Summary

Looking out on the cultural wasteland that surrounds us, it can be difficult for many to understand how we arrived at our current moment. While centrists and moderate liberals express their amazement at what they see as the sudden and radical decline in the quality of American life, they should realize that they were warned about the inevitable consequences they are currently witnessing.

00:00:30.660 Looking out on the cultural wasteland that surrounds us,
00:00:33.780 it can be difficult for many to understand how we arrived at our current moment.
00:00:38.380 Gender ideology is pushed on kindergartners.
00:00:41.060 Sex changes are pushed on teenagers.
00:00:43.400 Riots receive the sanction of the government.
00:00:45.820 Borders are wide open to human traffickers.
00:00:48.340 And homeless encampments filled with drug users
00:00:50.760 have become a regular feature of major American cities.
00:00:54.540 While centrists and moderate liberals often express their amazement
00:00:58.200 at what they see as the sudden and radical decline in the quality of American life,
00:01:02.980 they should realize that they were warned about the inevitable consequences they are currently witnessing.
00:01:07.940 For decades, cultural conservatives sounded the alarm about the disastrous direction the nation would take
00:01:14.620 if it abandoned its moral and cultural traditions.
00:01:17.640 But those warnings fell on deaf ears.
00:01:20.460 Cultural tastemakers assured the population that they were too sophisticated to be bound by the small-minded
00:01:27.080 and primitive mores of their social inferiors.
00:01:30.320 And now the cost is coming due.
00:01:33.360 Status signaling is a very powerful tool.
00:01:36.780 People naturally want to be seen as interesting,
00:01:39.800 desirable, sophisticated, and worthy of respect.
00:01:42.820 No one wants to be seen as simple, foolish, or low-class.
00:01:48.060 Individuals instinctually look to those at the top of the social hierarchy
00:01:52.180 to understand what their society perceives as upper-class,
00:01:56.220 what is worthy of emulation.
00:01:58.500 Despite what our trite cultural propaganda tells you,
00:02:02.000 most people are not unique and delicate snowflakes
00:02:05.020 who generate their own perceptions of social value a priori.
00:02:09.160 Instead, they look to those who have achieved higher social standing,
00:02:14.300 assume that those individuals know something the average person doesn't know,
00:02:18.300 and adjust their behavior accordingly.
00:02:20.800 This is not to insult or belittle anyone for this behavior.
00:02:25.540 It is a natural and easily observable pattern that everyone falls into, myself included.
00:02:32.000 There is no virtue in denying the truth of human behavior.
00:02:35.860 And by being honest about these facts,
00:02:38.640 we can gain a greater understanding about how we arrived
00:02:41.780 at our current state of cultural decline.
00:02:45.300 Traditions are the avenue through which societies transmit their collective knowledge.
00:02:51.000 Lessons that were learned at great cost by our ancestors
00:02:54.460 are encoded deep in our psyches through moral values, rituals, and taboos.
00:02:59.500 This social continuity, this great chain of being,
00:03:03.680 is one of the key things that binds a group together
00:03:06.420 and makes them a cohesive people or nation.
00:03:09.220 It is what grants us identity, purpose, and a sense of belonging.
00:03:13.660 If you want to fundamentally transform a society
00:03:17.220 to grant you or your group more power,
00:03:20.260 one of the most effective things you can do
00:03:22.580 is work to alter the underlying traditions and morals of that society.
00:03:27.240 But achieving this is harder than it sounds.
00:03:31.020 These truths are usually deeply ingrained in the fabric of a society.
00:03:35.620 They are woven at every level into the day-to-day existence of the average person.
00:03:41.380 These traditions inform family formation,
00:03:44.400 religious observances, workplace interactions,
00:03:47.420 artistic pursuits, and even casual entertainment.
00:03:50.140 The project of replacing those values
00:03:52.980 must alter the moral framework
00:03:55.160 that guides the lives of members of that civilization.
00:03:58.920 And the best way to do that
00:04:00.320 is to hijack the system of social signaling.
00:04:03.760 So you've always been picky about your produce.
00:04:06.460 But now you find yourself checking every label
00:04:08.560 to make sure it's Canadian.
00:04:10.620 So be it.
00:04:11.900 At Sobeez, we always pick guaranteed fresh Canadian produce first.
00:04:15.960 Restrictions apply.
00:04:16.920 See in-store or online for details.
00:04:18.660 As we established previously,
00:04:23.840 most people will look to those above them in the social hierarchy
00:04:27.520 to understand what behaviors are rewarded by their culture.
00:04:31.780 For much of human history, however,
00:04:34.000 the common people did not regularly interact
00:04:36.700 with the cultural elites of their society.
00:04:39.960 Aristocrats might seek to lead by example,
00:04:42.880 but there was no way for them to constantly influence
00:04:45.560 the day-to-day perceptions and interactions of the average person.
00:04:50.380 The era of mass communication
00:04:52.420 has altered that relationship considerably.
00:04:55.620 The process that first began with newspaper and radio
00:04:58.860 has radically accelerated through movies, television,
00:05:02.420 the internet,
00:05:03.240 and now its ultimate incarnation,
00:05:05.840 social media.
00:05:06.620 These technologies allow America's elites
00:05:10.020 to deliver a constant stream of propaganda.
00:05:13.580 An omnipresent pipeline of elite influence
00:05:16.320 is disseminated to American citizens
00:05:18.540 every moment of every day.
00:05:21.900 Cultural tastemakers from the coasts
00:05:24.220 can now reach deep into the heartland
00:05:26.480 and shape the values of communities
00:05:28.360 that they will never see or visit,
00:05:30.940 much less care about or understand.
00:05:32.800 This media apparatus has been used steadily over time
00:05:37.560 to undermine the moral traditions of the United States
00:05:40.460 and ruthlessly mock those who noticed.
00:05:44.020 The idea that Hollywood does not share
00:05:46.500 or promote conservative values
00:05:48.460 is not an earth-shattering revelation.
00:05:51.100 The average Republican voter
00:05:52.540 has lamented this fact for decades,
00:05:55.000 but it's worth taking the time
00:05:56.500 to analyze a particularly important aspect
00:05:58.880 of the left's media strategy,
00:06:00.720 coding the culture war as low class.
00:06:04.560 Make no mistake,
00:06:05.860 progressives have understood for a very long time
00:06:08.340 that they're in a war for America's culture.
00:06:11.240 They take every opportunity to portray
00:06:13.800 those who are spreading the left-wing gospel
00:06:16.620 as virtuous, sophisticated,
00:06:19.080 and deserving of higher social standing
00:06:21.420 in all forms of media.
00:06:23.260 The left used to pretend to be
00:06:25.140 the champion of the working class,
00:06:27.580 but curiously,
00:06:28.560 one never sees an Appalachian coal miner
00:06:31.460 championing the progressive causes
00:06:33.380 in movies or television.
00:06:35.700 Every character parroting back
00:06:37.760 democratic talking points
00:06:39.380 is a well-spoken college graduate
00:06:41.940 who is frustrated because they must educate
00:06:44.620 their community of backward intolerant rubes.
00:06:48.580 Despite being portrayed as underdogs,
00:06:51.440 progressive characters are coded as high status,
00:06:54.480 with only their racial or sexual identities
00:06:57.700 indicating that they might be subjected to oppression.
00:07:02.020 In reality,
00:07:03.040 we know that these characteristics
00:07:04.640 would actually grant the individual's
00:07:06.900 special privileges and protections,
00:07:09.160 but this status sleight of hand
00:07:11.120 allows those at the top of the social hierarchy
00:07:13.780 to obfuscate their privilege.
00:07:15.720 Wealthy, well-educated,
00:07:18.860 high-status people
00:07:20.020 get to portray themselves
00:07:21.340 as victims of poor,
00:07:23.620 lower-status people
00:07:24.860 if they are deemed sufficiently diverse,
00:07:27.540 or a more clarifying term
00:07:29.080 might be holy.
00:07:31.360 Conservative views, in contrast,
00:07:33.820 only ever issue
00:07:35.060 from the mouths of characters
00:07:36.860 who are coded as ignorant,
00:07:39.020 backward, and low-class.
00:07:41.580 Warnings about moral decay
00:07:43.500 or loss of national identity
00:07:45.300 are delivered by cruel,
00:07:47.500 poorly-spoken,
00:07:48.600 blue-state characters
00:07:49.660 of those who issue
00:07:51.060 from locations deemed undesirable,
00:07:53.960 like rural towns and trailer parks.
00:07:57.620 These individuals serve as heels,
00:08:00.840 totems of hate held up for mockery
00:08:03.200 and ridicule
00:08:04.140 so that the audience can feel
00:08:05.680 both sophisticated and morally superior
00:08:08.580 for disapproving of the character's
00:08:10.840 disgusting behavior.
00:08:12.460 This shared moment
00:08:14.760 of collective disapproval
00:08:16.580 for those beneath them
00:08:18.120 forges a cultural bond
00:08:20.020 in the audience,
00:08:21.200 pushing them away
00:08:22.220 from their previous understanding
00:08:23.940 of traditional morality,
00:08:25.580 which is now perceived
00:08:26.680 as low-status,
00:08:28.200 and towards the new,
00:08:29.680 high-status moral framework.
00:08:32.520 The idea of infinite moral progress
00:08:35.200 is particularly useful
00:08:37.040 to the left in this regard.
00:08:39.300 There's always a hierarchy
00:08:41.140 to disassemble,
00:08:42.540 always another barrier
00:08:43.740 to take down,
00:08:45.140 always something sacred
00:08:46.420 for the revolution
00:08:47.440 to devour.
00:08:48.880 The simple fact
00:08:49.720 that a restriction
00:08:50.500 or tradition is old
00:08:52.040 is self-incriminating,
00:08:53.820 a justification for it
00:08:55.260 to be torn down.
00:08:56.940 Who cares what ancient evil
00:08:58.560 it might be holding in check?
00:09:00.980 The tactic of status signaling
00:09:03.200 is particularly effective
00:09:04.700 when it comes to suppressing
00:09:06.140 pattern recognition.
00:09:07.260 The media regularly portrays
00:09:10.620 completely rational observations
00:09:12.740 about consistent patterns
00:09:14.760 as the hyperbolic ramblings
00:09:16.960 of the terminally low class,
00:09:19.360 who are engaged
00:09:20.620 in the slippery slope fallacy.
00:09:23.180 The only problem
00:09:24.220 is that these people
00:09:25.380 have a very annoying habit
00:09:27.300 of being correct.
00:09:29.520 In fact,
00:09:30.220 the only heir
00:09:31.120 of the religious right movement
00:09:32.700 of the 1980s and 90s,
00:09:34.780 who are to this day
00:09:36.360 viciously derided,
00:09:38.140 is that they underestimated
00:09:39.720 what was to come.
00:09:41.760 Even those
00:09:42.560 evangelical grandparents
00:09:44.140 who warned you
00:09:44.960 that the redefinition
00:09:46.040 of marriage
00:09:46.720 would have disastrous
00:09:47.880 consequences
00:09:48.720 would not have predicted
00:09:50.100 drag queen story hour
00:09:51.680 or puberty blockers
00:09:52.900 for eight-year-olds.
00:09:54.420 Who could forget
00:09:55.200 the mocking of parents
00:09:56.380 concerned about
00:09:57.140 the war on Christmas?
00:09:58.660 Or the famous
00:09:59.460 South Park episode
00:10:00.660 insulting working-class
00:10:02.240 Americans worried
00:10:03.380 that unrestricted
00:10:04.640 immigration would result
00:10:06.060 in the loss
00:10:06.800 of economic opportunity
00:10:08.220 for the current population?
00:10:10.260 All of these concerns
00:10:11.420 were valid.
00:10:12.580 All of them came to pass.
00:10:14.600 But those who noticed
00:10:15.800 that the emperor
00:10:16.460 was wearing no clothes
00:10:17.980 were shouted down
00:10:19.160 and dismissed.
00:10:20.520 This practice is,
00:10:21.780 of course,
00:10:22.220 alive and well
00:10:23.300 in the current year.
00:10:24.900 Even as the more dire
00:10:26.340 predictions of those
00:10:27.620 who were mocked
00:10:28.480 in the past
00:10:29.220 come true before our eyes,
00:10:31.040 those who dare to notice
00:10:32.700 are labeled
00:10:33.380 conspiracy theorists
00:10:34.820 or purveyors
00:10:35.580 of misinformation.
00:10:37.520 The public is told
00:10:38.480 that critical race theory
00:10:39.700 is not being taught
00:10:40.640 in schools,
00:10:41.840 sex recignment surgeries
00:10:42.980 are not being performed
00:10:44.340 on young teens,
00:10:45.940 and politicians
00:10:46.640 are not using
00:10:47.780 illegal immigration
00:10:48.860 to permanently alter
00:10:50.240 elections in the United States.
00:10:52.800 Those who notice
00:10:53.880 are dismissed
00:10:54.640 as dangerous
00:10:55.740 QAnon conspiracy theorists
00:10:57.920 until the evidence
00:10:59.040 becomes overwhelming,
00:11:00.080 and then the leftists
00:11:01.480 celebrate these victories
00:11:02.960 as if they had never
00:11:04.320 denied them
00:11:05.080 in the first place.
00:11:06.800 Many in the GOP establishment,
00:11:09.160 and sadly,
00:11:10.040 even in the
00:11:10.660 New Right,
00:11:11.660 as it's come to be called,
00:11:13.220 insist that these issues
00:11:14.660 that deeply impact
00:11:15.980 the well-being
00:11:16.620 of their voters
00:11:17.400 should be ignored
00:11:18.560 because they're
00:11:19.740 lowbrow distractions.
00:11:21.720 The good news
00:11:22.540 is that this tactic
00:11:23.680 seems to have reached
00:11:24.800 a point of diminishing returns,
00:11:27.420 first with the rise
00:11:28.540 of the populist movement
00:11:29.960 and Donald Trump,
00:11:31.240 than with the organic
00:11:32.320 pushback by parents
00:11:33.600 against gender ideology
00:11:35.200 and critical race theory
00:11:36.640 in schools.
00:11:37.960 The stakes are too high
00:11:39.540 and the time is too short
00:11:41.300 to be shamed into silence.
00:11:44.000 Some politicians,
00:11:45.360 like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis,
00:11:47.500 have been able
00:11:48.100 to take action
00:11:49.100 on these issues,
00:11:50.400 but the right will need
00:11:51.840 more leaders
00:11:52.720 willing to ignore
00:11:53.860 the mockery
00:11:54.720 and ridicule
00:11:55.800 of the media
00:11:56.540 and cultural left
00:11:57.940 and fight for the issues
00:11:59.460 that truly matter
00:12:00.740 to those
00:12:01.540 tired of watching
00:12:02.540 the country around them
00:12:04.000 decay.
