00:04:05.560 About the question of why someone becomes a Jesuit, myself included, I can only remark that it is

00:06:16.900 Somehow, for reasons that I could by no means calculate, it seems that I was doing what

00:06:24.380 I ought to be doing without worrying too much about it.

00:06:28.640 And to this position, I eventually add Chesterton's famous quip that if a thing is worth doing,

00:06:46.200 But I never had any doubts that among the sinful and finite creatures that God somehow put in

00:06:57.700 So you've written extensively about lifelong learning, and not in the sense of learning

00:07:02.620 new practical skills so much, though there is a place for that, but learning and pondering

00:07:09.780 But it seems many people in our society either don't want to do that or simply have never

00:07:19.320 And is it that the contemplative life is hard, or is it something else?

00:07:37.400 This passage has become more obscure today when the culture often seems to advise that the

00:07:47.800 only way that one can save his souls or to do anything important is to change the world

00:07:59.360 outside of ourselves.

00:08:00.740 That latter view is rather Marxist in flavor, a placing of practice over thought.

00:08:10.660 Before we go out and do something, we ought to know how to do it, and even more importantly,

00:08:33.820 Learning and pondering the great ideas of humanity, as you put it, are not just pastimes or curiosities.

00:08:45.920 The famous political philosopher Leo Strauss often remarked that the trouble with great ideas

00:08:54.780 and great books is that they contradict each other, and thus it is easy for us to end up skeptics

00:09:02.940 if we are not convinced that the purpose of thought and action has to do with truth,

00:09:13.320 Philosophy is not just reading or thinking about philosophers.

00:09:24.180 The contempt of life is hard in the same sense that playing golf is hard.

00:10:34.200 To go back to golf, it and tennis are two sports that it is well to learn while we are young,
