00:08:49.900 today's topic is HPV human papillomavirus which in my opinion is the most misunderstood STI
00:08:58.160 HPV is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection and almost everybody who has ever been
00:09:05.700 sexually active in their life will be exposed to it at one point or another.
00:09:09.780 Now there are hundreds of different strands of HPV and about 40 different
00:09:15.880 types that affect the genitals and throat and that we consider to be
00:09:19.200 sexually transmitted in nature. Now even plantar warts on the bottom of your
00:09:23.520 feet that you can get during a hot yoga class can be HPV. So not every form of
00:09:28.680 HPV is sexually transmitted. This video is going to discuss the 40 or so types
00:09:33.660 that are. Those strands of HPV that can affect the genitals and the throat are stratified into
00:09:39.660 high-risk strands and low-risk strands. Low-risk strands are more likely to cause things like
00:09:46.180 genital warts or anal warts, which are not pleasant, but they're not necessarily harmful
00:09:51.540 to your health. The high-risk strands of HPV are the ones that can lead to cancer, various types
00:09:58.540 of cancers, cervical cancers, penile cancers, anal cancer, vulvar cancer, and various head and neck
00:10:05.560 cancers, including esophageal cancer, tonsil and tongue cancer. Now here's the thing, your immune
00:10:12.180 system can clear HPV on its own. And in fact, the vast majority of HPV infections are cleared by the
00:10:19.420 body on its own. Only sometimes will those HPV infections go on to cause cancer. And it's more
00:10:25.920 likely in people who are immune compromised, such as those with uncontrolled HIV. So how is HPV
00:10:31.600 transmitted? It's transmitted via skin-to-skin contact, so you don't even necessarily have to
00:10:37.000 be partaking in penetrative sexual activity to contract it. It can be transmitted through all
00:10:42.900 forms of sexual activity and also through fingers, hands, heavy petting, touching, that kind of thing.
00:10:49.200 So what do we do with this information? You want to make sure that you're always on top of your HPV
00:10:53.760 related cancer screening so for folks with a cervix that is a cervical pap smear to screen
00:10:59.280 for cervical cancer and for anyone of any gender who is sexually active in the butt you also want
00:11:05.680 to be getting anal pap smears which are less common less known about but super important so
00:11:10.960 talk to your provider about that if it applies to you i also strongly recommend getting the hpv
00:11:17.680 vaccine. It's called Gardasil, and it protects against the nine strains of HPV that are the
00:11:24.360 most likely to cause cancer. So you can still get HPV even if you've gotten the Gardasil vaccine,
00:11:30.040 but you're less likely to get a strain that will go on to cause cancer. So even if you have
00:11:36.040 previously been diagnosed with HPV, even if it's a high-risk strain in the past, still get that
00:11:41.600 vaccine, as there's some evidence that it can actually also help clear existing HPV. HPV is
00:11:48.240 tricky. It's often misunderstood. So if you have any questions about it, drop them in my comments.

00:14:57.460 on its own but it's so if she was testing positive that means she had um like the it had taken the
00:15:06.100 next step i think anyways it had taken the next step from being just like a positive test it like
00:15:15.300 the cells must have been different i think oh i went in for this procedure i still hadn't told
00:15:24.260 my mom or any of my friends and most importantly i hadn't told matt yeah so she was throwing it
00:15:32.180 back with hpv and not telling anybody this is why this is why i keep telling you guys uh i'm
