00:00:00.000 Hey guys, welcome to Relatable. Today I'm going to be sitting down with Phil Robertson of Duck
00:00:06.060 Dynasty. We're going to be talking about his new book and faith and parenting and all the stuff
00:00:11.620 going on in the country right now and why the Word of God is more important for us to stand on
00:00:16.920 than ever, or at least as it's ever been. Now we are going to talk to my new friend,
00:00:22.920 Phil Robertson. Phil, thank you so much for joining me. Hey, no problem. I'm really excited
00:00:27.300 to learn more about your book. I've already read the press release and stuff, and it looks like
00:00:31.120 something that not only I want to read, but also my audience wants to read because you talk about
00:00:36.220 the denigrating and the stealing of the American soul. So can you expound on that a little bit?
00:00:41.220 You read texts in the Bible and they are numerous. They're 2,000-year-old writings,
00:00:53.560 2,000 years ago. You're like, low, low-tech world. But big empires were there, Roman Empire.
00:01:05.960 They ruled the world.
00:01:07.560 Right.
00:01:09.320 Gigantic, you know, works of art, stadium. If you've ever seen it, I've seen it. You're like,
00:01:15.240 in writings like this. And this is what spurred me to write the book. Since they did not think it
00:01:24.020 worthwhile. He's writing to the Roman Empire, the Romans. Since they did not think it worthwhile
00:01:32.020 to retain the knowledge of God. I mean, get every vestige of God out of your psyche.
00:01:41.140 He gave them over to a depraved mind to do what ought not to be done. You say, well,
00:01:50.140 what is it that they do? Here's the list. They've become no knowledge of God. They've become filled
00:01:57.760 with every kind, filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They're
00:02:06.260 full of envy. Listen to this. Murder. You're like, murder? Murder, envy, strife, deceit,
00:02:16.000 malice, their gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, boastful. You say, it sounds
00:02:25.800 like the internet, which I've never clicked onto, ever. I don't have a cell phone. I don't see it.
00:02:33.180 I don't hear it. I'm oblivious to it. And he ends that section up by saying they disobey their
00:02:38.920 parents. And here's four words that describe Paul's writings to the Romans. So it will be up
00:02:47.760 to us to read these writings and say, I wonder if that's still pertinent today. Right. They are
00:02:53.580 the ones who say there is no God. They are senseless. What's a human being like if they're characterized
00:03:05.340 by being senseless? They're faithless. No God. They're heartless. They will slaughter their gifts
00:03:19.580 from God. Their own children. They will slaughter them. You're like, what are you doing? And they're
00:03:29.360 ruthless, heartless and ruthless. I read those texts and I'm like, whoa, be terrible times in the last
00:03:40.120 days. People be lovers of money, lovers of themselves, not lovers of good, lovers of pleasure.
00:03:46.700 And you just start down the list, you know, and you say their feet are swift to shed blood.
00:03:53.100 So I said, you know, Jesus said in John eight, the devil is the father, the father of lies and
00:04:06.500 the father of murder. So John, the apostle, and some of them would come along 5,000 years from
00:04:16.060 the first recorded murder that I know of when Cain killed his brother Abel in the field. Here's the
00:04:25.020 exact read. This is the message we've heard from the beginning. And here's what I'm trying to do.
00:04:31.740 We should love one another. Don't be like Cain. He goes back 5,000 years. Think about all the people
00:04:41.300 that have been killed in the 5,000, you know, read the old Testament. She'd say, whew. He goes back to
00:04:46.480 the first murder. Don't be like Cain who belonged to the evil one. There wasn't but four people on the
00:04:55.180 earth. Right. Adam, Eve, Cain. You're like, and they couldn't even get along. Right. They couldn't
00:05:01.220 even get it right. Don't be like Cain who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. Why did he
00:05:05.920 murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brothers were righteous. Just start there and
00:05:13.180 you say, my goodness, at the murders and the human race. So my task is to get people to understand
00:05:24.460 when they say, but if God would just say something to me, then I would know he's there.
00:05:31.900 If he would just talk to me, I'm like, what do you want him to do? Write you a letter? He's
00:05:37.760 written you 66 letters explaining who he is. And I have a book, having never used a cell phone,
00:05:46.960 but I have a thick book that's full of text messages. And it starts out by saying, God says,
00:05:56.300 I made it. Love me and love each other. How hard could it be just to get up in the morning?
00:06:06.040 I haven't sinned today. Right. I got up this morning over here at some hotel in Dallas, Texas. I'm
00:06:12.160 talking to you. You said, Phil, has there been any filthy language coming out of anybody's mouth?
00:06:16.800 Right. No, no. You said evil thoughts? No. You're like, so there's been no fits of rage? None. Has
00:06:25.500 there been any hatred? No. I'm on planet earth. I got up this morning. You say you have trained
00:06:32.540 yourself with the scriptures to just get up and be good for crying out loud. Yeah. How hard could it be?
00:06:41.620 I mean, really? I think for a lot of people, my generation, especially, they do think that it's
00:06:47.000 hard because the most important thing that we're told, and you might not have seen this since it's
00:06:51.660 mostly propagated on social media, the most important thing we're told is to feel good about
00:06:56.440 ourselves and to just be ourselves and to do what's convenient. And you quoted that passage from
00:07:01.680 Romans that talked about how people are going to be when they give up God. And you also talked about
00:07:07.060 they're going to be lovers of self. Well, the big thing today, I don't know if you've heard the term
00:07:11.340 self-love, but self-love is the big trend, even among so-called Christians, is that all you have
00:07:18.100 to do is love yourself. Then you're going to be confident and happy. But scripture has a lot to
00:07:22.740 say about self-love and how that's really not what we're called to. It's self-denial, which I think is
00:07:28.240 a lot of why we're experiencing what you're talking about. Yeah. You got to remember, you say,
00:07:33.440 so let me get this right. The prediction is made in Genesis chapter 3, verse 15, way back.
00:07:44.460 Someone from a woman, the seed of a woman will crush Satan. You say, what? What does it mean?
00:07:52.020 So from Genesis all the way through Malachi, the whole Old Testament, Jesus is coming starting in
00:08:03.340 Genesis 3. He's coming for he would be born, what they would call him, what he would say,
00:08:09.240 what he would do, prophecy after prophecy after prophecy for 5,000 years. So finally, Jesus is
00:08:16.960 coming and Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, there's a big change. Yay. Jesus is here. The one we've been
00:08:25.800 talking about for 5,000 years, Jesus is here. Well, everyone can look at him and say, what did he say?
00:08:34.920 What did he do? Why was he here? He said, I've come down to remove every mistake you've ever made.
00:08:44.460 I've come down to set you free from Satan, set you free from sin. You do have sins, don't you? Well,
00:08:54.060 yeah, I've made some mistakes. He took them all away. Set you free from the guilt of it all.
00:09:02.040 Cleanse your guilty conscience. You're like, that would be a big one. Oh, set you free from a law of
00:09:10.240 works having to be perfect and try to never make a system of law where there was no provision for sin.
00:09:20.040 There was no provision. So they kill the animals and the bulls and the goats, you say, but it never
00:09:25.300 took away their sin. It just reminded them they were guilty as charged. Jesus comes, perfect God,
00:09:33.000 mistake free, allows them to kill him. That's why he came in flesh. He let them get their hands on him.
00:09:41.280 He never makes a mistake. Alabeth, look what they did to him. They brutalized him, but he's God in a
00:09:51.280 human body. And only he was big enough to be the big enough sacrifice to get us out of them under a law of
00:09:58.500 works. Save us sin, guilt. And finally delivered us by his resurrection from the grave. Now we're
00:10:08.300 talking immortality is on the table. Freedom from sin, immortality, and all we have to do is embrace
00:10:18.880 that, repent, turn, and get up in the morning, love God, and love each other.
00:10:28.500 I'm just saying. It's not that complicated. It's not theological. It's not pie in the sky. You're
00:10:36.180 like, what a story. I'm 72. You say, so Phil, when you asked people, do you have a better story?
00:10:47.720 Really? Really? Life, peace of mind, no guilt, sins are removed. Oh man, peace of mind on planet earth.
00:11:00.040 And you know, you're going to be raised from the dead. That's not the end of you. You'll live on.
00:11:05.840 God says it's impossible for me to lie. And since there's no bigger one to swear by than me,
00:11:12.380 I'm going to swear by myself. I will deliver you from your sin and I will give you eternal life.
00:11:19.380 It's impossible for me to lie. I'm telling you, I'm going to do that. And he said, keep that as an
00:11:25.980 anchor for your soul because you have hope. Hope is an anchor for our soul. So I'm looking at the
00:11:33.460 world. I love them. Even the ones that curse me and all that, I don't hold it against them. Not at all.
00:11:39.160 Yeah. The vitriol that's directed toward me from time to time. I never hear it. I never read tweets
00:11:45.960 and I'm on the internet, but I hear that some are cursing me in bad mind, but it doesn't bother me
00:11:52.060 in the least. Think about it. Look what they did to my Lord. And he never made a mistake. I'm a sinful
00:11:58.340 man saved by the graves of God. You're like, you're going to make some mistakes. Yeah. By the way,
00:12:04.040 after he was raised from the dead, he spent 40 days to show him. He was convinced him he's alive.
00:12:09.760 Thomas didn't believe it. He said, what about it? Look at these marks. Thomas falls down in front of
00:12:17.800 him and says, my Lord and my God. It was a wonderful thing for Thomas to realize, good night.
00:12:29.940 I'm here. I watched him. I just didn't think he could beat death. So he beat death for all of us.
00:12:36.380 He goes back to where he came from. The Bible says he's there 24 seven interceding for us because when
00:12:43.880 we make mistakes and we're walking in the light and we're loving our neighbor and we're loving God,
00:12:49.280 we still are weak. So when we make a mistake, he's there 24 seven to not count, not count our mistakes
00:12:57.740 against us. That's what grace is all about. You're like, that is a good deal. Oh, it's the best deal
00:13:05.240 we're ever going to find while we're on planet earth. So I'm sitting here basking in the grace of God
00:13:11.460 saying, yeah, take a few cussings from time to time, but literally it does not bother me. In other
00:13:17.820 words, your love for your neighbor, it can't be contingent upon how they feel about you because
00:13:25.860 you'll end up. So when they curse me, I'm like, my love's not contingent on whether you love me or not.
00:13:32.920 Yeah. I love you anyway. I don't want you cursing me.
00:13:35.400 Because that's what Christ did for us while we were yet sinners. Christ died for us.
00:13:39.160 So we need to get out and about. Not so much. We shouldn't be known for people who go to church
00:13:46.980 because it's a couple of hour meeting in a structure that a big wind blew away. You see, we,
00:13:55.560 God's people, the body of Christ, we are the church. So the Paul to the Romans, he said, look,
00:14:05.120 in view of God's mercy, his death for us, his burial, resurrection, in view of that,
00:14:12.780 offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. It's not Sunday today. You and I
00:14:21.680 are not in church. We're two members of the church worshiping God with an audience listening in.
00:14:30.100 Well, they just heard, and I made sure they did. You said, you made sure they heard the gospel of
00:14:36.320 Jesus before you're going to leave here today. Yeah, it's my job. I'm a proclaimer. Check it out.
00:14:44.120 See if it's true or false. It's a story. You got one that'll top it. What? Come on out with it.
00:14:50.760 What you got? We've got removal of sin delivered from Satan, delivered from guilt,
00:14:56.840 delivered from a law of works and resurrection from the grave for crying out. What else do you want?
00:15:02.280 You're like, I mean, while you're on earth, what? Yeah. I've never heard of a story like that ever.
00:15:07.960 Have you? No, nothing like it. We're counting time by him. It's 2019 years since Jesus showed up over
00:15:15.700 here. Well, what were all the years before Jesus got here? The rednecks would say, I'm like,
00:15:21.000 they're called to all the years before Jesus got here. Right. Exactly. Everything centers on him.
00:15:28.000 One individual, whoever walked on planet earth, Jesus Christ, and he's the one our calendar's based
00:15:33.760 on. Yeah. That lets me know something. He was here. Right. He was here. No doubt.
00:15:39.940 It's not just a myth. So tell me about how you have raised four sons, lots of grandkids and great
00:15:48.080 grandkids and how you have passed down this legacy of faith to them. Since I am about to be a mom in
00:15:53.640 June. Yeah. The Lord has blessed you with the gift of life. Yes. You know, I never mentioned,
00:16:00.720 you know, I didn't know you were pregnant and I know that because one time I walked up to the,
00:16:06.100 one of the sisters, I said, well, good night, girl. I didn't know you were pregnant. And she said,
00:16:10.620 I'm not. Oh no. And I'm like, and Kay calls me out, my woman outside. She said, you idiot. Don't
00:16:15.900 ever tell her what. Okay. So you learned your lesson. I know a girl who just picked up a few pounds.
00:16:21.240 So I wasn't going to say anything. You know, I'm just going to say, yeah, I better keep my mouth shut.
00:16:25.320 So you say, how do you do it? Look, all scripture is God breathed. It's useful for teaching,
00:16:36.500 for rebuking, strong reprimand, for correcting. That's not quite the path you want to take, son.
00:16:48.080 Let me explain something to you. And for training in righteousness so that the man of God will be
00:16:55.040 thoroughly equipped for every good work. One of my sons, I'll give you his name in a minute.
00:17:01.180 He came to me one time, Alabeth, and he said, dad, he said, what are STDs? What is that?
00:17:11.800 I'm looking at him. I said, come over and sit down, son. Let me explain to you what STDs are.
00:17:18.080 So I gave him a speech on the ravages of STDs. By the way, in America, there are 110 million
00:17:36.100 Americans who are suffering from a sexually transmitted disease at any given time.
00:17:42.400 I didn't know that. CDC, Center for Disease Control. Read it. When I read it,
00:17:47.640 I like the fellow off the chair. I said, my goodness, one out of three. And some of these
00:17:53.300 things are debilitating. Some of them, death is involved in it. You're like, but none of them
00:17:58.640 are any good. So he comes and wants to find out about it. I gave him a speech and I was using
00:18:04.380 terminology in the redneck world. We just spout it out. There's microbes out there, son, running
00:18:11.760 around. And they follow that kind of behavior. People who sleep around with this one and that
00:18:17.680 one. And I said, there's microbes running around that will eat your genitals off your body.
00:18:23.420 Well, he tells the story now. And he said, my dad gave me the speech on STDs one time. He said,
00:18:32.640 y'all have to remember, I wasn't but eight.
00:18:36.080 Oh, wow. So he was probably scared to death.
00:18:40.080 So he's eight. But he said, to let everyone know in this audience tonight, he gives this story. He
00:18:48.220 said, when I started dating my girlfriend, Missy, she was one of the sisters up there at church,
00:18:56.220 got the girl. He said, when we dated, he said, I waited until we married before there was any sex
00:19:04.680 involved. He said, you know why? I never forgot that speech.
00:19:08.760 Yeah. He might've been eight, but he remembered it.
00:19:11.020 He remembered it. So he said, I remain pure until I married and I've kept my sex right there. He said,
00:19:17.800 but my dad gave me a speech one time. So a lot of what people would say, well, you're too harsh.
00:19:23.420 You shouldn't tell me. I just told him the truth.
00:19:26.520 It worked. It was effective.
00:19:28.060 It worked very effective. So I had four sons. So none of the other three ever came and told me that.
00:19:34.680 So we all sin in many ways, but you say, but there was one who got it, but you know,
00:19:42.280 that's the reason Jesus died for us to remove our sin. I used to be in my own, get drunk, get high.
00:19:47.600 I mean, until I was 28. But I repented and turned to God. And now if someone had told me
00:19:54.100 one day you'll be running around calling about Jesus, I would have thought, are you crazy?
00:20:01.180 Yeah. No one would have ever, including me, would have ever believed that.
00:20:05.680 Yeah. Any other final parenting advice? Anything specifically for girls? I heard
00:20:11.260 from a good source that you don't, you don't agree with girls wearing makeup.
00:20:15.620 With girls wearing makeup?
00:20:17.100 You don't, you don't agree with girls wearing makeup.
00:20:19.360 Nah.
00:20:19.760 Or is that not true?
00:20:20.760 Not true.
00:20:21.440 Not true. You're fine with it.
00:20:22.600 Not true. I just don't, I don't personally go into the hair and makeup room.
00:20:28.120 Yes.
00:20:28.880 Because I tell them I'm 72. It's too late. Forget all that.
00:20:33.240 Yeah.
00:20:33.480 So I'm not worried about that kind of stuff at all. See what I'm saying?
00:20:36.560 Yeah. It's not your realm.
00:20:37.920 No.
00:20:38.540 Okay. Any other final words of wisdom for us? This was so great.
00:20:42.120 Thank you for clearly articulating the gospel. I know that's your job.
00:20:46.420 Yeah. They've heard the gospel. I'll just, I'll just end with this. This is a great text.
00:20:52.080 And a lot of people get confused about this. Let no debt remain outstanding. Pay your debts.
00:20:59.860 Let no debt remain outstanding except, except, this is a debt we owe as human beings.
00:21:07.560 The continuing debt to love one another. Now watch this.
00:21:13.960 For he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled the law. All the commands. Don't do this. Don't do that. Don't do this. Don't do this.
00:21:24.740 You say, how do you deal with that? Just love your neighbor. It'll be okay.
00:21:32.560 Watch. The commandment, do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not covet.
00:21:39.940 And whatever other commandment there may be, they're summed up in this one rule.
00:21:46.620 Love your neighbor as yourself.
00:21:50.520 Love does no harm to its neighbor.
00:21:55.180 You're like, I can fulfill all those texts about don't do, don't do, don't.
00:22:00.480 If, if, if you love your neighbor, you're not going to shoot him.
00:22:08.660 You're not going to kill him.
00:22:10.480 You're not going to hate him.
00:22:12.720 You're not going to curse him.
00:22:15.480 You love him.
00:22:16.940 You say, love, it would solve the problem.
00:22:20.600 For all the things that we're told to do and not do.
00:22:26.300 That's why the two greatest commands in the Bible are love God and love your neighbor.
00:22:32.820 Alabeth, how hard could it be?
00:22:36.680 It's only difficult until you decide to do it.
00:22:41.780 You decide to do it.
00:22:43.300 You, you, you get the training from God and you say, you put it into practice all the time, wherever you are.
00:22:52.840 In the duck blind, you say, there's no mischief going on there.
00:22:56.880 No, at home, at dinnertime, we're thanking God for the meal.
00:23:01.400 We're loving one another.
00:23:02.640 You say, there's not chaos.
00:23:04.400 You don't have to live like that.
00:23:05.840 But it's a hard sell because the evil one, as I wrote in the book, is so powerful.
00:23:13.220 He lies and we buy into it.
00:23:16.680 And we, we check the color of people's skin.
00:23:22.220 From one man, Adam, God made every nation of men.
00:23:26.040 He determined the time set for them, the exact places they should live.
