Transcript

00:00:00.000 One of the more irritating leftist tropes to emerge in the last year has been the rise of Fearless Girl, a hedge fund-sponsored bronze statue of a small girl standing defiantly in front of the Wall Street Bull, which would presumably trample her to death if both figures were real.
00:00:12.000 Now, Democratic politician after Democratic politician has come forward to pay homage to this bronze calf.
00:00:18.000 First, it was New York Mayor Bill de Blasio who criticized Wall Street, the same Wall Street that erected the annoyingly stupid icon.
00:00:24.000 Now it's Senator Elizabeth Warren, who took a break from writing shrimp recipes for Native American cookbooks to demonstrate that she, too, cares about metal effigies erected by disproportionately male investment firms.
00:00:34.000 And, you know, the picture's pretty amazing.
00:00:38.000 She did persist in irritating the rest of us.
00:00:40.000 Warren, of course, has been one of the lead Democratic voices in favor of so-called pay equality between men and women, ignoring all statistical evidence that the pay gap does not actually exist when all relevant factors are taken into account.
00:00:51.000 Worth noting, Warren's female staffers earned 71% less than her male staffers did last year.
00:00:57.000 Only one of Warren's top staffers earns more than $100,000 and was female.
00:01:02.000 But this is all virtue signaling, of course.
00:01:04.000 The notion is that if you don't stand in solidarity with a little girl against a giant bull, you must hate women and children.
00:01:10.000 Somebody ought to inform Warren and other leftists that the little girl was once an unborn little girl, and Warren would then, presumably, stand with the bull.
00:01:16.000 I'm Ben Shapiro.
00:01:17.000 This is The Ben Shapiro Show.
00:01:22.000 Alrighty, tons to get to today.
00:01:23.000 Lots of foreign policy news.
00:01:25.000 I feel like every time I take off a couple of days, the world just reaches a new level of chaos, and so it is and so it shall be.
00:01:31.000 Plus, in just a few minutes, we're going to be having on Lauren Southern, who, of course, a well-known right-wing commentator from Canada, and she was at the Berkeley riots again.
00:01:41.000 Berkeley does not seem like a nice place.
00:01:43.000 All these friendly hippies are not that friendly, and so we'll talk about that.
00:01:47.000 Starting to look like the Weimar Republic out there.
00:01:49.000 But first, I want to say thank you to our sponsors over at Helix Sleep.
00:01:52.000 So, I am not somebody who sleeps well.
00:01:55.000 I require a very comfortable mattress and wonderful sheets.
00:01:58.000 Helix Sleep provides the very, very comfortable mattress.
00:02:00.000 It's helixsleep.com
00:02:02.000 We're good to go.
00:02:17.000 And then they send it to your house.
00:02:19.000 The shipping is free.
00:02:20.000 They send it to your house, and if you don't like it, you have 100 nights to try it out, and then you can send it right back.
00:02:26.000 Helix customers reported 30% improvement in overall sleep quality.
00:02:30.000 My wife and I had a much more expensive mattress, actually, and we moved it out of the room in favor of the Helix mattress because the Helix mattress is so comfortable.
00:02:37.000 It's helixsleep.com slash ben.
00:02:39.000 You get $50 off your order.
00:02:41.000 Again, it comes in a big box.
00:02:42.000 Unroll the box and it inflates automatically because it's a foam mattress.
00:02:46.000 It's really comfortable.
00:02:47.000 Unlike a lot of other foam mattresses, you can get ones that really breathe well, so it doesn't feel like you're in a kiln.
00:02:53.000 And, yeah, I really like the mattress a lot.
00:02:56.000 So does my wife.
00:02:57.000 I can't recommend it highly enough.
00:02:58.000 Plus, it's no risk to you, because if you hate it, then you can always send it back for free.
00:03:02.000 So that's great.
00:03:03.000 It's HelixSleep.com slash Ben.
00:03:04.000 HelixSleep.com slash Ben.
00:03:06.000 $50 off your order.
00:03:07.000 I promise you won't hate it.
00:03:08.000 You'll actually like it a lot.
00:03:08.000 It's a fantastic product.
00:03:10.000 Okay, so.
00:03:11.000 Lots going on in the world.
00:03:13.000 Among the things that are going on in the world, the Trump administration continues to kind of futz around on foreign policy and we'll talk about that.
00:03:22.000 But first I want to talk about the fallout that happened from this election in the Georgia 6th District last night.
00:03:28.000 So Georgia 6th District is a district that I think Trump won by a relatively small margin.
00:03:34.000 He won it by 1.5 or 2 percent because there's been some redistricting there.
00:03:39.000 There has been some significant movement in that district over time.
00:03:41.000 Four years ago, Barack Obama lost that district by 23% to Mitt Romney.
00:03:46.000 So, this particular district, last night, there was a runoff because Tom Price was the representative from that district, and now Tom Price is the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
00:03:56.000 So, his name is John Ossoff, he's a Democrat, he doesn't even live in the district, and he ran against a slew of Republicans, I think there were 11 Republicans,
00:04:04.000 And the idea was that if he crosses 50% in this original election, then he wins the seat outright.
00:04:09.000 If he doesn't cross 50%, there's a runoff.
00:04:11.000 If there's a runoff, he likely loses because it's a heavier Republican district.
00:04:14.000 So, Democrats poured a crap load of money into this district.
00:04:17.000 They poured $8.3 million into this local special election, trying to demonstrate that they were going to fight back against the Trump administration, and that was a giant fail.
00:04:26.000 So, the candidate, John Ossoff, won about the same percentage in the district as Hillary Clinton won in the district.
00:04:31.000 He came up just short.
00:04:33.000 One of the reasons he came up just short is because he doesn't actually live in the district and that came out a couple of days before the actual election.
00:04:39.000 Now that's not illegal, but obviously most people who vote for their congressperson like to know the person actually lives where they represent.
00:04:45.000 There was an Ossoff yesterday trying to explain why he doesn't live in the home district.
00:04:49.000 Well, I grew up in this district.
00:04:51.000 I grew up in this community.
00:04:52.000 It's my home.
00:04:53.000 My family is still there.
00:04:54.000 I'm a mile and a half down the street to support Alicia while she finishes medical school.
00:04:59.000 It's something I've been very transparent about.
00:05:01.000 In fact, I'm proud to be supporting her career.
00:05:03.000 And as soon as she finishes her medical training, I'll be ten minutes back up the road into the district where I grew up.
00:05:09.000 Okay, so that explanation did not really do a lot for him.
00:05:13.000 He's not going to win the general election in all likelihood because, again, now all the Republican votes are going to consolidate.
00:05:18.000 He won, I think, 46%, 47% of the vote last night.
00:05:22.000 All of that Republican support is going to now rally around a woman I actually know pretty well, Karen Handel, who used to be an executive at
00:05:31.000 Komen for the cure, the anti-cancer institute.
00:05:35.000 She has been the Georgia Secretary of State before.
00:05:37.000 She ran unsuccessfully for governor in the past.
00:05:40.000 Really nice lady.
00:05:41.000 Very, very quality politician.
00:05:44.000 She's not somebody who gets enthusiasm up high, but she will do the work that she needs to do and she'll probably win.
00:05:49.000 That's why Ossoff yesterday, after he did not win outright, he was out there touting it as a victory for the ages.
00:05:55.000 The entire Democratic Party is now trying to overstate how big a victory this was for them because he didn't win.
00:05:59.000 So now they're trying to say that he just blew it out of the water and this is just what's to come under Trump, that the Democrats are going to win back the House.
00:06:07.000 Here is Ossoff overstating his case.
00:06:09.000 There is no doubt that this is already a victory for the ages.
00:06:15.000 Thermopylae or what?
00:06:20.000 I mean, victory for the ages.
00:06:22.000 Let's not overstate the case, dude.
00:06:23.000 You couldn't win an election in which there were a combined, looks like, less than 200,000 votes.
00:06:28.000 I'm gonna go with that's not a victory for the ages, especially if you don't end up with the congressional seats.
00:06:33.000 Most of the people who talk about moral victories are losers.
00:06:35.000 If you're talking about moral victory, it's because you didn't win.
00:06:37.000 So, there are some troubling signs for Republicans here.
00:06:40.000 The most troubling sign for Republicans in the Georgia 6th, to be accurate, is that the Democratic turnout was down from the general election cycle, but it wasn't down nearly as much as it was down among Republicans.
00:06:51.000 So, if you look at the Georgia 6th or the Kansas 4th, the Kansas 4th district was another case where there was a special election, Republicans won that one too, but the Democratic turnout was down 25%,
00:07:01.000 From the Hillary election in this district in the special election, the Republican turnout was down 51% from the last election cycle in this election.
00:07:09.000 So in other words, twice as many Republicans as Democrats by percentage dropped out of this election cycle.
00:07:14.000 And that's not going to bode well for midterms because obviously Democrats are going to be more geared up for all of this.
00:07:20.000 It's a little early to say that this just demonstrates that Trump is not hurting people down ballot.
00:07:24.000 In fact,
00:07:25.000 The number of candidates who ran in this Georgia 6th district, the people who are more closely tied with Trump, there is a heavy correlation between being closely tied with Trump and not doing particularly well in this election cycle.
00:07:37.000 But it's not clear what's going to happen in 2018 based on this.
00:07:40.000 Democrats raised an enormous amount of money, as I said.
00:07:42.000 They put forward a huge, huge amount of cash in this election and they still weren't able to get this guy over the top.
00:07:50.000 You know, it's going to be a good Democratic year, but is it going to be a good enough Democratic year to put them over the top?
00:07:53.000 I don't know that that's the case.
00:07:55.000 And the media, in search of some sort of victory, are, of course, overstating this dramatically.
00:07:59.000 Don Lemon, CNN, he says that John Ossoff, you just saw him, John Ossoff, he looks like, he looks like the guy from Ferris Bueller, who's not Ferris Bueller, the guy who drives his dad's Porsche out the window.
00:08:10.000 Don Lemon says he sounds like Obama.
00:08:12.000 So that was John Ossoff in a very tight race down in Atlanta.
00:08:15.000 He's projecting that it's going to be a runoff.
00:08:17.000 Am I the only one who said he sounded like Barack Obama?
00:08:21.000 No?
00:08:22.000 Did that sound like Barack Obama?
00:08:23.000 Yes, he did.
00:08:24.000 He's 30 years old.
00:08:26.000 He figured it worked for him.
00:08:29.000 Yes, we can, John Ossoff.
00:08:30.000 Yes, we can.
00:08:32.000 Everybody on CNN celebratory after not getting what they want here.
00:08:37.000 It is amazing that he raised that much money.
00:08:40.000 And again, he raised that much money and it still didn't help him.
00:08:42.000 That looks a lot like what happened with Hillary Clinton who raised an enormous amount of money and it didn't help her against Trump.
00:08:46.000 But there are some warning signs for Republicans and Republicans would be wise to pay attention to those warning signs.
00:08:51.000 Now meanwhile,
00:08:52.000 Over the weekend, I didn't have a chance to discuss it, obviously, because it was Passover, but over the weekend there was this riot that occurred in Berkeley.
00:08:59.000 Basically, there was a pro-Trump rally in Berkeley.
00:09:02.000 The only reason to have a pro-Trump rally in Berkeley is to stick it to the left in Berkeley, obviously.
00:09:06.000 And a bunch of anti-Trump Antifa characters, these are the people who consider themselves anti-fascist,
00:09:11.000 There's nothing more fascist than showing up to an opposing rally and then wailing on people and beating the living crap out of them.
00:09:17.000 It's actually pretty reminiscent of the Weimar Republic where the Reds and the Browns were beating the living crap out of each other and that actually led to the rise of a more dictatorial authoritarian government.
00:09:26.000 That's usually what happens when there's chaos.
00:09:28.000 People want more authority in order to tamp down on chaos because nobody wants to see this in their streets.
00:09:32.000 Apparently the cops were sitting by and doing nothing as all of this continued.
00:09:37.000 Here's a little bit of the footage from what was happening during this
00:09:41.000 Bloody battle, basically.
00:09:57.000 There are pictures of people who are super bloody.
00:09:59.000 There are pictures of people who have been hit across the face.
00:10:03.000 And it wasn't the Trump people who started this.
00:10:06.000 It wasn't the Trump people who went there looking to fight it out with Antifa.
00:10:09.000 You can always tell who the bad guys are.
00:10:10.000 Now they're stomping on a guy.
00:10:11.000 Look at this.
00:10:12.000 It's disgusting.
00:10:14.000 Hitting people with skateboards.
00:10:16.000 Really horrifying.
00:10:17.000 You can always tell who the bad guys are in these situations.
00:10:19.000 The people who are wearing the masks are the bad guys.
00:10:22.000 If you feel the need to wear a mask,
00:10:23.000 Because you're afraid that people are going to pay attention to you, see who you are, and arrest you.
00:10:27.000 Then you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
00:10:30.000 This was a free speech rally, so people were doing this in order to demonstrate that they would stand up against the Antifa group.
00:10:39.000 I don't know.
00:10:54.000 To go ahead.
00:10:55.000 Nobody knows.
00:10:56.000 Where is the mayor?
00:10:57.000 I mean, this is now the second time that this has happened in Berkeley in a relative span of months.
00:11:01.000 Actually, it's the third time, if I remember correctly.
00:11:03.000 There's a rally that broke into violence here.
00:11:06.000 There's one that broke into violence in Sacramento at the Capitol in California.
00:11:10.000 And then there was, of course, the riot that broke out when Milo Yiannopoulos went to speak over there.
00:11:13.000 Well, joining us on the program right now is Lauren Southern.
00:11:16.000 Lauren Southern was there.
00:11:17.000 She, of course, is well known on Twitter and on YouTube.
00:11:20.000 Canadian conservative libertarian political commentator and provocateur.
00:11:23.000 She's the author of the book, Barbarians, How Baby Boomers, Immigrants, and Islam Screwed My Generation.
00:11:27.000 You can follow her on Twitter, at Lauren underscore Southern, or on YouTube, as Lauren Southern.
00:11:32.000 Lauren, thanks so much for joining the show.
00:11:34.000 I appreciate it.
00:11:35.000 Hi, Ben.
00:11:35.000 Thanks for having me.
00:11:36.000 So, Lauren, can you give me some details?
00:11:37.000 Because I'm just seeing sort of the secondhand coverage.
00:11:39.000 Obviously, you were there.
00:11:40.000 So, what exactly went down?
00:11:42.000 Yeah, for sure.
00:11:44.000 Every time there's been a pro-Trump, pro-free speech right-wing event in Berkeley, it has been shut down by militant leftists.
00:11:51.000 And the people there are just so sick and tired of it.
00:11:54.000 So they said, no more.
00:11:55.000 We're not going to live in a world in Berkeley where we cannot have a certain political idea without fear of being physically injured.
00:12:01.000 So they had an even bigger rally this time.
00:12:04.000 And the police assured myself and the organizers that there would be an impressive presence there, that the left wouldn't be able to shut it down this time.
00:12:12.000 But it was under one condition that the police would be there, that everyone that went into this protected zone by the police disarmed, that we didn't have any sticks, any bear mace, any pepper spray.
00:12:22.000 So all the Trump supporters went into this kind of
00:12:25.000 They put up a little mesh orange fence around an area where we were going to have the free speech event, and then Antifa showed up and started surrounding the place around a bunch of disarmed people, but we were like, you know what?
00:12:35.000 It's going to be fine.
00:12:36.000 The cops are here.
00:12:37.000 We're good.
00:12:38.000 Then Antifa starts throwing M80s, little explosives and fireworks, and suddenly
00:12:43.000 Boom.
00:12:44.000 The cops were gone.
00:12:45.000 They'd gotten stand-down orders, and we were left in the center of this area, surrounded by Antifa, totally disarmed, and things just turned into chaos.
00:12:53.000 It was fists flying everywhere.
00:12:55.000 That's absolutely insane.
00:12:57.000 And did you ever get an explanation from the police as to who actually ordered the stand-down?
00:13:02.000 Right.
00:13:02.000 Well, that's the interesting bit.
00:13:03.000 I was really frustrated during it and I was like, I can't believe the cops did that.
00:13:06.000 But another journalist went up to the cops and asked them, why are you standing down?
00:13:10.000 And one of the guys sitting in the front seat said, well, that would be a question for our boss, wouldn't it?
00:13:14.000 And he looked really mad.
00:13:16.000 So it wasn't the individual cops.
00:13:18.000 It was someone from higher up for sure.
00:13:19.000 And that's pretty typical.
00:13:20.000 I mean, even when I speak at college campuses and the cops get stand-down orders, it's never the cops.
00:13:23.000 It's always the people who are in charge of the cops telling them they need to stand down on this sort of thing.
00:13:28.000 So, for people who don't know what Antifa is, you've obviously now had dealings with them.
00:13:31.000 What are Antifa, what do they think they're doing, and why are they doing it?
00:13:35.000 They are the anti-fascists.
00:13:37.000 They actually come from a wing of the German Communist Party, and they're a militant group that believe, by any means possible, anything that can remotely be perceived as right-wing, anything to the right of Marx, basically, has to be shut down violently, and they use a tactic called Black Bloc.
00:13:54.000 We're good.
00:14:13.000 It's really scary going against them because they have zero morals.
00:14:16.000 Zero whatsoever.
00:14:17.000 They're hurtling bricks and giant rocks into the crowd.
00:14:22.000 Literal attempted murder.
00:14:23.000 Would have killed someone if it hit them in the face.
00:14:24.000 Were there any arrests at this thing or literally it just sort of ended and everybody went home?
00:14:29.000 At the beginning, there were a couple arrests of Antifa that were trying to go over the mesh and, I guess, Trump supporters that were trying to fight back.
00:14:37.000 So there were a few at the beginning.
00:14:38.000 And after the fact, when the police had just disappeared, they looked at a few of the videos and made a couple arrests.
00:14:44.000 I think there were
00:14:46.000 Eleven or twelve arrests in total?
00:14:48.000 I could be wrong.
00:15:03.000 That it was an equal distribution of blame.
00:15:06.000 That it was half Milo's fault and half the protesters' fault.
00:15:09.000 And here it's half the Trump people's fault.
00:15:10.000 If the Trump people hadn't been there being so provocative, then it wouldn't have been up to the Antifa people to hit them.
00:15:16.000 What do you make of all the media coverage?
00:15:19.000 BBC actually uploaded one of those little short videos to Facebook where they spliced together the tax protests and this Berkeley protest and wrote that Trump supporters showed up to the tax protest and started attacking the anti-Trump protesters.
00:15:36.000 That's exactly what they did.
00:15:37.000 After I called them out on Twitter, they've made a few edits to the Facebook post.
00:15:41.000 That was the coverage, just complete and utter lies.
00:15:44.000 It's beyond fake news.
00:15:45.000 It's deliberately lying to people, and they knew what they were doing.
00:15:49.000 So, it's horrifying the state of media.
00:15:53.000 I couldn't believe the coverage after the fact.
00:15:55.000 Yeah, I mean, we saw that obviously throughout the campaign.
00:15:57.000 We kept hearing that it was Trump who was pushing violence at his rallies, but then it would be
00:16:00.000 It would be protesters from Black Lives Matter shutting down an actual Trump rally in Chicago or protesters from the left beating the crap out of Trump supporters in San Jose.
00:16:09.000 It is amazing how the media is able to flip this on its head.
00:16:11.000 So are you guys planning any more of these events?
00:16:13.000 And if you do plan these events in the future, how can you do that knowing that
00:16:18.000 You know, if anybody from the pro-Trump side or the pro-free speech side, because it doesn't matter if you like Trump or not, it's really more of a free speech issue.
00:16:24.000 From the pro-free speech side, if anybody shows up with a weapon, you'll probably immediately be arrested, but if anybody from the left shows up with a weapon, then they probably get off scot-free.
00:16:32.000 Well, Ann Coulter is supposed to be speaking on the 27th.
00:16:35.000 I can't get too much into it, but I think there's some troubles already with that event, with Berkeley trying to shut it down.
00:16:41.000 And this is the thing.
00:16:43.000 We're at the point where we have to defend ourselves.
00:16:46.000 I don't like to see that the state of political discourse in 2017 is fists and mace instead of signs and bullhorns.
00:16:53.000 But that's the reality is that we have to defend ourselves I can't blame the Trump supporters for punching back or the free speech activists for punching back because the cops are gone So I think this is going to continue to escalate until the police stop getting stand-down orders in Berkeley.
00:17:06.000 So what do you think is?
00:17:08.000 Just a final question here.
00:17:09.000 How much of this do you think are the students at Berkeley and how much is it this outside group Antifa?
00:17:12.000 Because there's a lot of talk about that with Milo speaking there, that it wasn't really a bunch of the, it wasn't really a bunch of lefties from Berkeley.
00:17:19.000 It was really this Antifa group that was coming from outside, infiltrating and then making trouble here.
00:17:23.000 It looks like a bunch of Antifa people.
00:17:24.000 And I spoke at Berkeley two years ago.
00:17:26.000 It was not a problem at all.
00:17:27.000 Obviously Milo speaks there as a riot.
00:17:29.000 Ann Coulter is going to speak there.
00:17:30.000 There probably will be a riot.
00:17:31.000 I think it's because Antifa was not a presence when I was there a couple of years ago, and it seems like a pretty recent development, but how much of this do you think is organic, and how much of this is astroturfed?
00:17:40.000 Well, I will say, I went for a walk around the area before the event, and everywhere in Berkeley, the whole damn city is covered in spray paint that says Antifa Zone.
00:17:50.000 And that could be people that have come in.
00:17:52.000 There were definitely people that were brought in from different areas to fight, like the one girl who got decked in the face.
00:17:58.000 She drove down from quite a while to be there.
00:18:02.000 But it's definitely been, over the past two years, I would say, these kids also in university have been
00:18:08.000 Radicalized more and more and more over the media, saying all right-wingers are Nazis.
00:18:11.000 Of course they want to fight and stop Nazism.
00:18:14.000 When they've watched Indiana Jones and Glorious Bastards, they want to get their 100 Nazi scalps, right?
00:18:19.000 And they've truly been convinced this last year that Trump supporters and free speech activists are Nazis.
00:18:25.000 So it's a mix between people coming down and between young people being radicalized over this past year.

00:18:39.000 Thanks for having me.
00:18:40.000 Okay, so before we continue with the analysis of what Trump is doing on foreign policy, and it's a real mixed bag there.
00:18:46.000 There's a bunch of stuff happening on foreign policy that demonstrate continued divided mind among the members of the Trump administration.
00:18:52.000 I want to stop and say thank you to our sponsors over at Blue Apron.

00:20:56.000 On everything from North Korea to Turkey to Iran.
00:20:58.000 So big story of the day is that the Trump administration has now stated that Iran is abiding by its commitments under the Obama nuclear deal.
00:21:09.000 This is just a terrible move by the Trump administration.
00:21:12.000 It is asinine to suggest that everything is hunky-dory with regard to Iran.
00:21:16.000 That Iran is doing everything that it can to abide by the nuclear deal.
00:21:18.000 They obviously are not.
00:21:19.000 There have been multiple reports
00:21:21.000 Then not only are they violating it with regard to attempting to buy certain types of uranium on the open market, but also they have been violating the nuclear deal by test firing ballistic missiles.
00:21:31.000 They've been doing that repeatedly since November.
00:21:33.000 And yet, this is from Rex Tillerson, he says, the US Department of State certified to US House Speaker Paul Ryan today that Iran is compliant
00:21:40.000 We're good to go.
00:22:04.000 This deal is a crap deal.
00:22:06.000 There's no reason why we should be involved this way.
00:22:08.000 But I think there's a split inside the Trump administration.
00:22:11.000 They don't want to start some sort of firefight politically with Iran.
00:22:14.000 They are obviously divided on what to do about Iran because Iran is sponsoring Assad and they're divided about what to do about Assad.
00:22:22.000 They're not sure that Iran is not a solidifying influence in Iraq.
00:22:26.000 This is always my fear about Trumpian foreign policy is that it's just so vague and so all over the place that it opens the door to the continued growth of evil regimes like Iran.
00:22:37.000 But that's not the only problem with Trump foreign policy that's cropped up this week.
00:22:42.000 I want to talk about Turkey and North Korea, but we'll do that
