01:34:44.300 and I was normally going to, like, an Islamic school.

01:34:47.000 So I was writing out a list of all of the names of my friends,

01:34:51.500 and my mom came by and saw the list, grabbed it from my hand.

01:34:56.000 And, you know, I'm not stupid.

01:34:59.120 There were no boys' names on that list.

01:35:00.900 It was all girls. 1.00

01:35:02.360 And so I thought, well, this will be fine.

01:35:04.180 It's only girls' names.

01:35:05.320 But no, she was so angry that I had made friends, and she was so angry at the fact that I was excited and happy about it.

01:35:15.280 She thought sending me to public school with hijab on, that I was going to be ostracized and bullied,

01:35:20.660 and that I would learn that these non-Muslims were nothing but trouble, and I would learn that I wanted nothing to do with them. 1.00

01:35:27.360 But instead, I made friends with them, and I was happy to be there, and that just killed her.

01:35:33.480 And so she decided then that I was no longer going to continue school.

01:35:37.920 You're being homeschooled from now on, which basically meant you're staying home and, you know, cooking and cleaning.

01:35:44.980 And so I had to finish the year because she couldn't just pull me out, and it was like the very end of the school year.

01:36:02.120 And my drama teacher came up to me, and he's like, Yasmin, you're so different.

01:36:25.740 You know, I told him my mom's going to pull me out of school, and this was like my first breath, my first, you know, moment of like a bit of freedom was to come to the school and to, you know, live a little bit of freedom for a bit of my life.

01:36:41.460 And now she's going to take it back from me, and I'm going to go back to forced to be living, like, forced to not be able to go to this school anymore.

01:36:49.580 And so we talked some more about it, and then I eventually confided in him about all of the abuse that was going on in the home.

01:36:58.280 And I shared with him everything, not knowing that as a teacher in a public school, it was his, you know, he had to.

01:37:09.000 Legal responsibility.

01:37:09.480 Yeah, it was his, you got it.

01:37:12.020 So it was his legal responsibility to contact the authorities, and that's what he did.

01:37:16.260 So he contacted the police, and then they contacted child services, and then there was this whole investigation.

01:37:22.660 So it was the three of us, and then his two children as well.

01:37:28.460 All of us were questioned and everything about him.

01:37:31.620 Mind you, his daughter had gone to school the year prior with four fingers on her face, like bruised on her face. 0.79

01:37:39.140 And one of the teachers called the authorities at that point and said, I think this child is being abused in the home.

01:37:47.120 And when they asked her, she said, no, no, no, it was an accident.

01:37:51.120 It was, those aren't fingers.

01:37:52.580 Nobody slapped me, whatever.

01:37:53.900 And she denied it.

01:37:54.980 But they still had a record of it.

01:37:56.660 So when I came forth with my complaint, this was the second time that child services was getting a complaint from this man.

01:38:05.980 And still, after we went through the whole investigative system and the whole court case and everything, in the end, the judge said, this is a cultural issue.

01:38:19.060 This is a religious issue.

01:38:21.360 He has the right to discipline his kids how he sees fit, and it's not our place to intervene.

01:38:29.940 It's not the government's place to intervene.

01:38:32.020 And they knew about everything, Glenn.

01:38:33.980 I had told them about all of the beatings with their belts, and I told them about the hanging upside down and everything.

01:38:42.280 And they still said, well, you know, that's just your culture.

01:38:47.020 That's just your ethnicity, your religion, your race, your whatever.

01:38:50.800 That you're just going to have to endure.

01:38:56.680 It cost me, really, my sense of ever feeling like there would ever be a way for me to escape.

01:39:10.460 and I never believed it because my teachers, like Mr. Fabro, you know, just the people in the stores, average folks, my friends, my non-Muslim friends,

01:39:22.520 they were all, you know, proving that she was a liar and that she was wrong and that they were all good people,

01:39:29.920 and they didn't want me dead and they didn't hate me.

01:39:32.300 But when this happened with this judge, it kind of made it all come tumbling down.

01:39:47.820 I mean, for a 13-year-old girl to stand up against her parents in a court of law and for you to tell that 13-year-old girl,

01:39:57.420 no, you have to go back to the house where you just told us about all of the torture and punishments that you're enduring.

01:40:03.860 You know, what that judge did was he sentenced me to a life that was worse than the one I was complaining about

01:40:10.680 because now they were able to not only treat me so badly, but it came with humiliation.

01:40:15.820 It came with the psychological torture of, now what are you going to do about it?
