01:37:01.020 It actually happens on both sides.

01:37:02.200 But we notice it most on the left because they're usually more reputable organizations,

01:37:06.580 not one just kind of thrown into the news cycle at the last second.

01:37:09.260 And that is understandable and it does happen.

01:37:13.320 But a lot of these pollsters are rewarded not only by major news organizations with big

01:37:18.260 contracts, but also by campaigns who want their polling expertise.

01:37:22.860 If you're accurate, you get more money, you get more prestige, all these things.

01:37:26.840 So they try to fix these problems.

01:37:30.560 What they all kind of came together afterward.

01:37:32.660 Hey, we missed the polls on Donald Trump by a lot.

01:37:35.920 One of the things they noticed about their own polling is they weren't waiting for education

01:37:39.480 And when they actually saw, hey, Donald Trump is doing really well among non-college educated

01:37:45.260 voters and we didn't pick that up.

01:37:48.240 And a lot of these voters came out.

01:37:51.180 This is what's going to solve this problem.

01:37:52.880 So in twenty twenty, they corrected for that problem.

01:37:56.160 Now, it did not solve the overall issue.

01:37:59.040 Again, Donald Trump was underestimated.

01:38:00.640 In fact, even by more in twenty twenty than he was in twenty sixteen.

01:38:06.740 One of the leading theories on this is covid.

01:38:10.280 Basically, by the time the election was going on and they were doing this polling, most Republicans

01:38:14.820 had laughed off covid and were now out living their lives again.

01:38:19.340 They weren't answering the phones.

01:38:20.280 They didn't want to talk to pollsters.

01:38:22.800 Democrats were locked inside their homes and hadn't spoken to anyone in months.

01:38:26.220 So when a pollster called, they were like, hey, yes, someone's talking to me.

01:38:29.560 Oh, my gosh, I normally don't talk to people on the phone without a mask on, but I'll talk

01:38:35.340 to you.

01:38:35.880 And so they were they had much better response levels.

01:38:38.580 And there's a non-response bias that sometimes affects these polls.

01:38:41.820 Republicans are already less likely to want to talk to pollsters in the first place.

01:38:45.980 And so that was their theory for twenty twenty.

01:38:48.840 Again, they are trying to.

01:38:50.700 Obviously, covid is no longer a factor, but they are trying to correct for that.

01:38:54.320 If they are successful in correcting that, then Donald Trump is not underestimated, could

01:39:01.000 even go the other way and we could have real problems.

01:39:03.320 Harry Enten, who's a data guy over at CNN, who's actually, despite the fact that he works

01:39:08.080 at CNN, very good, pointed this out.

01:39:10.360 I did not know this in all going all the way back to the 70s.

01:39:14.180 One side of the aisle has never been underestimated three elections in a row when it comes to

01:39:20.880 presidential candidates.

01:39:23.000 Now, I think there's real evidence and a real reason to believe that Donald Trump is pretty

01:39:30.160 He's going to be underestimated every single time he runs.

01:39:34.880 So usually pollsters can get this stuff fixed by an election or two and, you know, maybe

01:39:51.640 I think Donald Trump's the favorite, but he's not the overwhelming favorite.
