00:19:26.000 Now, in a sense, there's so much to cover with you.

00:19:29.000 I want to talk a little bit about the extraordinary experience we had yesterday watching your documentary, Secret Stone, where you went into abandoned mental hospitals and creepy haunted houses and encountered paranormal activity.

00:19:44.000 Now, on one hand, I felt cynical because I've been involved in making content for a long time and thought, oh, God, no, this can't be real.

00:19:49.000 But on the other hand, there was a Power cut, a really creepy bit of the movie that made me think, oh no, maybe it is real.

00:19:56.000 So, Sean, why don't we start there, given that that's what we were talking about?

00:20:00.000 That's probably one of your early films, I reckon.

00:20:02.000 You were just in your early 20s when you started that process.

00:20:04.000 Yeah, yeah, no, I mean, going back in time, I was 2009.

00:20:11.000 I just graduated college in 2006, and I worked with my dad on a couple of films in Alexander.

00:20:17.000 I'd shot the behind the scenes, I went to shoot behind the scenes on W. About George W. Bush, and I got to work with him in the editing room.

00:20:25.000 So then I went to work with him after that on his Untold History of the United States documentary series.

00:20:30.000 It's a very thorough 10 part series.

00:20:33.000 Yeah, that's amazing.

00:20:34.000 You've seen that one, right?

00:20:35.000 Yeah.

00:20:36.000 You know, deconstructing some of our foreign policy over the last hundred years, let's say the American foreign policy.

00:20:41.000 So I worked with him for about a year editing, and then I was just like, I'm done.

00:20:46.000 I can't work for you anymore.

00:20:48.000 I need to have my own vision.

00:20:50.000 It was just too.

00:20:51.000 Why was it like working with your dad?

00:20:53.000 I've met him like a couple of times in these.

00:20:55.000 Obviously, Oliver Stone, the filmmaker, very famous, one of the most successful contemporary filmmakers.

00:21:01.000 My experience of him was he was charismatic and very, very intense.

00:21:05.000 And the office that I met him in, which was his office, smelled heavily of marijuana.

00:21:09.000 Those are my main observations.

00:21:11.000 Well, that's true.

00:21:13.000 That's true.

00:21:14.000 He functions very well on marijuana.

00:21:15.000 So, why was it difficult for you to work with him?

00:21:18.000 It was difficult for me because, for multiple reasons.

00:21:21.000 You know, one, when you have your own ambition or direction, you know, as a creator, um, It's difficult to just take commands from someone else.

00:21:31.000 And fundamentally, that was a big, you know, that was a huge project.

00:21:34.000 He's, you know, a 10 part documentary series, and the scripts kept changing.

00:21:38.000 And he was busy because his attention was drawn to Wall Street 2 at that point.

00:21:43.000 He'd been finishing W, he went to Wall Street 2 next.

00:21:46.000 And it was like he was dual focused.

00:21:48.000 And so I would come with a cut based on the script, and he wasn't happy with it.

00:21:52.000 And it's like, well, that's the script you gave me.

00:21:54.000 So I felt very much like I needed to clear, I didn't want to sit in the editing room.

00:21:59.000 And twiddle around and play with something that didn't feel like it was mine and didn't feel like it was clearly directed in the sense that it took my dad five years ultimately to make that.

00:22:08.000 So the editor that sat there for five years had to go through probably 50 cuts, and I didn't have the patience.

00:22:14.000 So I wanted to go do my own thing.

00:22:17.000 And that's when I connected with Alex Wraith, who I met through my father on the set of Wall Street 2 in New York.

00:22:25.000 And he was telling us ghost stories when I met the guy, and he was like, Yeah, I go, you know, he's a Jersey kid.

00:22:31.000 He's like, I go.

00:22:31.000 Go hang out in this place called Greystone, which is a very famous mental hospital in New Jersey.

00:22:38.000 What's his name?

00:22:38.000 Woody Guthrie was there, for example.

00:22:41.000 Do you think in that new film, then?

00:22:43.000 That's Greystone.

00:22:44.000 That's Greystone, where Woody Guthrie, the great American songwriter and folk musician and hero, are in those scenes where Bob Dylan is visiting Woody Guthrie in hospital.

00:22:54.000 That's Greystone, New Jersey.

00:22:56.000 So it's one of those famous old institutions.

00:22:59.000 Now, one of the things I was struck by when watching your film, Stone Street, sorry, Secret Stone, that you were making while making Greystone, because you were involved in two projects the scripted horror movie.

00:23:13.000 That you were scouting locations for when you encountered these places was I started to think about like mental institutions and the sort of now accepted fact that both the MI5 in my country and the CIA in yours have got the MKUltra programs, they acknowledge that they took people from mental hospitals and did like experiments on them.

00:23:34.000 So weird stuff goes on, weird creepy stuff, hot cold pressure baths, and what do they call them?

00:23:41.000 Like you know, basically experimentation.

00:23:44.000 Now, Greystone, I don't think was listed in the MKUltra documents, but remember.

00:23:49.000 The mind control projects, and there were multiple, it wasn't just MKUltra, it was the most famous one, but they were working with a number of foundations and institutions all the way into Canada.

00:24:00.000 And I don't think Greystone was ever listed in what I've seen, but most of those documents were shredded.

00:24:05.000 So we don't know the full extent of who was involved in those experiments.

00:24:12.000 But certainly the nature of the mental hospitals leads itself to abuse.

00:24:18.000 And that's why Greystone was shut down.

00:24:20.000 It was shut down for abuse of patients.

00:24:23.000 Oh, really?

00:24:24.000 So that's like explicit and understood.

00:24:26.000 Yeah, yeah.

00:24:27.000 And so, and I can't remember if it closed in the 70s or 80s, but basically a lot of these old hospitals got shut down.

00:24:34.000 And then you go there 20 years later, they're abandoned for 20 plus years.

00:24:38.000 And you walk in the door, and the lights are on, and all the paperwork and the furniture.

00:24:42.000 It's like someone left five minutes ago in a hurry.

00:24:46.000 It was very spooky to walk into that energy and to explore, which we did multiple times.

00:24:51.000 And as you see with the documentary, we document.

00:24:54.000 Those incursions into these different locations and how the high strangeness just escalates.

00:25:01.000 It escalates and escalates.

00:25:03.000 And I think you have to kind of go with the journey, as I told you, of the documentary.

00:25:07.000 Like, you think, oh, well, this is made up.

00:25:09.000 And then you start to see, no, this is not made up.

00:25:12.000 There's something very serious here.

00:25:15.000 And we encountered it.

00:25:16.000 And even if you think any of it was staged, which I never staged any of it, but even if you think it was, I know that there are things that could not have been staged.

00:25:25.000 There was no way that, you know, there was no way it could have been staged or something else at work.

00:25:31.000 Yeah, because in that film, Secret Stone, those of you that haven't seen it, and we do a watch along, so you can, on this channel, you can click the link in the description now and you can watch Sean's film.

00:25:42.000 What I was really struck by is this I am Christian and therefore believe in the supernatural.

00:25:49.000 Even before coming to Christ, I believed in supernatural activity.

00:25:53.000 I've had some unusual and strange encounters in my life, and if you, Are a devout person, you accept realms of angels and demons.

00:26:02.000 And when we watch it, and also in the post Epstein file age, we've all got to be open to the levels of corruption that likely incorporate not only the exploitation that takes place in these institutions where exhausted and weary staff kid old people and mentally ill people, that kind of thing we're familiar with, but it sort of seems like there's a tacit, not tacit, sort of.

00:26:28.000 Implicit and ongoing relationship between children's homes and mental hospitals and weird occultist sexually exploitative stuff.

00:26:37.000 There's many examples of it in the UK.

00:26:40.000 And more anecdotally, I've been struck by how, when listening to mentally ill people, and I have to listen to them a lot because I am one and I hang around with them, like how often they have anecdotes that have consistent themes in them, like mentally ill people sort of talking about being monitored and machines and encounters with entities that remind me sort of of things I've heard from people describing psychedelic encounters.

00:27:04.000 So I've struck, therefore, Sean, in a way, by my own cynicism and my own reluctance.

00:27:10.000 When I was watching the film, there are really scary bits where Sean's in an alleged haunted house where terrible, murderous, and awfully abusive things were alleged to have taken place, both in terms of lore and legend.

00:27:25.000 And some things I think were a matter of public record.

00:27:27.000 And then while Alex and Sean were there, there are mad, eerie screams and smashes.

00:27:33.000 But my sort of reaction, first of all, me and Jake were like, oh man, we're freaking out, I'm really into it.

00:27:38.000 Then there's a certain point where I'm like, no, I'm not having this.

00:27:40.000 This is filmmaking.

00:27:41.000 I can't go any further.

00:27:42.000 And I was.

00:27:43.000 Sort of unsure which part of myself to listen to.

00:27:46.000 The skepticism that's generally protective, like a self protection mechanism when it comes to not wanting to look foolish or feel as if you've been duped, but also recognizing that I know there's more to reality than what is superficial and acknowledged.

00:28:02.000 Well, it's like we were talking about you've seen possession in different forms.

00:28:07.000 If you've seen it with alcoholism or drugs or multiple personality disorders, I mean, all of this is indicative of something going on within the psyche that.

00:28:18.000 It's like you are no longer you, whatever we consider ourselves to be, that is the great mystery, is no longer in charge, right?

00:28:25.000 When you see that take place in someone.

00:28:28.000 And so in the film, we show cases, instances where people are taken over moment to moment.

00:28:33.000 It's not like with alcohol where they get to a certain point and you look in that person and their eyes are black and they're screaming or saying something that the next day they don't remember.

00:28:44.000 That's a type of possession.

00:28:45.000 But in the case of the film, we see it.

00:28:48.000 Instantaneously, it's like a flip of a switch, and right, and then you know the eyes change the behavior.

00:28:57.000 Yeah, what was that?

00:28:58.000 It's almost like the house became a kind of contagion, like that young woman that you were there with.

00:29:03.000 She had some sort of freaky experience.

00:29:04.000 Your mate Alex, who I thought was a bit, in fact, we'll probably drop a clip in for the version of this.

00:29:09.000 Yeah, like the one of the reasons I was particularly resistant was because your mate Alex was.

00:29:15.000 I went to a drama school myself, like in my late teens and early 20s, and I was really recognized.

00:29:21.000 What I would call actory behavior, sort of like a man, something's going on here.

00:29:27.000 Like he smashes his head on a cabinet and stuff.

00:29:30.000 And I thought, that's what I would do if I was in there.

00:29:32.000 I'd dramatize this and I'd make it about me.

00:29:34.000 Oh, for sure, for sure.

00:29:35.000 He definitely played into that.

00:29:36.000 But the thing with acting is like when Denzel talked about, you know, he getting ready for his role in glory, he's like, he wasn't hitting the mark.

00:29:45.000 There was a ghostly sound right then in the room, Sean.

00:29:48.000 Mertz, capture that.

00:29:49.000 What happened?

00:29:50.000 A book?

00:29:54.000 Jumped off the table.

00:33:11.000 Well, after we prayed together as a family and we noticed what it brought up for us as a family like the kids not listening, not sitting still, mucking around.

00:34:38.000 When it was weird, I used to keep it just by the bed.

00:34:40.000 When it was booze, I used to keep it by the bed.

00:34:48.000 And of course, addiction is the material expression of the longing for God.

00:34:52.000 Anyway, nonetheless, I am so fallen and so broken, and I was so impatient, so disappointed that our kids couldn't just sit still and participate in some pretty rudimentary prayer.

00:35:00.000 But it led to a good experience because when I stormed off tempestuously to be alone, I said, Laura, I think you're going to have to handle this.

00:35:08.000 Yeah.

00:35:09.000 Tell us.

00:35:09.000 So, what I did was I sat the girls down and I explained to them.

00:35:13.000 The same way that when I homeschool them and they don't listen, it feels really demoralizing.

00:35:21.000 It feels very, very difficult for me to continue with the same sort of enthusiasm to teach them one thing on one day, for them to not listen, and for me to keep saying, you know, come on, girls, sit down.

00:35:38.000 Now listen, read that back, repeat that back to me.

00:35:40.000 What did I say?

00:35:42.000 And when it's all just mucking around, And all that, I just start to sort of give up.

00:35:47.000 And it makes me.

00:35:48.000 And I said, but the problem is, or at least here, we have an opportunity because you cannot give up on prayer and you will not give up.

00:35:56.000 We're going to do it as a family.

00:35:57.000 Because I said, because of when I went, I'm not going to pray with you guys anymore.

00:36:00.000 Yeah, you did say that.

00:36:01.000 You said, I can't pray with you anymore if it's going to be.

00:36:03.000 But also, I knew you weren't really meaning that because we pray before meals and we still pray at night.

00:36:07.000 And what I said to them is, it's very important for us to have that moment as a family.

00:36:12.000 And that's a positive change for us to have a quiet moment in the morning.

00:36:17.000 Otherwise, we find our own children have they go into their stuff, either it's sort of asking for snacks or wanting to watch something.

00:36:26.000 They want a screen or they want a snack.

00:36:28.000 Screens or snacks.

00:36:29.000 The world.

00:36:29.000 Right away, yeah.

00:36:30.000 So, in order to try and get into a much more kind of organic flow of the day and natural place to start from, a foundation for the day, if you will, prayer is important.

00:36:42.000 And I find it difficult too.

00:36:44.000 And I started by saying that I said, I find it difficult to stay still.

00:36:47.000 I find it difficult to not be agitated if a fly comes across.

00:36:51.000 Like, if I feel like something lands on me, or if I want to bite my nails, or if I want to fidget and poke a bit of hair and all the stuff, or if my knees hurt, if we're preying on our knees, for example, it hurts.

00:37:02.000 And so you have to kind of go through that and like work out how to get comfortable.

00:37:07.000 So I sat them down and I said, right, we are going to have a positive morning working through how to pray.

00:37:14.000 So what we did was we started with being still.

00:37:17.000 And what I realized is the being still was the problem.

00:37:22.000 So when I asked them to be still, one of our daughters was pretty good at it, but had a lot going on in her mind.

00:37:29.000 So what I said was just be still for a minute, close your eyes.

00:37:33.000 Every time something agitates you, annoys you, or you get distracted, I want you to say what the thing is.

00:37:39.000 So, one of our daughters was saying, you know, elbow, knee, headache.

00:37:44.000 Brilliant.

00:37:44.000 Things like that.

00:37:45.000 Such an amazing technique that you came up with there.

00:37:48.000 There's a Bible verse for that, in fact.

00:37:50.000 It's in the letters of Paul.

00:37:51.000 Take every thought captive.

00:37:53.000 That's right.

00:37:54.000 Take every thought captive.

00:37:55.000 Pay attention to your thoughts.

00:37:56.000 Like, yeah, go, what is that thought?

00:37:58.000 You're not good enough.

00:37:59.000 What is this thought? 0.96

00:38:00.000 I'd want to use drugs.

00:38:01.000 What is this thought? 0.79

00:38:01.000 I like looking at pornography. 0.79

00:38:03.000 What is this thought?

00:38:05.000 I'm better than that person or this.

00:38:06.000 Person should do this or that, take them captive and interrogate them for it.

00:38:10.000 Look, I'm even holding a pistol to that thought said, but it's only these are only thoughts in my own mind, you know.

00:38:15.000 Like, so I said, What are you doing in there?

00:38:17.000 And like, you actually instinctively discovered that.

00:38:19.000 Yeah, because what I realized is if they cannot stay still, then they can't be in the moment because it's all about it's everything else.

00:38:27.000 They're overstimulated.

00:38:29.000 So we could see, I could see that one of our daughters was good at sitting still, but had a lot going on internally, like, you know, the elbow, the knee, the headache.

00:38:36.000 But given that exercise of just listing it was just listing it, yeah.

00:38:39.000 So that was where we went with.

00:38:41.000 One daughter. 1.00

00:38:41.000 Then the other daughter, who she was like getting her feet up on the table. 1.00

00:38:45.000 Why won't you name the daughters?

00:38:47.000 Why are you being all mysterious about the daughters?

00:38:50.000 Because actually, I was thinking this and I was thinking, well, they're our daughters.

00:38:53.000 Or you want to keep them private?

00:38:54.000 Well, it doesn't, not so much keep up private, but it's sort of their stuff as well.

00:38:58.000 Oh, it's their private, yeah, it's their private internal worlds and stuff.

00:39:02.000 So anyway, then one other daughter, she was like putting her feet up on the table.

00:39:07.000 Could be a daughter.

00:39:07.000 Could have been a bloke at a bus stop.

00:39:11.000 Could be a daughter, one daughter, putting her feet up on the table. 0.55

00:39:15.000 Would not shut her eyes, like literally could not stop looking around, scratching, biting nails, doing stuff.

00:39:21.000 And I was like, Look, just please sit still, get comfortable.

00:39:26.000 She's like, Well, I'm not comfortable on the chair.

00:39:27.000 I said, Well, make yourself comfortable.

00:39:29.000 And I said, And the same applies when we pray in the morning.

00:39:31.000 If you go to and you know it's prayer, grab a pillow or a blanket and make sure that when we pray, you're seated or you're sitting comfortably, or if we're around a table or whatever it is.

00:39:42.000 Because sometimes you just get into a position because you're just there and then and you want to rush into it and you're just sort of hum.

00:39:48.000 And then you realize, like us with our knees, when we're doing this, yeah, be comfortable.

00:39:51.000 Otherwise, you can't be in the moment, you can't be comfortable, you'll be agitated the whole time.

00:39:55.000 So, a lot of Zen masters, though, lore they give you a whack, yeah, they teach with wax.

00:40:01.000 I'm not teaching with lashings and wax, but I can imagine that that's pretty good because you're tested.

00:40:06.000 I just feel for children, the idea of like trying to get them to be still and be calm and close their eyes is such a big hurdle, but then trying to get them used to the idea of enjoying the discomfort is a whole different thing.

00:40:22.000 For later in life, be still and know that I'm God.

00:40:25.000 Yeah, be still and take every thought captive.

00:40:27.000 Yeah, seek the first of the kingdom of God, and all this and his righteousness will be granted unto you.

00:40:31.000 Yeah, all of this is in scripture.

00:40:32.000 And I noticed when I took them to church today, our three kids, thankfully, one of the people that works here came with us and helped.

00:40:38.000 Um, they were really well behaved, better behaved than they are when we go to church in anglophonic countries.

00:40:44.000 Yeah, that's interesting.

00:40:45.000 They just sat there and behaved themselves.

00:40:47.000 Yeah, amidst the unbelievable singing.

00:40:50.000 Yeah, but it makes me wonder.

00:40:52.000 Like in a place where there is a lot less civilization, a lot less institutionalism, a lot less cultural ephemera, a lot less distraction, the spirit is coming through so powerful.

00:41:02.000 Like, and we go to churches in places where, you know, Bible Belt, you know, places where the, you know, but the singing is better than England.

00:41:09.000 Oh, yeah, it's a chorus, it's a quiet. 0.87

00:41:17.000 These people are like, like God is roaring out of their lower chakras.

00:41:23.000 What's funny, actually, the two.

00:41:27.000 Bible set, well, one was a church service and one was a choir performance or recital that we saw here.

00:41:35.000 And both said the singing or the sermon will be in the native language.

00:41:40.000 Let the Holy Spirit translate it for you.

00:41:45.000 I really like that because that can actually apply even when it's in your own language.

00:41:57.000 I don't know nothing about putting your fishing nets in the water and getting some fish out.

00:42:01.000 I don't know nothing about moving a mountain with a mustard seed of faith unless I let the Holy Spirit interpret it or taking every force captive.

00:42:08.000 I mean, when you read this stuff in King James language, it just sounds like sort of Shakespeare, which we know is sort of magnificent poetry.

00:42:14.000 But what is poetry?

00:42:14.000 Poetry is the ability to create meaning that goes beyond the literal signifiers on the page or even the signifiers that appear in the mind to conjure images that reach down to the source of reality.
