00:00:00.000 The Trudeau government is the most divisive government in Canadian history.
00:00:03.780 It's no wonder that a lot of Canadians really, really, really hate Justin Trudeau.
00:00:07.880 I'm Candice Malcolm and this is The Candice Malcolm Show.
00:00:14.500 Hi everyone, thank you so much for tuning in. Happy Monday.
00:00:17.320 We have made it into week three of the federal election campaign
00:00:20.880 and I want to point something out, a little bit of a disturbing trend
00:00:24.460 that's starting to happen that's coming out over the weekend.
00:00:27.160 I believe that the media narrative, the legacy media narrative
00:00:30.340 is starting to shift a little bit into Justin Trudeau's favor.
00:00:33.720 Now, we all know that Justin Trudeau has run a horrible first two weeks of the campaign,
00:00:38.460 his whole master plan of running a post-pandemic election
00:00:42.220 where everybody's just so happy to be going back to normal,
00:00:45.700 where he can run on this wedge issue of mandatory vaccinations,
00:00:49.000 where he can send out $500 checks to seniors to bribe them
00:00:52.340 while the CERB money is still being poured out.
00:00:54.640 Trudeau believed that he could easily glide to a majority government,
00:00:58.900 particularly given that the conservative leader Erin O'Toole
00:01:01.420 is still relatively unknown among Canadians.
00:01:04.740 Well, that went all wrong for Trudeau
00:01:06.520 and we have been playing that out and recounting it on the show,
00:01:10.000 on The Candice Malcolm Show, over the past few weeks.
00:01:12.300 But over the weekend, we saw a little bit of a turn, a little bit of a shift,
00:01:15.840 and it is indeed in Justin Trudeau's favor.
00:01:18.300 Now, I'm talking about these protests and these hecklers
00:01:22.440 who have been appearing at several of Trudeau's events throughout the campaign.
00:01:27.020 Trudeau has been heckled, he has been booed,
00:01:29.900 and he has been sort of chased by a few select protesters
00:01:34.040 pretty much everywhere he's gone on this campaign.
00:01:36.660 But over the weekend, things really, really took a turn.
00:01:39.280 So on Friday night, there was a large crowd.
00:01:41.480 Hundreds of people showed up at Trudeau's event in Bolton, Ontario,
00:01:44.800 and just really apparently, according to reports,
00:01:47.960 made it completely impossible for Trudeau to hold his event.
00:01:50.700 So the Ontario police, the OPP,
00:01:52.960 determined that it was unsafe for Trudeau to hold that event,
00:01:56.340 and so it was cancelled.
00:01:58.100 We saw protests, some reports of protests getting violent.
00:02:02.140 We saw other eyewitness reports of racist and misogynistic statements
00:02:07.280 and comments being made by the protesters.
00:02:09.900 Now, I didn't see any audio or video that would corroborate these reports.
00:02:13.780 However, that is what media are reporting.
00:02:16.780 And if that is the case, of course, it should be condemned in its entirety.
00:02:20.400 Racist comments, sexist comments,
00:02:21.840 especially directed towards police and security personnel
00:02:24.660 for the Prime Minister, for the Liberal leader,
00:02:26.860 there's no place for that.
00:02:27.880 That's really ugly.
00:02:28.840 That's really vile stuff.
00:02:29.820 And if that's happening, it should stop.
00:02:32.380 However, when it comes to the rights of Canadians,
00:02:35.580 the right of Canadians to peacefully protest,
00:02:38.060 to show their dismay, to show their anger
00:02:39.840 towards a sitting Prime Minister, towards a government,
00:02:42.680 this is all legitimate stuff.
00:02:44.460 This is all perfectly fine.
00:02:46.260 Of course, the media, what they do,
00:02:48.340 is they take the sort of worst of the worst in the crowd.
00:02:51.440 They show the signs with profanity.
00:02:53.620 They show the angry white men yelling.
00:02:56.060 And what they've done is they've turned this into Justin Trudeau's favor
00:02:59.260 to make him look like that he's this high-minded leader
00:03:02.020 who is going to just continue with his message,
00:03:05.120 regardless of a few far-right fringe cranks,
00:03:08.880 which is exactly how the media is painting these protesters out to be.
00:03:14.800 Now, before we get too much into the details
00:03:16.560 of what is happening to Justin Trudeau
00:03:18.360 and how the media is covering it in just a really silly way,
00:03:22.060 I want to just make the point, the obvious point,
00:03:24.260 that this happens to every politician.
00:03:25.760 When it comes to death threats,
00:03:26.940 when it comes to ugly language,
00:03:28.880 when it comes to the kind of anger that citizens express
00:03:31.920 towards their political leaders,
00:03:33.160 it does happen in every stripe.
00:03:34.720 It's interesting how the legacy media only really pick up on it
00:03:37.720 when it is happening to a left-wing politician
00:03:39.440 or particularly when it's happening to a woman.
00:03:42.340 And we know that because there's been so many reports
00:03:44.980 about Catherine McKenna getting bullied and heckled online.
00:03:48.680 Very few about Michelle Rempel,
00:03:50.720 who gets the same kind of bullying and heckling online.
00:03:54.420 But because she's a conservative, they don't really cover it.
00:03:56.600 Another example would be out in Alberta
00:03:58.340 when NDP leader Rachel Notley was a premier.
00:04:01.120 We would constantly see news stories
00:04:02.780 about how she was getting hateful messages,
00:04:04.980 about how there were death threats,
00:04:06.240 about how right-wing Albertans were really, really angry.
00:04:09.120 Now that the conservative premier Jason Kenney is there,
00:04:12.720 he gets equally, if not more, ugly threats,
00:04:16.040 people posting really horrible things about him,
00:04:18.980 horrible things about his image, everything like that.
00:04:21.100 The same kind of stuff about Rachel Notley, if not worse.
00:04:24.160 And the media never covers it.
00:04:25.660 The media is completely silent.
00:04:27.480 Jason Kenney was even getting death threats against his mother
00:04:30.080 and the media barely batted an eye.
00:04:32.320 So we know that there is already that distinction and that double standard.
00:04:36.920 Of course, it does happen to every politician.
00:04:39.140 It has happened all the way back.
00:04:41.380 There were people circulating online,
00:04:43.340 examples of how Brian Mulroney used to get this,
00:04:46.060 about how Jean Chrétien used to get this.
00:04:47.820 We know Harper used to get this.
00:04:49.440 Here's a couple examples of Harper and Doug Ford
00:04:52.200 and some of the treatment that they get by protesters.
00:04:55.300 And the wrong decisions at the national level,
00:04:57.520 on taxes, on spending, on deficits,
00:04:59.700 they would significantly raise those risks.
00:05:07.520 OK.
00:05:08.760 Préparé.
00:05:10.440 Aujourd'hui.
00:05:11.060 To pit action on climate.
00:05:12.660 Who's ready?
00:05:13.700 Who's going to do it?
00:05:15.520 Who's going to do it?
00:05:16.080 Who's going to do it?
00:05:16.800 Who's going to do it?
00:05:17.580 Who's going to do it?
00:05:18.300 Who's going to do it?
00:05:19.400 Who's going to do it?
00:05:20.360 At a May Day protest outside Queen's Park,
00:05:22.940 photos emerged of a guillotine dripping with fake blood
00:05:26.400 as demonstrators carried out a mock execution.
00:05:29.580 Of course, this isn't right,
00:05:30.600 and we should condemn any violent threats towards politicians.
00:05:33.680 There really shouldn't be room for that kind of language in politics.
00:05:37.140 But the point is, it does happen to everyone.
00:05:39.840 There is a fringe percentage of the population
00:05:42.380 that is going to express their dismay towards government
00:05:45.880 through anger and sometimes crossing the line
00:05:48.380 into violent speech and calls for violence,
00:05:51.460 which is, again, where we draw the line as a society.
00:05:55.200 In a democratic society, you can protest,
00:05:57.140 you can say a lot of things.
00:05:58.400 We have freedom of speech.
00:05:59.540 But when it crosses into violence and death threats,
00:06:01.920 that's when it's too far.
00:06:04.140 Again, the media is not telling the full story
00:06:06.440 to make it seem like Justin Trudeau is the only one
00:06:08.960 who is a victim of this.
00:06:10.580 So, of course, we should condemn the violence,
00:06:12.500 but also we should keep in mind and keep some perspective.
00:06:15.660 Now, this is why I say that things are starting to turn
00:06:17.920 into Justin Trudeau's favor
00:06:19.600 because the media were very, very quick
00:06:21.360 to dismiss these protesters.
00:06:23.320 They call them fringe, they call them far-right,
00:06:25.840 call them unhinged.
00:06:27.120 And every report that I saw,
00:06:28.600 they love to make this point
00:06:29.780 that these protesters are unmasked
00:06:31.760 and not socially distanced.
00:06:33.520 So they're trying to paint them out
00:06:35.140 as the sort of quack, anti-vaxxers, anti-science,
00:06:39.400 the very fringe elements of our society
00:06:41.760 so that you have no sympathy for them
00:06:43.740 and instead you have sympathy for the prime minister.
00:06:46.940 Just look at this CBC report.
00:06:49.020 It's so silly.
00:06:49.980 It's just straight propaganda.
00:06:51.380 Here it goes.
00:06:52.020 It says,
00:06:52.740 Trudeau says he won't back down
00:06:54.380 after protests hurl death threats,
00:06:56.540 racist and sexist slurs.
00:06:58.780 This is Trudeau at his best.
00:07:00.380 This is his favorite type of campaigning
00:07:02.540 and this is the media's favorite iteration of himself.
00:07:05.440 Trudeau is going to continue to promote
00:07:06.860 his message of progress and science
00:07:08.780 and these ugly, horrible protesters
00:07:10.940 are hurling death threats,
00:07:12.680 racist and sexist slurs.
00:07:14.660 And so this whole media story
00:07:17.260 is again just trying to make Justin Trudeau
00:07:19.820 out to be the hero.
00:07:21.380 Some of the quotes in here are just so hilarious.
00:07:23.980 So this is a quote from Trudeau from the story.
00:07:26.540 He goes,
00:07:27.220 No, I'm not going to back down on a message
00:07:29.600 that Canadians know is the right path forward
00:07:31.440 and that's why Canadians need to choose
00:07:33.380 to move forward at this pivotal time.
00:07:35.780 So again, Justin Trudeau gets to play the hero
00:07:38.540 and the media is all too happy
00:07:40.660 to play into this narrative
00:07:42.080 that the people who are protesting him
00:07:43.960 are fringe and are far right.
00:07:45.960 I want to point to my colleague
00:07:47.600 at the Toronto Suns,
00:07:48.860 Brian Lilly's column on this issue
00:07:50.660 because he really, really hit the nail on the head.
00:07:53.240 So Lilly writes,
00:07:54.920 Trudeau's wild claims show
00:07:56.200 that he will say anything to get elected.
00:07:58.860 And Brian Lilly really makes a point
00:08:01.160 that Trudeau is trying to paint his opponents
00:08:04.500 into something that they're not.
00:08:05.820 So rather than running against Aaron O'Toole,
00:08:08.020 rather than running against Jagmeet Singh,
00:08:10.140 he has created this boogeyman in his head
00:08:12.660 of this hateful anti-vaxxer fringe person.
00:08:17.020 And he's talking to the protesters,
00:08:18.720 he's talking down to them
00:08:19.820 and Trudeau is pretending
00:08:21.440 that he is running against that character
00:08:24.280 instead of just running as a liberal
00:08:26.760 and talking about the conservative positions,
00:08:28.740 talking about the NDP positions
00:08:30.400 and sort of explaining how he's different.
00:08:32.280 Instead, he's creating this kind of dramatic image
00:08:35.240 of the country
00:08:36.060 and pretending, again,
00:08:37.620 that he's running against these fringe boogeymen.
00:08:40.080 Lilly points out in his column something interesting.
00:08:43.060 According to a recent Ipsos poll,
00:08:45.020 nearly half of Canadians, 44%,
00:08:47.180 told Ipsos that Trudeau will say anything to get elected.
00:08:50.560 Now, you may think any politician
00:08:52.220 will say anything to get elected.
00:08:53.780 According to the same poll,
00:08:55.280 27% of Canadians said that about Aaron O'Toole
00:08:57.780 and 7% said it about Jagmeet Singh.
00:09:00.120 So Canadians really do have
00:09:01.560 a negative opinion of Justin Trudeau.
00:09:05.260 And so it goes back to what Trudeau was saying
00:09:07.180 over the weekend.
00:09:08.100 This is a quote from Trudeau
00:09:09.180 talking to the protesters.
00:09:10.520 He says,
00:09:11.300 do we fall into division and hatred
00:09:12.900 and racism and violence
00:09:14.060 or do we say no?
00:09:16.000 And now this is why I say
00:09:16.920 that this is Trudeau's favorite iteration of himself
00:09:19.160 and this is his favorite way to campaign.
00:09:21.300 The reality is that Justin Trudeau
00:09:22.660 is an incredibly bitter,
00:09:24.260 incredibly divisive politician.
00:09:25.940 He routinely denigrates Canadians
00:09:28.220 that he disagrees with.
00:09:29.480 He uses hateful and divisive language
00:09:31.360 to describe his political opponents.
00:09:33.500 And he loves nothing more
00:09:34.760 than to describe large swaths of Canadians
00:09:37.500 as racist, Islamophobic.
00:09:40.060 His recent one that he loves
00:09:41.380 is calling them anti-vaxxers.
00:09:43.440 In the last campaign,
00:09:44.440 we saw it over and over again
00:09:45.560 where he would describe his political opponents
00:09:47.300 as white supremacists.
00:09:49.580 So Trudeau will take, again,
00:09:51.060 just the most divisive, despicable way
00:09:52.840 of describing a person
00:09:53.760 and sort of casually apply it
00:09:55.900 to his political opponents.
00:09:58.180 He loves to divide.
00:09:59.620 He loves to pit Canadians against each other.
00:10:02.300 And he is finally in a position
00:10:03.880 where because of these protesters,
00:10:05.640 because of these hecklers,
00:10:06.940 he can once again do that.
00:10:08.920 And the media is all too happy
00:10:10.260 to pick up on this storyline
00:10:11.720 and push it for Justin Trudeau.
00:10:14.160 So here's just a few examples
00:10:15.360 of Trudeau and his team of liberals
00:10:17.240 doing what they love to do most,
00:10:19.320 which is to name-call Canadians
00:10:21.260 and to divide us against each other.
00:10:22.860 I recommend that the members
00:10:24.420 of the Conservative Party,
00:10:25.460 in their zeal to make personal attacks,
00:10:27.920 not start to push too far into intolerance
00:10:30.940 towards Canadians of diverse origins.
00:10:33.520 My view is that we will be more successful collectively
00:10:36.480 if we're actually able to successfully
00:10:38.720 promote women into leadership roles.
00:10:41.160 We will drag along the Neanderthals
00:10:43.080 who don't agree with that,
00:10:44.020 and that will be our continuing approach.
00:10:47.260 They ran an election
00:10:48.700 on snitch lines against Muslims.
00:10:51.680 They ran an election
00:10:52.620 on Islamophobia and division.
00:10:55.720 This is interesting
00:10:56.620 because we've all seen
00:10:57.940 Conservative politicians
00:10:59.440 casting doubt on science,
00:11:01.800 casting doubt on experts,
00:11:03.340 saying the pandemic isn't real,
00:11:05.320 you shouldn't wear masks.
00:11:06.620 The Harper Conservatives
00:11:07.720 put in measures in the Citizenship Act
00:11:09.620 that told Canadians like me
00:11:11.500 that we were below those
00:11:12.860 who were born on Canadian soil.
00:11:15.180 Mr. Speaker,
00:11:16.060 after being asked directly
00:11:17.360 to condemn white supremacists yesterday,
00:11:19.900 the leader of the opposition
00:11:21.080 not only refused to do so,
00:11:23.480 he refused to even say the words.
00:11:25.720 So I will give him another opportunity
00:11:27.280 to do so today.
00:11:28.940 And through his deputy leader,
00:11:31.180 will he denounce white supremacy,
00:11:32.940 the alt-right movement,
00:11:33.840 and finally apologize
00:11:34.860 for sharing a platform with him?
00:11:36.620 Trudeau and company
00:11:37.700 love to mischaracterize
00:11:39.140 their opponents,
00:11:39.920 call them obscene names,
00:11:41.580 accuse them of horrible,
00:11:42.740 horrible things
00:11:43.260 like being a racist,
00:11:44.280 an Islamophobe,
00:11:45.400 a white supremacist,
00:11:46.600 and so on.
00:11:47.660 But if you think about it,
00:11:48.560 think about those people
00:11:49.420 who have come out
00:11:50.260 to protest against Justin Trudeau.
00:11:52.360 Sure, they don't represent
00:11:53.260 the majority of Canadians,
00:11:55.040 but their voice still matters.
00:11:56.960 And it is important to reflect
00:11:58.400 on what has happened
00:11:59.760 in our country
00:12:00.540 over the past two years
00:12:02.080 that would drive some Canadians,
00:12:04.060 probably reasonable Canadians,
00:12:05.360 to act in this way,
00:12:07.180 to go and protest,
00:12:08.340 to heckle,
00:12:09.160 to scream obscenities.
00:12:10.300 Imagine the point
00:12:11.300 that you would have to be,
00:12:12.060 the breaking point
00:12:12.720 that you would have to be
00:12:13.540 to go and do that.
00:12:14.900 Just think of the number
00:12:15.700 of Canadians
00:12:16.220 who have had to see
00:12:17.880 their business shut down,
00:12:19.240 whose business has been forced
00:12:20.420 to close because of
00:12:21.640 lockdown policies.
00:12:22.720 Imagine the number of families
00:12:23.800 who have gone bankrupt.
00:12:25.380 Imagine the number of families
00:12:26.560 who have lost a loved one
00:12:27.920 during this time,
00:12:28.740 not just to COVID,
00:12:29.740 but to diseases of despair,
00:12:31.520 things like suicide,
00:12:32.820 drug overdose,
00:12:33.500 depression,
00:12:34.940 and so on.
00:12:36.260 Now that we finally have
00:12:37.520 an end in sight,
00:12:38.760 that the pandemic
00:12:39.620 may finally be behind us,
00:12:41.240 that we won't have to endure
00:12:42.280 more lockdowns,
00:12:43.860 Trudeau is running
00:12:44.760 an incredibly divisive campaign
00:12:46.820 on the wedge issue
00:12:48.100 of forced vaccinations.
00:12:50.100 Even for people
00:12:50.980 who have already had COVID
00:12:52.260 and developed the antibodies.
00:12:53.740 Even for people
00:12:54.440 who are incredibly healthy.
00:12:55.780 For young people.
00:12:56.780 For people with
00:12:57.360 pre-existing medical conditions.
00:12:59.220 And for people
00:13:00.100 who disagree on moral grounds,
00:13:01.760 it doesn't matter.
00:13:02.560 Trudeau wants to force
00:13:03.640 all of us
00:13:04.360 to get the vaccine.
00:13:06.420 And now he wants
00:13:07.420 to further divide us
00:13:08.740 by forcing us
00:13:09.800 to carry around papers
00:13:11.280 indicating whether or not
00:13:12.940 we have followed
00:13:14.120 the ever-evolving
00:13:15.520 government health edicts.
00:13:17.840 This doesn't sound
00:13:18.720 very much like a free society.
00:13:20.220 And at times,
00:13:20.940 over the past two years,
00:13:22.360 Canada hasn't felt
00:13:23.420 very much like
00:13:24.420 a free society.
00:13:25.320 It hasn't felt like
00:13:26.260 a free, liberal democracy.
00:13:29.000 Canadians have every right
00:13:30.260 to protest against
00:13:31.500 these measures.
00:13:32.400 Canadians have every right
00:13:33.520 to protest against
00:13:34.860 the Trudeau government
00:13:35.720 regardless of what the CBC
00:13:37.180 and what the legacy
00:13:38.320 media have to say.
00:13:39.980 And Canadians deserve better
00:13:41.140 than an arrogant
00:13:42.020 and divisive leader
00:13:43.780 that pits us
00:13:44.580 against each other.
00:13:45.480 I'm Candice Malcolm
00:13:46.020 and this is
00:13:46.640 The Candice Malcolm Show.
