00:00:51.500You have tuned into the Rebel News live stream on this, a Monday, October 19th, 2026, coming to you from Rebel News headquarters somewhere in Toronto.
00:01:04.380I'm David Menzies and my co-host, well, before I introduce her, folks, do you know that today is National Kentucky Day?
00:01:13.060and my co-host because she lives in the free state of alberta she can celebrate national
00:01:21.560kentucky day with a shot of fine kentucky bourbon alas i cannot because ontario premier0.99
00:01:30.280doug ford forbids it shame on him in any event she is the she devil with a sword she is the0.59
00:01:38.080Khaleesi of Northern Alberta. She is the sensational Sheila Gunn-Reed. How you doing
00:01:44.620there, Sheila? It's a slow news day, I understand. Oh, nothing to talk about, nothing ever to talk
00:01:50.680about. I wake up in the morning, I'm like, well, what kind of journalism can I do today in such
00:01:55.460a slow news day? No, it's just a packed pierogi of a day. As always, I worked all weekend on
00:02:03.380news. And for the last, I don't know, five months, we're in the homestretch of a marathon that has
00:02:12.240felt like a sprint the entire time. It's referendum day in Alberta. Many of you know that I
00:02:17.160had my own third-party advertiser, Alberta's Choice. So every spare minute of my life was
00:02:23.280spent working on that. I already work more than full-time here and it was just signs and events
00:02:29.440and journalism the whole time and today Albertans will have their say in whatever happens today
00:02:35.600they can no longer enjoy or ignore the movement and write off approximately if you believe the
00:02:42.860polls one in three Albertans as just mindless conspiracy addled cranks that's more people than
00:02:50.900voted for the liberals in the last election in this province uh supporting a movement for
00:02:56.240independence and as i said whatever happens today it's not going away at all well you know let's get0.91
00:03:02.040right into the meat of the matter i mean there are two alberta stories sheila dominating the
00:03:07.600national news of course the uh separation vote uh that the polls just opened in alberta uh about an
00:03:15.660hour ago and that horrific tragedy in wainwright i understand um you drove up to the um canadian
00:03:24.400armed forces base there and you can give us a bit of an update and your thoughts on it but let's
00:03:29.080let's go first to the um separation uh debate uh we have a video here of premier daniel smith
00:03:37.640um i guess making her last pitch to those who are undecided
00:03:43.060oh oh maybe not a second i apologize folks we have been played with gremlins
00:03:51.080Oh, that's why we're late today. We have nothing but technical gremlins running through our TriCaster system lately. I should tell everybody, we announced it last week. I have a Stop the Cheaters campaign. You can find it at StopTheCheaters.com.
00:04:09.300And there you can see all of our evidence, our legal compendium for the evidence against the largest Federalist campaign, which is forever Canadian run by former Alison Redford's deputy premier under the old crooked corrupt PCs, Thomas Lukaszek.
00:04:30.100We had over 200 pages of evidence against him in our complaint, nearly a 300-page sworn affidavit.
00:04:38.180We wanted Elections Alberta to investigate and tell us they were investigating.
00:04:43.120And if they weren't investigating, tell us why not.
00:08:43.260we have caught sneaky Patrick Brown of Brampton breaking the rules,
00:08:47.500i.e. donations in kind when he is running his various campaigns and when i reach out to elections
00:08:55.220canada elections ontario it's almost as though they acknowledge yeah you caught him red-handed
00:09:00.380but um what do you want us to do about it oh i don't know your job as the referee so um at least
00:09:09.100in alberta you got some serious attention and a victory so good for you well a small victory i
00:09:17.320I mean, it would have been nice to have this considered at least before advanced voting.
00:09:23.840But you won't hear about this in the mainstream media because he's the mainstream media's
00:09:28.240favorite person to interview on the referendum and his wife works in the mainstream media.
00:09:33.700So and his communications girl, Serena Ma, I think she used to work at CTV Edmonton.
00:09:40.000So just fingers in the pie all over the place.
00:09:43.020But you won't hear about it on the CBC that, oh, by the way, you were caught breaking the rules.
00:09:48.440You entered into a compliance agreement.
00:09:50.280You'll never hear that before they trot him out to tell us how great Canada is.
00:09:55.120You know, Sheila, and this might be part of the answer.
00:09:58.600Here's a hypothetical question for you, and it wouldn't happen until years down the road.
00:10:03.180but if alberta separation were successful when it comes to the mainstream media in the republic of
00:10:13.040alberta no longer associated with canada do the carny liberals whoever the prime minister is at
00:10:19.620that time do they still fund the alberta mainstream media or is it hey thanks for your service bye
00:10:26.940in a free and independent alberto we should make it illegal to have uh government funded
00:10:35.340media hacks working here you know i don't know cbc would i guess it would be a cbc foreign bureau
00:10:43.300working in edmonton which it feels like if you watch their reporting it's like have you
00:10:49.360people met in alberton before they treat us like where the grill is at the zoo when they talk to
00:10:55.300people from the independence campaign you know like oh they vaguely look like us their bodies
00:11:00.720resemble us but they're so hairy and primitive that they're in the uncanny valley between human
00:11:07.400and animal that's if you watch the cbc try to relate to a separatist that's what you get
00:11:12.920i think we have that uh clip of oh fantastic premier smith queued up um because it's not just
00:11:19.440option two um on the ballot today so that's the referendum campaign the referendum on a referendum
00:11:26.100um one is uh we want to remain part of canada and option two is we should start the process of a
00:11:33.380referendum on leaving so uh option two is how uh i voted this morning at brookville hall um but we
00:11:42.000also have nine more questions and they deal with our relationship with the federal government
00:11:46.700They're largely on immigration and the Senate. And those were put forward by Premier Smith and her UCP government. Now, it's not necessary to do these things. You could just do them, right? Like you could just say, yeah, you need to be a permanent resident or a citizen of this country to access our health care or our education system.
00:12:13.220You could just do that because it's the right thing to do.
00:12:15.200I don't know why they put them on the referendum, I suppose, to take the wind out of the sails of the last question, question 10.
00:12:23.480But anyways, Premier Smith makes her final pitch.
00:12:29.060The real politics happens here on the ground.
00:12:31.320And that's why what you're doing today matters so much to us.
00:13:02.34080% of all the jobs created in the last year are created right here in Alberta.
00:13:09.340When I look right now where Alberta is, where Canada is, we really are on a roll and we want to keep it continuing.
00:13:17.340I mean no one has traditionally asked questions of this importance to citizens before in such a direct way
00:13:22.340and so I think people, when they take part in the process, are really honoured that we want their opinion and we really do.
00:13:28.340We are of course wanting them to vote for option one which is to vote to remain in Canada and we
00:13:33.380are also asking them to vote yes to the rest because we believe that that is the way for us
00:13:37.940to secure greater autonomy for Alberta within a united Canada. What really matters is if people
00:13:44.740getting to the poll to register that vote on election day. Now finally for the first time
00:13:49.620in a long time we have Canada recognizing how important Alberta is as an engine of the economy
00:13:55.380And I think with that, with finally Canada and Alberta moving together, moving in the right direction, that is going to make sure that not only Alberta, but Canada remain forever strong and free.
00:14:07.520Okay, that's all well and good, but all those things she talked about, how great it is in Alberta right now, and it's true, job creation, investment, that's in spite of the federal government, not because of the federal government.
00:14:20.160the ucp should be taking a victory lap around the federal government on this and not giving some of
00:14:26.940the credit to the federal government on this you know it feels like she's giving credit to the
00:14:32.840carny liberals for how hard the ucp have worked to get things done around the liberal government
00:14:39.520the fact that we are leading in job creation leading an investment things are better here
00:14:44.460than they are everywhere else that's because of the ucp's hard work and i it could be so much
00:14:51.820better without the anchor of canada around our leg well shayla i i can only speak personally
00:14:58.160on this file and that is to say uh i lived in alberta for two years 1985 and 1986 i loved
00:15:06.800alberta i loved the can-do spirit of the people i loved the landscape didn't really love the
00:15:13.460weather and i say that because it was the first time i experienced before halloween snow on my
00:15:18.500jack-o'-lantern but anyway uh you got to take the good with the bad here's the thing sheila and by
00:15:24.960the way if anyone in the comment section wants to change my opinion on this i would say if i was
00:15:32.240still in alberta i'm telling you i'm voting for separation i don't know what the case for canada
00:15:39.660is this is a province with trillions of dollars of economic wealth landlocked this is a province
00:15:48.280that in the last decade and a bit every time there's a federal election by the time they
00:15:53.540count the ballots at the Ontario Manitoba border uh it you know it's already a done deal the
00:15:59.160liberals are coming back uh with their policies their anti-development policies yeah I know
00:16:04.340there's memorandums of understanding when I see the shovels in the ground and the pipelines being
00:16:09.160laid, then I'll believe it. So Sheila, as someone who has spent almost his life, his whole life in
00:16:16.320Toronto area, if I were in Alberta, I would definitely vote separation. And I know you'll
00:16:23.220have those that'll say, oh, you traitor, you modern day maple leaf version of Benedict Arnold.
00:16:29.900Well, no, I, you know, I want to be in a place that succeeds. And I see the federal government
00:16:37.420being detrimental to that I only see upside in a separate nation of Alberta Sheila what would be
00:16:47.620the downside tell me I have yet to have anybody fully explain it to me like you get a lot of
00:16:54.080nostalgia people fought and died for Canada yep that is true but that version of Canada doesn't
00:17:00.840exist anymore when I think about western independence I think of it as an act of survival
00:17:05.660not just for my province and our people and our culture, but an act of preservation of those
00:17:13.600values that people are nostalgic for about a Canada that doesn't exist. Because I believe
00:17:19.380those values, many of them are still alive and well here in Alberta. They are dead in other
00:17:25.780parts of this country. It makes me sad. I wish it weren't that way. I was at the massive
00:17:32.800independence rally at the Alberta legislature over the weekend. I'm going to see if I can find
00:17:37.060a clip because I ran into Shane Nettowin. For those of you who don't know who Shane Nettowin
00:17:44.380is, he was all but abandoned by our military after he experienced catastrophic neurological
00:17:54.660injury. He was a door kicker with, I think it was JTF2. And I asked him, my video will be up
00:18:04.840later on today, but I want to show you his Veterans Affairs testimony from not too long ago.
00:18:11.960Because when I saw Shane at the legislature, I was like, oh, hey, Shane, I want to talk to you
00:18:18.200about how it feels to be called a traitor. After you were catastrophically injured serving this
00:18:24.140country you were willing to live and die for um and so you'll see his comments in my video later
00:18:29.640but um you know when people call western independence-minded people traitors this is
00:18:36.880who you're talking about too you know when jason kenney says people fought and died for this
00:18:41.220country well these are the people these are the very people who are doing everything they can to
00:18:46.000hang on to what is left of this country and they don't see it being able to be saved anywhere else
00:18:51.840I just want to show you Shane Nedowin's testimony from the House of Commons.
00:18:55.400This is probably a year ago, but it was a real treat to see Shane at the independence rally because this is the face of Jason Kenney's traitors.
00:19:06.280One of the things we keep hearing about is this term moral injury.
00:19:10.860And that that's one of these cases where it can either be a very large, like 30,000 foot problem, or it can be like right in somebody's individual life.
00:19:19.940did we do the right thing are we part of the the good guys these kinds of questions um and
00:19:26.860we we i hear often people say they don't recognize canada anymore is that do you think that that's
00:19:33.820part of the moral injury like people left went to fight for for for a country and come back and
00:19:38.800don't recognize the country they return to well since you asked the question it's not going to
00:19:43.960be a popular opinion but i don't believe in canada anywhere yeah i'm an alberton and i want to leave
00:19:50.440you and you would say that you've you fought for something i loved canada
00:19:55.740i i believed in canada until a point this and again i know it's not gonna be popular with
00:20:04.060i don't know this side of the table i guess but um the last decade has no that's not what i
00:20:12.120fought for the country i'm watching and this is my personal opinion and but it is i've heard this
00:20:18.700reflected from a lot of my fellow vets that they don't recognize like let's take afghanistan for
00:20:24.920example the canada we knew and we went to go well we believed what we were fighting i believed in
00:20:30.080what we were fighting for in afghanistan and uh we just i mean we watched it retaken by the taliban
00:30:30.000Canada's National Firearms Association's Save Firearms program offers the legal pathway to preserve what matters, while we work towards a political solution.
