00:00:00.560 Greetings my esteemed Laddingtons. Shoutout to my man, Jean, for gifting me this fine game.
00:00:08.320 Very heartfelt and appreciated. So, first and foremost, I have a question for all English
00:00:14.400 guys and everyone who's interested in English history. When you meditate and contemplate on
00:00:21.920 the Wars of the Roses, which side are you on? Are you on the Lancaster side or the York side?
00:00:29.360 Let me know in the comment section below. It's of utmost importance that we discuss this
00:00:35.600 this interesting topic. Now I thought to, before I begin to get into the actual gameplay, I would
00:00:43.680 like to give a book recommendation and that is Connie Gilden's series on the Wars of the Roses.
00:00:53.920 Good stuff. I always recommend everything he writes. I have read almost all of his books. I
00:00:59.120 have one book which I bought immediately upon seeing that it was released, but I have saved
00:01:06.640 it. It's set in ancient Greece, so I can't read it now in winter. I'm checking in from Jotunheim,
00:01:13.440 glorious snow landscape, but I must wait until reading this book, until Helios comes back in
00:01:20.240 force so I can sit outside in the sun with a good cup of coffee and read that book. So I'm savoring
00:01:27.760 it. I'm saving it for a good occasion. Anyway, long story short, if you want a good series on that time,
00:01:35.680 I can definitely recommend Connie Gilden. Another good British author, Bernard Cornwell. I recommend his
00:01:42.480 work, his books before. I'll do it again. Now, of course, the Uthred series might be his most famous one,
00:01:50.000 but he has also written about the Hundred Years War, similar to this time as well, so the late Middle Ages.
00:01:58.800 Now, why do I mention all of these things now, you wonder? Yes, because Edward Longshanks, he's a bit before,
00:02:06.800 so you see there in the description, it's 1264 to 1307. And also, last thing before I begin to
00:02:14.880 get into the gameplay, I have a TV series recommendation. It's based on books by Philippa
00:02:22.480 Gregory. It's called The White Princess and The White Queen. Quite good, actually. Available at HBO,
00:02:30.000 obviously not a service I recommend per se, but they had it there at least, and worthwhile watching.
00:02:36.240 I can definitely recommend those two seasons. The only thing I need to strongly object to was a
00:02:43.840 sequence where they visit the Spanish court. Now, of course, the Spanish court descended from Visigoths, 1.00
00:02:50.720 and the princess, they're there to make a match for their son to marry the Spanish princess. She erupts
00:02:57.600 into a flamenco dance into a flamenco dance, and I can assure you that no Spanish royalty would have 1.00
00:03:04.480 erupted into a flamenco dance. It was something that detracted quite a bit from the quality of the
00:03:10.880 series. It was, yeah, not good in the least. I am a great friend and admirer of Spanish history and
00:03:18.080 culture, so I need to defend Spain's good name and say that royalty did absolutely not dance
00:03:25.280 flamenco dances. Anyway, that being said, the rest of the series is quite good. The third season is an
00:03:32.240 absolute catastrophe, but I won't blackpill you by talking more about that. Anyway, this particular DLC,
00:03:39.360 you have a new civilization, the Burgundians. I won't get into the Grand Dukes now, maybe for a
00:03:47.520 coming video, who knows, depending on how popular this one is. Then you have the Hotevilles. I don't 1.00
00:03:54.880 know how you pronounce it. To my great shame, I do not speak French. Highly barbaric of me. I must 1.00
00:04:02.320 redeem myself by praying extra hard in the Temple of Iron. I read German. That was my language in
00:04:09.280 school. You could choose between a few different languages. The most common ones were French,
00:04:15.520 Spanish and German. Anyway, this might be an interesting topic for a podcast talking about
00:04:22.720 the Normans. So you see here, Robert de Hotevilles left Normandy in 1047 with a small rubber band.
00:04:31.520 Allow me to translate it. He left Normandy with a
00:04:35.920 heroic mannerbund of glorious shield brothers. And they sought to mog others. That's the actual
00:04:46.000 story. But in all seriousness though, the most famous Norman, of course, William the Conqueror,
00:04:52.640 conquered merry old England in 1066. But they were quite adventurous, these guys. Vikings imbued with a
00:05:01.120 high level of thumos that made them conquer and explore. I will talk about it in another video,
00:05:09.040 in a podcast, going through the history of the Normans, who can derive inspiration from them.
00:05:15.040 So anyway, that might also be for a coming video if there is any interest in it. Let's get into Edward
00:05:21.680 Longshanks. And you probably recognize this name. He's the villain in Braveheart. When you see
00:05:27.840 this time period from the perspective of the Scots, he is the villain. You can also read about
00:05:36.480 many good books about Robert the Bruce as well. You have a British author, Robin Young, female author,
00:05:44.720 written great books on this time as well, from the perspective of Scots. I can definitely recommend it.
00:05:51.440 Anyway, let's get into the campaign. So we have here merry old England and we'll travel to Wales,
00:05:59.440 Scotland and to the Holy Land. So let's get into it. Vain ambition. Boom.
00:06:05.280 It is the curse of all royalty to be compared with their forebears. My illustrious father built himself
00:06:14.160 a kingdom in his youth. Now I can barely hold onto it in mine. I hear all of the nobility's whisperings
00:06:22.720 at court. They say that I may be king of England by birth, but I will never be so by merit.
00:06:29.200 That I, Edward II, am unworthy of my father's name. How much longer until these whispers become cries of rebellion?
00:06:41.680 My heart quivers when I visit his tomb in the Abbey. I am wracked by fear. It claws at my soul like the talons of demons.
00:06:52.720 Fear that I will prove them right. That I will disgrace this family's legacy as my grandfather did.
00:07:02.240 Yet I must not give in. I will study my father's reign and hope that it will imbue me with his strength.
00:07:11.040 The fortitude that I so lack. My father, Edward, spent his youth watching in disgust as his ineffectual
00:07:19.200 father Henry drove England to the brink of ruin. When his subjects could bear his ruinous reign no more,
00:07:27.680 a rebellion led by the baron Simone de Mounfort deposed Henry, leaving his kingdom in tatters.
00:07:34.320 After the disastrous battle of Lewis, the baronial forces captured and jailed my father and grandfather in Hereford.
00:07:41.360 Some kings begin their rise to the throne from within the palace. Edward began his from the anguish of imprisonment.
00:07:51.760 Yet even when the future seems bleak, fate occasionally extends its hand and offers allies from the most unlikely of places.
00:08:01.520 All right, as always in Age of Empires, epic and atmospheric introductions.
00:08:12.080 So now we're in the game. Edward Longshanks must survive and Gilbert de Clare must survive.
00:08:18.000 Again, excuse my French if I mispronounce it. I hope I pronounce it correctly.
00:08:26.320 My man, the extremely aesthetic Guillaume, can tell me how my French pronunciation is.
00:08:32.640 Anyway, let's get into it.
00:08:41.200 Let us do so. Edward Longshanks. And a note here, these aesthetics, these three golden English lions,
00:08:49.440 Norman lions, absolute aesthetic, need to make some sort of Legu Gloria garments.
00:08:56.320 On a similar note, do let me know also in the comment section who your favorite English king might be.
00:09:06.000 Who's the most interesting or inspiring or whatever.
00:09:09.440 I always read the comments in Let's Play videos.
00:09:14.960 We must mog these new males.
00:09:17.760 Aha, they were quite many.
00:09:29.040 I need to run around with them a bit so they can mog these guys.
00:09:32.480 I might also edit this video a little bit to make it more exciting, I suppose.
00:09:42.560 These guys, they want to question the validity of my claim to the English throne is what Edward says here.
00:09:56.560 The reason I am more responsive on Let's Play videos is that the overall amount of comments
00:10:05.600 much less, so I can have the opportunity to respond to more of them.
00:10:09.840 Otherwise, I usually feel quite bad if I only respond to some comments.
00:10:16.000 And of course, on GabMind's Patreon Subscribestar, I'm always very responsive.
00:10:23.440 This might be the thumbnail for the video.
00:10:37.760 This aesthetics, the red and then golden lions on it.
00:10:42.560 Absolutely, absolutely aesthetically pleasing.
00:10:48.240 Aha, we have some other blasphemous enemies here.
00:10:56.160 We need to avoid them.
00:10:58.480 If we can, I'm not sure we can actually.
00:11:02.480 Aha, one saw us. 0.99
00:11:05.200 Alright, turn around lads and illuminate this bastard. 0.98
00:11:13.200 I'll say note on the music. 0.99
00:11:14.800 It's very literally speaking music to my ears.
00:11:21.040 Since I grew up with this soundtrack, said Age of Empires, I've said it before, I'll say it again.
00:11:27.840 Age of Empires, both Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology are sacred to me.
00:11:33.840 I am extremely thankful for growing up with them.
00:11:37.280 Extremely thankful for the interest in history they supplied me with.
00:11:42.240 And yeah, sacred games, I'm sure many of you feel the same way if you've grown up with it.
00:11:49.760 Good times, good times.
00:11:51.760 We need to fight these guys as well.
00:11:57.360 Out on thin ice here, we can't lose this guy because then we lose the campaign.
00:12:04.480 He needs to survive.
00:12:07.840 He needs to survive the jive.
00:12:12.720 A great channel, which I'm sure you're all fully familiar with.
00:12:18.640 If you're not, search for it and enlighten yourself about pagan history and other good stuff.
00:12:24.880 Good stuff, good stuff.
00:12:32.880 So now I will do a little edit here and I will build up and I will get right back when I have
00:12:41.520 progressed further in the campaign.
00:12:44.080 So be right back.
00:12:46.160 All right, so I am back.
00:12:47.680 I did a little edit there as you noticed and I decided to do a little boom with my
00:12:57.200 little village here.
00:12:58.160 So I built an additional town center there and one here and now I'm gathering some
00:13:05.920 stone to build a castle since the forces are coming quite soon.
00:13:11.840 So I will place the castle there, I suppose, and I don't even know if we have enough time to build it.
00:13:19.920 I suppose not.
00:13:21.360 Oh well, I have created a little army that will withstand the onslaught, the baronial forces. 1.00
00:13:31.280 So we'll see what is going on now.
00:13:35.920 Let's see, I need to gather some more wood.
00:13:38.640 So the tall prince has escaped my clutches. 1.00
00:13:41.840 For now, I shall assemble the baronial army myself and prove him to be as foolish as his father. 1.00
00:13:50.960 Wales casts its slotting with the barons. 0.99
00:13:53.760 We will help you return the brash longshanks to his cell. 1.00
00:13:57.200 Our holdings in Worcester can support but a small force.
00:14:00.880 We must strike quickly to bring our rivals back into the fold and even the odds.
00:14:07.680 That is noted.
00:14:09.040 So they didn't actually come to attack us.
00:14:12.240 They expect us to go to them, to mog them.
00:14:17.600 That is fine.
00:14:18.720 I suppose that's what we'll have to do.
00:14:21.600 Here is my favorite unique unit, by the way.
00:14:24.080 The English longbowmen.
00:14:28.880 Highly joyous to create them.
00:14:35.520 Anyway, I will attack someone, I suppose. 0.96
00:14:38.640 The Welsh, perhaps, they need to be subjugated. 1.00
00:14:45.120 And we'll see what happens after that.
00:14:50.400 We have reached the Welsh.
00:14:52.960 They're not prepared to face our army.
00:14:59.440 Or maybe they are, actually.
00:15:01.760 And I need to make sure that Edward doesn't die here.
00:15:06.160 That would be a bit silly if he does.
00:15:09.280 Maybe I should actually have brought some knights or something.
00:15:12.800 We can go back and create some.
00:15:14.000 And send them up.
00:15:18.080 Otherwise, we might have a hard time taking down all of their buildings here.
00:15:23.360 Another edit, as you might have noticed.
00:15:33.760 So I subjugated the Welsh. 1.00
00:15:35.600 They are now on our side.
00:15:37.040 And now I am putting on some pressure on this Kennilworth.
00:15:43.120 And they're being protected by the Baronial forces.
00:15:47.200 And Simon the Younger. 1.00
00:15:49.280 So we need to kill this guy. 1.00
00:15:51.600 And hopefully get this citadel city over to us. 0.99
00:16:07.120 Now we are less than three minutes until the Baronial forces attack us.
00:16:12.080 And we're going to see if we can actually conquer this city in that time.
00:16:19.120 I suppose that will reduce the amount of enemies that will come at us.
00:16:25.600 We'll see how that goes.
00:16:27.440 I have a battering ram.
00:16:29.440 In addition to my army here of crossbowmen and longbowmen.
00:16:35.760 So the gate is down.
00:16:37.600 Can we make it in time?
00:16:39.040 I don't really suppose we can.
00:16:40.800 But we'll see. 0.80
00:16:45.120 We can at least destroy part of their town.
00:16:50.000 Maybe I shouldn't have left the home base unprotected.
00:16:55.200 In case they attack.
00:16:56.160 But it's a gamble.
00:16:57.360 We'll see.
00:16:59.200 How it turns out.
00:17:07.840 We have a unit.
00:17:09.120 A sergeant.
00:17:10.240 I haven't seen before.
00:17:12.080 Looking quite aesthetic.
00:17:13.040 Enough tarrying.
00:17:14.880 My knights come for you.
00:17:17.440 My Baloros.
00:17:18.720 What rash.
00:17:22.400 Okay.
00:17:22.800 His knights are coming.
00:17:27.440 And we were just a bit too late to destroy this city.
00:17:33.120 Anyway.
00:17:33.440 Let's look over our defenses.
00:17:35.120 We are at population limit here.
00:17:37.840 So we can't really create more soldiers.
00:17:39.600 But if we can.
00:17:42.160 We can train some knights and stuff.
00:17:48.720 I don't really see where this Laddington might be though.
00:17:53.520 Maybe he comes with a surprise attack.
00:17:56.800 I will then counter with a surprise flex.
00:18:01.280 Hopefully that will get him to abandon his hostility towards us.
00:18:09.600 We'll see.
00:18:12.160 With their forces in disarray.
00:18:13.840 The rest will be compelled to fall before me and beg for mercy.
00:18:19.520 Okay.
00:18:19.920 So that was it.
00:18:21.360 We just had to subdue them.
00:18:24.080 Press continue.
00:18:25.040 Like his Norman ancestors, Gilbert de Clare was a shrewd opportunist.
00:18:32.560 Initially a commander in the rebel army.
00:18:35.360 He keenly sensed its divisions and saw that he could further his own ambitions by defecting to
00:18:41.600 Edward.
00:18:42.880 My father moved with alarming speed.
00:18:46.000 Worcester and Glowchester, Gilbert's family seat, were seized without delay.
00:18:51.360 After a string of further victories, he compelled the leaderless and battered rebel forces to capitulate.
00:18:58.880 Known by many as Longshanks, Edward was feared for his imposing stature and foul temper.
00:19:07.280 While Henry was restored to the throne, all were well aware that Edward was now the true power behind it.
00:19:13.840 Good stuff, good stuff.
00:19:16.800 I thought about ending the episode there, but we're actually going to have a quick look at
00:19:22.000 A Man of God.
00:19:22.960 I think this is the only reasonable course of action, so let's get into it.
00:19:31.440 Ruthless and cunning, Edward did not always adhere to the chivalric codes that the European nobility held so dear.
00:19:41.200 After massacring Simone the Younger's men in a stealthy night attack on Kenilworth,
00:19:47.280 he used the captured banners to disguise his army before smashing Demonefor at Yvesham.
00:19:54.800 In an act of alarming brutality, the corpse of Demonefor, an Earl of England,
00:20:01.040 was hacked into carrion and his head mounted on a pike. 0.98
00:20:05.280 Edward had won the war and cowed the rebels into submission in just over a year,
00:20:10.720 but the victory came at the cost of his honor.
00:20:13.280 Nobility and clergy alike cringed at the thought of an impious butcher one day ascending to the throne of England.
00:20:23.280 To restore his ailing reputation and prove himself worthy of the crown,
00:20:28.800 my father resolved to lead a crusade east to the Holy Land, where the situation grew increasingly dire.
00:20:35.840 The voracious Mamluk Sultanate waged a fierce war of expansion, first against the Mongols and now against the beleaguered crusaders. 0.96
00:20:46.880 Several fortresses quickly fell before their unstoppable onslaught.
00:20:52.320 Their leader was Sultan Baibars, a man not unlike my father, Edward.
00:20:58.800 Originally a slave of Cumin origin, he rose to prominence through military service,
00:21:04.240 and had recently taken power after murdering the reigning Sultan.
00:21:08.800 Having just slaughtered the population of Antioch, his armies now threatened Ochre and Tripoli from the east,
00:21:16.320 converging on both cities in a suffocating siege.
00:21:20.480 Edward's army arrived in Ochre to find the inhabitants desperate, but not beyond hope.
00:21:27.600 You crusaders of solidar lands long enough, it will drag you from your castles and into the sea. 0.99
00:21:34.160 All right, I mainly just wanted to look at that intro.
00:21:40.000 We have a beautiful city here as well we need to defend, but I will actually leave it there for this time,
00:21:48.480 and I will see you all on Telegram, I suppose, if you're not already following me there.
00:21:55.200 Also follow me on Gab and Minds.
00:21:59.680 So, now, thank you for watching.
00:22:01.120 XO XO, BOO! 0.98
