00:01:02.460 there as well other times when you tune in later on this week we will have uh cruise the internet

00:01:08.320 that is our current events show it's where we take the news of the day we put some headlines up on the

00:01:13.560 screen we talk about them we talk about what may be true what may not be true and we make fun of the 0.99

00:01:18.520 idiots that believe everything these people say and uh we have a good time doing it that's cti uh 0.99

00:01:24.560 and then other times we have real talk real talk is just five to twenty minutes of me giving you a 1.00

00:01:28.120 message that i think uh you know i want to share with you guys so uh we do things a little bit

00:01:33.680 differently here in the advertising area too you'll notice that i don't read ads i don't take money from

00:01:39.060 people who uh pay me to talk about the shit that i don't use uh in exchange for not taking up 30 0.98

00:01:46.280 minutes of your podcasting time running ads about useless shit that you don't want to buy anyway 0.98

00:01:51.620 just ask something really simple and it's this pay the fee when i say pay the fee it means share the 0.97

00:01:56.580 show our show has remained at the top of the ranks of itunes and spotify and all these different places

00:02:02.460 for almost a decade entirely off value exchange word of mouth that's how i like to do it if we do good

00:02:09.040 share the show if we don't do good don't share the show it's very simple concept so if you gain

00:02:14.760 something from this show which i'm very very confident that you will on this particular show

00:02:19.120 uh please share it and that's that's the fee now we do have a very special guest on the show

00:02:25.480 actually we've got two special guests uh one of them is not sal

00:02:28.980 i can make it more awkward just sit here in silence yeah one of them's definitely not sal

00:02:37.700 well i mean i'm welcome back how that's my welcome back

00:02:40.260 dr sal yeah there's dr sal holiday and express last night yeah i'm ready to rock

00:02:44.860 so we got sal but we also have a very very good friend of ours jason mccarthy who is the founder

00:02:51.100 and ceo of go ruck uh you guys might know go ruck it's the weighted backpack event organization

00:02:57.460 it's been around since 2008 changed hundreds of thousands of people's lives uh very very excited to

00:03:03.780 have you here on the show man how are you i'm good man it's great to be back first form yeah it's

00:03:08.160 great to have you here uh jason's been here a number of times but this is the first time he's

00:03:12.040 been on the show um he likes to tag me in the go ruck videos and tell all of us doing 75 hard

00:03:18.780 that we're a bunch of pussies for not using rucks so i figured in the sense i'm starting 75 hard today 0.87

00:03:26.120 and i committed to jason to you guys that for outdoor cardio i'm gonna ruck the entire 75 hard 0.98

00:03:33.720 um and i'd like you guys to join me if you guys don't have a ruck bag we sell them at first form

00:03:39.220 uh you can order them from jason they're awesome bags and put a weight in them and it makes your

00:03:44.140 cardio quite a bit harder go rock.com yeah so that's how about that for so that's the show great show

00:03:50.020 guys yeah so dude um you know you you're dude you built a tremendous business you've had an amazing

00:03:59.040 life story uh you're from ohio let's just start you know how you grew up and and how you know your

00:04:05.400 story your personal story about where you came from yes i'm from you know back in the midwest it's

00:04:11.020 it's got a the air is nice here right even in february yeah it is um from southern ohio and

00:04:16.640 dayton my my mom was 18 when she had me my my dad was not too much older than that and you know that

00:04:23.600 caused some some waves in the family as you might imagine and but ultimately you know the the dust

00:04:29.920 sort of settled i i moved with just my mom because i got divorced to uh to gainesville where my mom was

00:04:35.820 on a full tennis scholarship all that stuff the interesting thing about that is i was became the

00:04:40.240 unofficial mascot of the women's tennis team at the university of florida go gators from the ages of

00:04:45.700 about you know three to six let's say something like that and you know i was gonna say if you

00:04:51.840 were like in your 20s that doesn't sound terrible sounds better right yeah way better yeah i'm like

00:04:57.460 how'd you do this tell me the story but uh but yeah but you know bounced around a lot as a kid

00:05:02.480 which kind of is there's a lot of adversity baked into that that wasn't the easiest thing ever when

00:05:08.640 your mom's 18 years older than you are and you know i love my mom to death love my dad to death still

00:05:13.780 great relationships all around my grandparents were really inspirational all that stuff um we

00:05:19.160 moved to florida and i mean to kind of get to more of the meat on the bone like graduated from high

00:05:24.180 school in 97 same as you and then 2001 graduated college and really didn't know what i wanted to do

00:05:32.100 with my life that's may of 2001 and you know i it's it's really easy for me to look out at the world

00:05:38.740 now and see a lot of people it's like what should i do with my life you know and and i think that was

00:05:42.800 i don't ever want to forget how kind of terrifying that was you know and for for my vantage point

00:05:49.320 unluckily what happened was was 9 11 and so that was kind of just a a call to arms for me and it

00:05:56.240 changed the course of of my life on out of tragedy came this desire to serve our country so um that was

00:06:03.900 not a natural thing right like we're definitely going to war what should i do as as part of that i knew

00:06:10.480 what i needed to do but that didn't that didn't make it easy so you know it took two by i eventually

00:06:17.000 enlisted in october of uh 2003 so it took you know a couple years to finally but you felt called right

00:06:25.260 away immediately yeah immediately and and so the first casualty of the war was a guy named mike span

00:06:32.120 who had been a uh he was in the marine corps but what got published was this is the johnny walker

00:06:37.800 the taliban uprising and at the prison there and um what was talked about was that he was in the

00:06:45.240 special activities division of of the cia so i was like okay great i'm gonna go do that that's the guy

00:06:50.720 i want to be you know because choose your roles role models you know carefully and that's who i wanted

00:06:56.480 to be which is an odd thing you know i mean someone dies they die a hero and you say send me i want to go

00:07:02.640 do that you know but that that's just where it was for me and i'm not alone in this there was you know

00:07:07.840 long lines at recruiting stations and all that and and so went through the cia process and i kept

00:07:15.360 asking about you know how do i do that that's what i want to do and finally this guy we're in this you

00:07:21.040 know arlington or northern virginia like you know those nondescript cia type buildings that you can

00:07:28.540 imagine and you know you're having my the 10th one-on-one conversation in the multi-year process

00:07:34.620 that was the cia um hiring process and he's like look we don't just bring guys off the street to do

00:07:42.620 this we take them from special operations and then they come here and then they do that and i'm like

00:07:47.120 all right that makes a lot more sense now right i guess i gotta go back and do that it's like this 0.80

00:07:53.580 huge reset and i basically felt like a total idiot and a total failure because at the same time then

00:08:00.500 i started to get doubt creeping in like okay do i really want to do this do i because the cia seems

00:08:06.840 also kind of safer then hey i want to go beyond the ground force into like what really pushed it was the

00:08:14.640 the invasion into to baghdad i mean i signed up i wanted to go to afghanistan that's what i wanted i

00:08:19.000 wanted to be on the team hunting and killing bin laden and and um you know and then but once the 1.00

00:08:25.660 iraq stuff kicked off i was like man these wars are passing me by and most importantly i will regret

00:08:31.140 this for the rest of my life if i don't do this so it didn't necessarily i mean yes service is a great

00:08:37.720 thing and the country depends upon all different kinds of service we get we could talk about that

00:08:42.280 for days but ultimately what mattered the most was the voice inside my head i need to go and do this

00:08:47.660 and if i don't i will regret it for the rest of my life and so made it through and made it through

00:08:52.560 the decision i should say to to enlist in the army in a time of war and um started that process and it

00:08:59.600 was it was a very very challenging one how was it like go because this is not a life path that you

00:09:06.340 saw yourself living before this happened so how was it like just saying you know okay i'm joining the

00:09:12.620 army like you know the first day you're there what's you know it's kind of like a shock right

00:09:16.120 well i mean it was it was terrifying in a lot of a lot of ways i mean there was the whole i did this

00:09:22.800 and i'm a man and i'm a grown-up and i can do this and then there's the reality of telling my mom in her

00:09:29.140 kitchen that i had done this and the tears and the no and the how do we get out of this type of

00:09:35.260 not really what she wanted but you know that's a mother's god gave her the right to that reaction 0.97

00:09:41.300 yeah for sure you know and like that casts a little bit more doubt into it and my mother became

00:09:47.300 one of my biggest supporters of of course and always has been but that's just a a really really

00:09:53.280 difficult conversation to have right and and so there was it's the delayed program so i had a little

00:09:59.540 bit of time and before i go in of course finally what year is that like eight years later after

00:10:07.420 you know i met met emily in 95 say and this is 2003 i finally told the girl that i loved her

00:10:13.720 right in after i had enlisted but there's a delay but from when you go in so i have a few months

00:10:20.340 like so you know i got to tell mom i've enlisted the family's got to find out i got to make the sort

00:10:24.980 of rounds about you know well why are you doing this like what's what's going on tell the girl

00:10:29.900 that i love her finally i mean and we had gone to the same high school together we graduated together

00:10:34.700 she was on the girls tennis team i was on the guys tennis team and she babysat my siblings when i was

00:10:39.580 visiting my dad in ohio over the so like i was just a total coward is really what it boiled down to

00:10:45.100 and but you know you make this one thing and you start to contemplate your own mortality which is a

00:10:50.700 great thing to do and it's like i got to get this off my chest for sure and so then i've got that

00:10:56.620 sort of swirling around in my head at the same time and then it's like okay get on the bus up to fort

00:11:02.700 benning here you go it's going to be awesome and and so you bring everybody brings all their baggage

00:11:08.560 with them everywhere they go right there no matter where you go there you are and i'm at basic training

00:11:13.860 and you know it was it's just turned into a cold georgia winter it was a lot harder than i expected

00:11:20.860 you know i'm like this college kid i'm smart and all this stuff asks me i'll i'll tell you and nobody

00:11:26.080 cares yeah nobody cares man and it's so great you're just there and there's there's a thing going on and

00:11:32.740 you're gonna you're gonna deal with it and so it started there it evolved to airborne school i'm still

00:11:37.680 writing letters to emily and to my mom and basic training all the things and the hardest part was

00:11:44.640 not the physical stuff the hardest part was not that it was just the the you don't always be leery

00:11:52.680 of the people that say i'm gonna go do this hard thing in order to find myself right like it can be

00:11:58.500 a gateway to that but just doing the hard thing is not like oh i'm gonna go backpack in europe for six

00:12:04.640 months and find myself that is not how it works no it's not it's not like it's going to be worse

00:12:10.800 it's going to be a lot harder than if you have a degree of confidence but when you're younger you have

00:12:16.560 to do these things i mean when you're older too but when you're younger in your formative years

00:12:20.520 you got to get out there and say send me and you go try these things and and you know give them

00:12:26.200 give them your all and pour your heart into it and it becomes easy to pour your heart into the army

00:12:31.380 when you're there and you've got to be there you might as well succeed because failure is way worse

00:12:35.840 than success and you're you're there there's there's no other option and so but it's just processing this

00:12:42.020 whole this whole build up in in my own head of i'm probably gonna die i'm probably going to my mom

00:12:50.380 was right to cry in the kitchen and and and you know try get me out of this and you know this girl 1.00

00:12:56.200 that i love that i'm now dating right i'm probably gonna turn her into a widow i mean just all these

00:13:03.100 things they're not productive at all right but the beauty is is that learning how to take those on and

00:13:10.900 and to deal with them there's some perspective that comes from that like this isn't all about me

00:13:15.560 there are worse things than dying it's going to come eventually you know there's and and it just

00:13:21.860 really sort of you know i signed up for revenge and that was a powerful motivator i mean hate is

00:13:27.820 a powerful motivator right it it just cannot endure and it's not healthy it can't endure it's definitely

00:13:34.760 a temporary motivation it will get you it's like you can get all souped up on 500 energy drinks you're

00:13:40.560 just going to pay for it yeah in a different way like you can't do that right yeah forever and build

00:13:45.720 whatever it is that you can't even do it in business like no like in business like you know when

00:13:50.940 you're when you're first starting out a business it's natural to look at the people you're competitive 0.85

00:13:54.120 with and think i want to fucking smash them but what happens when you smash them all and there's 0.98

00:13:58.560 nobody else to smash now what what are you going to do yeah drink more energy drinks yeah that's right 0.98

00:14:03.260 it's it doesn't work like that it's temporary yeah and so revenge was a very very powerful motivator

00:14:09.960 but you know the the special forces qualification course was for me was over two years long the whole

00:14:15.320 kind of basic training airborne school and then it starts there's selection and there's phase two and

00:14:20.020 all these all these different things that go into becoming a green beret and what they teach you is

00:14:26.720 that it's not about you they teach you a lot they teach you how to teach yourself really um but it's

00:14:34.300 like it's just what it became about especially when i got to my team and especially when it was just about

00:14:40.420 them you hear all this stuff about i wasn't fighting for america and i was fighting for the guy next to

00:14:46.200 me in the fox so it's it's all true it's not that you don't love america you love america more than

00:14:51.220 more than you're willing to die for america but it's not about that it's not like man i'm just you

00:14:57.060 know they're shooting they're shooting at us and like gosh i just love america so i'm gonna shoot

00:15:01.320 like that's that's not how it works you know and in service to that mission and loyal to that mission

00:15:10.300 of the guys around me that i mean they're the reason why i'm still alive they're the reason why

00:15:15.080 you know there was a lot of tough love and but they're the reason why i they shaped me so greatly

00:15:21.900 and it was it was transformative in my life to the point where i feel like now all i do is i just oh

00:15:28.080 i'm just trying to pay it forward a little bit more every single day because when you're on a team

00:15:32.880 you wake up and every day there's this feeling of just probably not good enough to be here i better

00:15:39.060 really work my ass off to be average on this team because if i don't there's just this enormous fear 0.98

00:15:45.040 of failure aka they're gonna throw my shit out in the hallway and say get off our team or the team 0.99

00:15:51.100 sergeant would say get off my team or there's just someone's gonna get killed and that's gonna be my 0.99

00:15:55.460 fault and and and so it's just iron sharpens iron and you're just in that environment and that's what

00:16:00.860 it is and and that's that's my definition of service is how that feels when you're in that

00:16:06.800 kind of an environment you're willing to push yourself for something greater than yourself

00:16:11.580 how much do you think all of these things that you learn have carried over to your business which

00:16:18.380 has become wildly successful it's inseparable i mean it's it's it's a factual statement that go

00:16:25.540 ruck would not exist without my time in the army or specifically special forces i mean

00:16:30.500 just technically i mean rucking is the foundation of special forces training it's not what you see

00:16:36.300 on discovery channel about you know log pt and people yelling at you it's silence except that

00:16:42.180 rucksack is it's given you a lot of lessons you know you're you're you're in the pine forest of

00:16:48.860 north carolina first by yourself they want to make sure that you can operate autonomously you're not

00:16:53.780 scared of the dark and stuff right and the first spiders and all the cobwebs that you're you are all over

00:16:59.660 your face the first time you do land land navigation which oh by the way that that's definitely going

00:17:04.400 to happen um that you're not going to run away scared or quit or suck your thumb in the corner or 0.60

00:17:09.100 whatever it might be but then it's about you know the the rucksacks get heavier but the demands on

00:17:14.440 your role on the team do you play well with others right it's just this kind of evolution to okay

00:17:20.380 you know phase one basically individual a little bit of team week thrown in phase two

00:17:25.220 was uh like our version of ranger school it's very doctrinal okay so by that i mean you learn how

00:17:31.640 to do ambushes and you learn how to do raids it's all doctrine you have to know doctrine in order to

00:17:36.220 know how to do you know unconventional stuff you have to learn conventional stuff faith space three

00:17:42.000 was your job so for me it was radios and computers and stuff more more technical with a lot of pt thrown

00:17:47.860 in like pt physical training is the love language better be good at right phase four which is probably the

00:17:54.280 most interesting training i think going is they turn an enormous portion of north carolina into

00:18:01.180 this live war game it's called robin sage and it tests your ability to think on your feet to adapt

00:18:06.120 to be unconventional in nature and it's an evolution and the rucksacks by the way get heavier and heavier

00:18:11.780 and heavier and heavier so by the time you're doing robin sage it's a you know 18 to 24 hour

00:18:17.080 infiltration or insertion with 125 pounds plus on your back like excruciating right and they've built

00:18:23.700 you up but in that time they've also built up your confidence you've built it up yourself by going

00:18:28.700 through these gates and and so you know there's this idea of you know are leaders made or are leaders

00:18:34.540 you know born or are they made or how does that work like you can always get better is my answer

00:18:40.560 because whatever wherever anybody started day one if you stuck with it you were always better the day

00:18:46.860 you graduate you're a king of the world and when my wife at that time emily was who had

00:18:52.020 graduated from the farm at the cia five days before my green beret graduation when she came

00:18:59.600 and i didn't get to go to her graduation but she got to come to mine and when she came

00:19:03.960 to that graduation in favor north carolina that was king of the world moment man i mean that was just

00:19:09.540 like we had done these things and this is the same girl that you had to work up the courage for 10 years 0.76

00:19:14.800 to ask out oh yeah that's fucking awesome yeah just built up just pure cowardice eventually i had 0.78

00:19:19.600 a you know bro we're out of way yeah listen figure out a way it's it's kind of like what you were 0.89

00:19:24.500 talking about in the meeting this morning dude and what you talked about last week um about people

00:19:30.140 having to work up the courage to approach well i mean it's a it's a skill yeah you know you have to

00:19:34.900 develop that skill yeah and that that that same lesson is sal was talking about in our meeting

00:19:40.140 in regards to business um because a lot of young people you know they they're they're timid we were

00:19:47.300 talking about this on our on our ruck this morning um they're timid or they lack the confidence to go

00:19:52.780 up and say hey this is something that i'm thinking of thinking about or that i'm concerned about or i'm

00:19:58.920 this or that and uh it's funny because like it's such a it it could come down to your your relationship 0.99

00:20:08.840 your wife your husband your fuck your job any of these things it all comes down to that same 0.99

00:20:13.560 mustering up the courage to like just go dude you know what i mean well you have to learn i mean 1.00

00:20:19.500 communication is the key right i mean the older the older i get the more i realize like how valuable

00:20:24.940 skill of being able to communicate actually is like communicate your struggle it's an amazing

00:20:31.280 solution to at least step one to figuring out your struggle if you have a problem with your husband

00:20:34.880 or wife like we need to communicate that you know but being able to go up and have the courage to be

00:20:40.120 able to have that conversation with somebody you admire or somebody who is your boss or leader like

00:20:45.480 that's a skill and you develop that skill and in order to have to be the leader to have the

00:20:50.780 conversation kind of downstream if you will you have to learn to have the conversation upstream you

00:20:55.420 have to communicate up and down and that's a learned skill so being able to to go through those

00:21:00.920 little scary moments specifically like with as guys like with girls hot girls you know when you're 0.98

00:21:06.600 younger you're like holy fuck man i gotta ask i gotta ask well if you don't ask you don't know 0.98

00:21:09.800 the answer might be yes it might be no but it might be yes you know she might have to be a cool moment 0.99

00:21:14.420 yeah yeah especially after all that time you wanted to talk to her that you didn't yeah i mean well it

00:21:20.880 was even worse than that because we were totally in the friend zone yeah i mean good friend zone yeah i mean

00:21:26.000 that's a hard thing to break out she worked for my mom at tennis camp in the summer she was the camp 1.00

00:21:31.020 director yeah i mean it's it's nuts it was your windy peppercorn exactly know what that is oh yeah

00:21:36.440 yeah it's actually she uh m uh she's like calls me squints pal doris no way yeah she thinks that i 0.96

00:21:44.440 she's like you guys don't know this is this is sandlot this is the sandlot movie if you haven't

00:21:49.420 watched it yeah go watch it i mean it's just what a total victory that kid got hell yeah and eventually

00:21:55.380 he got the girl just like i did that's right he had like 10 kids we have three but same now in

00:22:00.520 today's world yeah that's cool man so i because uh the the story gets better though so you you get

00:22:08.620 your green beret you serve where's your where's your first deployment so first appointment was iraq in

00:22:15.240 2007 at the same time that m was in africa in 2007 2008 and uh yeah iraq 2007 like height of the surge

00:22:24.400 you know it was a like it got real fast and by that i mean you know how old are you uh so that's

00:22:31.720 2006 i guess i'm born in 1979 never do math in public i think that's 27 close enough yeah close

00:22:39.960 enough still young still young and it it's like you know it's hard to go back in time and remember

00:22:46.900 what it felt like when you'd watch the news or something and at the end of the news hour they

00:22:52.020 would show a picture of you know the fallen servicemen and women who died that that day or

00:22:56.680 that week i mean that was just part of the consciousness and it was happening every day

00:23:01.740 was you know that was what the election was about then it's like that was just american blood was being

00:23:08.500 shed and i'm in special forces like this we're we are going to like be in the fight like not we're

00:23:17.060 supporting the fight because you know you look out at the army and it takes or the military it

00:23:21.240 takes all different kinds of service like the the fifth special operations force truth is most

00:23:26.060 soft missions require non-soft support like it is a team effort that said for every trigger puller

00:23:33.600 there's seven in support the trigger pullers are the ones that are that are taking you know most of

00:23:39.280 the risk as it goes and that's the life we choose that's our lot that's not to say there's a

00:23:44.140 hierarchy there's that's just to say that's our personality this is who we are we want to run to

00:23:49.400 the guns and that doesn't make it easy and the more i've gotten along this path and the more that i've

00:23:55.200 had real talks with green berets where when you're when you're serving you don't have these kinds of

00:24:01.320 real talks like hey were you scared before we went in that house like you have those later and i've

00:24:05.760 talked to people that are just i mean national treasure level heroes and for what they've done and

00:24:11.540 they're like i was scared to death going like when you know you're going in the house scared to death

00:24:17.360 and like these are people you just figure out a way to go in anyway it's it takes a lot of courage but

00:24:22.460 you do it and you know that is why being around those people those kinds of people is why i just

00:24:31.000 believe so much in our country in our way of life because at every turn americans have said there's been

00:24:36.900 a class of us that have said send me it's come in all different kinds of forms but send me

00:24:42.420 you you you're very optimistic about americans and their and their their resiliency and their their

00:24:50.160 love for this country how do you feel about it currently i feel great about it currently i think

00:24:56.080 that america if you look at if you look at the history of our country it's not like you get

00:25:03.960 10 great leaders in a row right you get great leaders where you need great leaders and the rest

00:25:10.960 of the time it's it's people you know we wring our hands too much talking about stuff that doesn't

00:25:15.680 really matter that much when when when it gets real that's when you get the great leaders that

00:25:21.840 just seem to emerge and my my take is is that it's it's not they just emerge out of thin air i mean

00:25:28.800 there's an undercurrent to this country that is that is very very very strong and it's really easy

00:25:34.800 to forget about it it's really easy to forget about it the more time you spend on you know

00:25:39.800 online chat forums and social media watching the news or watching any of that stuff it's very depressing

00:25:46.200 and what i find is that there's so many great people out there just living a great life and really

00:25:51.560 trying to pay it forward and they they they do things like ask their neighbors how how is it going

00:25:56.820 like oh you need to borrow a saw great here you go like let me come over and help you you know this

00:26:02.720 is stuff that goes on and like if someone doesn't get any light no i mean someone posts that stuff it's

00:26:07.720 going to go nowhere it's it's it's like not even worth it's just there's just this undercurrent of

00:26:12.320 people and you know i'm again i'm very fortunate that i'm i have a lot of green berets in my life

00:26:18.760 and people in in the special operations and veteran community and and and in the sort of my dad was a

00:26:24.700 42 year union guy in ohio like same same great vibes about that kind of work ethic and those

00:26:32.120 kinds of folks that are just doing the work and and just living a great life and happy about their

00:26:37.100 lives and my dad sucks at facebook and he doesn't have instagram and you know every once it's just 0.66

00:26:42.800 that's just not his life and and so you know there's that underbelly of people that are just

00:26:48.680 doing great things and i just really believe in in our way of life and it yeah i'm just i'm a

00:26:56.140 believer man i think it's interesting you know i met jason uh february of 2020 at wadapalooza that's

00:27:03.000 right dude was drinking a budweiser right he's the only other guy one of the only other guys drinking

00:27:06.900 beer i'm like well fuck i'll look i'll go meet this guy and we end up talking for like an hour and a 0.91

00:27:11.100 half thanks to jason kalipa thanks to jason kalipa my guy who doesn't drink beer but uh and it was 0.96

00:27:17.580 right literally i don't know maybe seven to ten days before you realize that the world was going 0.99

00:27:22.920 to go fucking stupid and we were going to see all the stupidity in america all unravel in the first 0.99

00:27:29.020 60 days and it was right along the time when our friendship was just evolving and it was really 1.00

00:27:34.600 cool because i got to see and listen to jason's perspective uh through social media or just

00:27:40.520 religiously how he's always been optimistic about the american people he's an extremely extremely

00:27:45.780 um well-educated historian on america he he's a very well-educated human on the history of just

00:27:53.900 politics and war inside america and it's really good to hear his perspective because it's hope you

00:27:58.680 know where we we see a lot of the negative because we live a lot of our lives on social media and i think

00:28:03.400 jason and part of the go ruck experience which is really cool which is where i appreciated go rucking is

00:28:07.880 you need to get outside and go see the world and go experience you know the the breezes and the snow

00:28:13.440 and the sunsets with a little weight on your back you get a lot of reflection you see a lot of good

00:28:17.120 people it was just a really good time to collide with you and i think you know to andrew to your

00:28:22.180 point like he's got a different perspective that i think is very very valuable specifically for the

00:28:26.520 american people today i think his perspective is pretty spot on i mean look dude the the the reality

00:28:32.320 of the scenario that we're in is we're in we're in a scenario where i believe that the media and the

00:28:38.660 politicians profit off suppressing uh the unity that people naturally have in reality you know like

00:28:46.480 when you walk this is why i always say on the show like when you when you walk into a store or in

00:28:53.000 public or you go somewhere it's not like what people see on the internet it's not even close to it you 0.96

00:28:58.480 know people aren't attacking each other people aren't you know like screaming racism shit to each 0.85

00:29:04.840 other's faces or whatever the flavor of the day is you know of controversy people are generally pretty 0.95

00:29:10.680 fucking cool and i think that you know like you said sal and jason both i think you know getting out 0.93

00:29:16.800 in the real world and being around regular people and kind of like not listening to people who profit 0.97

00:29:22.720 off of us being divided and believing that we're all shitty that they profit from this

00:29:28.580 when you remove yourself from that avenue of propagation you start to look at things in real life

00:29:34.760 i actually agree with what he's saying i think that it's the reality i think most people in america

00:29:40.120 are fucking great people i think there is a light a big light that has shined on the worst parts of our 0.93

00:29:47.200 country and i think that most people are trying pretty fucking hard to be a decent representation 0.98

00:29:52.840 of what of what america should be you know when i go to the gas station and pump gas or when i go to a 0.98

00:29:58.960 restaurant like i see good people i don't see i don't see bad shit and it doesn't matter like 0.99

00:30:04.440 if they're asian or if they're black or if they're white or if they're fucking whatever else they happen to 1.00

00:30:10.580 be like i see the people that get along and value the fact that people from all different cultures can 0.98

00:30:16.360 you know function under the ideals of what this country's supposed to stand for and i so i i have

00:30:24.020 hope too i i just when i look at some of the younger generations i wonder and this is where a little

00:30:31.380 concern comes in for me is you know like when you and i were both the same age um we share a tip we

00:30:39.480 share i think a parallel ideological value system uh for the most part and you know all of our friends

00:30:46.340 do right like we're all the same kind of people but like bro every single one of those people i know

00:30:50.560 is our age so like when i look at like the concern that i have it's concern for the younger men and

00:30:57.940 women that are under 30 years old wondering how they feel do they still have a sense of you know 0.91

00:31:04.720 like you're calling for america right like um bandy that like this is what i mean my generation

00:31:11.340 our generation was so soft and was like you fill in the blanks until 9 11 happened and then we

00:31:18.060 answered the call to service and now all of a sudden i we get a pass no no it's no i'm not saying 0.91

00:31:23.000 that i agree with you i agree with you there's there's every every fucking old gary v says this 0.75

00:31:28.660 all the time bro yeah gary v says this it's a generational thing when you get to a certain age 1.00

00:31:33.720 uh you know like our fucking parents looked at us and they're like fuck these kids are pieces of 1.00

00:31:38.100 shit like you know and like their parents their parents looked at them and said the same shit 1.00

00:31:43.320 and like like i oh i wonder how much of it is just like us saying that because it's like the natural 0.99

00:31:50.180 thing or how much of it is actually real because it's hard it's hard to know it's hard part of me

00:31:56.760 says it that the more you say it the more you will believe it and if if we kind of take a leap of

00:32:02.900 faith and we say look i might not be able to go online and and and change the nature of america

00:32:10.100 through you know on instagram or whatever right whatever tiktok of the day is right but i know

00:32:16.440 what i can impact and if you have faith and i know you guys do because of how you lead your lives

00:32:23.240 if you have faith that you can impact others and i know you are because i know a lot of the lives that

00:32:29.220 you are impacting and then you make a list of your friends right put me on that list and you say

00:32:35.040 there's a lot of other people out there that are fighting the same fight that we're having and you

00:32:38.960 know what you're doing you're raising the next generation's leaders and those leaders are the

00:32:43.800 ones who will lead the ones who are not being led like this and that to me is the hierarchy the true

00:32:49.580 freedom is to break free of these chains of thinking that life is going to happen in instant

00:32:54.640 gratification and that this is all about you know your your your value exists in this metaverse or

00:33:00.120 on your phone or in this digital world your value exists in the real world that's right and it exists

00:33:04.480 from you to yourself in the mirror and to the people who you respect who are around you and to the

00:33:09.820 networks that you have and the people that you have and where you put your time and your energy and

00:33:13.500 your faith and so when i say keep the faith i mean there's a lot of us out there that are doing this

00:33:18.820 right and the more that we believe in ourselves the more that becomes the self-fulfilling prophecy

00:33:24.160 yeah that's a good that's a good point dude yeah that's a really good point what did you i like

00:33:30.080 the part i like what you just said about about

00:33:32.840 you're leading the future leaders i like that because 0.96

00:33:39.020 that and that's real that's real shit because just like in business where you're not going to 0.95

00:33:45.520 get every customer you're going to get certain customers that are then going to replicate out for 0.98

00:33:50.320 your business right like when when people discover go ruck you're not getting a hundred percent of

00:33:55.240 the people that you're getting two out of a hundred who then recruit five more each right and so that's

00:34:02.680 how business works so it makes sense that that's how that will work too to me i mean this is the sort

00:34:07.260 of classic special forces mission right well while i have a well i have you i'll like this is because

00:34:14.780 every every time i go on any platform i i make it real clear how much i owe the special forces

00:34:20.300 community and how much of my life is impacted by that and and it's it's a it's a way to kind of say

00:34:25.260 hey find something bigger than yourself and serve that mission it doesn't have to be this but the the sf

00:34:30.920 mission is you work by with and through others you go in so the first you know the horse soldiers

00:34:37.000 into afghanistan right after 9-11 in the boneyard of the soviet empire they went in there and worked 0.99

00:34:42.920 with the northern alliance in order to defeat the taliban they didn't try to go in and say hey 0.95

00:34:47.600 we're just going to do this ourselves you work with others you train the trainers you force multiply

00:34:51.920 others and so the more that we're able to do that in our network of of people that's called mentorship

00:34:59.020 yeah that's mentorship it implies you know sometimes it's judgment free sometimes it's not

00:35:04.800 sometimes you got to hold people to account sometimes there's you know it comes in all different

00:35:09.720 kinds of flavors but like that's all we have i mean you're you know you're you're nieces and nephews

00:35:17.120 your your kids like my kids these this is all going to belong to them right and we can absolutely set

00:35:24.040 them up for success and i know lots of kids and i know lots of parents who are raising their kids

00:35:28.900 right and i know lots of parents that i i think maybe could improve that a little bit yeah and i think

00:35:34.400 you know it breaks my heart when you see kids that you know are way over beasts or super inactive

00:35:40.080 or all these things that are not there they're not really choosing that they're being born into that

00:35:45.800 that said keep the faith man there's a lot of us out there and we can impact what we can impact

00:35:50.700 and just keep fighting yeah i like that dude i think it's true too i think it is true what do you

00:35:56.640 think about um well moving on from the special forces in your experience there what tell us about

00:36:06.160 go rock dude like how did where did this idea come from and like give us like like how like like how do

00:36:13.440 you start a go run you know what i'm saying like he wrote a book about it yeah yeah kind of i mean

00:36:18.360 that was a signed copy that was yeah that was a uh a pandemic sort of i got to do something you know

00:36:24.560 let me let me dig up an old journal and bookend it and all that stuff i wrote a little book called

00:36:29.420 how not to start a backpack company it's it's so little we didn't we printed it once however

00:36:33.840 did some copies and like i think it's on audible now or whatever it wasn't it's just like i needed

00:36:39.460 to get that out for me yeah um but it was mostly just to catalog the struggles of it right because

00:36:45.120 people look at stuff and they think that you know the beer fridge at hq has just always magically

00:36:49.620 been that way and payroll just magically got it's just like oh this is just what it is like

00:36:53.220 our revolution is their baseline type stuff but you got to go to the next generation and talk about

00:36:57.680 what the revolution was like you know and so it was i'm a totally accidental that's how familiar

00:37:04.480 sounds over there shaking his head accidental entrepreneur i never had a lemonade stand as a

00:37:09.160 kid i was playing sports and doing all that kind of stuff whatever um but as i was in between

00:37:15.320 my deployment so the first one was to iraq second was to uh west africa and emily was in

00:37:21.960 a different country in west africa but on christmas leave between those two i went and

00:37:26.220 visited her at her diplomatic housing in abijan cote d'avoir west africa right and i was like man

00:37:32.360 this it was it was really weird because it's coming from this war like you you have your gun trucks and

00:37:37.980 you know you're at war in iraq and you have your team like this is what's up you know and i went to

00:37:43.140 africa i'm like man this is like the the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up just from

00:37:48.320 the vibe like but it wasn't we're not at war at all it just i didn't know what to make of it

00:37:55.140 basically which is in some cases a lot worse you know and so i went to emily's house and you know

00:38:00.720 did you know normal things that any you know house husband would do like base fortification

00:38:04.960 and uh you know increased security posture and i made her a couple go bags so for us the definition

00:38:12.220 of a go bag or a go ruck was when you go out on a mission you would put a go ruck in the trunk of

00:38:17.720 the humvee in case your vehicles was disabled and you had to fight so you have extra radio equipment

00:38:23.000 bombs guns ammo water extra supplies right and and so it's like i just took that knowledge and said okay

00:38:31.380 well you need to have this just in case because you know she's smoking hot five foot five and a half 1.00

00:38:37.660 let's say you know girl in in africa meant to operate autonomously yes she had a dog but meant to

00:38:44.640 operate autonomously the cavalry ain't coming and so how do you make how do you set her up for success

00:38:51.160 like i didn't want her to die you know and so hey here's some stuff put this in your car at all times

00:38:56.980 keep this in the house at all times use this just in case and there was just like you know basic house

00:39:01.760 husband stuff and was trying to figure out what i was going to do next because i knew at that point

00:39:07.060 i had about another year in was like i something's got to give here she's in the cia i'm in special

00:39:12.940 forces and that ain't gonna work you know and so i was going to transition out and then i was finally

00:39:18.420 going to go back and get that ground branch job that i had originally sort of said okay i guess

00:39:22.580 maybe go get that and met the people she's like oh while you move to west africa you should do the

00:39:27.800 go ruck thing like what does that mean um but you know emily's always been my muse in life

00:39:33.040 amongst so many other things but it was like okay well i guess i can build go rucks or go bags for

00:39:40.640 people i can teach them how to put you know better cameras up in their house i can show them some

00:39:44.660 security posture and all that stuff and so that was the the origins was just like go do the go ruck

00:39:49.240 thing and then i went back to america and it's like okay great got the idea it's basically done now

00:39:54.520 right you know right and so it's like all right well you know i got to figure out this import export

00:40:01.300 business to west africa and there's diplomatic pouches and there's all this stuff you're kind

00:40:05.500 of not supposed to use and ended up you know not going that route i'm like maybe just figure out

00:40:10.360 how to do the bags right like because i know nothing about bags except the thing about special

00:40:15.780 forces is you will become an expert of your your gear an expert because you know choose the wrong

00:40:22.600 socks that's how you know that's how napoleon lost at waterloo right like choose the wrong footwear

00:40:28.280 you're out of the fight have the wrong gun you're definitely dead right stuff like that

00:40:32.000 and and so you become an expert of all things especially rucksacks as well because you spend

00:40:37.320 all your time you have weight on your back like hey i'm gonna sprint into combat with no weight

00:40:42.540 uh and just jog in and like take care of the bad guys said nobody ever that's not a thing like you

00:40:48.200 always are carrying weight and so i was like all right so build this uh bag why not so how do i do

00:40:56.540 that i don't know like how do you i remember googling like how to backpack designer there was

00:41:02.060 this ad on youtube was very primitive at the time anyone like okay well how hard can this be

00:41:07.260 a terrible question to ask yourself because it's a million times harder if you know how hard it's

00:41:11.740 gonna be you're never gonna do it might as well just do it right those are the questions that you

00:41:15.120 want to you want to find out the answers to when you ask yourself so put did what you know probably

00:41:19.940 pretty normal put an ad in craigslist new york city for a quote backpack designer because that's how

00:41:24.580 you do it i guess and you know found some applications found this design team out in

00:41:29.620 bozeman montana that because the economy was terrible which by the way is a fantastic time

00:41:34.480 to take a chance on stuff and uh they had been laid off from their job in new zealand because you know

00:41:40.600 pack selling bags down there was rough or something i don't know and they were trolling the internet

00:41:44.660 looking for work and i mean i can play these we can play connect a dot for till forever but ultimately

00:41:50.340 years later had a a bag that i basically believed in right except then i had to figure out how to

00:41:56.840 get it built to scale in in america and then figured out like well how much does this cost again

00:42:02.820 right once it had gone through that because in r&d you don't i didn't consider the cost side at all

00:42:08.400 i just want to build best stuff on planet earth that i possibly could that would make my buddies proud

00:42:12.940 that i served with that i was now kind of regretting not still serving with right because i'm not a good

00:42:17.940 enough green beret now because i'm not still doing green beret stuff that's the curse that we all

00:42:21.560 have i don't care if you do five years or 30 that's the the curse you're never good enough of a green 0.94

00:42:26.680 beret so i want to make them proud forever so it better be pretty damn good like if they have it in

00:42:31.200 afghanistan the straps better not come off and better hold the weight well all that type stuff right 0.67

00:42:37.080 um so then you start to scale manufacturing problems right which is completely different it's like

00:42:42.940 wait this is going to cost what i mean it's cost me what i wanted to charge like if and if you went 0.97

00:42:50.140 to pick your it's not free to make your shit i mean it doesn't cost two dollars and you sell it for 50 0.84

00:42:55.660 bucks that ain't how it works shocking huh or you go to the store and you're like oh well this this uh 0.98

00:43:00.800 you know this ogo backpack that you know the ones that you see at the software conferences that cost

00:43:05.020 50 bucks or the north face one that you know sarah lee cupcakes bought out whatever time period that 1.00

00:43:09.480 cost 50 bucks and you got different software companies on those and they just give them away

00:43:13.100 for free and they cost 75 bucks now like like 75 bucks that's expensive right and i'm like whoa

00:43:19.080 this is costing me a lot more than that and i'm like well what's how am i gonna challenge number one

00:43:28.160 yeah challenge well at this point we're chatting it's like we're restarting the challenge series if

00:43:33.180 we're at challenge number one you know because i thought the challenge was you know get this thing

00:43:36.680 built to standard yeah which took years years years so you're telling me when you have an idea

00:43:42.980 you don't it just doesn't materialize into a business well you didn't give up after six months

00:43:48.300 yeah and and the thing is is that it is easy to it's easy to say when do you say it's good enough

00:43:55.740 and this is a real existential question because you know i mean great art is is never finished it's

00:44:02.500 only abandoned i think that's da vinci right and you know steve jobs great artists ship at some point

00:44:08.940 you have to actually ship that's right it cannot be it doesn't count until you do that's right yeah

00:44:14.820 and you have to accept the fact that i might have to iterate this or i might have to you know

00:44:18.960 accept the world's judgment and and then you're you're back into this conversation you're you're not

00:44:23.640 just doing this for yourself with your sewing machine in ma's basement right you know blogging about

00:44:28.380 it like you have to actually come up with something of value to somebody else put it for sale and sell

00:44:32.800 it and then people buy it or they don't and and that's that's a that takes a little bit of courage

00:44:37.560 too who bought your first one well this was a great time hold on this was a great thing that he

00:44:42.820 we talked about on our ruck this morning what happened when you launched silence you didn't get

00:44:49.900 yelled at absolute silence that is the most the deadliest killer of them all silence and

00:44:57.320 it was something where you know i'd spent you know years and years at this point and find a website

00:45:03.580 designer in a place you know the place that had built the rucks was also gonna uh pick pack and

00:45:09.900 ship it for me which is a big no-no if someone's promising to do all sorts of different stuff just

00:45:15.380 realize you better have someone that's your people that qc their quality control there which ended up

00:45:20.320 being had to get one of my old teammates who had transitioned to the guard to drive in an hour

00:45:25.760 one way periodically to check all this stuff because it was in colorado anyway um but the

00:45:31.600 biggest thing was silence it was like i knew that this was awesome i knew it was a good story that

00:45:37.500 could be a thing but the biggest problem was me i was not really willing to at that time share

00:45:43.400 anything i'd set up my first facebook account account an anonymous pseudonym because i still wanted

00:45:50.440 to go be a better green beret by being like jason born or whatever and i'm like well i can't have

00:45:56.380 a real name out there if this is this and you know you don't get to have your cake and eat it too in

00:46:01.980 this case and so i had to eventually i had to kind of pick and choose is this something that i actually

00:46:06.880 believe in or or not and you know like yeah it's really interesting because you know we used to when

00:46:14.700 we first started our social with first form the fear factor of actually being out there and getting

00:46:21.400 behind it we used to wear luce libre the mask and it was a thing that we would nobody knew who was

00:46:27.500 behind the mask and we would make all the content at first form because we didn't really want to

00:46:32.280 associate our names to it exactly just in case just in case right like it was kind of like holy 0.91

00:46:37.060 fuck man like we're going out there well let's just put these masks on nobody will know who it is 0.93

00:46:40.520 yeah and for the first i don't know better part of maybe three or four months until we got 0.99

00:46:43.820 comfortable doing it we were the legion of boom with luce libre mask on our head you know so that

00:46:48.760 fear even now my social handle is mr fursella because at the time you didn't want it to be

00:46:53.760 south fursella because if my friends really knew what i was doing i would be judged god it's such a

00:46:59.420 power i mean the fear i still have it like the worst thing the worst thing that i could get would be

00:47:05.860 a a note from somebody that i served with or somebody tells me that somebody that i served with

00:47:13.820 was somehow disappointed or embarrassed because they knew me or because i served with them and

00:47:18.060 like that's just a huge thing that it's it's highly motivating for me and it's the same thing like i was

00:47:24.580 not strong enough at the time of the launch of go rock to sit and say i'm willing to just all my chips

00:47:32.440 all in i had to kind of i had to figure out if this was actually for me but at some point you have

00:47:38.880 to decide because that it ain't going to work out if you don't but i think you realize in that

00:47:43.700 evolution of figuring out who you are and who the business is that unless you go all in you stand no

00:47:48.560 chance yeah i also figured out that i was completely empowered to do this on my own terms and i could

00:47:53.720 do it the right way yeah i don't have to build you know disposable stuff that sucks that's going to 0.61

00:47:58.560 break i don't have to just because it's because fast fashion became a thing that we studied in

00:48:03.940 business school and it's like oh look at what a great business this is like i don't care i don't

00:48:08.260 believe in fast fashion i think you should build better stuff and i think you should stand by it

00:48:13.260 i think you should you know have it mean something put some soul and some heart and some love into it

00:48:18.920 and like really give it some meaning and say this is worth this and i don't i don't want to i don't

00:48:24.540 want to play the commodities game that's a race to the bottom goods bullshit race to the bottom i agree

00:48:29.560 dude and like i sleep really well because i know that we leave it out on the mat and you know r&d and

00:48:36.360 new product development and all that stuff it is a it is behind the scenes it is in our r&d center

00:48:43.560 the the folks that are testing our gear and there is blood on that mat every single day and we love

00:48:49.160 each other and we fight it out and once we eventually get to something where it's like all right are we

00:48:55.500 going to go another round today or is this good and it's like that's the vote and there's a vote

00:49:00.120 it's like nope let's go to the mat right and so then we go to the mat and and it's like and then it

00:49:05.500 leads to better products better things that we then in our souls we believe in and when you believe in

00:49:11.220 something man then you can get into conquering the world but it's like when you don't believe in

00:49:15.860 yourself and you try to go find yourself on a six-month backpacking trip through europe or wherever it

00:49:21.080 is southeast asia like you know the beach or whatever movie right like i'm gonna go find myself

00:49:26.160 in that same beach that dicaprio was at like good luck with that that is not gonna work out such a

00:49:30.760 common thing right now like right this second in society there is a plague of that these people think

00:49:39.220 that they can like go on an adventure and discover themselves bro you have to build yourself 0.99

00:49:44.020 you got to create yourself and that shit is fucking hard it's not fun it's difficult and like 0.99

00:49:50.020 jason's sitting here talking about the longer that you delay this process the longer you delay 1.00

00:49:56.080 the reality that you have to fucking forge yourself into what it is you're trying to become 0.85

00:50:01.160 the the longer you delay that the less likely that it's ever going to materialize that's my opinion and 0.97

00:50:08.320 i see this with like this is a fucking trend on social right now where people are literally totally 0.92

00:50:14.480 i actually talked about this in our meeting this morning they're totally abandoning reality for 0.99

00:50:22.280 this fucking delusional social media shit we're like they're i see these people going on these 0.99

00:50:27.500 adventures and they're like oh i'm disconnecting how can how are you disconnecting when i'm watching 1.00

00:50:32.860 you twirl around in the motherfucking rain talking about how you're living your life like bro you're do 0.99

00:50:38.940 it you're you're putting on a play for people on the internet that you don't even fucking know and 1.00

00:50:44.480 while you're putting on this play for these people on the internet that you don't fucking know your 0.97

00:50:49.200 life is passing you by and you are losing your opportunity that you have which is your time 0.91

00:50:55.140 because you're trying to entertain people and convince people that you are somehow more enlightened 0.95

00:51:01.500 or more free or whatever the fuck y'all think you are but like you ain't fooling me bro and you ain't 0.99

00:51:07.460 fooling jason like bro this shit is fucking hard and you are going to have to suffer you're going 1.00

00:51:13.620 to have to we talked about this too on the we should have recorded the fucking ruck bro because 1.00

00:51:18.200 there's not a single person out here like all the people that you admire all the people who live 0.97

00:51:23.540 great lives all the people you read about all the people they make movies about all the people 0.54

00:51:27.820 who have impacted society all the people have created every single fucking one of those people 0.93

00:51:33.320 has suffered immensely and the reason that you admire them is for the struggles that they went 0.93

00:51:39.280 through not the struggles that they ran from and danced around and put on a play on social media

00:51:44.260 discovering themselves like bro i'm be real with you and this is going to piss some people off but 1.00

00:51:49.620 i'm so fucking sick of that shit i'm so fucking sick of it because it's the most inauthentic shit that 0.99

00:51:54.780 we see on the internet oh i'm enlightened look at me i'm disconnecting oh no duh you're putting it 1.00

00:52:01.520 right there you're you're fucking setting up a tripod to film this shit like who the fuck are we 1.00

00:52:07.860 fooling here yeah like dude there's going to be so many people in 10 years 10 12 years 1.00

00:52:16.140 that are going to regret wasting their entire fucking youth on bullshit and they're going to say fuck i 1.00

00:52:23.760 don't know why nothing ever worked for me i don't know why like my ideas never came to fruition well 1.00

00:52:28.560 because the minute it got hard you didn't stick it out for two years like jason did to put a product

00:52:33.880 out and then when it came out which we're going to get to in a second you get fucking silence and then 0.99

00:52:39.580 you keep persevering through it that's why your shit didn't work out bro you're you're too busy 0.99

00:52:45.480 dancing around pretending like you're living your life this would dude this was no different and i know 0.99

00:52:51.540 i'm getting off on a fucking rant here but this was no different than when i was building our first 0.91

00:52:56.080 company supplement super stores bro i was 20 fucking i was 19 years old we started it the first three 0.99

00:53:01.900 years i made zero dollars the next seven years i made 695 a month i didn't make shit all my fucking 0.99

00:53:08.680 friends they were getting fucking jobs they were getting their college jobs right they're making 60 1.00

00:53:13.520 grand a year 70 grand a year they're calling me a broke motherfucker telling me when am i going to get 1.00

00:53:18.240 a real job they're taking vacations they're quote unquote living their life right and i'm doing 1.00

00:53:25.540 this bullshit and here's the thing those same people that did the same shit which is the same 0.99

00:53:32.500 version of the shit that i'm describing now which is this oh i'm fucking free but i'm gonna record it 1.00

00:53:38.720 all right the same those same people are the same fucking people that now hit me up and asked me if i 0.98

00:53:45.780 could fucking hire them or hit me up and say hey i want to work with you guys or hit me up and their 1.00

00:53:50.060 life is a complete fucking disaster because they fucked off for when they had the opportunity and 1.00

00:53:56.180 there's so many young people right now that i and i dude you fucking can disagree with me all you want 1.00

00:54:01.440 we have a lot of young listeners but there's so many young people that i see fucking biting the wrong 0.97

00:54:06.480 bait in reality not understanding that like what you do now is going to compound over time you started 1.00

00:54:12.340 go ruck in 2008 it's 2023 bro this shit doesn't happen in one day or one year or fucking one week 0.99

00:54:18.260 or one month it takes pure grit and perseverance and if you want a life that you admire that you're 0.99

00:54:25.460 going to be proud of um maybe you should consider that you shouldn't spend your entire life pretending

00:54:31.400 like you're more enlightened than everybody and disconnected and more spiritually heightened by 0.93

00:54:35.780 dancing around in the fucking rain telling us that it's authentic when you're recording it for the 0.99

00:54:39.740 internet sorry it doesn't make sense it just doesn't and i know where you're like we talked 0.99

00:54:44.700 today you have the ability to see where people are going to go 10 years from now down their life i 0.58

00:54:50.700 had the same ability bro i can look at these people and be like i can tell exactly where the fuck you're 0.66

00:54:54.680 gonna end up i don't know man it's a plague right now yeah i mean so the thing is is like you can't 0.95

00:55:01.620 you can't fake yourself yeah and and that's the biggest that's the biggest thing that they

00:55:06.380 they they will weed out people who are in things for the wrong reasons in in training

00:55:12.340 yeah right they'll weed people out just because it gets hard and you can't fake yourself and so

00:55:17.060 the thing is is that you have to there's this there's this big gap and in the gap though is that

00:55:24.060 people don't understand all of the steps or they don't want to pay attention to them but there's no

00:55:29.640 such thing as i'm just born confident i'm just born a leader i'm just born this way it's just

00:55:35.480 very incremental and you make these you make these steps and then you're ready for something that's

00:55:40.280 more more challenging in life and then the the the big maxim though is there's there's no real

00:55:46.900 self-made people but to be a great teammate you first have to be a great individual and so there's

00:55:52.960 this glorification of the eye the individual that's out there like look at me all this stuff i'm doing but

00:55:59.420 to be a great individual you have to actually do stuff and hard stuff and i don't i don't i say

00:56:04.360 this as a matter of fact not like shaming people into doing whatever you have to do this you have

00:56:10.560 to ask the girl out you have to the things that you know that you need to do those are the things

00:56:16.620 that are the good place to start and wherever you need to go to get there make the incremental steps

00:56:22.560 to get there and there's there's no silver bullets there's no kind of if someone's selling you as

00:56:28.020 this like hey the world's full of nails and here's a hammer i i'm the only guy selling a hammer that's

00:56:33.580 a problem that's that that ain't gonna work no you have to get to the point where okay yes you you now

00:56:40.260 have done some hard things to where you can't fake yourself you you know this to be true and then you

00:56:46.160 have to say okay so what do i believe in and and what mission do i want to be a part of and so

00:56:52.160 man that's where the real magic comes in because we need each other as people being on a team is a

00:57:00.120 lot better than being by yourself for your whole life or for you know the greatest moments of your

00:57:05.740 life are you by yourself no no you have to invest the time and into other people into the networks of

00:57:12.600 people that you have you know there's the the you know don't believe all the news but the the study

00:57:17.920 i think it was the 85 year harvard study or whatever about you know the the secret to life's

00:57:23.660 happiness is relationships matter a lot right and it's one of those things where like invest in

00:57:31.560 others that that's what you're going to think about on your deathbed yes you have a drive inside of

00:57:36.660 you you guys have drives inside of you that's like you want to change the world conquer the world

00:57:41.520 bitter bigger better businesses more impact at the same time you're probably not going to think

00:57:47.520 about how many zeros are behind in your bank account on your deathbed you're going to think

00:57:50.860 about like the two of you i don't even think about it now amen yeah amen right but it's it's it's like

00:57:56.560 the the team that you get to do this stuff with that's so rewarding the the crew that i push sandbags

00:58:02.500 around with in my driveway this this whole weekend i'm sitting here sore right now because we're

00:58:07.960 pushing sandbags around on saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon it's like push some sandbags around

00:58:13.000 for an hour drink some beer in the driveway talk about our lives our kids are running around it's a

00:58:17.120 beautiful day and capital freedom in the universe also known as florida right and it's one nickname

00:58:23.840 for it and it's just it's awesome it's really rewarding for for for me and at the same time

00:58:30.920 that kind of also fills the cup up to go yeah get back to conquering the world and trying to get more

00:58:36.060 people to live this way of life that that i that i cherish and really deeply believe in dude my my my 0.54

00:58:41.820 re and by the way i fucking love that i wish i was drinking beer with you guys the the 0.92

00:58:47.120 which by the way just so you know i did drink a lot of beer when i was on vacation 0.92

00:58:50.200 a whole lot still good for anybody's yeah it's fucking great yeah i actually didn't i send you 0.80

00:58:55.180 a picture tell you how great it was because i said like on the show last week i think i'm done with 0.59

00:58:59.320 alcohol forever because it'd been like a long time but i i was lying i'm definitely not done um

00:59:04.660 but dude where i get irritated with this this mentality of the what we did what we were just

00:59:10.800 talking about is like you these people that's fine i'm cool with that if you really want to live 0.97

00:59:15.720 your life and you want to be a free spirit you want to float around fucking whole life 0.97

00:59:18.880 great great friendships and do these things fucking cool bro i get it but where it gets me dude and 0.99

00:59:24.780 where i get irritated with it is when those fucking people think that they deserve what the fuck we 0.99

00:59:29.140 have or what you and i have we've created when they haven't done none of the fucking work and and 1.00

00:59:34.340 none of it for any amount of time like that irritates the fucking shit out of entitlement bro it 0.98

00:59:40.200 fucking irritates the shit out of me and it also irritates the shit out of me when i see young 0.99

00:59:44.880 people who say they want all these things they want to build something they want to be successful 1.00

00:59:49.940 they want to do this but then they're fucking buying into the they're they're eating the wrong

00:59:54.140 bait like if that makes sense like yeah but so you know i think people are so starving to be a part of 0.85

00:59:59.900 something bigger than themselves no doubt no doubt starving for this i i know that i was i i go back i

01:00:06.260 was it was such a well the basis of your company is that the basis of our company is that it's the

01:00:11.940 same you know it was such a stressful time in my life between the whole build up my my senior year

01:00:18.380 in college to what job am i going to get and you know you know i grew up in the 80s was influenced by

01:00:25.100 you know the people that were working on wall street and you know you know the gordon geckos you're 0.99

01:00:29.560 supposed to get out there and make a make a ton of money and that's that's what that's what it is that

01:00:34.040 became i thought i was going to be a consultant and solve business problems i do solve business

01:00:37.800 problems i'm not really a consultant you know but it's like it was such a a deeply emotionally

01:00:43.740 challenging time for me because i did not i had all of this energy i had all of this passion i really

01:00:51.240 wanted to do something special with my life and i just did not know how to do it i didn't know where

01:00:57.580 to start i got a lot of no's from i mean i applied to name a place goldman sachs mckinsey

01:01:03.700 the big the big type of places that i thought my quote quote background had prepared me for i mean

01:01:09.080 i got people that told me i was i was way too like relaxed or chill i didn't have the drive to be at

01:01:15.080 goldman i mean i had no fault to them it's like there was just the people in the front line and

01:01:19.520 probably i didn't know how to interview i didn't know how to sell myself at all no bro if you let 0.70

01:01:24.240 have seen the real you they would have fucking said bro you're way too intense exactly so then 0.96

01:01:28.520 you overcompensate yeah i don't know how to present this and i was really bad at you're an 0.94

01:01:33.740 authentic human bro at that stage and i was trying to like god what am i supposed to say because i

01:01:39.200 didn't but but the truth is i was not a good fit for that right and the no was great right two great

01:01:44.580 answers in the world yes and no maybe an uncertainty are the worst because they just eat you from the

01:01:49.940 inside and and there's so many people out there that want to be a part of something bigger than

01:01:54.540 themselves and and we have to at times we have to cut them a little bit of a break meet like go and

01:02:01.880 you guys do this you meet them just a little bit closer to where they are and you say hey check it out

01:02:07.560 find something that you believe in pay your dues spend years there learn the place before you have

01:02:14.700 this big grandiose opinion about you know the big bosses suck and they don't know anything like pay your

01:02:19.480 dues but but go to someplace that you believe in like there's there's almost no bad as long as you 0.99

01:02:25.940 get to work hard there's almost no bad job in your 20s because you're gonna learn a lot of shit you 0.93

01:02:31.960 don't know anything yeah if you choose to yeah i think that's what we're going through and to 0.91

01:02:36.640 andrew's point earlier to jason to your point it's not the zeros in the bank account the best thing

01:02:41.960 that i feel we get to do every single day is go back and invest back into this community and

01:02:47.160 helping these young people find their path because it's everything yes it's it is the most

01:02:52.140 challenging thing that we do the gray hairs exist on my head for those exact same conversations

01:02:56.920 but it is the most rewarding because there's nothing better than watching somebody commit to

01:03:03.880 becoming personally excellent becoming a best version of themselves taking their life serious

01:03:09.200 taking this opportunity you know and and running with it because it makes you feel empowered by

01:03:14.920 their action to go out and change the world and give it that's the invigorating part about what we

01:03:19.400 get the opportunity to do every day is is feedback into the youth and see who bites you know and see 0.96

01:03:24.260 who believes i fucking love that i dude what i love dude more than anything is when i fucking see 0.97

01:03:30.120 someone who i didn't actually believe in step the fuck up who i saw like in the beginning like dude i love 0.96

01:03:37.120 to be proven wrong about people i fucking love it and it's actually a testament to how i really think 0.80

01:03:42.400 about people too because if i if they did because if if i was really how people think i am sometimes 0.99

01:03:47.560 i would hate that motherfucker for proving me wrong my favorite thing in the fucking world is when these 1.00

01:03:53.080 fucking young people who i think cannot fucking possibly fucking step up when they step the fuck up and 1.00

01:04:00.100 they prove me wrong bro it's it's like the coolest fucking thing ever to me i'm like dude all right 1.00

01:04:05.840 there's fucking hope here we will have our moment yeah our generation will have our moment in mass for 0.88

01:04:11.700 the next generation yeah that's my belief yeah i believe it too i believe it too so dude getting 0.97

01:04:16.920 back on your story because it's incredible i'm sorry we went off on the rant um silence yeah all right

01:04:23.860 so how'd you manifest how did you manufacture non-silence all right so i got a website and i got i got

01:04:30.040 three bags and a hat on that website right three bags and a hat that's what i got right that's a good

01:04:34.900 start it's a really good start and i'm like okay my first idea was was a terrible one but it was

01:04:39.660 definitely one of action i'm gonna get in my truck with my dog and drive to 48 states meet people get

01:04:46.060 into adventure try to sell backpacks out of my truck i bought i bought the sport rack up top because i

01:04:52.020 definitely didn't have enough room inside of the extended length expedition for all the stuff i was

01:04:57.340 going to sell and then i had them ready to ship me resupplies as i was selling them through that

01:05:03.240 whole summer you know like it was it was pretty sweet the the plan that i had in my own mind of

01:05:08.100 course drove around to 48 states sold exactly zero zero backpacks got a lot of opinions from people

01:05:13.960 right like if so if you're in the in in sf or you're in the army and you're say you're at the

01:05:20.320 range and you're not shooting well everybody has an opinion about why you're not shooting well

01:05:25.440 and when you're shooting well it's like they just kind of nobody's got an opinion about anything

01:05:30.320 they just like watch like respect you know and so this is one of those things everybody had an

01:05:35.060 opinion about well maybe if it was this and maybe if it was that and the bottom line was i thought that

01:05:40.120 i needed to drive around to small men's shops something like that where i could have one-on-one

01:05:46.580 conversations with people and sell them on the virtues of this very expensive rucksack which

01:05:51.520 which cost uh was for sale for 295 dollars right unknown brand hey made in america special forces 0.98

01:05:58.120 roots all that stuff but 295 is 295 yeah they're looking at it saying that's a fucking backpack whoa 0.93

01:06:03.540 and then wholesale is 50 and i'm making basically nothing off of that awesome right but hey it'll get

01:06:08.980 the word out whatever but this is definitely gonna work you know and what i realized was at the end of

01:06:14.420 that summer which i refused to to stop short because i'm too stubborn right there were some other

01:06:19.760 people that were around and everybody had left it was scorched earth right because they brought on

01:06:24.480 someone to take photos brought on someone else to you know help with the sales someone else to help

01:06:28.700 with all this stuff by then it was me and my dog bad country song me had me and my dog and a bottle

01:06:33.500 of whiskey at the campgrounds literally in wyoming okay and it's like this business model is terrible

01:06:41.320 how about let's not do that anymore and so what should it be and what i did not know was anything about

01:06:47.440 facebook ads or google adwords or whatever and frankly that's something that i was never going

01:06:52.560 to get good enough fast enough in order to make this worthwhile and truth is i didn't really want

01:06:57.340 to get good at it let's let's be real right and so it was like okay but what i do know how to do is

01:07:02.280 to build teams i know how to i know how to embrace the suck and i know how to teach people to embrace

01:07:06.480 the suck i know how to basically show them what they are capable of way more than they could possibly 0.88

01:07:13.420 ever know that they're capable of so how about you meet me on this street corner 1 a.m it's called 0.97

01:07:18.500 the go ruck challenge um details not forthcoming started out at five to six hours it became 10 to

01:07:25.320 12 then it became 12 plus hours and and it was like details not forthcoming oh yeah bring this

01:07:32.000 rucksack and we're gonna stuff it full of bricks at the start point how does that sound and what

01:07:37.580 happened was fight club with rucksacks was born and it just became this kind of i mean the business

01:07:44.020 we had to build around it and i go into all those sort of hey the first price of the go ruck challenge

01:07:49.060 was half the price of the rucksack and you got to keep the rucksack so you got 12 hours with a green

01:07:55.400 beret aka at that time me you know in awesome leadership team building excellence lessons underneath

01:08:02.360 the ruck and you got to keep this ruck that i basically somehow net lost money on but at least

01:08:07.900 it was something man like we were and and all of a sudden that was the energy that became go ruck was

01:08:14.660 it's about pushing a little bit harder it's about let's do it together it was a team event 0.99

01:08:18.980 never a race so what you're saying is you had to get out there and get your fucking hands dirty 0.99

01:08:23.960 very and lose money yeah and lose money and lose money and convince people to do really hard shit 0.99

01:08:30.180 in the middle of the fucking night bro i fucking love it my my so my first time my first experience 0.99

01:08:35.620 with go ruck that i ever heard of you was from our cousin michael michael yeah and he did one of 0.99

01:08:41.960 your i think it was a 24 hour deal did you do 24 hour deals heat so there was maybe it was 12

01:08:47.300 right yeah uh basic tough heavy now because it's the go ruck challenge underneath that but the heavy

01:08:53.480 these 24 hours about 10 years ago it was early on yeah that was that was probably the 12 plus but

01:08:58.020 the 12 plus sometimes turned into 18 to 20 you just didn't know there was no end yeah you even got

01:09:03.600 cousin greg to do it he did yeah oh that's cool yeah but that was where i first heard about it yeah

01:09:08.100 it was it was cool that had to have been like 2010 uh yeah maybe maybe 11 maybe 11 yeah i remember

01:09:14.800 he had his little man everything was like the go ruck gray t-shirt with you know that's every

01:09:19.140 everything from a long time ago is now 2010 it was 2000 like last week but i switched to 2010 now

01:09:25.640 but yeah but the underground experience i think is an important thing to note here is you had to 0.58

01:09:32.160 pivot and say okay well fuck it i'm not going to go sell around to these you know bougie men's 0.99

01:09:36.840 boutique shop let's get back to my roots i mean we tried the non-bougie ones too which are like 0.99

01:09:40.580 hunting and fishing stores you know we try we tried them all and none of it i mean in all fairness to

01:09:45.820 them i remember you went out and made believers of these people by by doing it yourself or arguably

01:09:51.500 different people at that time right because we went after the the crazies we went after the this 0.60

01:09:57.060 really niche group of people that it's the same and so it's the same type of person that signs up for

01:10:03.600 special forces in a time of war or not and says send me and this is why talk about belief in america

01:10:09.840 belief in our way of life because what i found in my veteran transition at that time which

01:10:15.520 became the veteran stereotype transition aka really hard right was i needed to find something to

01:10:22.980 believe in because i had left military service and i wasn't doing the cia thing and my marriage was

01:10:30.140 you know in the crash and burn stage later i got remarried to the same girl it's you know this

01:10:35.140 it's it's a it all gets crazier but at this point it was me and my dog basically and no money because i

01:10:43.300 poured it into everything and and it was you know it was just one of those things where

01:10:51.320 america is full of people that at that time still wanted to show up and do really hard things and i

01:10:59.440 thought that was reserved for special forces i thought i will never be as cool as i was in special

01:11:04.400 forces that is where the awesome exists it's only there and the rest of my life basically sucks 0.81

01:11:10.440 because other people suck because they're not green berets right and that's me looking at life 0.88

01:11:15.640 through a straw and feeling sorry for myself and what i found was look i mean the the basic truth 0.97

01:11:21.280 is i never would have signed up for the army without 9-11 am i glad 9-11 happened no i'm just telling you

01:11:26.320 my life was is profoundly richer because of the things that happened in the wake of that tragedy and

01:11:32.920 so i don't sit here and take some sort of high ground like i served in the military and other people

01:11:37.460 didn't i have zero high ground i would not have done it without this the point is is that there's

01:11:42.020 a lot of people out there and life is a you know we all we all there's lots of different ways to to

01:11:49.540 serve and all of that stuff but there's a lot of just crazy people here that want to do really hard 0.93

01:11:54.460 stuff and like want to serve other people and are just good fucking people yeah and it's so easy to 0.82

01:12:00.720 forget about that man it is and and every time i led a class you know you go on facebook you get

01:12:06.660 angry you go to a go ruck challenge you get inspired and that's what it was that's why 75

01:12:11.840 miles a weekend between two classes and the recons and driving around leading because the next summer

01:12:17.100 i was i was driving around not the same exact route but i was leading go ruck challenges all over

01:12:21.440 the country and in the same truck and you know up and down the east coast new york and boston and dc and

01:12:27.940 and all this stuff and that was just awesome and and it was exhausting at the same time but just so

01:12:34.860 awesome i had this purpose and really the fuel was the people that showed up man i'm just like

01:12:40.340 pouring my heart out giving everything i can of the lessons that i had learned for my time in in order

01:12:46.500 for them we say building better americans that's what we were doing and i just want them to experience

01:12:52.320 a day in the life of my boots and it took away all my kind of prejudice against whatever it was

01:12:57.920 you didn't serve or you didn't serve well enough or you didn't you know you didn't you didn't go to

01:13:02.640 iraq when i was there my time was harder well whatever it is these things that go through our

01:13:06.680 head that have no productive value for ourselves or for others and i just found a bunch of good

01:13:12.000 people that want to whoop it on and at that point it's like okay now i believe in go ruck because of

01:13:17.400 these people what you find when you serve other people is you can the more you serve you get greater

01:13:23.640 returns that encourage you to serve even more in which case then you're on a really positive loop

01:13:29.420 in life and that was really rewarding and that's the loop that we're on and it's a really awesome

01:13:33.400 loop to be on i fucking love it i how about how about that driving around the country yeah no i knew 0.82

01:13:39.020 anything no it's awesome this is jason you know when jason and i met we saw saw rode all over the 0.90

01:13:45.060 country and what the fuck was that nissan maxima man 2010 nissan maxima but i mean to your point 0.83

01:13:50.620 they're gonna ship me goods i'm gonna sell so much shit oh yeah yeah bro i'm gonna be in 0.99

01:13:55.720 manhattan kansas just send the pallet now yeah it's the same fucking sound identical it's the same 0.99

01:14:01.100 fucking story it literally it's literally the same time i'm sitting here laughing because like 0.99

01:14:05.480 we're we're literally crossing truck stops you know what i mean yeah and i'm getting my fucking 1.00

01:14:09.620 ass beat you're getting your fucking ass beat and i think well man like you know well you know you 1.00

01:14:14.520 know how it is you tell yourself the stories well the next call the next call the next call but 1.00

01:14:17.500 i i want to highlight something because we share this with our people all the time like if you want

01:14:21.560 them to care about you you have to care about them first and i think when you start to find

01:14:25.240 that real true service leadership that servant leadership about the world is you have to give

01:14:31.820 in order to receive and i think that's where where i went wrong or we went wrong where you were going

01:14:36.740 wrong is you were expecting everybody to buy the bag before you when you pivoted then you said listen

01:14:42.680 i'm just going to go give these people what i got well and it's amazing what they'll give back

01:14:46.360 don't you think that comes though that so so i agree with you on that i think that comes though

01:14:51.280 from all the work that you put in just to get to that point right like it's all necessary yeah bro

01:14:56.860 like he's put in fucking five years of work to sell zero bags so like eventually you get to a point 0.98

01:15:02.720 where like dude when you were riding around the country or riding around you know fuck we were 10 0.98

01:15:07.760 years into our business you know what i'm saying so like people you know it's it's natural to think 0.97

01:15:15.160 like hey dude like look at all this cool shit i did and i have nobody care it's like a total kick 0.99

01:15:20.260 in the balls bro you're like fuck but and that's where most people will stop most people will stop 0.99

01:15:25.240 there and they will not do what you did they will not do the the i i'm going to make this work no 1.00

01:15:31.760 matter what i got to do and they will not do you know the get out press flesh for lack of better

01:15:39.580 terms meet people shake hands do the work with them and dude i i think that's the key i think

01:15:47.380 that's the key to our business as well i think i think our people and everybody that's involved

01:15:52.040 they work hard and they do things and other and it helps people progress and dude i just love i i

01:15:58.220 fucking love the fact that it was so hard to get to like i know you probably don't love it as much 0.65

01:16:04.260 but you do now right but like i love that it you went through all these phases and all of a sudden 0.98

01:16:10.020 it's like fuck this i'm going out and i'm meeting people and then it became this thing you know it 0.89

01:16:14.120 wouldn't exist if that i i did not want to i did not want to run a backpack company yeah my heart was 0.94

01:16:18.320 not in it and it's just awesome it was better because of the adversity yeah i i want to highlight

01:16:23.420 two things one i mean personally i only support one other fitness brand and it's jason's yeah and

01:16:29.580 because i understand the story and know it you know what i mean i believe in what he's doing i know

01:16:33.240 what he's been through i believe in the company i'm of a buyer of the product like i i love the

01:16:37.560 mission yeah you're an actual customer of those yeah without question and i and it wasn't uh you

01:16:42.700 know it was started over a beer built into an understanding then i'm buying bags for all the

01:16:47.800 guys and going through the whole process then i'm tech you know it's it's i believe and i think

01:16:51.960 that's an important piece that you create the belief but two you go back to the communication piece

01:16:56.960 you know where you you learn to have the tough communicate the hard communication you get a little

01:17:00.860 better at and i think where the pivot happened at least for me is like i i was so tired of just

01:17:06.860 being rejected like i have to pivot something like i have to like keep going back in but i wasn't going

01:17:11.660 to quit you know and i think that i learned a lot about myself you know chewing 22 cans of tobacco on

01:17:17.000 the road you know 27 spitters in the floorboard but what you learn is to continue to have a different

01:17:22.020 conversation but never quit to show back up to have the conversation and through that you create that

01:17:26.860 community and my first you know my first bond was actually a green beret in of all things uh in

01:17:34.620 colorado no no well travis yeah travis wilson that's kind of funny actually yeah um the two of

01:17:41.840 them but dwayne clifford and and travis wilson but it was all right man i gotta talk about something 0.91

01:17:48.000 else like these guys don't give a shit about my protein powder how about them as humans like i'll just 0.91

01:17:51.600 start talking about them then they became their friends you know and becoming their friends you 0.97

01:17:55.600 became you know and then it was almost like they they bought from you out of i don't know pity

01:17:59.780 i didn't know we wouldn't even fucking be here for one for those two dudes no i give it i mean 0.89

01:18:03.220 and steve calabrese like there's there's a few people steve's another one that were just these 0.79

01:18:07.140 people that you know you create through just being and having good strong conversations outside of

01:18:13.180 anything else we were talking about business just life it reinvigorated and kept me moving but then

01:18:17.920 it was a sale and then it was a friend and then it was a referral sale and it was one of those things

01:18:21.720 where that strength and communication back to it is like you have to learn that no might not be the

01:18:27.520 forever no it might just be no temporary you know and keep showing back up and you never know how that

01:18:31.880 that conversation pivot will happen or really will change your life but you have to continue to show

01:18:36.140 back up and compete dude i i just hearing jason tell his story just i like everything that you say

01:18:44.800 i'm just over here like fuck yeah yeah yeah because like dude it's it's very parallel to what we had to go 0.80

01:18:50.320 i mean the other part is we use the word hard right and hard means a lot of things but ultimately it's 0.97

01:18:56.220 about what's hard for you i mean you look at you know physical hard is not as challenging for me as

01:19:02.840 say you know the 50 miler the whatever the like whatever 125 pounds for whatever like that's hard but

01:19:10.800 for me it's not as hard as the the feeling of utter kind of failure and rejection at okay so i

01:19:20.780 accidentally kind of quit the army that sucks bad decision failure teams back to war failure right

01:19:27.380 marriage crash and burn failure right friends got awesome jobs now at least perception was doing

01:19:35.220 really well really perfect perfect lives totally happy because you start you start you start 0.83

01:19:40.200 they all are narrative right right and it's like and i can't even sell one damn backpack not one not

01:19:45.660 one right i can't i can't i can't do anything right and and like you get on that struggle bus and you start

01:19:51.780 believing your own negative self-talk for too long it goes real bad and those kinds of emotional

01:19:57.600 hard they're hard man they that is my definition those still happen to you yes yeah that's that's

01:20:05.400 that's a i think that's a big misconception that people think that you go through it only in the

01:20:09.000 beginning stages but i think there's staircases to that well it's important you know no i think it's

01:20:13.680 super i'm not shaking my head because i disagree i'm shaking my head because people would think 0.99

01:20:17.360 anything else yeah i mean i had bro this shit's fucking hard it's hard for me like i have fucking 0.99

01:20:22.380 mental breakdown once fucking every month bro like thinking like holy fuck like there's this there's 0.99

01:20:27.540 that there's this this this this this this this like it's it you know and then you get like like 1.00

01:20:33.940 you're saying bro like if you start comparing you're like well you know all my other entrepreneur

01:20:38.360 buddies aren't having mental breakdowns right can't be because they haven't posted it on social

01:20:43.100 no no that's that's real i mean and i say this from a place because like you become you become

01:20:47.820 stronger or tougher or more calloused or whatever it is but you're not immune and i think that's an

01:20:52.400 important piece to understand as an entrepreneur i mean jason asked me to speak last year it is go ruck games

01:20:56.620 uh or uh in april right yeah and i didn't go and and i had to call him and tell him like dude i

01:21:02.340 mentally couldn't go like i wasn't in a good place and i had to call him and like check that down friend

01:21:06.660 to friend i had to say like and it's you know i don't i didn't tell anybody else in the whole world

01:21:09.980 except you i'm saying it now because it's like i had to come to the realization like i was not mentally

01:21:14.960 in a place to be able to do it yeah and you know you you and it's not 2022 we had the best business

01:21:21.220 year we've ever had in our whole lives 2021 best business year we'd ever had there's no reason for

01:21:26.220 me in april or was april yeah april ish to be like in this mental place but dude i felt like i wasn't 0.82

01:21:32.300 enough i don't know what the fuck was going on but that phase of life it was smacking me in the face 0.91

01:21:37.080 you know and you have to be able to i think recognize it understand it but it is normal you're 0.98

01:21:42.920 not it's not a one-time thing it's a it's a continual process that you have to go through

01:21:47.680 of rejection and failure but then figuring out how to get through those moments so you can succeed

01:21:53.280 it's not i mean this isn't doing mother theresa had doubts about god i mean this is well documented

01:21:59.680 i mean everybody if mother theresa can have you know question her faith like

01:22:04.440 let's give ourselves the permission to understand that that's going to happen to all of us yeah and

01:22:10.340 the more that we go through something and this is where you need support structures i knew how hard

01:22:16.340 that call was for you by the way but you you need kind of support structures around you you need to

01:22:22.080 kind of have those things in place because you do actually need other people in your lives you need

01:22:26.920 your your good relationships with your kids or your wives or you know they all kind of ebb and flow a

01:22:32.100 little bit just by the nature of life but you know it's a dangerous path when you get in a bad place

01:22:37.820 and you start getting in your own head and you stay in your own head and just your own head

01:22:41.580 and and i've been there man and it is just i've got a couple things where like okay feel this is a

01:22:48.120 problem i need to kind of you know not push on the gas right now and that's kind of what you were

01:22:54.140 saying last year and like it's like that has come because i have been through so many times of

01:23:00.460 adversity in my life which has not been perfect by any stretch even though it's been rewarding and

01:23:05.700 meaningful for sure but those are separate things yeah and i've learned like this this version of

01:23:11.760 hard this is gonna this is gonna take its toll on me and so this is what i need and sometimes just

01:23:16.620 little stuff like hey man i need to take a deep breath outside and go somewhere for like two hours

01:23:21.020 or two days or whatever not usually two days but two hours maybe and i need it i need like two weeks

01:23:26.200 yeah but still you know something's got to give because if i go you know when you're in anger you

01:23:32.480 should like two things you should not do is act or speak right or you feel whatever if you're not

01:23:39.260 in a good place you should not do those things so you know take a walk around the block or ruck around

01:23:43.600 the block or do something it's crazy what a fucking walk will do for you that was a good plug there by 0.94

01:23:48.800 the way yeah well it's well documented what a good smooth what a good walk will do for you and it's 0.97

01:23:54.440 even better if you're rucking yeah it's always better always better because rucking is better than

01:23:59.460 it's superior it's definitely 75 harder listen it's definitely 75 harder you got to be careful 0.86

01:24:06.240 i know this jail troll your ass on the internet i understand this because i get tagged in it daily 0.98

01:24:10.960 the thing is at first i thought you were fucking andrew called me he's like hey 0.99

01:24:15.800 at first i'm like hey man are we cool with jason like 0.98

01:24:21.060 that's great and i could tell he was like inherently kind of pissed a little bit i'm like no no no jay is 0.99

01:24:28.180 he's one of us like that's fucking good man like explain this shit yeah bro once i fucking got it 0.97

01:24:34.400 i'm like no i this is fucking like well if i go for a run he should be like oh you should have gone 1.00

01:24:38.600 for a rock yeah like motherfucker i was running you should have been a rookie it was so funny because 0.99

01:24:43.140 when you first started tagging me i'm like is he talking shit or is like a little bit that's my 0.99

01:24:48.960 but dude well i kind of liked it i was like i'm like all right and you know what guess what i'm 0.93

01:24:56.400 gonna do for the next 75 days i'm gonna fucking rucking you know i'm saying yeah i mean it was 0.98

01:25:00.740 the people in your community that were doing your 75 hard challenge that just like had embraced it to 0.89

01:25:08.300 take it up a notch and i think it's i think it's great and you know for me rucking you can just kind

01:25:13.760 build it into your life so if you're already going to walk you can rock this doesn't have to be

01:25:17.960 so kind of sliced and diced and you don't have to drive to the gym an hour to do this no i love it

01:25:23.060 dude you know just bake it in man i will tell you because this is something you know i adopted in 2020

01:25:28.260 right so i guess that's a late adopter but i never now we're still early man yeah we're still early i hope

01:25:35.080 and i hope we're part of that but i i look at you know i never was a walker like i never walked it

01:25:40.640 wasn't like in my head i'm like who the fuck walks like you don't really work out walk but at the 0.77

01:25:45.500 time people with canes at the mall well you know but then i like that that was my perception growing 0.93

01:25:49.740 up like that is lame i remember my grandparents taking me to the mall in dayton ohio with people

01:25:54.660 that are walking they're like oh they're just here to walk and then the simpsons did a whole spoof

01:25:59.000 on that and i'm like i had the same perception but in and in that 2020 time frame like right before

01:26:04.440 everything kind of went bonkers i found you know i found myself rucking and then it was like you know

01:26:08.940 to get outside from all the madness and all the noise rucking became not like something it was

01:26:14.340 like this is what i was doing you know i was rucking in the in the fields or i was rucking up the hill

01:26:19.680 you still do that i still do it i mean in my farm it's my choice of exercise a really cool gym at my

01:26:23.840 farm it's like badass and i choose to ruck out there because it's like the peacefulness of being out in

01:26:29.300 the woods and you know when you're trekking through the leaves or through the woods and hearing it

01:26:32.740 and being you know one with nature is my hippiness but it's one of those things where i found so much

01:26:38.020 peace and rucking because i was by myself you know and then on the flip side then i decided

01:26:42.640 to ruck a marathon for my 40th birthday we found like 25 guys and we all went you know so like you

01:26:47.740 we could you can ruck with a team and have an unbelievable time you can ruck by yourself and

01:26:52.520 have an unbelievable time and it's amazing what adding 45 pounds to your back will do to a 45 minute 1.00

01:26:57.540 walk it's a fucking hell of a lot harder what the fuck did i do wrong then because that shit was 0.99

01:27:01.940 not fucking great to me that was a terrifying experience what's that 0.99

01:27:05.600 i need to go by myself next time i was dying what the fuck you talking about traumatized 0.99

01:27:12.380 you know what's you know what's funny though is like you know with just adding 45 pounds to your 0.99

01:27:17.440 walk i don't know you probably have some calculation where it's two and a half times the value or caloric

01:27:21.980 burn to the sense but i will tell you man like some of the i mean i just rucked during my 75 hard

01:27:27.100 it's all i did yeah i mean i rucked the entire time it was one of those things where i wanted to

01:27:30.760 see how much progress i could make by simply really just walking yeah and it's one of the best shape

01:27:36.960 i've ever been in my entire life i just rucked i just you know i found peace it was cold it was hot

01:27:41.400 i went through you know christmas and thanksgiving and halloween i did it all all rucking and i had a 0.91

01:27:46.180 fabulous experience i actually look forward to going outside putting my shit on and going for a ruck 0.83

01:27:49.580 but the caloric burn by carrying that 45 extra pounds plus the core strength of being able to hold it up 0.96

01:27:54.820 like it's a hell of a workout oh yeah well plus we were talking in the locker room dude it's you

01:27:59.400 know the the because i used to do the weight vest and then we went to intervals and now i'm going

01:28:03.660 back to the ruck but like jason was explaining it to me in the in the weight room you know the the

01:28:09.460 ruck will also help with your posture your core we all need and i could tell right away when i put

01:28:15.180 the thing on i'm like you know straightened out straightened out load core you know what i mean it

01:28:20.020 helps your core stay engaged while you're rucking you know i use will grump keys 0.72

01:28:24.820 that's where i fucked up man honestly for anyone listening 45 is a lot to start with 0.96

01:28:29.500 yeah if you're if you're new to it or you know we went for what an hour something it was it's 0.96

01:28:36.140 point being that's a lot to start with you can just start with a little bit less weight man 0.99

01:28:39.620 yeah i just couldn't but like i could but that's the thing well also bro i couldn't like be a pussy 0.99

01:28:43.760 and like i mean i got the fucking founder of the company here i'm like i got andy is my 0.99

01:28:47.820 fucking boss i'm like uh shit was hard for me too jason be trolling you here in a minute he'll tell you 0.99

01:28:53.120 oh you don't need 45 pounds you'd be 20 minutes in a walk he's like but bitch you only got 25 1.00

01:28:56.460 and if you've gone with jason he's got really long legs so his stride is like way out in front of you 0.81

01:29:03.440 i think it's important real talk i think it's important for people to hear

01:29:08.240 you guys and us you know me and talk about that that doubt and that frustration and those feelings

01:29:15.960 because like people do assume that once you get to a certain point everything's cool right

01:29:22.120 and i i had one of the cool things about going to mexico this last week was where i went there

01:29:27.880 were a lot of older people who were very successful who had exited their businesses and you know i was

01:29:34.080 talking to them and talking to you know why did you guys exit what did you do how was it etc etc etc 1.00

01:29:40.040 and dude talking to all these guys like it was all the same shit it was all like fuck man like 0.99

01:29:46.040 you know i put in 40 years to this and it was it was mental mentally a burden for me for that entire 0.98

01:29:54.120 time and you know i think it's important for everybody to understand that that's kind of the

01:29:58.860 cost of playing the game like that's that's the ticket that you're buying when you choose

01:30:03.040 entrepreneurship you are buying a ticket for perpetual uncertainty at all times and uh

01:30:10.020 a lot of the times you're surprised by great things great things happen i mean how many great

01:30:14.900 relationships have you formed over the last decade of doing these events that you that's the most

01:30:19.920 rewarding part yeah because you know i'm i'm not good at celebrating the highs you know it's we're not

01:30:26.000 either it's a it's a constant state of problem triage that's if if it's coming to you you're either

01:30:32.880 creating something new because there's some bigger problem or someone's bringing you a problem that's

01:30:38.440 that's usually been the case since forever and that's just your life yeah and so you get good

01:30:43.880 at solving problems but you know it's it comes at a cost and never it never it never feel like you

01:30:50.880 like it's hard to explain you know because we have a lot of young entrepreneurs that listen to the show

01:30:55.980 it's hard to explain to a young entrepreneur that the uncertainty that you feel now doesn't go away

01:31:05.680 you know what i'm saying but what will happen is you will become more skilled at dealing with the

01:31:11.020 uncertainty so it doesn't stress you quite as bad but because you're traumatizing yourself like going

01:31:16.880 through this process early when these do when these problems do occur there is like a trauma response 0.92

01:31:23.000 of stress automatically you're like oh fuck and then you're like oh wait we already dealt with 0.91

01:31:27.220 that we can fix that that and then it like calms down quicker but it never goes away dude it really 0.98

01:31:33.240 doesn't like i i all the people i talk to you know ed uh ed my let who's one of my best friends in the

01:31:39.800 entire world he's who i talk to when i'm really fucked up and one of the things that he talks about 0.96

01:31:45.360 that's that is so true is writing that line he calls it blissful dissatisfaction it's where 0.74

01:31:53.540 it's where you you are dissatisfied with where you are but you're also grateful for where you are

01:31:59.740 and i think when you're in that proper balance things are much more manageable you know you don't go

01:32:06.060 quite as dark you naturally you and i and sal and you know these guys here we don't we're not 0.98

01:32:12.060 like like we talked about earlier winning and high performance that's the fucking standard dude 0.91

01:32:17.700 so like how do you celebrate when you do what you've expected yourself to do anyway there's no 0.97

01:32:22.320 celebration to be had you get to stay on the team yeah that's that's what you get yeah you get to

01:32:26.240 continue to play the game like and that's that's that's a misconception you know people think that

01:32:31.740 like when you built a great company like you have right like that people you know it's this big

01:32:37.280 celebration all the time and it's like no dude the reason we built a company the reason you built 0.97

01:32:41.960 a company is because you you the excellence is the fucking expectation so as you describe go rock 0.97

01:32:50.440 as a great company it's i always i cringe just a little bit you know because i just that's not my 0.97

01:32:56.500 my vision of it and i see you do the same thing when someone's like oh congratulations i know but 0.98

01:33:01.600 i'm telling you it's a great company like from the outside you need to hear that shit like it's 0.98

01:33:07.380 important that you hear it because nobody ever fucking tells us when we're doing right dude we 0.99

01:33:11.800 only hear the shit when it's bad true or not true very true yeah true so like dude you're doing a 0.97

01:33:16.640 fucking great thing and you're improving people's lives you're making a big fucking difference for 0.99

01:33:20.980 people there's there's tens of thousands hundreds of thousands of people who have gone through your 0.99

01:33:26.320 events whose their lives have changed and they're they're going to be able to look back and say 0.73

01:33:31.280 dude life's hard right now but remember when i did that fucking 16 hour event with jason mccarthy 0.95

01:33:37.460 i got through that i can get through this and like dude that's noble shit bro and like you need 0.94

01:33:42.040 to like because i because like dude i have to be reminded of it too but i'm just telling you man 0.98

01:33:46.680 like it's from my perspective i admire the fuck out of it i think it's amazing shit american-made bags 0.96

01:33:52.380 you know soldier servant leadership yeah serve for the country but i mean i you know going back to 0.99

01:33:58.100 it nothing good comes through your door right that's the role you signed up for i tell people

01:34:02.320 all the time you give your whole life to you know like you're you know this goes back to like i look

01:34:06.760 at my dot and i have this this kid that applied this real this real talk i'm so proud of steve yeah

01:34:12.840 i'm so proud of steve here you know he was let's do it was flipping pizzas at little caesars when we

01:34:17.540 found him true not true yeah true the dude was he was a little graphic designer webster filled out

01:34:23.660 internship form came down little from little caesars to gold medal of jujitsu you know to

01:34:29.300 you know huge piece of the real af podcast like i get to walk in he's no he's not a huge piece he

01:34:33.780 fucking runs it he's the first person i see every single day you know my family we loaded up this 0.79

01:34:38.520 weekend to go watch him you know roll around with other dudes which he's come you know obviously 1.00

01:34:42.560 complacent with you're pretty good at it tell you you and your boyfriend are really good at it but

01:34:46.840 the thing being is like that's what i show up for you know we got the wills and the errands and 1.00

01:34:51.500 and all of you guys like i'll take those shit sandwiches every fucking day as long as i get 0.99

01:34:57.060 to see you guys win and that's the thing like that's what you sign up for and that's why you 1.00

01:35:00.680 know you receive a compliment it's so hard because you're kind of like yeah i know why it makes you

01:35:04.060 cringe it makes you cringe you're right i feel the same way dude because the job's never finished

01:35:08.260 it's never like and you see all the holes like yeah when i look at what we got here every dude 0.99

01:35:12.540 every single guest comes in here and they say the same exact thing they say holy fuck like this 0.88

01:35:18.860 play like i've seen bits and pieces of this online does it no justice they said they all 0.98

01:35:24.260 verbatim do they not almost the exact same thing okay every time i hear it bro i'm like i didn't say

01:35:31.440 it because i knew it makes you cringe because i'm like i watch it i'm like dude he's cringing right

01:35:35.280 yeah because dude all i see is how we could get better and all i see is where we're missing the mark

01:35:41.040 and that's what makes a good operator i think effective in business sense because that's your job our job is 0.99

01:35:47.780 to look for the holes it's to fix the shit that you're fucking up and like you said about about 0.99

01:35:52.240 your life it's the same with a company bro we're not fucking perfect you guys aren't perfect it's like 1.00

01:35:58.300 being an orchestra uh conductor and you know you're trying to get everybody to play the tune 0.61

01:36:07.240 but there's it's never perfect it never you never one time get it right and and um i guess it is a nice

01:36:15.100 compliment when people think that it's perfect right or they look at it and think that but

01:36:18.640 i mean bro i get what you're saying dude because like all the audience thinks it's magical yeah they

01:36:23.500 well conductor hears the saxophone or whatever the hell it is yeah here play one missed tune you know

01:36:27.740 and that's that's that's a whole that's a whole nother set of problems take them out back and beat 0.99

01:36:31.640 the fuck well no i mean there's a whole there's a whole nother set of problems because when you 0.95

01:36:36.420 when you run a an effective company that people love and they appreciate and they feel like 0.99

01:36:43.160 they're a part of and you know that a lot of times people don't realize how hard that is to produce

01:36:48.900 it's like going into uh the nicest steakhouse in the world bro and you get the perfect service with

01:36:54.600 the perfect steak and the perfect experience and then you go in the kitchen you see all these people

01:36:59.040 working their asses off right a lot of people don't realize that that's a major part of every

01:37:03.560 single company right that's the part i love i love i love i'd rather hang out with people in the

01:37:08.000 kitchen me too like the ones doing the work me too i love it i agree well bro it's been

01:37:12.940 awesome to have you on the show man i hope you come on again i'd love to it's good it's great to

01:37:17.240 see you guys and uh you know just really congratulations on all of your success here

01:37:21.760 guys it's it's wonderful to see it's too bad i wanted to get i wanted to get his take on the

01:37:38.120 china balloons he is like he is a war child so between ukraine and china we could have got all 0.99

01:37:45.020 we could have our old a whole nother two hours on china and ukraine here yeah bro seriously

01:37:50.420 loves it it's like real talk i am really proud of you

01:37:54.240 no dude for real um dude i really appreciate you making the time to come up here i know you're a 0.80

01:38:03.540 busy guy you have a lot of shit going on if you guys are unfamiliar with go ruck um check out their 0.78

01:38:09.420 events check out what they do how many events you guys do in a year right now we've put on about 0.99

01:38:14.160 10 000 events since 2010 um we also have amazing like 500 local ruck clubs community-led and cities
