00:00:00.260 Imagine a dam. What is the job of a dam? Hold water. That's it. If a dam is good, it's holding
00:00:07.320 the water. If it's not good, it's not. There are leaks everywhere. It's a problem. Well, that's you.
00:00:12.300 You're the dam. You're the protector. You're the provider. You're the presider. And if you just
00:00:17.420 blab everything that you're going through to anyone who will potentially listen to you,
00:00:22.700 there's all sorts of leaks in your ability to protect and provide and preside. And primarily,
00:00:27.600 most people will begin to think less of you. I don't want you to leak. I don't want you to be
00:00:35.040 a dam that can't do its job, which is to hold up water. Guys, what's going on today? I want to
00:00:42.300 talk with you about a controversial term. It should not be. It's well-defined, but it's a
00:00:47.560 word that conjures up images of, you know, the ideal, the pinnacle of masculinity. But at the
00:00:54.760 same breath, it also conjures up ideas of, of somebody who's kind of weak and timid and cowardly 1.00
00:01:01.300 and pathetic. And I can't help, but wonder why this one word is able to conjure up both sides 0.97
00:01:08.200 of the aisle. And that word is vulnerability. Now, if you've been following us for any amount
00:01:12.700 of time, you know, that that is not one of my favorite words, uh, because it actually has a
00:01:18.700 definition but but as it usually goes you know the marketers get a hold of the word and and tell us
00:01:28.100 it means this when it actually means something else and then it gets conflated it gets misconstrued
00:01:33.660 it often tends to get over feminized and we start to embrace the idea of just being weak for
00:01:41.680 weakness's sake so today i'm going to talk with you about the word vulnerability it's the wrong
00:01:47.460 word. It's, it's not the right word to use. And look, you might say, well, Ryan, you're debating
00:01:52.420 semantics. Yes, I am a little, but I'm also debating concepts. I want to debate with you
00:01:57.720 ideas and we use words to convey ideas. So let's either get on the same page about what the word
00:02:04.540 means, uh, or let's at least get to the root of what the actual issue is because at its core,
00:02:11.540 the way that a lot of people talk about vulnerability is not wrong but when you start
00:02:17.760 hearing from so many people who start talking about being vulnerable for the sake of being
00:02:23.100 vulnerable it actually inhibits your ability to lead to provide to protect to preside over and
00:02:29.840 for the people that you're called to do so so we're going to talk about what vulnerability
00:02:34.780 actually means by definition but we're actually also going to talk about what better words we can
00:02:40.760 use instead of vulnerability and then we're going to talk about the ways that you can use the concept
00:02:47.860 of vulnerability as either something that will serve you and the people you're called to lead
00:02:53.260 or potentially to inhibit you to undermine trust and to make your life harder than it needs to be
00:03:00.720 so let's first and foremost break this down again vulnerability is is the wrong word to use okay
00:03:08.480 vulnerability by definition means that it means weakness that that period vulnerability by
00:03:17.260 definition means weakness susceptible to threat susceptible to injury susceptible to loss and
00:03:25.080 what a lot of people say is the this this idea of like oh men need to be vulnerable
00:03:31.060 who needs to be susceptible to loss?
00:03:34.660 What man needs to be weak?
00:03:37.060 That's not actually what they mean,
00:03:39.100 but they're using that word
00:03:40.300 because it's been co-opted to mean something virtuous.
00:03:44.200 And vulnerability has never been virtuous.
00:03:47.160 It is not a virtuous thing to be vulnerable.
00:03:50.480 I want you to imagine, here's the analogy I've used.
00:03:52.860 Imagine that you are responsible
00:03:55.940 for guarding an ancient castle.
00:03:59.220 You're the king of the kingdom.
00:04:01.060 And you've got this beautiful kingdom, this stone-built kingdom.
00:04:05.620 It's surrounded by 50-foot walls of stone and impenetrable defenses and fortresses around.
00:04:14.260 What you're going to do is if you know that there's threats from the outside world to your kingdom,
00:04:19.720 you are going to look for vulnerabilities so that you can shore those up.
00:04:24.420 You're not trying to actually be vulnerable.
00:04:27.460 You're trying to be the antithesis of vulnerable.
00:04:31.060 you're only looking for those weaknesses so that you can shore them up and if you're using the word
00:04:37.940 vulnerable as a way to shore up your weaknesses i support that i can get behind that if you're
00:04:44.660 using it as a way to gain empathy to gain sympathy to gain pity to gain attention to gain
00:04:54.460 some sort of being being noticed you're you're doing it wrong and people will say well you know
00:05:01.200 nobody's using it like that i beg to differ i beg to differ look how many people on social media
00:05:08.260 will blab about everything they'll literally set up a camera and they'll cry on film in front of
00:05:16.700 a camera about some of life's woes in order to garner attention they're manufacturing weakness
00:05:25.940 not to be strong but to get sympathy and that's antithetical to strength now what is what is a
00:05:34.660 better way to describe vulnerability uh my friend jack donovan often makes the case that it's simply
00:05:42.980 humility and honesty that is the core of what many people say they're they're doing when they
00:05:51.740 express vulnerability is is just simply humility and just simply being honest but the distinction
00:05:59.680 is it is it has to be with purpose right if i'm just blabbing all of my bullcrap on you about
00:06:06.320 woe is me and life is hard and this is what i've gone through and this is what's happened to me
00:06:11.340 how does that serve you honestly guys how does that serve you it doesn't now if you're being
00:06:19.720 honest for example about what life has dealt you if you're being humble about the things that you
00:06:27.420 don't know so that you can shore those things up i wouldn't say you're being vulnerable i actually
00:06:32.420 think you're being strong vulnerability does not require strength and it doesn't even require
00:06:37.460 courage. It doesn't require courage or strength to point out where you're weak. And that's where
00:06:43.060 modern culture gets it wrong. It doesn't. We're problem solving machines. We as men are always
00:06:51.220 looking for something that's wrong. I can have a conversation today. I can have a discussion with
00:06:58.660 a friend. I can look at my bank account. I can look at my body composition. It doesn't take
00:07:05.980 courage to point out the obvious that maybe i'm i'm not as strong as i need to be or maybe i have
00:07:12.880 a few extra pounds i could shed or maybe i have some vices that i can address that doesn't require
00:07:18.840 courage you know what requires courage doing something about it that's where the courage
00:07:24.000 comes in but everybody says oh just being vulnerable is where courage lies no doing
00:07:28.660 something about it is where courage lies there was an interesting study and they showed that
00:07:35.540 those individuals who talk about great future accomplishments on social media actually receive
00:07:42.760 similar dopamine levels and hits as those who actually accomplish the thing so if i jump on
00:07:49.360 on facebook and i say hey guys i'm going to run a marathon this year the overwhelming majority of
00:07:55.960 people on my feed are going to say good job ryan way to go you're amazing you're incredible oh
00:08:02.660 you're so talented and yet i haven't even done anything yet and so we get the praise and the
00:08:12.560 accolades and the same thing is true of vulnerability i had such a hard day today and
00:08:16.700 what do people do oh it's okay you can be strong i believe in you you're you're the best and then
00:08:24.500 you start buying into that narrative you don't actually need to do anything about it because
00:08:29.040 you got everybody to tell you how wonderful you were for not doing anything but where the rubber
00:08:35.720 really meets the road is starting to be humble and starting to be honest so let's talk about
00:08:40.540 humility first humility is just acknowledging that you don't have all the answers and i would
00:08:47.140 also suggest that humility says that you are required to fill in the blanks so if i don't
00:08:54.460 know how to run new technology with our podcast studio, then that's okay. Like that doesn't make
00:09:01.440 me weak. That doesn't make me a loser. That doesn't make me pathetic. That doesn't make me
00:09:05.960 incapable or incompetent. It just means I don't know how to do this yet. And when we're humble
00:09:12.160 about not knowing what we need to do, then we can very simply reach out to somebody who's more
00:09:17.080 qualified to address the things that we're trying to address. So if it's the technology that I'm
00:09:22.400 dealing with and i'm like man i don't know how to hook up this system or work this camera i mean
00:09:27.660 this podcast studio that we just built is a great example of that i could not have done this on my
00:09:32.180 own and i knew that so what do i do just wallow in it and tell people how pathetic i am and how
00:09:38.180 sorry i am for myself and why i can't get ahead and why the good luck goes to all the other people
00:09:43.820 and why you need money to do no i'm not going to do that that's what modern vulnerability would
00:09:48.900 tell you to do just cry about it complain about it when what I'm here to suggest is that we just
00:09:54.640 be humble I don't know how to do this so can I find somebody whether it's a friend a family
00:09:59.200 member an acquaintance a network connection or potentially somebody I need to hire to help me
00:10:05.900 do this and that's what I did I hired Lauren Loretty Hassel Loretty and she does an amazing
00:10:12.060 job of designing studios and interior design so I hired her to help me with this and here's
00:10:17.460 you know, the result. That's just humility. I don't have it all figured out guys. And you don't
00:10:23.940 have it all figured out and it's okay. It doesn't make you weak. It's just a starting point for what
00:10:28.880 you're going to do next. And then the second point is honesty. And honesty is just being truthful
00:10:34.680 with people. I know it can be hard. I know it can be challenging. I'm not here to tell you that I'm
00:10:40.160 always telling 100% of the truth, a hundred percent of the time, because it is, it is scary,
00:10:46.580 right it does pose a risk risk of relationship alienation risk of relationship loss risk of
00:10:53.020 financial loss but we do need to be honest because i think it's important that we operate within the
00:11:01.320 realms of relationship whether it's platonic romantic professional and we allow people to
00:11:08.580 make the decisions that they want to make based on all of the information that they can have
00:11:13.800 because wouldn't you want that if you're in a business partnership and the potential partner
00:11:21.000 you're going into business with has been indicted for fraud i'd want to know that before i start to
00:11:30.620 get into business with this individual if you're in a romantic relationship and you've been
00:11:39.280 unfaithful in the past, I think I would want to know that so I can make that decision as to
00:11:45.920 whether or not I want to engage in a relationship with you. That's a fair request. That's a human
00:11:52.900 request. It's a fair request to ask that people be honest with you, which means that if you want
00:11:58.640 them to be honest with you about these important topics, then you need to be honest with them.
00:12:03.660 And you also need to be honest with yourself. Where are you falling short? Where are you weak?
00:12:09.280 where could you use some areas of improvement where could you shore your life up you know i
00:12:15.460 know i know guys who won't even they literally won't jump on us on a scale because they know
00:12:20.880 how overweight they are i i understand the desire not to jump on the scale
00:12:28.340 but i would argue that if you don't deal in reality you can't really improve i know men
00:12:36.400 who won't pull up their bank account statements
00:12:38.180 because they're worried about how far in the black they are
00:12:40.820 or in the red they are, excuse me.
00:12:44.560 Okay, that's a problem.
00:12:47.240 You have to deal in reality.
00:12:50.240 And that's where courage comes in. 1.00
00:12:53.600 Okay, again, it doesn't take courage to blab all your crap 0.99
00:12:56.660 because everybody around you is gonna pat you on the back 0.99
00:12:59.360 and tell you how wonderful they are.
00:13:00.700 There's no alienation and vulnerability anymore.
00:13:02.840 i mean it used to be that we had guilt and we had shame and we didn't always feel like we were
00:13:11.640 living up to our ideals and we had accountability i mean i remember that growing up in the 90s
00:13:17.040 and late 80s i remember being on a football team or a baseball team and missing an assignment or
00:13:24.140 missing a block or missing a play and getting reamed by my my fellow players not in hate or
00:13:31.400 hostility, but come on, like we expect the best of you. But that attitude of expecting the best
00:13:38.700 from you has gone by the wayside and been replaced with, it's okay. I know you're going through a
00:13:44.040 hard time. I know you're struggling with these things. I know you're dealing with this. I know
00:13:48.220 you're dealing with that. And many of the men's movements that have sprouted up all over the
00:13:51.400 place. And I've actually kind of done a deep dive into this lately. There's a lot of very popular
00:13:56.660 men's movements but when you actually dive deep into these men's movements they're primarily
00:14:03.100 supported not by men but by women it's very interesting you can go look a lot a lot of viral
00:14:08.740 clips and see that there's a lot of these men's movements and women are the only ones supporting
00:14:15.120 them i mean i'm i've made posts over the past several weeks about lindsey clancy and about
00:14:21.820 this cornell seven and whenever people dissent it's either very effeminate men or women who are
00:14:31.980 are making the case against what i'm saying which is interesting because the real men that they're
00:14:38.200 claiming that they want to either be or be with are not resonating with the language because it
00:14:46.300 is weak it is timid it is cowardly it is justification rationalization for underperformance
00:14:53.340 and we as men who want to be the best won't do it now look i'm not here to tell you that you can't 0.76
00:15:00.180 express where you're weak and inadequate again that's this this is the nuance and i know people
00:15:05.080 are going to pull out snippets and quotes i had a guy do this the other day pulled out one little
00:15:09.920 cherry pick quote and told me that i contradicted myself number one i do all the time because
00:15:15.620 I'm a human being and we have new thoughts that pop into our head based on new information
00:15:21.080 so if I never contradicted myself that would be weird and number two if you don't look at the
00:15:27.400 nuance of the situation then it's easy to say well those are contradictory terms but you got
00:15:32.220 to look at the nuance so I'm not telling you that you shouldn't be aware of where you're inadequate
00:15:37.100 but I'm telling you that you should not do it for the sake of doing it because I don't want to pat
00:15:43.580 you on the back is some virtuous, noble action of just blabbing and crying about all the things
00:15:49.900 that you're dealing with. I want you to be humble as I do. I want you to be honest as I do want to
00:15:57.580 be honest as well. So what's the distinction between the two? Well, the distinction is simply
00:16:02.700 discernment. It's discernment. If I jump on social media and I post to my literally hundreds of
00:16:09.560 thousands of followers on youtube and instagram and facebook and tiktok and all the places
00:16:13.820 i could garner a lot of attention a lot of attention brian you're doing a great job you're
00:16:20.640 doing well you got this brother we believe in you and yet that doesn't move me to being the
00:16:26.540 better man that i want to be and that i'm capable of becoming discernment on the other hand is that
00:16:33.320 i'm going to be humble when i realize there's opportunities for growth and i'm also going to
00:16:38.080 be honest with the people who have deserved who deserve and who have earned the right to my honesty
00:16:43.320 these are the people who are closest to you it's your wife if it's your kids it's business partners
00:16:52.820 it's clients and i ask myself two very simple questions number one does this person care about
00:17:02.020 me. If they don't pass that test, I don't need to move any further. Because anything they say,
00:17:10.460 whether it's true or not, anything they say will always be taken with a grain of salt.
00:17:14.600 The question is, does this person care about me deeply? Do they want me to win?
00:17:20.640 If they pass that test, I go to the second question. Are they right? Objectively, is that
00:17:26.900 true i had a close friend who um said to me hey ryan you have a reputation for being one of these
00:17:35.380 guys who just chases bright and shiny objects which in some context is is right in some context
00:17:41.400 it's not but the first litmus test is is this does this person care about me the answer was
00:17:46.520 absolutely this has been an individual who's been with me for almost 10 years he's been an
00:17:53.740 outspoken advocate of the work we're doing with order of man he's challenged me in frustrating
00:17:59.380 but often productive ways but this is an individual who cares about me so he passed the first test
00:18:04.540 the second test is he right now on the surface i might say well i'm not i don't do that because
00:18:09.680 look at all these other things i did where i'm not doing that but if i stood and examined it for a
00:18:14.960 minute i was like yeah that that's actually a fair critique in certain aspects of my life
00:18:19.480 and so that's an individual that i can be a little more discerning with that i can that i can talk
00:18:25.260 about my humility where i need to learn new things what i need to figure out that i can be honest
00:18:33.640 about the things i'm struggling with the things i'm dealing with because that's a person who will
00:18:37.920 stand by you it's a brother in arms and that's what men need more i think than anything else in
00:18:44.280 life that we are severely lacking is a brother in arms somebody who's also wearing armor somebody
00:18:52.260 who's also engaged in the battle of life somebody's raising kids and building a family and starting a
00:18:57.340 business and paying taxes paying off debt doing all the things that we do as men and yet when
00:19:03.580 we're alone we can take the armor off for a minute and say hey bro how are you how was the day what
00:19:10.160 did you deal with what happened what are you struggling with hey how can i help you in that
00:19:15.160 in that area let's go train let's go do this let's learn new skills let me pour into you
00:19:20.200 those are the kind of people that you should express if we're going to use the term
00:19:25.460 vulnerability with not just every rando on the street or any random person on facebook
00:19:31.340 because a number one they don't care about you and number two you have no way to tell
00:19:36.480 whether or not what they're saying is true so if we're going to express humility and honesty
00:19:44.620 then the first step is exercising discernment
00:19:47.680 and in order to achieve discernment or in order to allow them access to your world and that's
00:19:58.860 essentially what we're doing we're giving people we're giving people the skeleton key 0.54
00:20:03.040 to our deepest secrets all your vices your inadequacies your incompetencies and you're
00:20:10.700 saying here i trust you with this key guard it with your life now if that individual if you
00:20:18.200 think that individual is going to take that key and go down to the local ace hardware store and
00:20:23.080 make clones of the key and give it to every random person on the on the street you probably
00:20:28.580 wouldn't share your treasure but if you give it to a person and you know hey this is a person who
00:20:36.500 loves me they care about me they have my best interest at heart they're going to be honest
00:20:40.080 with me they've proven time and time again they've they've built trust with me they've they've been
00:20:45.280 credible they've been there when i've needed them and so i trust them with this key and that's a
00:20:51.140 beautiful thing because now we have two people to protect the treasure right we have ourselves
00:20:56.380 I have to protect the treasure that I offer.
00:20:58.580 And then we have another person who says, hey, look, here's, and I'm using the word
00:21:02.640 vulnerability in the truest sense of the word.
00:21:04.980 A person might come to you and say, hey, Joe, you're lacking in this department.
00:21:10.900 You're vulnerable, dare I say, vulnerable in that department.
00:21:14.480 And so let's fix this, this, this, this, and this.
00:21:18.420 That's somebody who's earned my trust.
00:21:20.300 And you have to earn my trust before you get access to what's inside.
00:21:26.380 so the alternative guys is that it's not that we won't be vulnerable in the way that people
00:21:36.200 mean it again you might say i'm just debating semantics yes it is just a potential word choice
00:21:43.100 you might listen to this podcast and say well ryan you're just talking about the way i define
00:21:47.200 vulnerability cool no problem i have no issue with that you're just choosing to use a different
00:21:53.400 word than I do, or I'm choosing to use a different word or two words to explain what you mean.
00:21:59.920 And that's fine. I have no issue with that. But what I do want to say, whether you use the word
00:22:05.720 vulnerable or humility and honesty, is that if you don't do this properly, there's one of two
00:22:15.520 things that are going to happen. And this is the biggest danger. It's the threat to you. It's the
00:22:19.840 threat to your family, your kids, your wife, your colleagues, your co-workers, our communities.
00:22:25.360 One of two things happen if we don't do this properly. This is the most important thing I
00:22:29.320 want you to take away from this. Number one is we will isolate ourselves. We'll wall ourselves off.
00:22:36.460 We'll put ourselves on an island. We'll pretend like we're special or unique or different,
00:22:42.620 that nobody else understands us that nobody else gets us i did this when i went through my divorce
00:22:50.100 and i act as acted as if i was the first person in history to go through a divorce to lose
00:22:56.420 my family that's crazy millions and millions of men have gone through the exact exact same
00:23:05.580 experience that i have and yet i told myself that i was unique or i was different or i was special
00:23:13.280 and no one would get it no one would understand no one was on my side well that wasn't true
00:23:19.020 and because i was not willing to be humble with the right people using discernment and honest
00:23:25.360 about my situation i walled myself off to opportunities i walled myself off to growth
00:23:33.540 i walled myself off to insight that would have been very advantageous as i was on my own self
00:23:41.040 development growth journey over the past three and a half now almost four years
00:23:44.700 and i made myself weaker more vulnerable by not expressing myself to those people who had earned
00:23:54.200 the trust required to express myself so that's scenario number one if you don't do this right
00:23:58.920 is that you just wall yourself off scenario number two is you just leak everywhere
00:24:05.660 everywhere imagine a dam what is the job of a dam to hold water that's it if a dam is good
00:24:18.340 it's holding the water if it's not good it's not and there's leaks everywhere and it creates a
00:24:22.760 problem. Well, that's you. You're the dam. You're the protector. You're the provider. You're the
00:24:29.400 presider. And if you just blab everything that you're going through to anyone who will potentially
00:24:34.920 listen to you, there's all sorts of leaks in your ability to protect and provide and preside. And
00:24:40.800 primarily, most people will begin to think less of you. I know men who I care for, I love, I want
00:24:51.940 them to win but they will crumble literally crump disintegrate at the slightest sign of adversity
00:25:00.740 i don't want them to do that i want them to be strong i want them to be resilient i want them
00:25:07.400 to be tough i want them to figure out how to deal with all of life's woes whether it's just a hard
00:25:13.200 day at the office or a wife who might be upset or kids who are dealing with something or financial
00:25:18.940 hardship or a lawsuit or a medical diagnosis. I mean, I've been an advocate for men standing up
00:25:24.760 and holding frame for 11 years. I don't want you to leak. I don't want you to be a dam that can't
00:25:32.300 do its job, which is to hold up water. And I don't want you to be the kind of man whose kids can't
00:25:38.580 look at him with a level of respect. I don't want you to be the man whose wife continues to look at
00:25:45.500 him and then gets involved in some sort of other emotionally charged relationship with another man
00:25:53.800 because she doesn't feel connected to you because you're just blabbing and crying all the time about
00:25:58.260 what's going on now i'm not saying you being vulnerable necessarily leads to that but i'm
00:26:04.440 saying it could it could if you start to believe as modern culture would tell you that you just
00:26:11.660 have to tell everybody you're all of your life's problems no you don't you have to share those
00:26:18.700 things with the people you trust the people who will tell you the truth and the people who offer
00:26:24.840 insight and resources to help you overcome those things that's my take on vulnerability i'm a little
00:26:31.280 softer on the word than i was in the past because i know what a lot of people mean but there's still
00:26:35.300 a large contingent of individuals who believe that vulnerability as a virtue means you just
00:26:40.700 blab everything to everybody. That's not what it means. It never has. It never will. I choose to
00:26:46.980 use instead the words humility and honesty. Now, if you say those mean the same thing to me,
00:26:52.080 cool. No problem. We're on the same page. Use that word all you want. But what I really wanted
00:26:58.360 to do is I wanted to get to the root of what we're talking about here, which is humility and honesty.
00:27:04.740 And if you're doing those things with discernment, building trust with those you love,
00:27:10.540 those who care about you and those who want to serve you, then I think you're doing it right.
00:27:14.160 And you can use whatever word you want to use. It doesn't matter to me. Now, guys, the reason I
00:27:18.860 bring a lot of this up is because we're doing an order of man war room. And a war room is us
00:27:27.200 getting together on Wednesday, October 14th at 8 p.m. Eastern. And we're talking about concepts
00:27:34.560 like this where you'll be able to ask questions. We bring in guest experts. We talk about particular

00:27:51.200 as a man in your life and we talk about vulnerability in a kind of a different way
00:27:57.900 so there's some more nuance to what i'm going to share with you on october 14th but we also
00:28:02.280 we're also going to be talking about feeling the whole the feeling of being powerless
00:28:06.280 uh the feeling of being um irrelevant the feeling of being exposed that's where vulnerability comes
00:28:17.160 in so we're going to be talking about these five fears that every man is dealing with and what
00:28:22.500 specifically he can do to overcome the feelings that he's having so that he can charge forward
00:28:28.320 in hope and optimism and growth not scarcity and falling behind so if you want to check that out
00:28:34.660 head over to war excuse me order of man.com slash war room all one word order man.com slash war room

00:29:06.900 Fine. We have nothing to discuss. We're on the same page. Cool. But if you have a differing
00:29:11.980 opinion, perspective, idea, insight, great. Let me know. And let's have a healthy, honest
