00:03:02.860 party can influence the next four years and every party has a case to make and to defend. And

00:03:08.100 in Canada, the right to ask questions is never bestowed by some authority. It belongs to everybody.

00:03:30.600 enough just to simply do exactly what Justin Trudeau wants you to do on any given day. I mean,

00:03:35.060 true liberals would have been appalled by Trudeau's blackface. They'd be appalled at Trudeau's lack

00:03:40.560 of give-a-care in regards to human rights abuses in the world. So yeah, to be more accurate,

00:03:45.600 to climb to the top of the greasy pole at the CBC, you have to be partisan even more than

00:03:51.540 left-wing. To use Trudeau's favorite word when it comes to the media, you have to be a journalist

00:03:56.620 he can trust. But there are thousands of journalists at the CBC. In fact, it has more journalists than

00:04:02.360 every other media company in Canada combined. And most of them know they simply will not rise

00:04:06.940 to the top. Statistically speaking, they have no chance. And although they are overwhelmingly

00:04:12.320 liberal, and they all belong to journalism unions that are funding pro-Trudeau campaigns.

00:06:39.600 So the daily anti-Trump fever dream by Democrats, already discredited, nothing to do with Canada

00:06:46.240 in any way, by the way. It's about Trump and Joe Biden and Ukraine. No Canadian connection

00:06:50.260 at all, not a real thing in any event, totally debunked. But that's the lead item for Don

00:06:56.440 Martin to tweet about on his CTV political show. Because in Canada, that's how you do

00:07:00.740 it. And if you don't do it that way, maybe you won't get your TV license renewed, like

00:07:04.600 Sun News Network's demise. Which is all a lengthy preamble for my story today. A genuine

00:07:09.620 piece of accountability journalism by a CBC show. I know, I can't even believe I'm saying

00:07:13.920 those words. The CBC actually showed some curiosity about something, and some skepticism,

00:07:18.820 and some ingenuity, and some effort. And they challenged authority, and they actually took

00:07:23.340 on a sacred cow. Recycling. I know, nobody tell David Suzuki, or he'll fly back to Canada

00:07:28.020 on a jet and scream at some CBC managers for allowing this to happen. But it actually did

00:07:32.860 happen. We don't want to be the next cancer village. Canada's plastic recycling dumped

00:07:38.940 and burned overseas. That's the headline. And then the sub-headline, or a deck as it would

00:07:44.380 be called in the newspaper business, is Canadians would be shocked, experts says, as Marketplace

00:07:49.220 poses as fake company to expose illegal recycling. And look at that. Four reporters on the byline.

00:07:56.900 They put four reporters on the story. That's some effort. Now this may be the last we ever hear

00:08:01.820 of these reports. They'll probably be reassigned to the Iqaluit beat now after this. But for

00:08:06.520 now, let's enjoy it.

00:08:08.780 Fumes spewed from the machinery as workers, wearing only t-shirts, sandals, and no masks,

00:08:13.900 at a recycling factory in northern Malaysia, manually sorted through mountains of plastic

00:08:17.620 scrap. The workers, mainly from Bangladesh, earned around $12 a day, sometimes toiling seven

00:08:23.960 days a week.

00:08:24.500 The labor was very cheap, said one businessman, as he gave a tour to undercover CBC Marketplace

00:08:29.940 journalists, posing as plastics brokers from a fake Canadian company.

00:08:34.560 So if you haven't figured it out yet, CBC sent a whole team to Malaysia, pretending to be in the

00:08:38.940 recycling business, bringing over garbage from Canada to Malaysia that was supposed to be recycled,

00:08:44.960 like plastic, to a place they just burned it. It's insane to ship garbage halfway across the world.

00:08:50.860 But it's not actually new. As you know, it's been going on for years, many years. Countless tons

00:08:56.580 of Canadian garbage was put on ships and sent to Asia, to China, to the Philippines. Remember

00:09:02.660 that whole garbage ship business? It's a bit like the scam of carbon credits, virtue signaling

00:09:09.260 Western liberals say, oh, I did a noble thing. I put my plastic bottle in the recycle bin, not the

00:09:14.100 garbage bin. I'm practically a saint. And then they don't ask any questions about what happens to it

00:09:17.960 after that. And that plastic bottle, well, look, it makes no sense to recycle it. In terms of net

00:09:23.980 energy use, net resource use, net cost, it is more harmful to the environment. It uses more resources

00:09:31.160 to recycle it than to bury it. And of course, plastic is inert. You can bury it. An empty bottle

00:09:37.800 buried underground isn't going to poison the water aquifer. So there really isn't any reason to recycle

00:09:43.420 it. But Canadian governments ship our recycling to Asia out of sight, out of mind. And we pretend we

00:09:48.820 did something green at a great cost, of course. And instead, it's either just stored, like it was in

00:09:54.140 the Philippines, or it's burned, like in Malaysia. You know, just one day, China decided we're not

00:10:00.820 taking your crap anymore. And hundreds of millions of tons of crap suddenly had nowhere to go. We used

00:10:05.620 to ship all our recycling to China. This is not a new story. Every city in town in Canada knows that China

00:10:10.400 won't take our crap anymore. Every environment minister knows it, but everyone is still pretending

00:10:13.960 that if you put a plastic bottle or a plastic bag in a green bin, something magical will happen

00:10:18.400 to it. It won't. But too many people have a stake in that goofy system from the unionized government

00:10:24.740 workers who pick up the recycling and sort the recycling and ship the recycling to the tax collectors

00:10:30.780 who get paid in a dozen ways, to the biggest profiteers of all, environmental campaigners,

00:10:35.480 environment ministers, who get to pretend that they have healed the world. They're the biggest

00:10:39.240 scammers of all. So despite the fact that the world has been storing or burning or burying

00:10:44.320 plastic, or more likely it's just dumped in a river in India or China, despite the fact that

00:10:50.640 everyone knows that's happening, there are just too many people in power here in the West and some

00:10:55.460 established perch who have a vested interest in pretending that this recycling system is still

00:10:59.200 working. And really, what media would dare say otherwise? Do you think David Suzuki would?

00:11:03.660 Call out the BS of recycling? Well, miraculously, CBC's Marketplace did. Here's a clip from their

00:11:08.860 show. What's actually happening to our recycling? There's already been reporting on problems

00:11:15.140 within the industry. So we needed to tell a story that hadn't been told before. It had to be creative

00:11:21.700 and original. So we tackled the investigation in two ways. Going undercover as plastics dealers in

00:11:28.880 Malaysia to uncover any potential illegal activity and testing the supply chain. Buying our own plastic,

00:11:36.080 then using satellite tracking devices to see if our plastic really gets recycled. To go undercover,

00:11:43.040 we needed a believable backstory. So we created a fake plastics company called Market Plastics,

00:11:49.640 made business cards with fake names, and the premise? We were plastics dealers looking for new

00:11:55.500 business overseas, and in this case, Malaysia. Most importantly, we had to learn the recycling

00:12:02.340 lingo. And here we are at one of the Malaysian factories talking the talk.

00:12:06.780 It was good. I'll admit it. It was well planned. It was well executed. I bet it cost the CBC half a

00:12:13.140 million bucks to do it. Just the sheer manpower, all the flights and hotels. They probably spent six

00:12:17.100 months on the project. They asked some good questions, but look at this. What's missing here?

00:12:21.720 They were willing to break the law in some way to get it, like telling us to lie on import shipping

00:12:28.260 labels. I don't know. But if the government knew, they would shut it down. Illegal. That's illegal.

00:12:33.720 Yeah. One recycler even admitted to taking kickbacks to import plastic illegally.

00:12:39.120 But we uncovered more. We documented an industry often willing to put profits ahead of the

00:12:52.600 environment and its workers. Cheap labor? Cheap? Yeah. The work conditions were not good. Employees

00:13:01.200 without proper protection and potentially toxic work environments. So they're upset that people in

00:13:07.680 Malaysia are earning $12 an hour. Yeah, me too, I guess. But it's Malaysia and they're actually 0.99

00:13:14.460 foreign workers from Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in the world. That's sort of how the 1.00

00:13:18.940 third world is. And no environmental protection for those workers. Yeah, again, that environmental

00:13:24.140 protection, that's sort of a first world thing. That's something for rich countries that can afford

00:13:28.080 it. I'm sure those CBC dandies from Toronto were shocked by how dirty it is there. But that's

00:13:33.680 everywhere in the third world, everywhere that's too poor. They can't spend money making their place 1.00

00:13:40.460 clean and safe. I'm sorry, that's just the third world. That's not a recycling industry

00:13:43.880 problem. That's an everything problem in Malaysia, Bangladesh, China. I don't think these CBC reporters

00:13:49.880 get out much. Maybe they will stop complaining so much about our own Alberta oil sands, the cleanest

00:13:55.640 oil production in the world. Alberta literally requires companies to report to the government

00:14:01.860 the spill of a single liter of oil. I think these CBC reporters have never been outside of

00:14:07.340 the area you can see from the top of the CN Tower. But what questions did they not ask?

00:14:14.320 They sure are looking into scandals in Malaysia, people breaking Malaysian law. But really, to be

00:14:20.640 honest, why would I as a Canadian care about that? In fact, why would a Canadian state broadcaster

00:14:25.820 go all the way to Malaysia to do a story on Malaysian corruption or the Malaysian environment?

00:14:30.680 I really don't care. Do you? And the drama, they're hidden cameras. Good work, guys. It

00:14:37.060 made it fun. But why didn't they have the hidden cameras here in Canada? Because it is a simple

00:14:44.940 fact that this happens every day here in Canada, that Canadian recycling companies do this here

00:14:51.160 in Canada, break our Canadian laws. And surely, utterly, certainly, Canadian politicians know

00:14:57.340 all about it and wink at it. I mean, it was pretty cool setting up a fake plastic company

00:15:01.420 and fake business cards. But how about the 100 real Canadian recycling companies that are actually

00:15:08.220 doing this? Why didn't the CBC have the courage to sting some of them and save all the cost of travel

00:15:15.280 to Malaysia? If the argument is that Canadians, Canadian recycling executives, are shipping our

00:15:21.980 recycling to Malaysia, which is indisputable. Of course, that's happening. Why would you have to set up a fake

00:15:27.980 company to run it as a hypothetical when it's already happening for real? Why sting poor and powerless folks

00:15:35.960 in Malaysia? Why not sting rich and powerful people here in Canada that are shipping the stuff there?

00:15:43.880 Why not see what Canadian environment ministers here know and would say on hidden camera? Why not see

00:15:50.460 what local city politicians know? Why not go undercover and report what city bureaucrats say?

00:20:04.240 come across as much more hostile to oil and gas. She doesn't have to fake it anymore. Tell me,

00:20:11.140 are there any new Democrats there? Is Rachel Notley herself there? What kind of people? Is there anyone

00:20:16.840 from the establishment, or are they all, you know, radical, foreign-funded groups like Greenpeace?

00:21:03.240 on the side of Albertans. But she's not here today either. She's not with these climate protesters.

00:21:08.900 And I'm not sure why. There's no local NDP MLAs. Rachel Notley, she's from Edmonton, so it would

00:21:13.760 be quite the track. I'm sure she's at the Edmonton one. Maybe. I don't know. But there's

00:21:17.520 no local NDP MLAs. There's no liberal MPs here. I can't see him yet. I mean, that's the reason I came

00:21:22.600 here to speak to them. But I think maybe this group full of Antifa might even be too radical

00:21:48.720 are there any out-of-work oil and gas workers who are there to counter-protest or push back,

00:21:54.820 or are they just too busy looking for work and doing something else?
