The Auron MacIntyre Show - It's Time to Talk About Paperwork Americans ｜ 8⧸7⧸25

00:00:00.000 At a recent Pan-American Congress in Mexico City, Representative Delia Ramirez of Illinois

00:00:06.740 stood before attendees and declared in Spanish, I'm a proud Guatemalan before I'm an American.

00:00:13.580 Ramirez, who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee, helps to shape policies vital to the

00:00:18.580 nation's safety, yet she openly and proudly identifies with another country, and in a foreign

00:00:24.480 language, no less. Ramirez is far from alone. She's part of a growing class of politicians who treat

00:00:31.440 their American citizenship as a formality. Many are first-generation immigrants, but Ramirez isn't

00:00:37.460 even that. She was born to an illegal immigrant mother who crossed the border while pregnant 0.98

00:00:42.420 and secured birthright citizenship for her daughter. On paper, Ramirez is American. In every other way,

00:00:48.480 she's not. The immigration debate has forced Americans to confront the deeper question of

00:00:54.700 national identity. Nearly everyone agrees the southern border should be closed to illegal aliens.

00:01:00.780 But views on legal immigration vary widely, and those differences often rest on whether people

00:01:06.440 believe the United States is a quote-unquote propositional nation. The idea holds that America

00:01:12.980 is defined not by shared heritage or culture, but by a set of abstract principles. According to this

00:01:19.640 view, anyone who completes the paperwork and swears an oath is just as American as someone whose ancestors

00:01:25.700 fought in the Revolutionary War. The problem is, no one is ever denaturalized and deported for rejecting

00:01:33.300 the proposition. New citizens can, and often do, criticize or outright deny basic American values.

00:01:40.800 They can declare loyalty to foreign governments while holding office in the United States. And

00:01:46.900 because citizenship confers to First Amendment protections, they face no consequences for doing

00:01:52.300 so. This turns the entire idea of a propositional nation into a joke. Ramirez herself is not an

00:01:59.120 immigrant. She was born under the current understanding of the 14th Amendment. Her mother, in violation of 0.96

00:02:05.120 U.S. law, crossed the border while pregnant. No agreement to any American proposition was required.

00:02:12.420 Ramirez acquired the legal status of an American and the constitutional right to reject the nation 0.97

00:02:18.240 that gave it to her. There is no ideological connection, cultural tie, or apparent love of the country.

00:02:25.140 Only the paperwork remains. Now, immigration skeptics have long warned that newcomers often bring with

00:02:31.800 them foreign loyalties. Critics dismiss such concerns as racist, even when examples pile up.

00:02:38.420 Today, those examples speak for themselves. Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has described

00:02:44.360 Somalia as her real homeland and addressed Somalian crowds in their native language, pledging to fight 1.00

00:02:50.500 for their interests. Omar Fatah, or however you're supposed to say it, likely the next mayor of

00:02:56.280 Minneapolis speaks the same way. These are not the words of people who are assimilating. These are

00:03:01.760 declarations of divided loyalty. So you said this would be the summer of you. But then you remembered you

00:03:08.500 have kids and now you spend every sunny day at water parks and petting zoos. So be it. We do the prep so you

00:03:15.140 can get your you time back with freshly prepared ready for you dishes from Sobeys.

00:03:19.620 During the Los Angeles anti-ice riots in June, protesters waved Mexican flags, burned cars,

00:03:28.420 and attacked police. Many were illegal immigrants, but many others were citizens, some born in the

00:03:33.820 United States who were openly calling for the reconquest of California in the name of Mexico.

00:03:40.600 President Claudia Schimbom of Mexico even claimed the rioters as her own, describing them as fellow

00:03:46.740 Mexicans and calling on them to pressure the U.S. government to change laws that affected Mexico's

00:03:52.260 economy. The president of Mexico sees through the paperwork. She knows who her people really are.

00:03:58.940 But Americans, for some reason, continue to pretend that the paperwork alone tells the whole story.

00:04:05.060 And after all of this controversy, after all of this blowback for her remarks, Representative Ramirez,

00:04:11.080 she didn't apologize. She didn't back down. She doubled down. She said anybody who pointed out the

00:04:17.560 obvious fact that she was declaring her loyalty to a foreign country, anybody who noticed that fact, 0.97

00:04:23.440 they must be racist, white supremacists, of course, and nativists. Well, yeah, actually, I am a 0.94

00:04:30.220 nativist. I think that America should belong to Americans. I don't think people who are declaring

00:04:35.180 their allegiance to foreign countries who only have citizenship because their parents broke the law

00:04:40.980 and are now obviously totally disrespectful and disgraceful and disgusting in the way they 0.91

00:04:47.160 approach my country. I don't think that they should be in charge of my country. So yes, I am a nativist.

00:04:53.560 I think it makes sense when the people of the United States are taken care of by people of the United 0.98

00:04:58.600 States who care about the people of the United States, not Guatemala, people who don't go to foreign 0.92

00:05:04.760 countries and declare their allegiance to them and then come back and call the people of this country 0.94

00:05:09.960 racist and nativist white supremacists. Whatever. Get deported. Get out of here. 0.98

00:05:16.260 Look, the debate over American identity will continue for a long time to come, but the modern

00:05:22.020 definition clearly isn't working and something new will be required and that means having a tough

00:05:28.320 conversation. If we can't candidly discuss who belongs in this nation and why, we'll never resolve

00:05:36.040 the issue. And this goes doubly for the right who's terrified of being called a racist or a xenophobe or

00:05:42.600 a nativist, any of this garbage. In the meantime, we should at least agree on one thing. No one who 0.99

00:05:50.520 openly declares loyalty to another country should hold public office in the United States. The idea that

00:05:57.820 a sitting congresswoman can say that she belongs to Guatemala before she belongs to America and face 0.55

00:06:04.580 no consequences is absolutely insane. A nation that tolerates this cannot endure. A nation that

00:06:12.760 refuses to expel such people, not just from office, but from its borders is already dying. We treat this 0.98

00:06:20.620 behavior as acceptable. In reality, it's a form of treason. Paperwork alone does not make someone an

00:06:27.540 American. The people exploiting our system understand this. They aren't confused. They're mocking us.

00:06:34.580 Unless we find a courage to act, they're going to keep doing it. So send them back every last one.
