Summary

For decades, liberals loved to gloat about the economic productivity of blue states, characterizing Red America as a backward and culturally insignificant relic which had to be subsidized by the far more advanced and profitable sectors of the country. This was always an odd talking point for a movement which pretended to champion the poor and reject the excesses of capitalism. But never make the mistake of believing that the left cares more about the values they espouse than the opportunity to spit on an enemy.

00:00:30.000 For decades, liberals loved to gloat about the economic productivity of blue states,
00:00:42.620 characterizing Red America as a backward and culturally insignificant relic
00:00:46.620 which had to be subsidized by the far more advanced and profitable sectors of the country.
00:00:51.760 This was always a bit of an odd talking point for a movement which pretended to champion the poor
00:00:56.720 and reject the excesses of capitalism,
00:00:59.360 but never make the mistake of believing that the left cares more about the values they espouse
00:01:03.900 than the opportunity to spit on an enemy.
00:01:07.040 It was never a very factual argument,
00:01:09.140 as much of the subsidies provided to red states were agricultural
00:01:12.180 and served to drive down the cost of food across the country.
00:01:15.180 But progressive journalists and pundits love to sneer at their lessers
00:01:19.360 and rarely think about where their food comes from.
00:01:22.160 What is now beyond debate is that the economic power in the United States is shifting south,
00:01:27.800 as a report from Bloomberg recently revealed.
00:01:31.060 More than 2 million people moved to the south over the last two years,
00:01:35.360 taking $100 billion in wealth with them,
00:01:38.440 and that migration is reshaping the economic landscape of the nation.
00:01:43.320 According to the report,
00:01:44.740 the collective economic power of six states in the southeast,
00:01:48.860 Florida, Texas, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee,
00:01:53.580 now contribute more to GDP than the northeastern states.
00:01:58.040 This shift in economic dominance occurred during the COVID pandemic,
00:02:02.580 and the trend has shown no sign of slowing down.
00:02:05.180 The metropolitan areas of the south are booming
00:02:08.800 as the region dominates the rest of the nation in job growth.
00:02:13.100 Real estate prices have skyrocketed,
00:02:15.380 and new construction has risen rapidly
00:02:17.260 as housing markets seek to keep up with the increasing demand in red America.
00:02:22.260 A region that has long been ridiculed
00:02:24.700 as the poverty-stricken backwater of the nation
00:02:27.220 is transforming into America's most impressive economic engine.
00:02:31.700 The south has long sought to make itself a tempting target
00:02:34.320 for wealth migration,
00:02:35.660 with many states featuring a relatively cheap cost of living
00:02:38.620 and a low, or non-existent, income tax.
00:02:41.960 Many a retiree has discovered that their New York City pension
00:02:45.660 went much farther below the Mason-Dixon line.
00:02:49.500 Southern states have also attempted to lure corporations
00:02:52.120 to relocate to their metro areas with generous subsidies
00:02:55.360 or the suspension of development impact fees.
00:02:58.800 Those efforts have already borne fruit,
00:03:01.000 but the lockdowns and economic disruption of the pandemic
00:03:03.560 rapidly accelerated the movement of individuals
00:03:06.140 and corporations into regions that had been more resistant
00:03:09.260 to the biomedical tyranny which accompanied the COVID outbreak.
00:03:13.300 The inability to operate a business or leave one's home
00:03:17.040 turned out to be the push that many needed
00:03:19.220 to finally make the move southward.
00:03:22.480 The advantages of life in blue America have always been clear.
00:03:27.520 Urban areas dominated by liberal politics
00:03:29.980 offered economic, social, and cultural opportunities
00:03:32.780 that simply could not be found anywhere else.
00:03:36.260 Crime, drugs, and other social ills
00:03:38.220 may have been exacerbated by permissive progressive policies,
00:03:42.640 but many were willing to pay the cost for access
00:03:45.100 to the numerous benefits that these economic powerhouses could provide.
00:03:50.280 That calculus had already begun to shift
00:03:52.640 as the radical drive to essentially legalize crime
00:03:55.780 seized the progressive movement.
00:03:58.160 Theft, vandalism, and drug crime naturally escalated
00:04:01.480 as an increasing number of progressive jurisdictions
00:04:03.820 refused to prosecute violators
00:04:05.900 and leftist district attorneys,
00:04:07.760 often elected with the help of George Soros,
00:04:10.380 reduced the sentences of violent criminals
00:04:12.200 and those facing weapons charges.
00:04:14.800 Are you a college student who feels isolated
00:04:16.800 as Cthulhu swims ever leftward?
00:04:19.260 The Intercollegiate Studies Institute is here to help.
00:04:22.200 ISI offers programs and opportunities
00:04:24.140 for conservative students across the country.
00:04:26.940 ISI understands that conservatives
00:04:28.500 and right-of-center students feel isolated on campus
00:04:31.300 and that you're often fighting
00:04:32.680 for your own reputation, dignity, and future.
00:04:35.880 Through ISI, you can learn about
00:04:37.380 what Russell Kirk called permanent things,
00:04:39.360 the philosophical and political teachings
00:04:41.280 that shaped and made Western civilization great.
00:04:44.640 ISI also offers many opportunities
00:04:46.500 to jumpstart your career.
00:04:48.300 For example, Nate Hockman,
00:04:49.620 who's been a guest on this show multiple times,
00:04:51.840 got his start at National Review through ISI,
00:04:54.520 and he's just one of many journalists
00:04:56.080 that ISI has helped start their career.
00:04:58.880 If you're a graduate student,
00:05:00.200 ISI offers funding opportunities
00:05:01.940 to sponsor the next generation of college professors.
00:05:05.260 But most importantly,
00:05:06.600 ISI offers college students
00:05:08.160 a community of people
00:05:09.280 that will help them grow.
00:05:11.300 If you're a college student,
00:05:12.500 ISI can help you start a student organization
00:05:14.700 or a student newspaper,
00:05:16.420 or meet other like-minded students
00:05:18.200 at various conferences and events.
00:05:20.960 ISI is here to educate
00:05:22.120 the next generation of great Americans.

00:05:32.600 Shoplifting rings regularly emptied
00:05:35.520 the shelves of large retailers
00:05:36.880 without fear of punishment,
00:05:38.660 prompting corporations
00:05:39.480 to abandon those areas altogether.
00:05:42.800 Calls to defund
00:05:43.780 or completely abolish the police
00:05:45.620 accompanied the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020.
00:05:49.500 Law-abiding citizens
00:05:50.520 who had dutifully shuttered their businesses
00:05:52.580 and churches in response to the pandemic
00:05:54.700 watched rioters burn down
00:05:56.780 those same storefronts
00:05:58.220 while being cheered on
00:05:59.320 by progressive politicians.
00:06:00.560 The trade-offs for living in blue states
00:06:03.840 may have once been worth the sacrifice,
00:06:06.300 but it became increasingly clear
00:06:07.780 that relocation was quickly becoming
00:06:09.640 an existential question.

00:06:26.960 The economic shift of southern migration
00:06:29.560 may grab the headlines,
00:06:31.420 but it would be a mistake
00:06:32.380 to ignore the social and political factors.
00:06:35.700 Many who already understood
00:06:37.260 the financial benefits of relocation
00:06:39.380 had their hands forced
00:06:40.540 by the progressive revolution
00:06:41.880 which was consuming their home states.
00:06:44.840 These culture war refugees
00:06:46.640 sought to escape a social climate
00:06:48.600 where sexualization,
00:06:50.120 radical gender theory,
00:06:51.340 and outright mutilation
00:06:52.540 were being pushed on their children.
00:06:53.940 The constant witch hunt
00:06:55.940 to cancel conservatives
00:06:57.180 and the social alienation
00:06:58.660 felt by the few
00:06:59.820 right-of-center residents
00:07:01.240 remaining in blue states
00:07:02.620 eventually became
00:07:03.580 too overwhelming to ignore.
00:07:06.320 Cultural degradation
00:07:07.120 may have been something
00:07:08.200 that people were willing
00:07:09.040 to put up with
00:07:09.820 as long as the financial benefits
00:07:11.280 continued to flow.
00:07:12.580 But those who had not
00:07:13.560 completely embraced
00:07:14.680 the progressive revolution
00:07:15.920 quickly found
00:07:16.840 that their neighborhoods
00:07:17.560 were unsafe,
00:07:18.800 their children were brainwashed,
00:07:20.180 and their human resource department
00:07:21.640 was seeking to fire them.
00:07:23.760 In previous decades,
00:07:25.000 the need for shared cultural values
00:07:26.840 had been outweighed
00:07:27.800 by the promise
00:07:28.440 of economic prosperity,
00:07:30.340 but it became increasingly clear
00:07:31.620 that those two factors
00:07:32.720 could no longer
00:07:33.540 be evaluated separately.
00:07:35.660 While this shift
00:07:36.360 in population and capital
00:07:37.740 has provided many benefits
00:07:39.200 to red states,
00:07:40.300 it can also be a danger.
00:07:42.540 Large corporations
00:07:43.440 and blue state refugees
00:07:44.680 tend to bring their values
00:07:46.000 with them.
00:07:47.160 For many years,
00:07:48.060 Florida was trending
00:07:48.700 from a solid red
00:07:49.880 to purple
00:07:50.460 as residents from New York
00:07:51.980 and New Jersey
00:07:52.700 relocated for lower housing prices
00:07:54.900 and taxes,
00:07:56.100 but then immediately resumed
00:07:57.320 voting for the same policies
00:07:58.720 that had made
00:07:59.360 their previous home states
00:08:00.600 unlivable.
00:08:02.140 Texas and Arizona
00:08:03.200 have seen a similar shift
00:08:04.500 as Californians flee
00:08:05.780 their sinking state
00:08:06.840 only to start the process
00:08:08.180 of civilizational decay anew.
00:08:11.240 In Florida,
00:08:11.860 that trend was reversed
00:08:12.820 after the post-pandemic migration
00:08:14.580 brought a massive influx
00:08:16.120 of residents
00:08:16.820 who were moving
00:08:17.680 not just for the economic reasons,
00:08:19.560 but for political
00:08:20.540 and cultural reasons as well.
00:08:22.900 In a 2022 midterm election
00:08:25.060 where most GOP candidates
00:08:26.780 fell well short of expectations,
00:08:29.060 Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
00:08:30.300 crushed his opponent
00:08:31.460 by 20 points.
00:08:33.420 DeSantis used that momentum
00:08:34.960 to pass sweeping changes
00:08:36.740 on issues like gun rights,
00:08:38.280 transgenderist ideology,
00:08:39.920 and abortion.
00:08:41.300 The governor's willingness
00:08:42.320 to push back
00:08:43.140 on large corporations
00:08:44.340 like Disney
00:08:45.200 while advancing
00:08:45.960 culturally conservative
00:08:47.200 legislation created
00:08:48.340 a filtering mechanism
00:08:49.440 for new residents.
00:08:51.620 Those who were seeking
00:08:52.480 to move purely
00:08:53.520 for economic benefit
00:08:55.080 would have to look elsewhere.
00:08:57.680 As the competent
00:08:58.400 and sane
00:08:59.220 flee the progressive
00:09:00.260 cultural revolution,
00:09:01.900 the contrast between states
00:09:03.420 which embrace leftist rule
00:09:05.020 and those that reject it
00:09:06.240 will grow stark.
00:09:08.240 It was already clear
00:09:09.620 that crime, drugs,
00:09:11.020 and social disorder
00:09:11.940 were the cost
00:09:12.660 of progressive politics,
00:09:14.420 but the basic maintenance
00:09:15.440 of civilization
00:09:16.300 has now become impossible
00:09:17.920 in many blue states.
00:09:20.240 If Red America
00:09:21.160 can use cultural filtering
00:09:23.020 to avoid being transformed
00:09:24.620 by blue state refugees,
00:09:26.580 it will siphon away
00:09:27.500 the best and brightest
00:09:28.800 while growing wealthier
00:09:29.980 in the process.
00:09:31.780 This could even become
00:09:32.780 a threat to regime stability
00:09:34.500 as states begin to recognize
00:09:36.140 that ignoring
00:09:36.880 the progressive dictates
00:09:38.260 of the corrupt
00:09:38.900 Washington machine
00:09:39.980 yields a far better
00:09:41.120 standard of living.
00:09:42.660 It doesn't really matter
00:09:44.600 how good Democrats,
00:09:46.300 the media,
00:09:47.020 and the federal bureaucracy
00:09:47.980 get at fortifying elections
00:09:50.360 if everything
00:09:51.260 the progressive machine touches
00:09:52.720 turns to ash.
00:09:54.880 If red states
00:09:56.080 can avoid turning blue
00:09:57.660 due to voter migration,
00:09:59.480 their economic
00:10:00.100 and social advantages
00:10:01.380 will become too obvious
00:10:03.120 for anyone to ignore.
00:10:09.380 Thanks for watching, guys.
