00:21:48.340 because one of the reasons they may have been separated is we don't know if their parents really are their parents.

00:21:53.140 And that's a separate system from the intake at the Border Patrol facility.

00:22:07.020 because sometimes these illegal aliens are stuffed into the back of a sweltering truck,

00:23:27.680 So it's basically like a dormitory environment that's heavily supervised with medical personnel,

00:23:36.740 caseworkers,

00:23:37.400 administrators.

00:23:38.500 It's a full service facility for these children.

00:23:43.100 And it is not cages.

00:23:44.860 The misleading idea that children are being kept in cages was deliberately circulated by critics of the president.

00:23:53.080 It's been perpetuated not just by the left,

00:23:55.380 but by Republican critics of the president.

00:24:00.460 but there are Republicans who agree with Democrats on opening the borders wide.

00:24:18.100 But the reason that we have this phenomenon of kids getting separated from parents

00:24:29.600 whether charging them with misdemeanors for a first crossing illegally or felonies for a re-entry illegally.

00:24:44.060 you cannot incarcerate the children with the parents for safety reasons.

00:24:52.360 the state has to figure out what to do with the children.

00:24:57.420 the children are placed in alternative care.

00:25:00.420 The families are eventually reunited.

00:25:02.940 They can be reunited either by returning to their countries of origin.

00:25:05.780 So if the parents accept a misdemeanor conviction,

00:25:08.720 they're usually just released right away and they can reunite with their kids then

00:25:11.540 and go back to whichever Central American country or other country they come from.

00:25:15.540 Or if the parents decide to apply for asylum and spend longer in jail or in the country somewhere,

00:25:23.680 then the children may spend longer in the shelter.

00:25:25.940 So that's the way it works.

00:25:28.120 Nobody wants to see the parents separated from their kids,

00:25:30.880 but it is a matter of law that's been on the books for a long time for safety reasons.
