The John-Henry Westen Show - Cardinal Arinze on the NEW POPE： “Pray for Courage and Faithfulness” ｜ Papal Conclave Reflections

00:00:00.000 You assess, you study, you watch, you admire.

00:00:04.820 So it is that sort of thing that we do for two weeks.

00:00:09.560 Hello, my friends.

00:00:10.640 It gives me a great honor and privilege

00:00:12.760 to be with Cardinal Francis Rinzai.

00:00:16.520 His Eminence has graciously allowed us to interview him

00:00:19.460 during these days of the lead-up to the conclave,

00:00:24.060 the historic conclave for the time of the election

00:00:28.100 of a new pope.

00:00:30.360 And Cardinal Rinzai is now 92 years old,

00:00:33.660 so he's not taking part in the conclave proper,

00:00:36.320 but he's part of what's called the general congregations

00:00:39.700 that are the meetings of cardinals

00:00:41.380 that happen before a conclave starts.

00:00:44.640 And they're pretty grueling schedules,

00:00:46.640 so we're really grateful to your Eminence

00:00:49.220 for allowing us this interview,

00:00:51.360 and we pray for your strength.

00:00:53.580 Thank you. God bless and guide you.

00:00:56.420 Amen, amen.

00:00:57.640 We always start with the sign of the cross.

00:00:59.700 Would you lead us in that?

00:01:01.260 In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

00:01:04.800 and of the Holy Spirit.

00:01:06.460 Amen.

00:01:07.500 We beg you, O Lord, to direct us in all our thoughts

00:01:11.140 and words and actions that they may begin with your help,

00:01:17.000 continue with that grace,

00:01:19.280 and be brought to a happy end by your own helping hand.

00:01:25.360 Through Christ our Lord.

00:01:27.300 Amen.

00:01:27.840 It is right now in the church a time of great prayer,

00:01:34.440 as much prayer in all eyes,

00:01:36.360 even non-Catholics, Christians from all over the world,

00:01:39.120 are kind of focused on Rome to see the election of a new Holy Father.

00:01:44.220 You have yourself participated in one conclave before,

00:01:48.020 but it wasn't even the last one,

00:01:49.640 because you were already over 80 at that time.

00:01:51.780 Your experience of the conclave from the inside,

00:01:57.380 in terms of what you can talk about,

00:02:00.140 tell us about that.

00:02:01.740 People can just imagine what it means

00:02:04.940 if a person sees that his vote is one of the maybe 120

00:02:12.400 that would eventually influence the choice

00:02:18.560 of a new leader of the Catholic Church.

00:02:21.120 So it is important.

00:02:22.920 It is.

00:02:23.400 And you have your own memory

00:02:26.920 that you carry with you from that time,

00:02:29.840 and therefore encourage your brothers

00:02:32.260 in the college right now who are going in.

00:02:36.620 I know you can't say exactly,

00:02:38.520 but what do you encourage them to do

00:02:41.160 in terms of prayer,

00:02:42.500 in terms of listening to the Holy Spirit?

00:02:45.040 I think a lot of people find it challenging

00:02:46.960 to listen to the Holy Spirit.

00:02:49.020 As you know,

00:02:50.300 God is the primary cause of anything good.

00:02:56.460 But God has also allowed human beings

00:03:00.760 to be secondary causes.

00:03:03.180 God could have made a table,

00:03:06.220 a bicycle, a 747 aircraft.

00:03:09.900 God could have made also a breakfast.

00:03:14.440 But He prefers to leave us creatures

00:03:17.820 the intelligence, the capacity,

00:03:21.120 and the material to work on.

00:03:23.880 We call these secondary causes,

00:03:26.460 philosophically speaking.

00:03:28.420 And God is the primary cause

00:03:29.960 because without God,

00:03:31.700 not only would we not be able to do anything,

00:03:35.180 we would not be at all.

00:03:36.960 We would not even exist.

00:03:38.120 So, to be associated with the process

00:03:43.580 of finding a new Pope is important.

00:03:47.900 And it is taken seriously.

00:03:49.840 You can see how the Catholic Church arranges

00:03:52.100 that before those maybe 120, 130 people

00:03:57.880 go into a locked-up chapel,

00:04:01.540 six times in the Vatican.

00:04:02.960 Before that, about two weeks,

00:04:05.840 between the death of the Pope

00:04:07.880 and that event,

00:04:10.320 there will be cardinals who sit each day

00:04:13.000 to reflect on what do we consider

00:04:18.520 important for the person

00:04:21.720 who is elected to know,

00:04:23.500 to do or not to do.

00:04:25.540 What is our own assessment

00:04:29.460 of the state of the Catholic Church

00:04:32.000 today and tomorrow?

00:04:35.400 The things we would desire,

00:04:37.440 the things we would regard as obstacles,

00:04:40.520 the things we would regard as promotional.

00:04:43.800 So, it is all this type of thing

00:04:45.480 that we discussed this week.

00:04:47.480 If you look at it from that point of view,

00:04:50.000 for anybody who loves the Church,

00:04:52.060 it becomes important.

00:04:53.180 And these issues, they pertain,

00:04:56.060 I would think,

00:04:57.120 mostly to the issues of the faith,

00:05:00.100 but then also to the issues

00:05:01.760 of what's going on in the world

00:05:02.980 with wars and things like that.

00:05:04.820 Because there's a lot of persecution everywhere.

00:05:06.960 I know in your own homeland,

00:05:09.240 there is this.

00:05:10.360 Does that figure into the discussion as well

00:05:12.740 in terms of,

00:05:13.700 is it a global outlook

00:05:15.080 as well as a spiritual outlook?

00:05:17.800 Pope Pius XI said,

00:05:19.440 men must look for the peace of Christ

00:05:22.720 in the kingdom of Christ.

00:05:24.880 And he urged that the faithful

00:05:26.140 give public honor to Christ the King

00:05:28.060 so that individuals and states

00:05:29.820 would submit once more

00:05:31.260 to the rule of their Savior.

00:05:33.000 And that is why

00:05:33.760 LifeSite News is raising up

00:05:35.880 the image of Christ the King

00:05:37.400 across the United States.

00:05:39.060 And you can help us reach millions more.

00:05:42.440 Please pledge your support today

00:05:43.940 for these billboards

00:05:45.660 at lifefunder.com

00:05:47.200 Every speaker had freedom

00:05:52.560 to highlight the dimension

00:05:56.460 in church life or society life

00:05:59.320 that the person thinks important,

00:06:03.420 hoping that the future hope

00:06:06.060 would be present during the discussion.

00:06:10.140 So that part of it,

00:06:12.660 you can imagine.

00:06:14.100 If you were part of it,

00:06:15.560 I'm sure you would have

00:06:17.060 some suggestions to make.

00:06:18.940 You know, you assess,

00:06:20.960 you study, you watch,

00:06:23.540 you admire,

00:06:24.740 or you lament

00:06:26.200 some happenings in society.

00:06:28.880 Some are really very good.

00:06:31.060 Some are not so good.

00:06:32.800 And some are really negative.

00:06:35.120 So it is that sort of thing

00:06:36.480 that we do for one week,

00:06:38.360 for two weeks, indeed.

00:06:41.200 It helps.

00:06:42.340 One of the things,

00:06:43.700 in your particular case,

00:06:45.540 you were elected as a bishop,

00:06:47.560 I think,

00:06:47.960 at only 32 years old.

00:06:49.800 Yes.

00:06:50.660 That's something.

00:06:52.160 So you've spent so much,

00:06:54.560 the vast majority of your life,

00:06:57.680 as a successor of the apostles.

00:07:01.320 What is that,

00:07:02.360 as you reflect back now,

00:07:03.880 because now you've reached a point

00:07:05.420 where you're beyond

00:07:07.560 two-thirds of your life

00:07:09.080 as a successor to the apostles,

00:07:10.960 as a shepherd.

00:07:12.600 What's your thoughts,

00:07:13.740 at this point,

00:07:14.380 about your life that way?

00:07:15.480 The Lord God has given me

00:07:18.120 92 years of life on this earth.

00:07:22.120 Good health is partly

00:07:25.040 so God made that person,

00:07:29.100 and partly so the doctors

00:07:31.340 and that person made that person

00:07:33.240 to be exactly like that.

00:07:35.340 Many things go into that.

00:07:36.940 And looking back,

00:07:39.460 I have only reason to thank God

00:07:42.580 and to say,

00:07:44.360 I should have behaved better than that.

00:07:47.220 Because anybody who thinks

00:07:49.360 that he or she performed best

00:07:52.440 and never made a mistake

00:07:53.800 would not be taken seriously.

00:07:56.280 One of the things that many,

00:07:58.280 I used to think a lot about,

00:08:00.480 is reaching an older age.

00:08:03.340 You'd think to yourself,

00:08:05.420 oh boy,

00:08:05.840 I better get to confession more.

00:08:07.300 But what is your life like?

00:08:09.620 Is those thoughts,

00:08:11.180 because when you approach an age

00:08:13.060 where you know the Lord is going,

00:08:14.780 you're going to meet the Lord soon,

00:08:16.500 does that increase your fervor

00:08:18.340 or want to get closer to him?

00:08:21.640 We expect a person

00:08:23.600 who comes towards the evening of life,

00:08:26.880 if I may use that expression,

00:08:28.500 to be aware

00:08:31.500 that the lifespan

00:08:33.740 will come to an end.

00:08:37.040 And for him,

00:08:37.700 sooner than for most people.

00:08:39.840 Granted,

00:08:40.620 death sometimes takes

00:08:42.680 a younger person.

00:08:44.560 But in general,

00:08:46.100 if a person is 92 years old,

00:08:48.780 that person should expect death

00:08:50.500 not very far away.

00:08:52.580 So that's normal.

00:08:54.260 It is easy to say.

00:08:55.620 It's not so easy

00:08:57.200 to act accordingly.

00:08:59.260 But it helps.

00:09:01.260 When one has reflected over years,

00:09:04.420 then what do you expect,

00:09:07.580 what do you assess as important?

00:09:10.620 And what is it you assess

00:09:12.380 as not very important,

00:09:14.320 not necessary to lament

00:09:16.340 and grieve over that?

00:09:18.700 So a person who has more years

00:09:21.320 is expected to have

00:09:22.680 a little more common sense

00:09:24.060 but younger people.

00:09:25.840 There is a lot of expectation

00:09:27.920 and joy at the election

00:09:30.280 of a Holy Father.

00:09:32.900 Do you recall that in your life?

00:09:35.980 You were there also

00:09:37.580 for the election of John Paul II,

00:09:39.900 who was, I think,

00:09:41.200 for many people today

00:09:42.920 who are like me,

00:09:44.540 the Pope of their youth,

00:09:45.760 the Pope that they really remember

00:09:47.580 because he was with us

00:09:48.540 for such a long time.

00:09:49.560 And also you grew up with,

00:09:52.840 he was the Pope that I grew up with.

00:09:54.940 Do you remember the jubilation

00:09:57.200 at that time

00:09:58.080 and any of your experiences

00:10:00.240 that you can tell us about

00:10:01.360 following his election?

00:10:03.340 Pope John Paul II,

00:10:05.520 now a saint,

00:10:06.720 was elected Pope in 1978.

00:10:10.400 At that time,

00:10:11.920 I was Archbishop of Onicha

00:10:13.700 in Nigeria.

00:10:14.680 But I had met him

00:10:17.800 at meetings in Rome,

00:10:20.500 especially Synod of Bishops

00:10:22.040 1967,

00:10:24.800 1971,

00:10:27.240 I think another,

00:10:28.120 1974.

00:10:29.960 So it was with joy

00:10:32.540 that I heard

00:10:33.460 that this Archbishop of Krakow

00:10:37.080 was elected Pope

00:10:38.780 because from

00:10:40.360 what I knew of him,

00:10:43.300 his speeches

00:10:43.880 before,

00:10:46.020 I thought

00:10:46.600 this man will put

00:10:47.820 some more order

00:10:48.800 in church life.

00:10:51.140 This man

00:10:51.660 has

00:10:52.400 clear ideas

00:10:53.900 and

00:10:54.900 has

00:10:56.060 that strength

00:10:56.980 of character.

00:10:58.380 He was also young.

00:10:59.840 He was not yet

00:11:00.600 60 years old.

00:11:01.940 But I was not in Rome

00:11:03.420 at that time.

00:11:05.420 As Archbishop of Onicha,

00:11:06.860 I had

00:11:07.280 been invited

00:11:08.600 by the bishops

00:11:09.440 of Ireland

00:11:10.340 to tour

00:11:11.800 many parts of Ireland

00:11:13.200 just to speak

00:11:14.580 on missionary work

00:11:15.980 because Ireland

00:11:17.180 has been famous

00:11:18.240 for sending

00:11:19.280 missionary priests

00:11:20.640 and sisters

00:11:21.300 and brothers

00:11:22.100 to other parts

00:11:23.200 of the world.

00:11:24.620 So it was there,

00:11:26.180 indeed,

00:11:26.760 I was there

00:11:27.540 in the north of Ireland

00:11:29.080 on the day

00:11:30.120 he was announced

00:11:31.700 and elected

00:11:33.060 and announced Pope.

00:11:34.440 So I remember

00:11:35.200 it very well.

00:11:36.040 and of course

00:11:37.000 from that time

00:11:38.460 I had the opportunity

00:11:39.720 to meet him

00:11:40.480 many times

00:11:41.620 till he called me

00:11:42.960 to roam himself.

00:11:44.160 That must be

00:11:45.360 just

00:11:45.840 something

00:11:46.900 totally incredible

00:11:48.320 when you're called on.

00:11:50.260 And in your case,

00:11:51.440 interestingly too,

00:11:52.480 you have a Polish pope

00:11:53.600 calling upon

00:11:54.580 a Nigerian bishop

00:11:55.620 to come and aid him

00:11:56.780 in the Holy See.

00:11:58.460 Tell us,

00:11:58.880 what were your feelings

00:11:59.420 at the time?

00:12:01.060 Happy.

00:12:01.580 a bit of

00:12:03.640 not knowing

00:12:05.220 what will happen

00:12:06.140 next,

00:12:06.840 the future.

00:12:08.620 But he

00:12:09.660 had been

00:12:10.700 traveling

00:12:11.620 around the world.

00:12:13.580 So I think

00:12:14.460 that

00:12:14.820 when he met

00:12:16.680 some bishops,

00:12:18.140 he had the opportunity

00:12:19.460 to assess

00:12:20.580 the type

00:12:21.540 that he would

00:12:22.680 want

00:12:23.700 in one of the offices

00:12:24.780 in the Vatican.

00:12:25.900 actually

00:12:27.160 where I was

00:12:28.020 assigned

00:12:28.560 was the

00:12:29.740 Pontifical Council

00:12:31.480 for Interreligious Dialogue,

00:12:33.780 the office

00:12:34.460 of the Catholic Church

00:12:35.600 for contact

00:12:37.460 between Christians,

00:12:40.340 between Catholics 0.98

00:12:41.180 and other religions

00:12:43.520 except the Jews 0.93

00:12:45.500 because with the Jews, 0.98

00:12:47.480 with special relationship

00:12:48.620 with Judaism,

00:12:50.060 it is in a separate office

00:12:51.660 in the Vatican.

00:12:52.640 but all the others,

00:12:54.620 Islam,

00:12:56.060 Hinduism,

00:12:57.940 Buddhism, 0.94

00:12:59.400 traditional religions

00:13:00.500 like in Nigeria 0.71

00:13:01.940 or in Australia

00:13:03.220 or even in the United States

00:13:05.220 or Canada.

00:13:06.860 So,

00:13:07.440 it was wonderful

00:13:08.800 for me.

00:13:09.740 It was like

00:13:10.600 a bigger world

00:13:11.680 opened

00:13:12.440 before me

00:13:13.600 and I had

00:13:15.080 much to learn,

00:13:16.960 travels

00:13:17.380 to make,

00:13:18.740 contacts

00:13:19.220 to make,

00:13:20.840 speeches

00:13:21.160 to arrange.

00:13:23.240 One of the things

00:13:23.880 with the

00:13:24.440 interreligious dialogue,

00:13:26.020 I think

00:13:26.260 as different

00:13:28.380 from ecumenism,

00:13:29.780 it's a movement

00:13:31.680 to work together

00:13:32.620 toward peace

00:13:33.460 and world goals,

00:13:35.020 but it doesn't

00:13:36.120 preclude

00:13:36.920 evangelizing.

00:13:38.660 It doesn't preclude,

00:13:40.040 especially like

00:13:40.760 in Nigeria,

00:13:41.680 in India,

00:13:42.580 a lot of places

00:13:43.340 that right now

00:13:44.360 are,

00:13:45.020 they restrict

00:13:45.780 kind of evangelization.

00:13:47.140 They call it,

00:13:48.320 at least in India,

00:13:49.300 forced conversions,

00:13:51.540 which of course

00:13:52.000 it's not,

00:13:53.080 but

00:13:53.300 how do you

00:13:55.080 explain the difference

00:13:55.980 then between

00:13:56.500 this kind of

00:13:57.260 interreligious dialogue

00:13:58.300 but yet

00:13:59.340 the want

00:14:00.940 of the church

00:14:01.440 to bring

00:14:01.960 the truth

00:14:02.340 of Jesus Christ

00:14:02.920 to everyone?

00:14:03.880 Yes.

00:14:04.500 There are various

00:14:05.540 activities

00:14:06.180 of the church,

00:14:07.820 the same church.

00:14:09.740 You mentioned

00:14:10.740 ecumenism

00:14:11.400 in the beginning.

00:14:12.400 That would mean

00:14:13.660 contact

00:14:14.740 between Catholics 0.98

00:14:15.800 and other Christians

00:14:17.800 with a view

00:14:20.240 to return

00:14:22.160 of communities

00:14:25.560 of Christians

00:14:26.340 to unity

00:14:27.420 of church

00:14:28.760 because Christ

00:14:29.940 instituted

00:14:30.700 one church,

00:14:32.000 one pope,

00:14:33.700 but it is

00:14:35.560 human force

00:14:37.200 that caused 0.77

00:14:38.700 division

00:14:39.320 between Christians.

00:14:41.660 That's interreligious, 1.00

00:14:43.520 that's ecumenism.

00:14:45.100 totally different

00:14:47.300 is interreligious

00:14:48.700 dialogue.

00:14:50.240 Interreligious

00:14:50.880 dialogue,

00:14:51.680 that's where I

00:14:52.540 worked for

00:14:53.360 18 years,

00:14:54.760 is the Catholics

00:14:55.660 meeting people

00:14:57.740 of other religions

00:14:58.860 to listen

00:14:59.860 to them,

00:15:00.920 to try to

00:15:01.860 understand them,

00:15:03.340 to see what

00:15:04.380 we can share,

00:15:05.860 what we can do

00:15:06.860 together,

00:15:07.760 what we can say

00:15:08.840 together,

00:15:09.720 what we can make

00:15:11.000 together.

00:15:11.560 and we hope

00:15:13.200 that they also

00:15:14.460 will be willing

00:15:15.160 to understand

00:15:17.640 us more,

00:15:18.940 see what we

00:15:19.580 can do together

00:15:20.500 and what we

00:15:21.660 can build

00:15:22.160 together.

00:15:22.960 If both sides

00:15:24.120 are so inclined,

00:15:26.720 the result

00:15:27.220 will be good

00:15:27.920 for humanity.

00:15:28.960 You mentioned

00:15:30.080 evangelization.

00:15:31.540 Oh yes,

00:15:32.560 because Christ

00:15:33.680 instituted the

00:15:34.760 church to share

00:15:35.860 the good news

00:15:36.580 of salvation

00:15:37.340 in Jesus Christ

00:15:38.780 with everyone.

00:15:40.540 The church

00:15:41.000 offers this

00:15:42.480 opportunity.

00:15:43.980 The church

00:15:44.360 is meant

00:15:45.000 to offer it,

00:15:46.600 to bring it

00:15:47.480 to people,

00:15:48.780 but to propose,

00:15:51.140 not to impose,

00:15:52.860 which means

00:15:53.480 we are not

00:15:54.980 expected

00:15:55.760 to force

00:15:57.520 anyone

00:15:58.300 to become

00:15:59.220 a Christian

00:15:59.820 or to

00:16:00.900 maneuver

00:16:01.320 the person

00:16:02.060 or to

00:16:02.760 cheat

00:16:03.220 the person

00:16:03.860 or to say,

00:16:05.240 if you become

00:16:05.740 a Catholic, 0.99

00:16:06.500 I will pay

00:16:07.180 your school fees.

00:16:08.140 that would

00:16:09.100 be wrong.

00:16:09.700 We call that

00:16:10.360 proselytism.

00:16:11.780 If you become

00:16:12.580 a Catholic,

00:16:13.520 we will arrange

00:16:14.500 your promotion

00:16:15.180 in the office

00:16:16.700 where you are

00:16:17.240 working.

00:16:17.920 That would

00:16:18.560 not be proper.

00:16:20.200 But if

00:16:21.400 a person

00:16:22.380 is not

00:16:23.260 a Christian

00:16:23.800 and the

00:16:25.860 person

00:16:26.220 not only

00:16:27.160 wants to

00:16:27.680 be friendly

00:16:28.320 with me,

00:16:29.340 but is also

00:16:30.240 ready to

00:16:31.220 understand

00:16:31.960 what we

00:16:33.960 pray,

00:16:34.900 what we

00:16:35.460 Catholics

00:16:35.860 believe,

00:16:36.520 and if

00:16:37.680 the person

00:16:38.200 wants

00:16:38.740 to share

00:16:39.540 part of

00:16:40.040 it,

00:16:40.700 we do

00:16:41.380 share it

00:16:42.500 and it

00:16:43.460 becomes

00:16:43.840 our

00:16:44.140 duty.

00:16:45.700 That is

00:16:46.340 the height.

00:16:47.740 When we say

00:16:48.420 catechesis,

00:16:49.680 it is a sharing

00:16:50.840 of our faith,

00:16:52.740 what we believe,

00:16:53.900 what we do,

00:16:55.040 what we don't

00:16:55.640 do,

00:16:56.480 the code that

00:16:57.260 guides our life,

00:16:58.580 the meaning

00:16:59.160 that we see

00:17:00.400 in life.

00:17:01.020 but we

00:17:02.380 share it

00:17:03.000 freely.

00:17:04.680 We regard

00:17:05.220 therefore

00:17:05.740 freedom of

00:17:06.880 religion

00:17:07.380 as very

00:17:08.460 important,

00:17:09.520 as one of

00:17:10.180 the fundamental

00:17:10.900 rights of

00:17:12.100 a human

00:17:12.520 person.

00:17:13.280 There should

00:17:13.640 be no

00:17:14.040 force on

00:17:15.040 anyone.

00:17:16.120 It matters

00:17:16.740 religious.

00:17:18.520 So that

00:17:18.900 it doesn't

00:17:19.920 mean that

00:17:21.180 you can

00:17:22.580 believe anything

00:17:23.520 you like,

00:17:24.940 but it

00:17:25.540 means that

00:17:26.240 we shall

00:17:27.340 not use

00:17:28.080 force or

00:17:29.760 cheating to

00:17:31.260 maneuver a

00:17:32.180 person to

00:17:33.260 share our

00:17:33.960 faith.

00:17:34.720 We propose

00:17:35.480 it honestly.

00:17:37.700 If another

00:17:38.560 person accepts

00:17:39.460 it, that

00:17:40.520 is right.

00:17:41.480 In that

00:17:41.980 case, then,

00:17:42.900 we do

00:17:43.340 catechesis

00:17:44.180 and not

00:17:45.040 interreligious

00:17:46.260 dialogue.

00:17:47.440 But if

00:17:48.040 another person

00:17:48.760 says, I

00:17:49.340 am a

00:17:49.700 Muslim, I 0.70

00:17:50.820 don't want 0.96

00:17:51.500 to be a

00:17:51.960 Christian,

00:17:53.420 we Christians

00:17:54.020 should not

00:17:54.540 say, in

00:17:55.140 that case,

00:17:55.920 we have

00:17:56.400 nothing to

00:17:56.980 do with

00:17:57.440 you.

00:17:58.060 No, no,

00:17:58.400 that would

00:17:58.760 be wrong

00:17:59.180 because that

00:18:00.400 person is a

00:18:01.100 human being.

00:18:02.100 We share

00:18:02.520 human nature

00:18:03.140 together.

00:18:04.160 The same

00:18:04.660 God created

00:18:05.360 all of us.

00:18:06.740 And also,

00:18:07.640 the same

00:18:07.960 Christ died

00:18:09.100 for all of

00:18:09.860 us on

00:18:10.400 the cross,

00:18:11.300 even for

00:18:12.120 those who

00:18:12.580 don't know

00:18:13.220 about him,

00:18:14.440 or even

00:18:14.980 those who

00:18:15.520 were opposing

00:18:16.220 him or

00:18:17.060 crucifying him. 0.99

00:18:17.980 He died

00:18:18.340 for them

00:18:18.740 all.

00:18:19.620 So, in

00:18:20.220 his name,

00:18:21.300 we should

00:18:21.740 propagate this

00:18:22.680 faith.

00:18:23.760 Even when

00:18:24.700 the other

00:18:25.060 do not

00:18:25.560 understand us

00:18:26.540 or impute

00:18:28.200 improper

00:18:29.240 motives

00:18:29.840 to us.

00:18:31.980 So, you

00:18:32.520 can see

00:18:33.140 that

00:18:33.980 interreligious

00:18:35.200 contact

00:18:36.180 is for

00:18:37.980 promotion

00:18:38.500 of working

00:18:40.040 together.

00:18:41.100 Depending on

00:18:41.780 the reaction

00:18:42.500 of the

00:18:42.920 individuals,

00:18:44.000 if the

00:18:44.360 other person

00:18:45.080 thereby

00:18:46.040 understands

00:18:46.900 us more

00:18:47.540 and now

00:18:48.500 decides to

00:18:51.000 share our

00:18:52.140 faith,

00:18:52.800 we are happy

00:18:53.360 about it,

00:18:54.080 of course.

00:18:54.600 Protecting

00:18:56.520 your money

00:18:56.860 doesn't have

00:18:57.360 to be

00:18:57.640 complicated.

00:18:58.520 With stocks,

00:18:59.320 bonds,

00:18:59.680 and crypto,

00:19:00.340 it's easy

00:19:00.900 to feel

00:19:01.380 lost.

00:19:02.120 The gold

00:19:02.500 and silver

00:19:02.920 have been

00:19:03.280 trusted for

00:19:03.940 centuries as

00:19:04.600 a simple,

00:19:05.580 stable store

00:19:06.220 of value

00:19:06.680 in uncertain

00:19:07.320 times.

00:19:08.380 If you

00:19:08.600 had invested

00:19:09.060 $35,000 in

00:19:10.600 gold at the

00:19:11.100 millennium,

00:19:11.720 an amount

00:19:12.080 you can give

00:19:12.620 today tax-free

00:19:13.600 to anyone

00:19:14.120 you love,

00:19:14.920 it would

00:19:15.200 have grown

00:19:15.540 to be worth

00:19:16.000 over $325,000.

00:19:18.460 Call our

00:19:19.140 team at

00:19:19.560 610-326-2000

00:19:21.840 and let us

00:19:22.700 step you through

00:19:23.220 crafting a

00:19:23.820 solution.

00:19:24.600 for your

00:19:24.920 family.

00:19:27.260 We are

00:19:28.080 actually at

00:19:28.680 the 10-year

00:19:29.800 anniversary

00:19:30.420 of the

00:19:32.180 martyrs in

00:19:33.620 Egypt,

00:19:34.160 the Egyptians,

00:19:35.060 they were

00:19:35.360 marched out

00:19:36.400 onto the

00:19:37.240 beach,

00:19:37.640 if you recall,

00:19:38.800 and had

00:19:39.520 their heads 1.00

00:19:40.240 cut off. 0.99

00:19:41.340 But also,

00:19:43.080 even today,

00:19:44.000 in your own

00:19:44.760 homeland,

00:19:45.320 there are

00:19:45.660 martyrs who

00:19:46.780 are trying

00:19:47.760 to live

00:19:48.120 their faith,

00:19:49.160 but they're

00:19:49.760 being persecuted.

00:19:51.740 This century,

00:19:53.220 even these

00:19:54.820 decades are

00:19:55.440 called some

00:19:56.020 of the

00:19:56.500 decades with

00:19:57.220 the most

00:19:57.700 martyrs who've

00:19:58.480 ever lived.

00:19:59.620 Yet,

00:20:00.040 in the West,

00:20:00.740 we don't

00:20:01.080 really see

00:20:01.740 much of

00:20:02.340 that.

00:20:04.100 When you're

00:20:04.840 in the

00:20:05.240 Vatican,

00:20:06.320 do you get

00:20:07.280 to learn of it

00:20:07.960 more than

00:20:08.640 perhaps the rest

00:20:09.680 of the world?

00:20:10.320 And I'd love

00:20:10.840 to hear your

00:20:11.260 thoughts,

00:20:11.540 especially of

00:20:12.920 those situations

00:20:14.200 that you've

00:20:14.640 heard of.

00:20:15.060 Well, in a

00:20:16.300 way, Rome

00:20:17.460 is like a

00:20:18.500 center.

00:20:19.780 So,

00:20:20.100 information

00:20:20.660 arrives.

00:20:22.480 And if the

00:20:23.140 individual takes

00:20:24.120 enough trouble

00:20:25.340 to make

00:20:26.380 contact with

00:20:27.440 sources of

00:20:28.040 information,

00:20:29.180 the person

00:20:29.560 will know

00:20:30.160 what is

00:20:30.920 happening in

00:20:31.480 other parts

00:20:32.000 of the world.

00:20:33.140 There are

00:20:33.580 some countries

00:20:34.720 where to be

00:20:35.960 a Christian

00:20:36.500 is to be

00:20:39.040 in danger

00:20:39.740 of being

00:20:40.960 deprived of

00:20:41.760 some of the

00:20:42.360 person's rights

00:20:43.280 or even

00:20:44.740 of being

00:20:45.460 persecuted,

00:20:46.760 of not

00:20:47.380 getting what

00:20:48.020 the person

00:20:48.480 has a right

00:20:49.160 to get,

00:20:50.200 and sometimes

00:20:51.100 of life

00:20:51.720 itself.

00:20:53.160 A martyr,

00:20:54.760 in our

00:20:55.280 understanding,

00:20:56.460 is a person

00:20:57.080 who is

00:20:58.560 killed for

00:20:59.580 the sake

00:21:00.120 of the

00:21:00.560 Christian

00:21:00.940 faith.

00:21:01.920 Nobody wants

00:21:02.620 to be killed, 0.80

00:21:03.860 but when a 0.74

00:21:04.640 person esteems

00:21:05.480 the faith as

00:21:06.600 more precious

00:21:07.300 than human

00:21:08.240 life, that

00:21:09.480 is the

00:21:10.540 quality of

00:21:11.460 a martyr.

00:21:11.960 and it

00:21:13.320 can happen

00:21:13.920 because some

00:21:15.460 people get

00:21:16.720 persecuted

00:21:17.260 because of

00:21:18.340 what they

00:21:18.820 believe,

00:21:19.800 because of

00:21:20.360 how they

00:21:20.820 live.

00:21:21.780 From the

00:21:22.360 early days,

00:21:23.680 you remember

00:21:24.960 St. Stephen

00:21:26.000 in the Acts

00:21:26.920 of the

00:21:27.260 Apostles,

00:21:28.520 and indeed

00:21:30.000 the apostles,

00:21:31.060 almost all

00:21:31.800 of them,

00:21:32.240 11 of them,

00:21:33.500 because they

00:21:34.200 believed in

00:21:34.780 Christ.

00:21:35.720 They were

00:21:36.040 first punished,

00:21:37.340 they were

00:21:37.680 threatened,

00:21:38.780 and finally

00:21:39.460 some were

00:21:39.980 killed.

00:21:40.340 That has

00:21:41.620 continued up

00:21:42.460 to our

00:21:42.800 time.

00:21:43.700 It has

00:21:44.060 not ceased.

00:21:45.240 So while

00:21:45.780 we have

00:21:46.220 St. Maria

00:21:47.100 Goretti in

00:21:48.200 Italy, we

00:21:49.120 have also

00:21:49.760 our own

00:21:50.640 Maria Gorettis

00:21:51.480 in Nigeria,

00:21:52.800 and we

00:21:53.220 have also

00:21:53.700 Christians who 0.54

00:21:55.020 are deprived

00:21:56.080 of their

00:21:56.580 rights, like

00:21:57.940 in the early

00:21:58.880 church, you

00:21:59.840 think of

00:22:00.340 St.

00:22:00.760 Sebastian,

00:22:01.820 you think

00:22:02.400 of St.

00:22:03.000 Lawrence

00:22:03.440 the martyr,

00:22:04.660 you think

00:22:05.040 of the early

00:22:05.700 popes, when

00:22:06.680 to be a

00:22:07.180 pope was to

00:22:08.100 be a candidate

00:22:08.820 for martyrdom.

00:22:10.400 So we

00:22:11.400 have some

00:22:12.420 problems.

00:22:13.740 Some people

00:22:14.880 in persecuting

00:22:15.860 Christians 0.81

00:22:16.580 camouflage their

00:22:18.540 action under

00:22:19.720 another title.

00:22:21.100 It may look

00:22:21.720 like a

00:22:22.640 quarrel between

00:22:23.600 landowners and

00:22:26.160 those who have

00:22:26.920 cattle that

00:22:28.420 destroyed their

00:22:29.460 crops.

00:22:30.340 It looks

00:22:31.040 simply like

00:22:31.800 that, but it

00:22:32.780 might be deeper

00:22:33.520 than that.

00:22:35.360 Situations

00:22:36.040 differ.

00:22:36.820 Nevertheless,

00:22:38.660 what is

00:22:39.080 true is

00:22:40.080 that some

00:22:40.520 people actually

00:22:41.260 get punished

00:22:42.160 because of 0.69

00:22:43.120 Christianity,

00:22:44.060 and some

00:22:44.520 actually get

00:22:45.240 killed today, 0.86

00:22:47.000 in some

00:22:48.080 countries more

00:22:49.060 than in

00:22:49.560 others.

00:22:50.340 Eminence, I

00:22:50.940 want to thank

00:22:51.380 you for your

00:22:51.800 time.

00:22:53.000 spent a long

00:22:53.760 time with us.

00:22:54.340 I would just

00:22:54.760 ask if you

00:22:55.340 would, many

00:22:56.440 many people

00:22:56.920 would very

00:22:57.560 much appreciate

00:22:58.280 your blessing.

00:22:59.500 May the

00:22:59.820 name of the

00:23:00.380 Lord be

00:23:00.780 blessed now

00:23:01.740 and forever.

00:23:02.680 Our help

00:23:03.140 is in the

00:23:03.540 name of the

00:23:04.120 Lord who

00:23:04.540 made heaven.

00:23:05.180 May the

00:23:05.780 blessing of

00:23:06.340 Almighty God,

00:23:07.680 Father, Son,

00:23:09.640 and Holy Spirit

00:23:10.520 descend on

00:23:11.300 you, all of

00:23:12.480 you who

00:23:12.840 listen, do

00:23:13.560 watch, and

00:23:14.580 remain with

00:23:15.060 you forever.

00:23:16.080 Amen.

00:23:17.240 Amen.

00:23:17.860 Thank you so

00:23:18.420 much, Eminence.

00:23:19.020 God bless you.

00:23:19.620 Thank you.
