00:00:00.000 Most men don't have a fitness problem as much as they have a no problem.
00:00:04.880 Your kid asks you to jump on the trampoline or to wrestle, go for a hike, and maybe you're too tired or too out of shape or too worried about getting hurt to say yes.
00:00:15.500 And if you say no enough times, kids will just stop asking.
00:00:19.180 My guest today knows that if you want to protect, provide, and show up for the people who count on you, being physically capable is the price of admission.
00:00:28.260 Jason Kalipa and I talk about learning new skills well past 40,
00:00:32.900 why tools like TRT and GLPs should never become crutches,
00:00:38.160 and what it means to stay ahead of your sons in the weight room for as long as you can.
00:00:43.340 We also get into the Train Hard Men's Club,
00:00:45.720 a free weekly workout group that Jason started in a library parking lot
00:00:50.860 that have grown to more than 100 clubs around the world.
00:00:54.380 Men need a reason to get together.
00:00:55.980 and a hard workout followed by maybe a cup of coffee and a hangout
00:00:59.740 might be exactly the excuse that you've been missing.
00:01:03.940 You're a man of action.
00:01:05.280 You live life to the fullest.
00:01:06.720 Embrace your fears and boldly chart your own path.
00:01:09.660 When life knocks you down, you get back up one more time.
00:01:13.000 Every time.
00:01:14.120 You are not easily deterred or defeated.
00:01:16.420 Rugged.
00:01:17.200 Resilient.
00:01:18.160 Strong.
00:01:19.160 This is your life.
00:01:20.260 This is who you are.
00:01:21.680 This is who you will become at the end of the day
00:01:24.260 and after all is said and done, you can call yourself a man.
00:01:28.940 Gentlemen, welcome to the Order Man podcast. I am your host and the founder, Ryan Mickler.
00:01:33.400 Thank you for tuning in today. I've got a really good one lined up with a former CrossFit Games
00:01:39.120 champion, a good friend of mine, and somebody who is getting after it in all aspects of life.
00:01:45.380 I'm going to introduce him to you in a minute. Before I do, just want to mention also people
00:01:50.840 getting after it in life are my good friends out at montana knife company several months ago i had
00:01:57.340 the opportunity to tour their new 50 000 square foot facility and i can tell you it is absolutely
00:02:03.300 stunning it's amazing the technology the technicians the the process of manufacturing
00:02:11.000 knives in america is incredible and i can tell you with 100 certainty because i've seen their
00:02:18.480 facilities. I've seen what they do, but more importantly, I've been using their knives for,
00:02:23.400 I want to say six or seven years now, five, six, seven years, somewhere in there,
00:02:28.980 from hunts to in the kitchen, to my everyday carry. I always seem to have a Montana knife
00:02:35.880 company knife around on my person in my backpack. You name it, I've got it. You should have one too.
00:02:41.960 So if you go to montananifecompany.com, find the knife you want, use the code order of man at
00:02:47.840 checkout. I was just sharpening my knives for a couple of hunts that I have coming up. So very
00:02:54.180 excited to get on those hunts and put the blade to use. Again, Montana knife company.com use the
00:02:59.640 code order of man. All right, let me introduce you to my guest. His name is Jason Kalipa. Like I said,
00:03:05.580 a former CrossFit games champion, a lifelong coach and an entrepreneur who has owned and operated
00:03:11.700 brick and mortar gyms for nearly two decades. He's also the founder of train hard, which is an
00:03:17.460 online training community built primarily for men but at 41 he refuses refuses to stop learning
00:03:24.200 he earned his black belt in brazilian jiu-jitsu completed the police academy is a post-certified
00:03:31.020 firearms instructor in california and competes in tactical shooting events in partnership with
00:03:36.620 smith and wesson three years ago jason started hosting free saturday morning workouts for men
00:03:42.000 in a parking lot in los gatos california and that one group now draws around 100 men a week and has
00:03:50.060 grown into the train hard men's club with more than 100 clubs offering free workouts in parks
00:03:56.640 and parking lots worldwide his goal is to get millions of men moving connecting and walking
00:04:03.240 back in their front doors as better husbands and fathers jason is a father of two and you can find
00:04:08.500 a club near you or start your own at th as in train hard th.fit enjoy this one gents
00:04:14.760 tell me about smith and wesson so i um you know i got really interested in um obviously crossfit
00:04:23.180 years ago and then i i kind of then i became really interested in jiu-jitsu and so then i
00:04:29.260 had you know but over the years i've donated my time a lot with law enforcement and so i became
00:04:35.260 interested also in firearms and in particular like the tactical games and high heart rate shooting
00:04:40.460 and fitness and shooting combined that was really interesting to me because the accuracy changes so
00:04:46.000 much when your heart rate spikes right so yeah it's anyways i got it well yeah and so i got
00:04:52.500 interested in it i competed at tactical games i've competed in a uspsa match i'm i'm a firearms
00:04:58.320 instructor uh post certified for california and i started working with smith and weston because
00:05:03.280 they make awesome firearms they're super cool people and and i was looking for a partner that
00:05:09.560 i could use to um to you know compete with their guns and so yeah they've been great i just got
00:05:14.640 the phone with them so they're awesome and actually on top of that hopefully i'm going on my first
00:05:20.480 ever like real hunt with them which should be interesting wait have you never hunted before
00:05:25.200 so i've i mean this is going to sound really i have gone i've done duck hunting i've done
00:05:31.780 pheasant hunting i've never done real animal like like processing so what my goal is is i want ducks
00:05:40.240 and pheasants are real animals so yeah they're really but like you know like i want to go and
00:05:45.900 and sure like bigger game right like deer and and and actually learn how to uh process the meat
00:05:53.340 more you know the duck was fine it was what it is what it is but i'm just saying like i've never
00:05:57.620 experienced that type of of hunting where so okay so you're gonna go with smith and wesson
00:06:03.240 this fall or where are you going i'm supposed to be going to texas in december and yes and i'm i
00:06:10.480 guess it's for whitetail and and as the story goes and like something that's really authentic to me
00:06:14.880 is like i'm really curious i've eaten i've eaten meat my entire life and i do not know do i do not
00:06:22.220 have the skill to process that meat. And that's something I desire to learn. And so they're going
00:06:29.900 to help me do it. I mean, breaking down an animal is so fascinating to me. I might be one of the
00:06:38.080 weirdos. Maybe I'm like Dexter or I don't know, some serial killer or whatever. But the first
00:06:45.160 time I ever, so my first hunt actually for big game was in Texas. I was in Abilene and I don't
00:06:52.100 know where you're going but uh yeah the first day I went out and hunted I shot a really cool
00:06:59.260 whitetail we call him crab claw just a fascinating deer I mean old mature but had these weird
00:07:06.060 genetics with his antlers so I shot him at 75 yards and then two or three days later with a
00:07:12.000 friend called Colin Cottrell uh I shot so I shot the first one with a rifle and the second one I 0.97
00:07:17.700 shot with a bow. Oh yeah. And then we started breaking down the deer and seeing their muscles 0.94
00:07:23.200 and their lungs and their heart and their liver and their internal organs and how the muscles
00:07:28.420 worked in the diaphragm, bro. It's awesome. Like it was so fascinating to me. Yeah. And that's what
00:07:36.820 I want, right? I have a region. So my, I bought like a large amount of like, actually from Tim
00:07:43.580 kennedy's dad i bought they he harvested like a like a cow on his property and uh and i have like
00:07:51.520 a reach-in freezer and my son is 12 30 turning 13 he has all his friends over we lift all the time
00:07:57.000 and it's just a bunch of like young boys who are hungry all the time so i want to have this meat in
00:08:02.300 my freezer and so i've i've wanted to go out and hunt and so i'm gonna go hunt for this deer and
00:08:09.000 i'm gonna you know seal it freeze it bring it home and i'm looking forward to that experience
00:08:15.120 because um i've never done it before and it's a skill i want to learn and it's something that i
00:08:20.080 think that for a guy who's eaten meat his whole life and not experience it it's probably overdue
00:08:25.280 and i should try it it is overdue for sure you'll have a great time and if you want to come on a
00:08:30.780 hunt with me um i've i'm actually leaving tomorrow no two days from this recording i'm going to hunt
00:08:38.640 whitetail in minnesota and then i'm going to shoot long range a long range shooting school
00:08:43.540 with vortex optics who i need to introduce you to vortex do you know them over yeah i mean i know
00:08:49.580 vortex yeah for sure um but you know the people over there i need to make a connection for you
00:08:54.660 i have that's what i um i have vortex on my pistols for red dots and then i have um i have
00:09:02.080 night force on my, um, my rifles. Let's get you at a night for us. Let's get you a hundred percent
00:09:08.800 over to vortex. Um, I'm going to be hanging out with those guys. Uh, one of my good friends is
00:09:13.980 their CMO man. Awesome. And then, so I'm going to be out there and then two days later, I'm going
00:09:19.860 to Martha's vineyard to hunt whitetail on Martha's vineyard. And I'm going to piss off a bunch of
00:09:24.740 people, which is just as exciting to me as it is the actual hunt itself. I'm sure Martha's vineyard
00:09:30.200 is probably like gonna be like a normal hunt but just when you say it it makes it sound like it's
00:09:35.020 like super bougie like i could just see you being in like some grandiose state walking out and i
00:09:41.540 don't know they're just the name of it right like obviously a lot of people heard of it the way that
00:09:46.320 i envision it is i'm gonna walk out at about 7 30 8 o'clock in the morning in my cigar robe yes uh
00:09:54.980 With a Frappuccino latte, I'm going to pull up my 6'5 Creedmoor, set it on the rail of the deck, and then there's going to be just like a nice, you know, 10-point standing at about 50, 80 yards, and I'm going to plug them, and then I'm going to go back in and let my servant take care of the rest for me.
00:10:16.820 That's how I envision it.
00:10:19.260 You're visualizing success there.
00:10:21.080 yeah i i i think the exact same thing and chances are it's not going to be that at all but uh good
00:10:28.440 luck i hope you have a lot of fun out there it'll be fun man we're going out with a crew of nine
00:10:33.080 guys 10 10 guys including me so 10 so 10 uh and yeah we're just gonna what a great opportunity
00:10:39.040 to connect you and i should go hunting sometime man dude i'd love to i mean i i've there's been
00:10:44.400 opportunities that presented themselves but this one in particular just seemed like all right it
00:10:48.160 was time um you know i'm getting that age and i'm sure that a lot of guys listening like i want to
00:10:54.340 continue to evolve i want to continue to learn i want to continue to you know be my do all the
00:10:59.760 things and that's why obviously i host all the men's club workouts which i'm sure we'll talk
00:11:03.820 about but that's also why this year you know it's funny i got my black belt in jujitsu in december
00:11:09.940 i went to the police academy in june and hopefully by the end of this year i'll become a volunteer
00:11:16.120 reserve for the sheriff's department. And, you know, I was at a backgrounds check yesterday
00:11:22.580 with a woman and she's like, Hey, basically without saying it, she said like this, I'm the
00:11:28.160 oldest applicant she's ever seen. Right. And, um, it just got me thinking like, just because you're
00:11:34.160 older, just because you're 40 or whatever it is, doesn't mean you can't go learn new things and go
00:11:37.920 do new things how old are you I'm 41 yeah yeah I mean it's interesting I was talking with somebody
00:11:46.500 the other day and 41 30 years ago looked old bro bro like it's it's wild to me I my mom just sent
00:11:58.240 me a message this morning she's 71 years old yep she sent me a message this morning and she said
00:12:05.940 hey rye hope you're doing well like i miss you love you care about you blah blah the mom stuff
00:12:10.860 sure and she's like i have a not blah blah blah that's probably a bad way to say that but like
00:12:16.360 the mom stuff and she said i have uh a meeting with a travel agent next week i'm gonna go live 0.98
00:12:24.580 in africa for a month with the gorillas dude and i'm like let's go fuck like i was like wait mom 0.97
00:12:32.700 i didn't say this to her but in my mind i was like you're 71 this woman and three weeks ago 0.98
00:12:41.680 she messaged me and and she said hey um hey i hope you have a good weekend uh we're having fun over
00:12:47.960 here um i'm i'm just about to jump out of a plane we're going skydiving me and my granddaughter
00:12:53.880 my niece are going skydiving um so like see you on the ground or something i'm like what is what
00:13:01.440 is happening dude your mom i love the legend she is that but that's so awesome but that's the way
00:13:08.920 it should be you know it's it's it's funny my mom and dad right now are in utah and they just got
00:13:12.800 done like hot air ballooning and i i do part of utah oh they're all over the place i think right
00:13:18.360 now they're in they're in zion um uh but they oh that's 20 minutes from me oh really yeah they
00:13:23.860 just traveled around they went to park city then they did all kinds of different things um by the
00:13:29.260 utah is an incredible state beautiful beautiful yeah but you know it's interesting because that's
00:13:34.480 one of the reasons why we should be keeping up with our fitness too um you know if you want to
00:13:38.660 go do things as you get older you don't want to be limited by your physical ability and yeah it's
00:13:44.960 just it's just one of those things i think when you look at people around you who are like in
00:13:47.960 their late 60s 70s maybe even early 80s and they're still crushing it well a part of that
00:13:53.280 not all of it but a part of it is that they've probably taken care of themselves so they could
00:13:56.820 still go and do these things they want to go do. Yeah. I actually went several months ago and I've
00:14:03.700 got a good friend. He's a chiropractor in the area. And we, we had a conversation. He said,
00:14:08.200 you know, Ryan, the, the, the best thing that you can do as you get older, I'm 45 years old.
00:14:13.200 So he said, the best thing that you can do as a 45 year old is just be strong. It's like when
00:14:18.520 people die outside of heart conditions, cancer, those sorts of things, people die because they
00:14:25.360 fall down and they can't push themselves back up. That's right. And he said, the best thing that you
00:14:31.540 can do as a man at your age is continue to build muscle so that if you fall and you probably won't
00:14:38.740 if you build muscle, but if you fall, you can push yourself up. I had a close friend reach out to me
00:14:43.360 and he's like, man, I haven't heard from my mom for two or three days. And I called her and I
00:14:48.020 reached out to family members his mom was stuck pinned between the bed and the wall
00:14:55.400 for two and a half days because she couldn't push herself up it's wild and this is a tangent but it
00:15:04.080 is the truth too is that we are actually seeing an influx so for um for your listeners i am i own
00:15:11.240 two companies one of them is brick and mortar gyms that i've had for about 20 years and the
00:15:16.180 other one is an online community called train hard, uh, primarily for men. But the reason why
00:15:21.620 I'm bringing that up is that in the gyms, we're actually seeing an influx of people who have
00:15:26.680 gotten on GLP ones as a tool, which is, which I actually think if you're at a place in your life
00:15:33.060 and you are stuck and you feel like there's no whatever, and you find a GLP of one that could
00:15:38.300 help you lose some weight and then get on the path, like good for you. But then to be able to
00:15:44.420 recognize that your uh muscle especially this is going to be for women and for men you're going to
00:15:49.240 lose a lot of muscle you're going to lose a lot of everything as you're on these and so we're
00:15:52.240 seeing an influx of people coming in who want to retain or gain strength as they lose this weight
00:15:57.960 and i think long term it's i mean it's it's building more awareness for the importance
00:16:01.960 of strength training is the reason why i'm bringing that up now uh so glp ones you're
00:16:07.560 talking about semiglutide ozempic i think retta is a glp3 maybe that's that's the newest one yeah
00:16:15.900 yeah i mean there's always something new but i do i do like what you're saying about okay look
00:16:23.540 we can we can i mean basically what those drugs do is limit your appetite like if we can strip
00:16:29.600 especially the original appetite the original ozempic was definitely like a it reduced your
00:16:35.880 craving and it reduced your uh you know hunger desire right but now they've gotten way more
00:16:40.960 advanced um i mean like to the ones you were just uh referencing they've they've now taken
00:16:46.640 parts of each one and they're who knows what's going to be in five years from now right
00:16:50.920 yeah it's interesting it's also a little a little scary you know like i i think of um
00:17:00.220 oh what's that movie with uh will smith where you know people turn into zombies or whatever
00:17:08.140 i can't even remember what it's called but people turn into zombies and it's like dude i wonder what
00:17:14.520 will turn into you know we're like we genetically engineer all these things and really what you need
00:17:20.480 to do is you need to go move a lot more i mean it's as simple as well tell me if i'm wrong if
00:17:28.060 you moved, if you take 10,000 steps per day, you lift as heavy as you possibly can four days a week
00:17:39.700 and you have a, let's say two to 300 calorie deficit per day, you're going to get fricking
00:17:49.980 jacked. Yeah. And I think that I think as simplest approach, right. It's what you're saying,
00:17:57.060 right? You gotta, you gotta, I have this concept of never zero, right? You just gotta have the
00:18:00.840 momentum, just keep moving. But the, you know, it's like pushing a sled. You just gotta keep the
00:18:05.680 sled going just a little bit, right? You don't have to go crazy, right? Just lift some, lift
00:18:09.900 some objects, hold some heavy stuff, go for walks, maybe jog. And it's pretty simple in nature where
00:18:16.640 I think it becomes a little bit more complex is that when you are off that path and you've been
00:18:21.380 off that path for a long time and you've tried different things to get back on it, it's being
00:18:26.300 mindful of what tools you might need to help you, but then it should just be a tool. It shouldn't
00:18:30.800 be a crutch. And I think the same thing, you know, it's really interesting because how many of you
00:18:34.560 guys do you know that are on TRT? Probably a lot, right? Like, yeah, absolutely. And so I haven't
00:18:41.220 taken testosterone, but what I will tell you is I have met more men than I could count that
00:18:46.660 testosterone has changed their life. They've became a better husband, a better father. They've
00:18:51.440 became uh better energy because of that testosterone so i guess i'm trying to say is like there are
00:18:56.840 tools available to people that i think can be useful as long as you recognize obviously the
00:19:02.100 downside and that they're just tools and not to only rely on them as the sole source of whatever
00:19:06.480 because you can take testosterone and not do any of the other things and never get to where you
00:19:10.380 could be if you just started living a more healthy lifestyle as well well i mean i'm on trt so there
00:19:17.120 you go yeah uh yeah i i've taken it and when you know what's interesting is when i started taking
00:19:23.560 it full disclosure is when i was in the throes of my alcohol abuse and alcohol is sugar so it drives
00:19:31.420 up estrogen it inhibits testosterone development and adherence to your your body like it's it's
00:19:38.840 just not a good thing for any man so i started taking it and now that i'm sober it's interesting
00:19:46.180 because yeah, it's, it's a tool. It's a resource. It, it, it makes me feel better. It, it improves
00:19:52.720 my drive. Um, it improves my, my mental clarity. Like everything about it has been really good,
00:19:59.680 but I also move. I also work out. I also train. I also like, there's so much more behind it.
00:20:08.040 It's like a supplement when people say, well, I'm just going to take a protein shake.
00:20:11.260 i'm like yeah dude take a protein shake but at some point you got to eat some real meat
00:20:16.760 you know at some point you actually have to do something about your baseline physical
00:20:22.440 regimen your nutrition and yeah supplements are supplemental that's that it's literally
00:20:32.060 called the thing that it is but i i get frustrated when people think that we have these end all save
00:20:38.080 balls through no you don't you don't i mean but at the end of the day what i have found the biggest
00:20:43.380 impact for many many many many many men is you know prioritize your workout early lift heavy
00:20:50.500 objects that are relative to you right you'll lift more later uh get in some basic cardiovascular
00:20:57.140 aerobic conditioning and just remain consistent and you got to just do that and you just got to
00:21:02.500 be able to recognize that like dude fitness is just going to play a role in your life for the
00:21:06.520 rest of your life. And if it doesn't, eventually it's going to catch up to you. And like, I don't
00:21:11.780 want to be the guy, you know, we talk about this idea of protecting and providing. I don't want to
00:21:16.240 be the guy. Like yesterday, a friend of mine calls me. He's like, dude, I got to move a Peloton
00:21:20.340 treadmill. This is a true story. And so I go over there. I'm like, holy shit. I don't know if you've
00:21:24.820 seen these Peloton treadmills, at least the one he had. It was way heavier than I thought. So I
00:21:29.620 looked it up online. It was 450 to 500 pounds. And I'm just thinking, oh, we're just going to,
00:21:33.760 Yeah, dude, hella heavy.
00:21:35.160 So I'm just thinking like, and so I get there
00:21:37.840 and I look at what we're trying to do.
00:21:39.240 It's in the basement.
00:21:40.180 We need to go up these like really steep, you know, stairs
00:21:44.120 and then outdoors and then basically you're good, right?
00:21:47.560 Because then you can just wheel it.
00:21:48.920 And I looked at it and definitely my ego got in the way, right?
00:21:51.560 Where I'm thinking to myself, like, dude, me and this guy,
00:21:53.200 we're both strong, capable people.
00:21:54.620 Like we should be able to do this.
00:21:55.920 And sure enough, it took us a long ass time.
00:21:58.020 It was very difficult.
00:21:58.900 Chances are we probably shouldn't have.
00:21:59.960 We probably put our backs at risk, but we got the job done.
00:22:02.340 but the point being is that i want to be a place in my life and i'm sure you do too and many men
00:22:07.360 listening who we are capable we are capable in the gym and outside the gym to run jump climb lift
00:22:14.700 do the things that we need to do from a protection perspective that's really important to me
00:22:19.060 fighting and that kind of stuff i think is a is you know highly unlikely but your ability to have
00:22:24.720 to like run jump climb lift i'm sure it's really high and then dude even bigger than that and i
00:22:30.060 know that with your son like i want to be able to provide experiences for my kids like it's really
00:22:34.860 important to me that they know that if they want to go do something physical like dad's dad's gonna
00:22:40.340 go do it because i train so that i could say yes and that's really important to me so that that's
00:22:45.940 that's the motivation for the dads out there and for the men is like dude one day your kids gonna
00:22:50.900 come up to you they're gonna ask you to do something physical and um the last thing you
00:22:55.020 want to do is say no and you can only say no so many times and they're just gonna stop asking
00:22:58.440 man i'm just going to step away from the conversation we'll get back to it here shortly
00:23:03.200 every time or excuse me every man i should say gets hit with a hard season at some point maybe
00:23:08.780 you're going through one right now a layoff a diagnosis a marriage that's gone quiet a kid
00:23:14.820 who's you know stopped calling you but you don't get to skip winter you only get to decide whether
00:23:20.120 you're ready when it shows up and if you spent the good years consuming it finds you with nothing
00:23:27.660 in reserve for the people that you care about. But if you spent them building, you'll be able
00:23:32.060 to work through it. And that's exactly what we're tackling in The War Room, which is a free live
00:23:36.680 workshop that I'm hosting on Wednesday, November 18th at 8 p.m. Eastern. In this one hour, we're
00:23:42.580 going to start working through which season you're actually in and which one you've been living like.
00:23:48.860 But we're going to find where you're consuming more than you produce in your money,
00:23:52.060 your body, your family, and also your brotherhood. And you're going to leave that workshop with a
00:23:59.120 plan to make this season count before the next one arrives. This isn't a pep talk. I say that
00:24:04.220 all the time. It's a workshop. So bring your pen, bring a notepad, and also come ready with an
00:24:11.900 honest look at where you are. So guys, you can save your seat at orderofman.com slash war room.
00:24:17.160 that's orderman.com slash war room do that right after the conversation let's get back to it with
00:24:23.160 jason man i i had that situation probably 15 years ago i got home busting my tail trying to make ends
00:24:33.960 me building my financial planning practice i get home and my oldest two boys are like hey dad let's
00:24:40.500 go jump on the trampoline. This was a pivotal moment for me. I'm like, boys, like, no, I can't.
00:24:49.520 And they were young, right? They were probably like what?
00:24:51.820 They were young, like seven, five, seven years old, somewhere in there.
00:24:55.160 Yeah. Right.
00:24:56.100 And I said, boys, I can't. And then in that moment, I actually started getting CrossFit
00:25:02.220 in that moment too. And in that moment, so I remember I was sitting at a local parade. It
00:25:08.860 Could have either been 4th of July or Peach Days, which is a local parade we do here in my hometown.
00:25:15.840 And there was a guy who was opening a brand new CrossFit gym, CrossFit Blackridge.
00:25:24.140 And I was like, yeah, I need to go do that.
00:25:27.340 And so I started doing that because I couldn't live with the fact, he was eroding my soul,
00:25:33.500 the fact that I couldn't even go jump on the trampoline with my two boys after work. And it
00:25:40.140 wasn't like I was in the military at the time or like chopping wood all day. I was sitting behind
00:25:46.800 a desk selling, selling insurance and investments. It was, it wasn't physically hard, but I still
00:25:57.020 was exhausted at the end of the day and I couldn't do it. And that was a cathartic moment for me.
00:26:01.620 and the reason why you said no and the reason why i think a lot of guys say no
00:26:05.300 is like something goes through their head right so take for example the trampoline
00:26:09.820 you're thinking to yourself okay i've been i'm tired okay i'm tired i just the last thing i want
00:26:15.680 to do is go jump on trampoline i want to go sit in a in a cozy chair and drink a beer okay all
00:26:20.420 right that's that's the first thing the second thing that goes through your mind is like dude
00:26:24.660 i might get hurt like i haven't jumped on a trampoline in years i might not be physically
00:26:29.180 able to do that. And I don't want to hurt myself. Right. And then, and then, um, you know, and then
00:26:34.520 the third one would obviously be like, I don't want to look weak in front of my kids or whatever
00:26:38.480 it is. Like the point is like, no matter which one of those like kind of crosses your mind,
00:26:42.320 it's like, it's our responsibility to, to, to be able to say yes. And it's been one of the greatest
00:26:49.800 things of my life that I could enjoy these different experiences with my kids. And I don't
00:26:56.140 take that for granted that i put in the work early so i can still show up for them um when especially
00:27:00.920 when they get home from school i mean that's a good point so my second son he's 15 he came over
00:27:08.060 this was probably two weeks ago he walks in the door and the first thing he does is he takes his
00:27:13.980 shirt off hell yeah and he says he says i'm bigger than you dad that's what he said i'm bigger than
00:27:20.260 you dad and he walked up to me and he shoulder checked me yeah he did yeah he did and then he
00:27:29.560 stood in the mirror and he flexed you know and so i did the only thing that you know a dad is
00:27:35.160 supposed to do i took my shirt off and flexed um and he's pretty big actually i was like thank kid
00:27:42.060 like you're looking pretty good uh but last night i had my three boys over i've got three boys i've
00:27:48.040 got a daughter as well but my three boys came over and we wrestled and I beat all of them
00:27:55.760 because I'm the dad I should stay out ahead of it and I'll be damned if I let one of those boys
00:28:03.480 beat me I'll be on my deathbed before I let one of those boys beat me but it's fun like it's so
00:28:08.740 much better to be in shape and to be lively and to be excited and to be able to hold your own 0.97
00:28:16.420 than it is to be just fat and overweight and out of shape and pathetic and the thing but it's like 0.93
00:28:24.940 rude but well and if you're listening to this you're like dude like my i'm not there the reason 0.96
00:28:30.860 why like this is so powerful is that it's like it's in your control right it's something that's
00:28:35.680 in your control and you can start making steps towards it tomorrow and like they're just giving
00:28:41.460 like a like kind of a little bit of like kind of like a little oomph towards you man like if you're
00:28:45.880 listening to this right now and you're like, dude, that sounds, I don't, I, you know, if my son came
00:28:50.160 home right now and did that, like he would look way better than me. I don't want that. Well, dude,
00:28:55.640 it's okay. No big deal. Like start tomorrow. Let's get you on a program. Let's get you training.
00:28:59.860 Let's get you going. And, um, I'll tell you what, it's been really eyeopening for me, especially
00:29:04.900 with young boys. I'm sure you've seen this probably more than I have. So I have a 12, uh, turning 13
00:29:10.200 boy and i have a 15 year old daughter and i'm completely different right obviously like just
00:29:17.080 completely different kids and these group of 13 year old boys that come over to our house and
00:29:23.080 they strength train and we have a really nice setup and i've i'm so proud to to be able to help
00:29:28.600 guide them on their strength training journey but it's really interesting because they'll come over
00:29:32.400 and dude even at a young age i'm sure you've seen this dude they're stacking up they're they're
00:29:36.980 seeing where do where do I as the dad stack up and where do they stack up against each other like
00:29:41.200 they're they created their own leaderboard they're kind of having that little bit of kind of like
00:29:45.100 who's the strongest head mentality and I could tell just by the way that when I'm talking to him
00:29:50.560 like dude there's definitely something within these young boys that they want to have structure
00:29:56.240 they want to have inspiration and they want you the dad or whoever to like be about it and like
00:30:02.820 walk the walk and talk the talk and it's really have you noticed that before like like these
00:30:07.680 young boys like i'll say whatever and it's like they there's more credibility there because they
00:30:13.560 know that i could do it you know i'm saying like it's really interesting watching these young boys
00:30:17.320 as they mature into young men and how much they appreciate uh men who who kind of take care of
00:30:25.680 themselves who act a certain way like you i see it in the way they talk to me compared to maybe
00:30:30.840 other situations yeah i mean they'll respect you more you know it it's kind of like that old 0.98
00:30:38.700 adage of like well my dad could kick your dad's ass right yeah and you should be the dad who 0.97
00:30:45.220 your son is saying like oh yeah my dad could take your dad that's who you should be but yeah i do 0.99
00:30:52.460 think there's just this level of of of respect of reverence for a man who carries himself well
00:31:00.900 you know when people come over when when so so my my second son got into the habit and we've
00:31:09.720 talked about it which i i don't i don't actually hate it but he said hey um i'm gonna have you
00:31:14.760 know, Chris or whatever over. And, uh, he thinks he can take you like, right, bring it on. So we
00:31:22.620 have mats in our closet and we'll roll out the mat. We'll move the couches. We'll move the
00:31:27.300 furniture and we'll roll out mats. And I remember the first time he did it. He's like, Hey, this
00:31:32.680 kid, he thinks he can take you. I'm like, yeah, bring it on. Let's go. And about maybe a month
00:31:40.080 and a half ago he brought a kid over this kid's never wrestled never trained jujitsu
00:31:45.740 he was a handful like kind of country strong type of guy like like totally yeah i had to fight like
00:31:55.260 i had to fight and you know fortunately i was able to hold my own but i was like oh boy this
00:32:00.260 is getting different at this point but that's what it should be like it's like that's what it
00:32:04.220 should be like thinks you can take you no he can't take me and neither can you because i'm the man
00:32:09.140 and this is eventually right if you do get taken like okay like yeah good good it's like it's really
00:32:16.080 interesting you know because um in jujitsu right like these instructors that i've had for 10 years
00:32:21.200 at some point now like there's gonna be a moment where like the instructor as the student starts
00:32:28.160 to because of the instructor teaching the student eventually hopefully the goal should be that the
00:32:33.540 student can do better than the instructor eventually right our goal is just to have that
00:32:38.380 delayed as long as possible at least with my kids right so like my son he um he's he's pretty strong
00:32:44.600 and i know there will be a day that he's going to outlift me like i know it it's already it's
00:32:50.240 already written in the books it's going to happen my job is just to delay that as long as possible
00:32:54.760 that's it yeah i i like the delay and i i think the mentality too is also like i wanted him to
00:33:02.840 get i want to be something he strives for right so i want to delay it but i also want him to be
00:33:08.760 aspirational i mean my oldest son this was probably eight months eight nine months ago
00:33:14.900 he's like dad i'm gonna hit a pr on my back squat yeah and he was
00:33:19.780 what was he 17 young 17 at the time and i'm like all right well let's let's go we got a rack out
00:33:27.780 in the garage i'm like let's go see what you got bro what did he get what did he get uh i think his
00:33:36.400 final thing was 405 pounds back squat yeah clean yeah like no assist full depth and he was 17 i'm
00:33:46.880 like i can't i can't i can't lift 405 no you're gonna be like dude if i try that my knees are
00:33:52.780 gonna break so i'm gonna i'm gonna stick over here with uh some tempo 225 squats or whatever
00:33:57.000 right and that's fine and and i move from like straight bar like i'm old enough where i'm like
00:34:01.300 i'm using our dead list i'm doing trap dead list trap bar yeah yeah because i'm i'm why i'm not
00:34:07.400 doing that i'm not gonna hurt myself but to see myself i was so proud of him you know like he can
00:34:13.560 outlift me by leaps and bounds up lower body not upper body lower body he's got me beat um but i'm
00:34:20.780 so proud of that like we should want that but we should also give them something to strive for
00:34:26.340 something to achieve to yeah right now we're doing a bench press cycle on the train like our
00:34:31.260 train hard program and it's inspired by the um nfl combine the 225 max reps and i just was curious
00:34:38.820 like what can we get our guys to do what can i do and the inspiration was like the first time you
00:34:43.880 ever hit two wheels i remember like i was in high school and i hit two wheels uh that's 225 for like
00:34:49.300 two plates and especially back in those gyms you'd have like the metal ones that like ding ding ding
00:34:54.400 ding and you'd be like bro let's load up two wheels and there was something special about
00:34:58.280 bigger faster stronger was that a program you used yeah that's what he used in high school as well
00:35:03.660 yeah i mean and and i mean yeah so i guess the point i'm trying to make is like there's a lot
00:35:10.280 of nostalgia around some of these things and i think that um as i've been working with the youth
00:35:14.940 in strength conditioning it's been really eye-opening for me that as much as we coach them
00:35:18.840 in in sports outside the the gym we should also be encouraging them to round out their overall
00:35:24.160 athleticism using the gym and so that's that's what i've been trying to do with the boys and at
00:35:27.720 least play my role um they want to start doing some grappling here i've kind of delayed it
00:35:32.400 only because uh i just i get worried about these you know you know 12 13 year old boys trying to
00:35:40.300 grapple and me being responsible for them but that's that's maybe next no i look i get it you
00:35:47.300 have to worry about it because there's some soft parents out there they're like well they were at
00:35:50.560 jason's house and he broke his nose i'm like well he shouldn't have done whatever he did like he
00:35:55.340 deserved to get his nose broken or he broke his arm or he you know he strained his muscle or
00:36:00.500 whatever that's a hard balance though because that's a real thing you need to contend with
00:36:05.600 when you do your train hard stuff is i know you do that you do that all throughout the nation right
00:36:10.800 yeah i think this is the path like how do we get guys together to do these sorts of things and more
00:36:16.420 you know not just the physical aspect but everything else yeah so about three years ago
00:36:21.260 and i think you and i we've we've talked about this in the past but about three years ago i
00:36:24.540 started hosting free workouts for men in a parking lot and i've owned gyms for years i've
00:36:30.320 i've competed in crossfit i have a coaching background and what i saw just in my local
00:36:35.340 community is that we had a group of men who you know i felt like i mean there were so many layers
00:36:41.240 to it but one was that you know when we met we would always meet for like beer and pizza for
00:36:45.600 the kid's school. And like, there's nothing wrong with that particular, but we never did any other
00:36:49.360 meetups. Like it was just always, Hey, let's come together. Let's drink some beer and have some
00:36:53.880 pizza. And I'm like, dude, that's cool. Let's do that. But let's also maybe go for a ruck,
00:36:58.160 go work out, go do something physical. Let's whatever, just cause that was my background.
00:37:02.560 And so I started saying, I put out an invite to meet in a parking lot and no fee, no nothing.
00:37:09.080 And I'm not coaching. I'm just a captain. I'm just a dude leading a workout. And it started
00:37:13.520 it three years ago and it's just spawned into something really special so for the next two
00:37:17.380 years i hosted every week um or sometimes we'd have a co-captain jump in if i was traveling
00:37:22.280 and we grew and we started having a lot of guys come out and so at my club i get we get about a
00:37:29.380 hundred guys a weekend in the parking lot and we bring out sandbags we throw down yeah so tomorrow
00:37:33.940 morning at 6 a.m every every week for three years this club has met every single week where you
00:37:40.880 parking lot like walmart or like where do you guys meet for us we meet at the los gatos library so
00:37:46.460 it's a it's a public library and we we use a parking lot the reason why for us we had to do
00:37:50.780 that is we bounced around the first year we tried a few different locations but ultimately our group
00:37:56.180 got so big which by the way for the record i think that our group is probably a little bit too big
00:38:00.840 uh it's kind of an anomaly we would want i think the sweet spot somewhere between 15 and 30 guys
00:38:06.480 so from our guys show up every week hunter guys that's crazy that's awesome it's just crazy yeah
00:38:14.500 um so yeah just so from our club it's now spawned into more clubs which is the goal right so
00:38:21.180 uh we had guys who lived in san jose which is like you know 20 minutes away or in morgan hill
00:38:26.020 which like 20 minutes away and so they started their own ones locally in the bay area and so
00:38:31.840 we have these workouts guys come it's completely free it's open for any guy and it's our way of
00:38:39.520 just getting back to some old school principles of just connecting with dudes and doing something
00:38:45.080 hard and so we start off with the train hard burpee tests we get into some strength training
00:38:49.480 using the sandbags we do a little workout we do a finisher we all finish together and we walk
00:38:54.660 across the street or some clubs bring the coffee and we grab coffee and so we've been doing this
00:39:00.240 every week and i'd say about a year ago i would continue to get feedback oh that's so cool and i
00:39:07.540 would just text people i would just tell be like bro like hey ryan you want to go start a club just
00:39:11.700 go text some friends and tell them to meet you at a underground parking garage pavilion uh you name
00:39:17.300 the spot tell them to meet you there bring a couple of dumbbells bring a sandbag and here's a workout
00:39:21.880 you could follow but what i didn't realize like these guys were looking for more guidance and
00:39:26.580 direction and i was kind of dismissing them for lack of a better term i just was like bro yeah go
00:39:30.380 do it you know like of course so fast forward a year ago we started rolling out like like train
00:39:37.360 hard men's clubs and we put them on a map and since then it's just really grown so now we have
00:39:43.520 100 clubs that are offering free workouts for men in parking lots parks whatever all over the world
00:39:50.260 and the growth has been exponential.
00:39:53.260 And it's been the most meaningful thing that I could do
00:39:58.260 for, I think, generational change long-term.
00:40:01.420 My vision for this is that we're going to get millions of men
00:40:06.280 to go to parking lots, parks, whatever.
00:40:10.080 And I believe that then they will go home
00:40:12.700 after that six o'clock workout
00:40:14.420 and be better versions of themselves.
00:40:17.160 Chances are they'll have a few less beers on Friday night.
00:40:19.620 they'll show up at 6 a.m they'll leave at 7 15 after having a great workout and good conversation
00:40:25.260 over coffee they'll open their mind they'll learn something and they'll go walk into the door and
00:40:30.480 they're gonna be like what's up kids what's up wife whatever it is and they're gonna be calm 0.99
00:40:34.540 they're gonna be present they're gonna feel energized and they're gonna be kicking ass 0.91
00:40:38.340 and that i think long term will create generational change for what it looks like to be a man and
00:40:44.260 showing up for your family i love it dude so so okay so i've got a couple questions so
00:40:49.580 um when i moved to maine i went there was this little local convenience store that i went and
00:40:56.280 got you know like a red bull in the morning or whatever and got some pizza they made pizza that
00:41:01.660 was just delicious um and then i got to know the the woman who worked there quite often and i don't
00:41:07.580 know she must have been part owner in it and she said her name was jill she said to me do you know
00:41:12.100 what ryan people are calling you and i'm like what do you mean like what are they calling me what
00:41:17.920 like, no, I don't know what people are calling me. And she said, they're calling you the weird
00:41:22.820 workout people. Uh, and I was like, what? Like the weird workout people, what are you talking
00:41:28.720 about? She's like, well, you're always out there like flipping tires and like carrying logs with 1.00
00:41:34.340 a bunch of dudes and like hitting a sledgehammer on a tire. That's weird. I'm like, it is kind of
00:41:42.280 weird actually. Yeah, totally. I don't care. I'm going to keep doing it, but it is kind of weird.
00:41:47.920 I wonder if there's an opportunity here to translate, you know, like the weird workout people mentality to hunting or to survival skills or to something that is actually like, and I'm not saying fitness isn't, but applicable, an applicable skill set in the real world.
00:42:08.900 Does that even make sense?
00:42:10.400 Well, I think that, yes.
00:42:12.540 um i think the reason why it's applicable is because of what what we're doing transcends
00:42:20.180 just your physical fitness and gets into so much more and i would make the argument right that
00:42:26.520 the hunt that you're going on the the the the group of guys hitting sledgehammers
00:42:31.960 i i think we need to be more intentional as men than ever to be mindful of these meetups because
00:42:39.860 otherwise we're going to live in a world where a friend of mine said it like this where our feet
00:42:44.940 never touch the grass meaning yeah we are on digital we're on ai we're on all these things
00:42:50.680 all the time and we never have a moment to be grounded and the problem with that is if you look
00:42:56.780 back generations and generations there was always a group of men who would go and they'd work and
00:43:01.440 then they'd maybe like gather around somewhere right they'd eat lunch they'd be around a fire
00:43:05.560 pit, whatever. We've lost that. And the reason why that matters so much is that we are now in
00:43:11.740 our own echo chamber more than ever. So our views are becoming more narrow. Our perspective is
00:43:18.160 becoming more narrow. And I think men need to be open-minded. They need to have different
00:43:23.120 perspectives. And I think that's what this club offers. It gives an opportunity for men to have
00:43:27.280 an excuse to go work out, get these endorphins running, get the physical benefits of all the
00:43:32.140 things, right? Of course. And then gives them an opportunity to sit down for a cup of coffee with
00:43:35.900 a dude. Maybe they know, maybe they don't know. And slowly start to actually have their mind open
00:43:41.800 and evolve. And I think that that should never stop.
00:43:47.340 What do you think? I asked my co-host for the Ask Me Anything just a couple hours ago,
00:43:52.760 because we recorded a podcast. What do you think is the actual benefit to an individual man
00:43:59.300 to do something like this i mean obviously you know physical fitness being in better shape sure
00:44:04.360 we get that uh a lot of guys will say well accountability camaraderie brotherhood which
00:44:11.420 is all true but what is the actual benefit to men of camaraderie brotherhood accountability etc
00:44:19.120 well i would say that and i i i i assume you agree with this there are always men
00:44:28.000 that have chartered a course in front of you
00:44:30.680 and what can I learn from them?
00:44:32.600 So like, I'll give you an example.
00:44:35.200 We have dozens of men that sit down for coffee.
00:44:38.500 Chances are, if I'm struggling with the situation with my wife,
00:44:41.420 if I'm struggling with the situation at work,
00:44:43.180 if I'm struggling with the situation with my kids,
00:44:45.060 chances are someone there has already navigated that road
00:44:48.440 and how can they help me navigate it better?
00:44:51.160 That's just old school mentality.
00:44:54.600 But us believing that we have all the answers,
00:44:56.660 that we've gone through everything,
00:44:57.540 that's not true um there everyone faces some form of adversity whether it's divorce illness you name
00:45:04.720 it but how can you be in an environment of men who could help guide you through that process and
00:45:09.480 make it easier on you that's that's the first thing i'd say the second thing i'd say is that
00:45:14.000 i believe that the train hard men's club and i i should believe this uh can and will change your
00:45:21.520 life because I have now witnessed over the span of three years, many, many, many men tell me it
00:45:28.100 has changed their life. So last, last week I'm at the club. There's this dude. He shows up a year
00:45:33.520 ago. He came to the club. He threw up his first time and he came every week. Since then last week,
00:45:39.460 he goes, Hey Jason, I'm just letting you know, I'm celebrating my one year anniversary of coming
00:45:43.020 out here every week. I said, dude, congrats. I said, what has this done for you? And he looks
00:45:47.140 me straight in the eye, Ryan. He says, it has completely changed my life. And then just kind
00:45:51.980 of walked away. And I'm thinking to myself, completely changed my life. Like, what does that
00:45:55.420 mean? I don't know exactly what that means, but to that man, this club has given him purpose,
00:46:00.360 has given him guidance, has given him direction, has given him a weekly anchor. And we don't have
00:46:05.580 that many places. Like, here's a good example. Ask your wife, ask your girlfriend, whoever's
00:46:10.520 listening, when the last time they met with their girlfriends with no business intention for
00:46:16.620 breakfast breakfast lunch or dinner just got together with no intention chances are it's
00:46:23.520 going to be within the last week or two they got together with their girlfriends chances are yeah
00:46:26.980 now ask that same question to any guy guaranteed it's been at least six months maybe even a year
00:46:33.360 maybe even never that they've gotten together with a friend to just go do something right or
00:46:39.040 or go out to lunch go whatever with zero business intention and what we are doing is we're disguising
00:46:45.820 this connection with just we're giving guys a reason to get together it's like instead of
00:46:50.060 playing golf we're just going and getting a workout in every saturday morning at 6 a.m
00:46:53.020 and we're back before the kids even wake up as you can tell man i'm like really passionate about
00:46:58.720 this because i've seen firsthand it changed guys lives and opened their mind i'll give you one more
00:47:03.620 example and then i'll i'll kind of like chill for a second i just get fired up on this i had a guy
00:47:07.840 come in and he was suffering with a ptsd from some work that he did in um law enforcement
00:47:14.860 at the time if you had asked him what his faith was he probably would have said he was like a
00:47:19.760 atheist ish just kind of like kind of neutral right fast forward he comes into the club
00:47:27.300 he meets a group of men who were faith-based they're you know they believe in uh you know
00:47:33.360 they believe in god they believe that jesus is their their savior and slowly very slowly week
00:47:39.180 over week over week he just gets coffee with these guys and eventually they introduce them to what
00:47:44.100 they believe in it wasn't it wasn't forced it was just organic it was just conversation
00:47:47.880 just fast forward months later he gets baptized right so how can this impact the man is your
00:47:56.020 question well how did that guy how did that guy go from from struggling to now finding faith to
00:48:05.400 then getting baptized and having his life change it started because he was surrounding himself with
00:48:10.300 other men who are all trying to just live life and and just grow and get better and doors open
00:48:16.600 for him because of it the the only the only contention i have with that and tell me what
00:48:22.300 you think about this is you know you talk about women getting together and you said well you know
00:48:27.800 when's the last time your wife or your girlfriend got together probably in the last week because 0.84
00:48:32.120 women are relational creatures like that's just what they do right and they'll get together and 1.00
00:48:37.780 they'll talk about their husbands or their boyfriends and they'll talk about work and 1.00
00:48:41.800 their kids and they'll talk about the rainbow they saw yesterday and like all the craziest
00:48:47.220 things like they'll talk about everything and then a man comes home and his woman is like well
00:48:53.100 how's jason and i'd be like he's pretty good and and she'll say well like what's going on
00:49:00.260 this family i'm like i don't i don't know like he didn't say anything so i'm assuming like his
00:49:06.820 wife and kids are good. Well, what about work? I'm like, yeah, I didn't really bring that up.
00:49:12.160 Like I'm, I'm assuming works good. She's like, well, how you don't even know this guy. I'm like,
00:49:17.060 yeah, but you know what? If Jason called me at 2am, like I'd bust down doors to go meet him and
00:49:22.820 be there for him at 2am. It's just a difference in the sexes. But, um, you said something
00:49:29.980 interesting and this is what I took a little, a little issue with is, is you said, well,
00:49:34.840 when's the last time you guys got together to do to have no agenda i don't actually think guys work
00:49:40.480 that way generally and broadly i think we do need to have something either to fight for or against
00:49:48.820 whereas our female our lovely female counterparts they don't need a reason to get together but we
00:49:54.800 as men do and i i actually think to your credit you're addressing that in the train hard program
00:50:00.840 it's like no we're gonna go do the burpee challenge what is the burpee challenge by the
00:50:04.520 way like you you talked about like what is that test yeah so just a point of clarification i should
00:50:10.920 have yeah i mean obviously was when i say that guys get together with no agenda i guess the
00:50:17.060 point i'm trying to make is that what i've learned is like oh okay here's a great example hey ryan
00:50:21.920 um i'm in utah uh okay if i'm in utah and i hit you up i'm like hey bro you want to grab coffee
00:50:27.620 that's not weird right like hey um we know each other we're friends i'm in your neck of the woods
00:50:31.900 let's go grab coffee and it wouldn't be weird at all it would actually be completely normal
00:50:35.500 but if you and i would but i'd be more enticed to say like hey ryan do you want to go hit angels
00:50:40.180 landing i'd be hell yeah let's go do that together let's go do a hike let's go do something so guys
00:50:44.700 i i agree with you they want to they want to have a purpose behind their meetups right and what
00:50:50.680 we're doing is we're disguising connections i don't think guys need to be told like how to
00:50:55.900 connect i think we've been doing this for thousands of years what we need is we need a reason to be
00:51:01.600 at that point and so what we're doing is we're creating that reason with hey bro we got a 6 a.m
00:51:06.420 saturday workout it's completely free it's open for any guy it's 45 minutes come get your you know
00:51:10.640 butt kicked and then you're already there let's just go grab coffee yeah so so it's a it's a yeah
00:51:16.940 it's fair i totally agree with so yeah what would what i don't think would stick let me give you an
00:51:23.040 example if i try to create a coffee club for men where men just come have coffee and chat i don't
00:51:29.340 think we'd ever have much success i'm good bro i don't want to i don't want to have coffee with
00:51:34.780 you i'm good exactly but yet if i if i front load it with hey let's go grab a workout and then oh
00:51:41.720 dude hey man you got a minute let's just go grab a quick cup a quick cup of coffee there's like
00:51:45.400 70 other guys are joining us and we're just gonna go like riff around for a minute that's when i
00:51:50.160 think those conversations start to shift and to your point dude like we're not expecting guys
00:51:55.860 have their lives changed over one workout and then a coffee i don't think they're going to go there
00:52:00.720 and start spilling their life's problems to some guy that's never going to happen yeah but what is
00:52:06.460 going to happen is they're going to come there and they're going to be like dude i just moved to this
00:52:09.860 area i know nobody and at least now i know that guy john i'm him and i aren't great friends but
00:52:15.300 i know him and then the following week him and john talk a little bit more and they realize they
00:52:19.500 both love hockey and the following week they both connect and that's why i think the weekly
00:52:23.720 occurrence is so important is it gives 52 opportunities a year to actually like create
00:52:28.460 some level of like riffing and now what's really interesting and then i'll actually answer your
00:52:32.920 real question about the burpee test last week i was at a um a pizza party there was eight men there
00:52:38.400 and they brought their wives and their families none of these men knew each other before the
00:52:44.500 train hard men's club they all met because of it and they just started a whatsapp group where they
00:52:49.380 start riffing with each other using ai images about workouts or whatever and they started
00:52:53.940 connecting and now all of a sudden they bring their families together and they start connecting
00:52:57.640 that's what i think we're missing yeah no that's that's a good point like i i think you're right
00:53:04.520 like i just wouldn't want it to fall or land on deaf ears where guys are like i don't want to go
00:53:10.500 have a latte with my buddy i don't yeah it's weird like i don't i don't want to go have coffee with
00:53:16.060 you bro but if you said hey let's go on a hike or let's go raise a barn for our neighbor like yeah
00:53:22.980 i'll do that for sure let's go move let's go move a treadmill like yesterday like exactly yes exactly
00:53:28.020 there's a purpose but then it's like hey dude oh dude just move my treadmill like hey you want to
00:53:33.060 you want a quick beer real quick that's like yeah of course like let's let's hang out yeah so
00:53:36.580 but you know again i i just think that it's really important to note that like with these clubs
00:53:42.400 we're not trying to be therapists.
00:53:44.040 We're not trying to make it some like whatever session.
00:53:46.560 We're just focusing on doing a hard workout
00:53:49.040 and then getting men together.
00:53:50.100 And I believe that like we have for thousands of years,
00:53:53.620 we will figure it out.
00:53:54.780 But we need to have a reason
00:53:56.860 and a place where people can go.
00:54:00.120 Because if we don't do it, then who will, right?
00:54:02.280 If we don't take the initiative to say,
00:54:04.920 hey bro, come on out for a free workout, who will?
00:54:08.540 And that's what I've seen change lives.
00:54:10.960 so yeah um in regards so tell me so yeah tell me about the burpee test and then also tell me
00:54:18.940 where guys can learn more about the train hard sessions and find one in their local area
00:54:24.080 so the train hard burpee test originally started off i'd say close to 20 years ago for me when i
00:54:29.660 was competing professionally in crossfit i would do 15 burpees every minute for 10 minutes and i
00:54:35.060 would do this when i got off the plane i would do this anytime i was anywhere and it's a it's a
00:54:39.720 stamina building exercise and also you know obviously conditioning where 15 burpees at like
00:54:45.100 a moderate pace takes me and most men 45 to 48 seconds at a very moderate pace then you rest for
00:54:52.340 10 to 15 seconds you're doing a burpee if you're doing 15 per minute if my math's correct you're
00:54:57.720 doing one every four seconds is what you're doing yeah like yeah like three seconds you know uh if
00:55:03.140 three to three three and a half seconds and just nice and smooth and uh i used to do this all the
00:55:08.660 time so fast forward um i start the train hard men's club and i realized that 10 minutes was
00:55:14.240 just obnoxious it was too much volume it was way too much for guys so i reduced it down to five
00:55:19.580 minutes and now i've even said like the main goal is to get as many men in the world to do three
00:55:24.560 minutes of burpees 15 a minute so that's 45 total right um but in a minute yeah but what happens is
00:55:31.340 a lot of these guys they come out every single week we do five minutes 15 burpees every minute
00:55:37.060 for five minutes every week.
00:55:38.660 And I don't care if you get all the minutes,
00:55:42.280 you get one minute, you can't even get a minute.
00:55:44.680 Maybe you get five burpees the first minute.
00:55:46.080 It doesn't matter to me
00:55:46.840 because what it does is it creates a baseline.
00:55:48.880 And then you have something each week that you improve.
00:55:51.920 And as I've evolved this,
00:55:55.000 it started to became more than just like doing a burpee.
00:55:58.100 Now it represents your ability to control your heart rate.
00:56:00.600 And it's now translated into the way men show up at home 0.97
00:56:03.640 because the burpee test is all about
00:56:05.920 staying in the green zone and never hitting the deep red what happens is if you control your breath
00:56:10.880 and you have consistent breath work like swimming nice smooth breath right you could you could keep
00:56:17.500 your heart rate low and stay aerobic but as soon as your heart rate spikes it's very difficult to
00:56:21.960 recover so what we teach these men from the very beginning is be mindful of your breath and find
00:56:27.360 your cadence whatever that cadence is i don't care just figure out what it is and it has to be
00:56:31.900 consistent. And the reason why this matters so much is that now when they start to feel their
00:56:36.720 heart rate elevating when they get home, their kids are pissing them off. How can they relate
00:56:40.380 to this? When they start getting in a whatever, how can they go back to some basic breath work?
00:56:45.600 And I believe every guy listening to this show should be able to do at least three to five
00:56:50.580 minutes because that tells me they can move their body with purpose if they needed to for three to
00:56:57.640 five minutes and with purpose could be all kinds of stuff it could be you're in a physical
00:57:01.840 altercation it could be you're in a you know uh uh you know national disaster and you have to move
00:57:07.940 your body with purpose can you do that for three to five minutes is the question do you know what
00:57:13.560 your record is for the amount of either minutes that you've been able to keep this pace or the
00:57:20.740 most amount of burpees in a minute yeah so we have put it out um my best is 26 minutes 15 burpees
00:57:28.320 a minute that's my best damn yeah the best i've ever heard was 56 minutes best ever whoa and
00:57:35.820 verified verified i know this guy he's a he's a badass the reason why he was able to do it though 0.94
00:57:41.680 is because his body never went anaerobic he was able basically the way that you would go out for
00:57:47.220 a jog this dude was doing burpees so his heart rate never got high enough where he started to
00:57:52.560 kind of like he was able to stay in basically a zone two smooth because he manages heart rate
00:57:57.560 he had great obviously muscle and hip flexure stamina and he was just you know perfectly
00:58:03.380 designed for it but that's the goal how many burpees have you done in a minute do you know
00:58:08.460 your record i mean typically for us now because the five minutes is pretty easy at 15 um at the
00:58:16.160 last two minutes i'll bump it up to like 20 a minute but i think my most i mean i don't know
00:58:21.100 at least probably at least 30 it just depends on the standard of the burpee uh you know it's kind
00:58:27.120 of a gray area yeah i mean 30 is legit one every two seconds that's pretty legit i mean you gotta
00:58:34.540 really fly on that like i mean when i was really competing in crossfit i mean they're again the
00:58:39.320 standard matters right like our standard is get to the ground stand back up again if you want to
00:58:43.320 jump and clap great if you don't who cares but that's the goal yeah i always looked at it as
00:58:49.500 chest touches the floor feet come off the ground i don't care if it's a half an inch a quarter of
00:58:54.380 an inch or three inches feet come off the ground on the top chest hits the floor on the bottom
00:58:59.640 that's what i look at sure yeah i mean for us for the train hard standard i like go to the ground
00:59:05.540 feet you know like thighs and chest touch the ground and then you come to a standing position
00:59:09.780 because what you would see is you would see,
00:59:13.660 okay, if my feet needed to come up,
00:59:14.880 I would only come up halfway on my burpee
00:59:17.200 and then just like almost like do like a dolphin kick
00:59:19.940 and then go back down.
00:59:21.220 So the reason why I like standing up
00:59:23.100 is that it relates a little bit more
00:59:24.700 to like a tactical environment
00:59:25.920 where you drop down almost into a sprawl or a burpee
00:59:29.280 and then you come to a standing position
00:59:31.320 where you can then, if you wanted to fight from-
00:59:33.720 Like a battle ready position.
00:59:34.320 Yeah, exactly.
00:59:35.360 So that's why I like it.
00:59:37.460 People ask me, why don't I jump and clap?
00:59:39.440 And it's for that reason.
00:59:40.700 I like to get down and then kind of stand back up
00:59:43.000 into more of like a defensive position,
00:59:44.660 but you do you, you know?
00:59:48.100 That's actually interesting.
00:59:49.240 I never thought about it that way,
00:59:50.420 but yeah, if you come up in that defensive position,
00:59:52.780 that like, you know, shoulder width stance,
00:59:55.260 defensive position, three-point stance,
00:59:57.520 where, you know, you hear all these things.
00:59:58.580 That's actually interesting.
