00:26:28.240 would share the pearls of wisdom i've acquired during my months in my home on wheels if you're

00:26:34.160 you're thinking about living in a car by choice, then read on. This is all of the wisdom I've

00:26:38.440 gained from my time living in my car. Why live in a car by choice? This is a valid question and

00:26:46.600 everyone will likely have a different set of reasons. I'll share my personal rationale with

00:26:52.120 the hopes that you can discover your own. The number one reason for me is money. I really don't

00:26:57.480 make that much of it. And I have other financial priorities in life beyond just paying the landlord

00:27:03.160 an electric company. When I've previously rented apartments, most of my paycheck would go to bills

00:27:09.120 and there would hardly be any leftover for the things I actually cared about.

00:27:14.020 I'm trying to get my student loans paid off and travel the world.

00:27:17.620 I have to get creative to make that happen because getting a $1 an hour raise once a year isn't

00:27:23.920 helping. Being able to travel and hike is my main priority in life. You know how they say like

00:27:31.060 women rank men seventh in their priorities and you're like what could they put above men 1.00

00:27:35.460 hiking yep since moving into my car in january i've gotten to explore about 10 different states

00:27:42.080 and make two international trips it would have been financially difficult to make all of these

00:27:47.240 trips happen if i had to pay rent and utilities this is a big way to readjust my present priorities

00:27:54.220 in order to achieve my long-term goals i feel more motivated to get things done in the morning and i

00:27:59.820 wake up and make some coffee on the hood of my car. I feel ready to start my day and get out

00:28:04.820 into the world. When I used to have an apartment, it would often take me hours to feel motivated to

00:28:10.240 leave and seize the day. It's much easier to make things happen when I'm already sitting in the

00:28:15.120 driver's seat, literally and metaphorically. Now that we've established the why of living in my

00:28:20.260 car by choice, let's move on to the how. Oh God. Guys, I promise you ladies, this is not

00:28:27.660 all it's cracked up to be okay but we'll we'll we'll follow this train of thought

00:28:33.660 all right use what you have and get it organized get a setup that you like one of the main purposes

00:28:43.580 of living in your car is to save money so don't go buy a new sprinter van find a way to make it

00:28:49.220 work with what you've got so you have a small car can you take out the back seats or open up the

00:28:54.500 trunk into the front. Problem solved. If you have a truck, then get a camper cover so you can live

00:28:59.180 out of the back. If you have an SUV like me, just fold the back seats forward. Consider building a

00:29:06.440 platform in your car. You can sleep on top of it and have extra storage space below. I never built

00:29:13.060 one because I don't have the tools for it or the know-how. Also, I like being able to sit all the

00:29:17.740 way up when I'm hanging out in my car. Platforms usually stop you from being able to do that.

00:29:22.260 sleeping arrangements get yourself something to sleep on i just use the same inflatable

00:29:27.800 sleeping bed that i use for backpacking and camping another good option is to buy a memory

00:29:33.700 foam pad don't forget your pillow you'll probably want some aspect of privacy while sleeping in your

01:21:06.840 like what stage you are in your life and i have to acknowledge with this all this instability talk

01:21:12.040 some people all of this sounds like a nightmare but for some others all of this sounds kind of

01:21:17.080 dare I say fun. And Nick and I are some of those people that kind of want constant change. But

01:21:23.240 after some time certain others want to plant roots and have more of a stable lifestyle as they move

01:21:28.360 into the next chapter of their lives. Whether that means kids, new job, a new project, or whatever

01:21:32.760 that may be. Now to be quite honest for the two of us, for Nick and I, stability isn't what we're

01:21:37.520 looking for. And the real reason that we're quitting van life is that we are actually kind

01:21:42.440 of bored. I just want to like rewind and say that we've been living in this van for two and a half

01:21:45.760 years. That is longer than I have lived in any one home in my adult life. Van life can become

01:21:51.200 kind of boring with the repetitive nature of daily routines within a small living space and chores

01:21:56.140 or van life chores, such as filling up water, doing laundry at a laundromat, finding a shower,

01:22:01.840 loading up groceries more often because your fridge is so tiny, and other things like this,

01:22:05.580 like they do take a lot of time. Limited access to amends such as showers can get tiring and the

01:22:10.180 lack of privacy and the constant need for upkeep and constant organization. I mean, it can all just

01:22:15.140 become really tedious. And don't even get me started on trips to the mechanic, okay? That's

01:22:18.940 a whole other topic. I could make a whole video just on trips to the mechanic. And what was fun

01:22:22.940 and exciting to learn for us at one point in time just simply isn't our dream anymore. And all of

01:22:28.640 that brings me to the main reason why I think that people are quitting van life. Now, before van life,

01:22:34.620 and if you were a subscriber of this channel at this time, then you are a real OG because it feels

01:22:39.020 like it was forever ago now. Nick and I were international travelers. We traveled with nothing

01:22:42.920 but backpacks. And while we did buy our van in 2019 pre-pandemic, we did build it out in 2020.
