00:00:00.000 Hello everybody, I'm John Fawcett with this Great America Show Midday Update for Thursday, January 16th.
00:00:06.240 President Trump's cabinet nominees back in the Senate today for their respective hearings.
00:00:11.120 On today's slate was Doug Bergram, who's his nominee for the Interior,
00:00:14.960 Scott Turner for Housing and Urban Development, Lee Zeldin over at the EPA,
00:00:20.520 Pam Bondi, rather, was back in for Day 2 with the Senate Judiciary Committee, 1.00
00:00:25.320 and Scott Besant for the Treasury Department, which brings us to our person of the day.
00:00:31.820 With Scott Besant taking Senator Ron Wyden to task, the Marxist dem from Oregon,
00:00:37.980 doesn't really know much about anything, let alone tariffs.
00:00:41.080 Take a listen to this exchange between Scott Besant and Ron Wyden on the issue of Trump's tariffs.
00:00:46.980 I believe these tariffs, you can call it whatever you want in terms of trying to gussy it up,
00:00:53.040 they're going to be paid for by our workers and small businesses.
00:00:57.560 And all through the campaign we heard they weren't, that foreign countries were going to pay it.
00:01:01.120 I think that's baloney. It's going to be paid for by workers and small businesses.
00:01:05.520 So, your response?
00:01:07.500 Yes, Senator, I would respectfully disagree.
00:01:11.140 And the history of tariffs and tariff theory, optimal tariff theory, does not support what you're saying.
00:01:18.900 Traditionally, we see that the current, if we were to say use a number that has been thrown around in the press of 10%,
00:01:28.120 then traditionally the currency appreciates by 4%, so the 10% is not passed through.
00:01:36.500 Then we have various elasticities, consumer preferences may change.
00:01:41.640 And finally, foreign manufacturers, especially China, especially China, which is trying to export their way out of their current economic malaise,
00:01:54.300 they will continue cutting prices to maintain market share.
00:01:58.800 As you heard it there, folks, Scott Besant absolutely wiping the floor with Senator Ron Wyden,
00:02:05.100 who really doesn't know what he's talking about, let alone when it comes to tariffs.
00:02:10.140 And President-elect Donald Trump wants to make Hollywood great again,
00:02:14.440 has named a trio of entertainment industry veterans, John Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone,
00:02:20.680 as his special envoys to carry out a formidable task.
00:02:24.560 Trump made the announcement on Thursday in Truth Social saying,
00:02:28.480 It's my honor to announce John Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone
00:02:31.940 to be special ambassadors to the great but very troubled place of Hollywood, California.
00:02:36.340 They will serve as special envoys for me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood,
00:02:40.720 which has lost much business over the last four years, to foreign countries.
00:02:45.800 We're going to bring it back bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.
00:02:50.180 Trump said the three stars will service his eyes and ears on the ground,
00:02:53.120 and he will get done whatever they suggest.
00:02:56.240 It will be great again like the United States of America,
00:02:59.440 the golden age of Hollywood, says President Trump.
00:03:01.880 President Trump, absolute mastermind, brilliant mind with coming up with things like this.
00:03:08.580 Hollywood does need to be made great again,
00:03:10.760 and I think those three folks can certainly make an impact.
00:03:14.900 And Governor Ron DeSantis of the great state of Florida has made a decision
00:03:19.220 on who to appoint to take over Senator Marco Rubio's seat,
00:03:23.660 outgoing Senator Marco Rubio, once confirmed for Secretary of State.
00:03:27.360 Governor Ron DeSantis has tapped Ashley Moody to be the next senator from the great state of Florida.
00:03:34.540 Ashley Moody currently serves as the Florida Attorney General.
00:03:38.360 It's going to be interesting to see if she's America first or not.
00:03:42.460 Moody, after President Trump's second failed assassination attempt at his golf course,
00:03:47.500 had said she was running her own investigation into what happened there,
00:03:51.440 and we still don't know the results of it.
00:03:53.920 So we're hoping she's actually America first, 1.00
00:03:56.900 and we're going to not need Congressman Corey Mills of also the great state of Florida
00:04:01.500 to go ahead and primary her when that seat's up for re-election. 0.99
