Summary

On Tuesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that the legislative body is opening a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The response from the left and its media lickspittles was immediate and predictable. They demanded that the White House widen the scope of the investigation, and the media obliged.

00:00:30.000 On Tuesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that the legislative body is opening a formal
00:00:42.600 impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
00:00:45.840 The inquiry is comically late, as evidence of Biden's rampant corruption has been readily
00:00:50.640 available for years, but it's nice when Republicans at least pretend to fight the left.
00:00:56.160 The inquiry is very unlikely to go anywhere despite Biden's obvious guilt, and if the
00:01:01.360 GOP were any form of serious political opposition, they would be using their formal power of the
00:01:06.520 purse to defund the administration's partisan and malicious abuse of agencies like the FBI.
00:01:12.080 While impotent half-measures from Republican leadership are unsurprising, the far more interesting
00:01:19.040 aspect of this news cycle was the response from the left and its media lickspittles.
00:01:23.480 Not long after McCarthy announced the impeachment inquiry, the White House rushed out a memo to
00:01:29.720 the press instructing them to increase the scrutiny that they were applying to the charges.
00:01:34.600 The amazing thing was watching how quickly and blatantly the press complied with the order in real time.
00:01:40.920 After the memo's release, media outlets reported on these instructions from the Biden administration
00:01:47.400 as if they were breaking news. Outlets like CNN, NBC, and Axios dutifully echoed the sentiments of the
00:01:54.520 letter from the White House while reporting on it. Politico's Heidi Prisbala followed her announcement
00:02:01.000 of the memo's existence with a Twitter thread that fact-checked the claims of the inquiry,
00:02:06.360 just as the president of the United States had ordered her to do. Neoconservative and
00:02:11.400 Trump derangement syndrome patient David Frump eagerly retweeted the thread.
00:02:16.760 Not to be outdone, CNN, despite having just revealed that the White House had ordered them
00:02:22.040 to attack the impeachment inquiry, produced their own fact-check to comply with the demands of the
00:02:27.480 regime. There's a good argument to be had over whether a free press ever really held government
00:02:34.280 power in check, but today that assertion is beyond laughable. In 2019 I learned about the
00:02:41.000 political theorist Curtis Yarvin and his concept of the cathedral, which is a way to model the
00:02:46.600 decentralized network of prestige, influence, and information that drives the political will
00:02:52.120 of our current regime. Since then I've dedicated a large amount of time to explaining how that system
00:02:58.440 works and how the right can use that model to understand the manner in which power is wielded.
00:03:04.680 In Yarvin's model, power does not reside primarily in the formal organs of government,
00:03:10.600 but instead in the story that informs the values of our ruling class.
00:03:16.200 University is the core formative experience that all of our ruling elites share, and those
00:03:22.120 prestigious schools shape the morality and worldview of every person who enters the halls of power.
00:03:29.480 Journalists don't see themselves as neutral arbiters of truth, but instead as zealous crusaders against
00:03:36.280 injustice that reinforce the narrative they learned in university with every stroke of the pen.
00:03:42.440 The functionaries that fill government bureaucracies don't see themselves as servants
00:03:47.000 of the average voter, but instead as transformative agents whose purpose is to engineer the deplorables of
00:03:53.480 red America into compliant progressive cultists. The university grads that populate the management
00:04:00.200 of every fortune 500 company don't see themselves as businessmen, but as representatives for racial
00:04:06.200 justice and equity. This shared value system means that while there is no formal government propaganda
00:04:13.240 apparatus in the United States, all of the country's major institutions, both public and private,
00:04:19.880 end up pursuing the same goals and spouting the same platitudes. While this distributed network of
00:04:26.120 influence was less efficient than an explicit organ of state propaganda, it had some distinct advantages.
00:04:34.040 Change was slower, but it also felt more organic. People were more likely to feel that social
00:04:40.280 attitudes, which were being pushed from on high, were actually emergent from the shifting tastes of the
00:04:45.720 popular will. Hey guys, like most of you, I have fond memories of waking up at the crack of dawn,
00:04:51.320 excited to watch all the Saturday morning cartoons. Mom didn't want to wake up that early on Saturday,
00:04:56.520 so that meant that we got to pour a bowl of our favorite cereal for breakfast. They tasted great,
00:05:01.000 but of course they're full of sugar and they're not that healthy, which is why it was a treat.
00:05:05.400 But now Magic Spoon has an alternative to that cereal you love that has zero sugar but still tastes great.
00:05:11.000 There's a bunch of different flavors, but they have a nice variety pack to get you started with cocoa,
00:05:15.480 fruity, frosted, and peanut butter. The variety pack has zero grams of sugar,
00:05:20.360 13 to 14 grams of protein, and four to five grams of net carbs per serving, and each serving is only
00:05:26.200 140 calories. The cereal checks a lot of boxes for people because it's high protein, has zero sugar,
00:05:32.600 it's keto friendly, gluten free, grain free, and soy free. You might be skeptical about sugarless
00:05:38.920 high protein cereal, but I can tell you it actually tastes great. Peanut butter was my personal favorite,
00:05:44.120 but my wife and the little guy were big fans of the fruity flavor. And they both really like cereal,
00:05:48.760 so it's nice to have a no sugar, high protein option. So go to magicspoon.com slash Oren to grab

00:06:19.720 save $5. Maintaining this kind of soft power is very difficult, requiring a high degree of skill
00:06:27.080 and subtlety. But it's also proven far more resilient than more direct methods of propaganda.
00:06:33.960 In a system where popular sovereignty is the only acceptable legitimating mechanism of government power,
00:06:39.800 control of public opinion is key. The left's hegemony over mass media and education provided
00:06:46.600 all of the tools necessary to insert ideas into the popular consciousness and wait patiently,
00:06:53.080 nudging and prodding when necessary, until people believe that this was what they really wanted all
00:06:59.000 along. Manufacturing consent without setting off the alarm bells of the populace can be a delicate
00:07:06.200 balancing act. But if the ruling class can pull it off, they have one of the most stable power
00:07:11.400 structures ever conceived. What's better than a well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue?
00:07:17.400 A well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue that was carefully selected by an Instacart shopper
00:07:22.520 and delivered to your door. A well-marbled ribeye you ordered without even leaving the kiddie pool.

00:07:40.280 Instacart. Groceries that over-deliver.
00:07:44.520 While detailing this system has been a major focus of my work, it also seems to have been a bit of a
00:07:49.560 waste because the regime has decided to throw it in the trash bin. There is nothing subtle or delicate
00:07:56.040 about the White House handing out explicit marching orders in public and the press falling over each other
00:08:02.200 to see who could comply first. No one needs a complicated theory of decentralized coordination
00:08:09.240 when the elites are just announcing their collusion in public. Now, to be clear, there's still some value
00:08:16.280 in understanding how the old system worked. There are still many ideas and attitudes that the elite
00:08:23.400 attempt to pass through their soft power network which the right should be on guard against.
00:08:29.400 Also, the flow of power is not as obvious as it may seem. The press gives the Biden administration
00:08:36.200 orders just as if not more often than the White House gives orders to journalists. What has become
00:08:43.160 blindingly obvious, however, is that the ability of our elites to wield soft power is failing and that
00:08:50.040 they have in many cases stopped going through the motions entirely. There are a number of different
00:08:57.320 factors contributing to the collapse of total narrative control by our ruling elite. The internet,
00:09:03.720 while granting our evil overlords all kinds of terrible tools, is fundamentally an agent of
00:09:09.160 decentralization. It breaks the monopoly of mass media that was once held by a tightly controlled
00:09:15.320 network of television stations, news broadcasts, movie studios, and newspapers. While opposing voices are
00:09:23.000 regularly banned from major platforms, new dissident voices and outlets seem to emerge twice as quickly
00:09:29.240 as they can be silenced. Despite the ludicrous amount of censorship that is regularly applied in
00:09:34.840 venues like Twitter, the truth has a nasty habit of getting out. Another issue is simply the rapidly
00:09:41.880 declining quality of our ruling elite. Subtlety, nuance, and patience are key factors necessary to the
00:09:49.400 maintenance of soft power. The legitimacy of institutions, experts, and narratives must be
00:09:56.520 accumulated slowly and guarded carefully. Soft power is wielded by the sophisticated elite with a high
00:10:04.120 degree of self-control, not the irate toddler who wishes to crush their enemies tomorrow. But our system
00:10:11.480 has selected for conformity and compliance, not for intellect or discipline. Progressives have always been
00:10:18.360 deconstructionists, but at least they used to produce thought-provoking works of art. Now all they are
00:10:24.040 capable of is endless social justice sermons masquerading as comic book movie sequels. Our elites
00:10:30.600 have managed to degenerate to unthinkable depths while simultaneously becoming more confident about their
00:10:36.680 right to rule than any group in history. It's no wonder that they've gotten sloppy and obvious.
00:10:42.680 We are in a very interesting moment when a ruling elite that used to rely on the subtlety and finesse of
00:10:50.440 soft power becomes entirely incapable of operating the system their more talented predecessors created.
00:10:58.280 We have lived our lives watching a show, a pantomime of a political process put on by those who sought to
00:11:05.960 hide the real exercise of power. This is a scary thing to realize, but it also creates opportunities
00:11:13.160 that didn't previously exist. The comforting fictions of a free press that holds politicians accountable
00:11:20.360 or a public private distinction that limits government power simply cannot survive what has become blindingly
00:11:27.640 obvious due to the incompetence of our leaders. While our elites will continue to put on the show for a
00:11:34.200 while longer, their narrative control is slipping, and that creates new opportunities both great and terrible
00:11:42.680 for the future.
