provide, and preside. This goes back thousands of years and hasn't changed much since then. The question is, can a man handle it? Can he handle it well?

00:00:00.000 You're a man. You're committed to the work required to forge your own destiny.
00:00:04.600 Your blood. Your sweat. Your tears.
00:00:07.920 You will not be defeated. You cannot be deterred.
00:00:11.480 Nothing stands between you and the victory you seek.
00:00:14.640 You're a rock. Steadfast, resolute, and unwavering.
00:00:18.420 And, at the end of the day, the job will be done.
00:00:22.480 Welcome to your Friday Field Notes.
00:00:25.400 Men, welcome back to your Friday Field Notes.
00:00:28.120 Now, this is only the second time we've done the Friday Field Notes,
00:00:31.020 but last week I got some great feedback, so obviously something's working.
00:00:34.540 We'll continue.
00:00:35.520 Now, my job on this show, this is a short show.
00:00:37.780 We do the full show every Tuesday, but the Friday Field Notes, obviously, on Friday.
00:00:42.120 And my goal is to make you think.
00:00:43.420 The last thing I want for you is to follow me or anyone else blindly.
00:00:47.900 I think a real man is somebody who can think for himself.
00:00:50.700 He discerns what information to implement, and then he takes action based on his own decisions.
00:00:55.120 Now, with that said, and since this is a short show each Friday, I just want to jump right into this.
00:01:01.240 I've had a lot of people ask me what it means to be a man and what separates men from women.
00:01:05.780 And there's the obvious, but I'm not going to get into that today.
00:01:08.140 You can figure out that one for yourself.
00:01:09.700 What I want to talk about today is the way in which we, as men, go about our lives.
00:01:14.900 In this case, I want to talk with you about the responsibilities of men.
00:01:18.580 And these responsibilities, they go back thousands and thousands of years.
00:01:21.220 It hasn't changed, and I don't anticipate the responsibilities will change anytime soon.
00:01:25.460 Now, the way in which we approach our responsibilities may have changed, but not the underlying duties
00:01:30.540 themselves.
00:01:31.700 And the reason I want to talk with you about this is because I see more and more men every
00:01:35.820 single day shirking their responsibilities.
00:01:38.000 There's a ton of guys out there who are absolutely doing what they need to do as men.
00:01:43.280 And then on the flip side, there's a ton of guys out there who are doing the exact opposite
00:01:47.240 of what they actually should be doing.
00:01:49.900 So with that said, what is it that a man needs to be doing?
00:01:54.360 I'll tell you this.
00:01:55.020 A man's primary responsibility is to protect, to provide, and preside.
00:02:01.240 That's it.
00:02:02.320 So today, I want to break down each one of those.
00:02:04.380 Protect, provide, preside.
00:02:06.100 And I want to break them down briefly for you because your ability to understand what
00:02:10.460 I'm talking about and then carry out the responsibilities that we're going to discuss today is your ultimate
00:02:16.400 measure as a man.
00:02:18.100 So first, protect.
00:02:19.300 This is the reason that you and me, that men are built the way that we're built.
00:02:23.760 Generally speaking, men are bigger.
00:02:25.840 They're stronger than women.
00:02:27.040 And that's all for a reason because our job is to protect our loved ones.
00:02:31.620 And when shit really hits the fan, people are going to look to the man.
00:02:36.540 When an intruder breaks into your house, your wife is going to tell you to check it out.
00:02:40.420 When there's a spider running around the house, it's your job to kill it.
00:02:43.280 When there's a natural disaster or, more recently, active shooter-type situations, it's the man's
00:02:49.600 responsibility to put an end to it.
00:02:51.940 This is your job, fellas.
00:02:53.100 And the question is, can you handle it?
00:02:54.820 Can you defend yourself?
00:02:56.100 Are you physically fit?
00:02:57.460 Are you trained with a weapon?
00:02:58.920 Can you think rationally about an emergency situation?
00:03:02.100 Can you keep your cool and can you keep collected when everything else is chaos all around you?
00:03:08.820 If not, if the answer is no to those questions, then I question your ability to lead as a man.
00:03:13.420 Now, if you have some room to grow in this area, great.
00:03:15.660 Do it.
00:03:16.380 This is what you're supposed to do.
00:03:17.740 Now, I hear a lot of people that will say, well, all men aren't warriors.
00:03:20.580 And that's true.
00:03:21.940 I'm not suggesting that you have to be a warrior to protect everything you care about.
00:03:25.200 I'm not asking you to conquer nations.
00:03:26.560 I'm telling you that you need to be able to protect your domain.
00:03:30.460 So you don't have to be a warrior to do that.
00:03:32.840 But you do need to get good and proficient at certain skills.
00:03:36.980 So remember, protection.
00:03:38.520 Next, provide.
00:03:39.860 Again, spanning back thousands of years, men's primary responsibility was to provide.
00:03:43.860 Now, thousands of years ago, it may have been a fresh kill or a cave to dwell in
00:03:48.620 and a big enough leaf or something like that to cover ourselves.
00:03:51.560 But today, it's very much the same.
00:03:52.780 Food on the table, a place to live, clothes on her back.
00:03:54.920 And if you're not providing those things for yourself and your loved ones,
00:03:58.900 is there really a reason to have you around?
00:04:01.660 Now, I know more and more women are entering the workforce.
00:04:04.040 And to that, I say, great.
00:04:05.060 I have no problem with that.
00:04:06.180 I think that's a wonderful thing.
00:04:07.700 And if you happen to be in a relationship where the wife maybe goes out to work
00:04:11.140 and you stay at home, that's great too.
00:04:13.180 Because this concept of providing goes well beyond just the physical contributions
00:04:16.860 that you bring into the household.
00:04:18.040 But are you providing mental and emotional support for your family?
00:04:21.880 You guys are the rock.
00:04:23.420 You're the foundation in which your family needs to build upon.
00:04:26.840 So provide.
00:04:28.100 Providing for your family, your business, your community, your loved ones.
00:04:31.360 The third P I want to talk about is preside.
00:04:33.660 I'm talking about leadership here.
00:04:35.000 It's your job.
00:04:35.720 It always has been to lead your family, your business, and your community.
00:04:39.500 Again, I think I might have some hate on this one because women will tell me,
00:04:43.160 well, they can lead too.
00:04:44.320 That is true.
00:04:45.220 Of course they can.
00:04:45.980 Women can lead and quite effectively.
00:04:48.520 There are women out there who I've been led by who are completely capable of handling
00:04:52.360 the task at hand.
00:04:53.760 But a woman is not expected to do that the same way that a man is.
00:04:58.080 That's what I'm talking about here.
00:04:59.500 Typically speaking, you as a man are going to be looked upon as a leader.
00:05:04.460 How are we going to raise our family?
00:05:06.000 What direction is the business going to go?
00:05:08.040 What's best for the community as a whole?
00:05:09.620 And your ability to lead effectively literally spells the difference between success and
00:05:14.420 failure in your family and your business and your community.
00:05:16.900 One great resource that I encourage you to check out is the book Extreme Ownership by Jocko
00:05:22.940 Willink and Leif Babin.
00:05:24.180 In fact, I'm going to be releasing my podcast interview that I'm excited.
00:05:27.080 I'm stoked about with Jocko Willink next Tuesday.
00:05:30.140 So make sure you tune into that.
00:05:31.460 Again, I want to be clear here.
00:05:32.560 Women do have the ability to do all the things I talked about.
00:05:35.860 Provide, protect, and preside.
00:05:37.320 But at the end of the day, you as a man are going to be expected to bring home the bacon.
00:05:43.000 You're the one who's expected to keep everybody safe.
00:05:45.440 You're the one who's expected to lead people to the promised land.
00:05:48.640 Maybe you have the ability to do that and maybe you don't.
00:05:50.920 Either way, all of us men could step up to the task a little bit better.
00:05:54.360 And that's what the world needs from us.
00:05:56.000 Protect, provide, and preside.
00:05:58.980 Now, if you guys want to learn more about how to do this, go to our website.
00:06:01.860 Go to orderofman.com slash fieldnotes.
00:06:03.960 Dig around the site a little bit.

00:06:12.920 This is where we talk about all of this stuff and so much more and actually how to implement
00:06:16.660 it in your life, which is the most important part.
00:06:19.420 So with that said, remember again, guys, next week, tune in to my conversation with literally
00:06:23.960 one of the baddest men on the planet.

00:06:30.340 He's also a New York Times bestselling author of Extreme Ownership.
00:06:33.680 His name is Jocko Willink.
00:06:35.440 You're going to want to tune in for that.
00:06:36.840 Catch you next week, guys.
00:06:37.760 But until then, remember, it is our job to protect, provide, and preside for the ones
00:06:43.440 that we care about.
00:06:44.980 Those are your Friday Field Notes.
00:06:46.940 Now, it's time to crush your excuses.
00:06:49.340 Own your choices.
