00:01:14.060 This is really revolutionary what's going on. The Olympics are being held in a country right now

00:01:19.700 that is rife with human rights abuses. You are very well versed in what's going on. You told me

00:01:27.180 something totally fascinating right before we went on air, and that was about Chinese families,

00:01:34.060 freedom fighters, if you will, for China's freedom. In California, their families getting threatened

00:01:39.240 back in China. Please tell us what's happening right now.

00:01:41.480 I actually talked to several of my friends just in the last few days.

00:01:45.840 What happened is they all say that their families in China right now are receiving phone calls

00:01:53.800 from the CCP, Chinese Communist Party, and warn them and have them send a message to all these 0.98

00:02:02.220 freedom fighters or pro-democracy activists outside of China. It's a message to ask them not to do

00:02:11.740 anything, because otherwise, you know, they say, they kind of like threaten, you know, their family.

00:02:18.880 And it's which is actually a typical thing for the CCP to do, usually prior to the major national

00:02:25.740 activities, such as Olympic or major national holidays. The National Security Department,

00:02:34.620 they will call either the family members of the human rights fighters outside of China. In this case,

00:02:42.080 the few of them that I talked to was in California. Also, they will also call the human rights

00:02:49.240 activists inside China and say, let's drink tea together. It's kind of like it sounds very nice,

00:02:55.520 right? We'll drink tea together. But in China, that's among the human rights fighters or pro-democracy

00:03:02.980 activists. Somebody mentioned that he or she was asked by the National Security Department to have

00:03:11.240 tea together. People know what it means. For Western ears, that's, you know, stuff out of a novel,

00:03:16.920 a kind of mafia type of scenario. But that's actually happening currently in the very country

00:03:24.580 where the Olympics are being held. It's absolutely unbelievable. If you wouldn't mind, then, if you can

00:03:31.140 unpack some of your own history with your country and how you got involved yourself in the fight for

00:03:38.840 freedom. Oh, yeah. I came to the United States in 1989, just January of 1989, just five months before

00:03:46.600 the Tiananmen Square massacre. And I was here in the United States in California. I watched the whole

00:03:53.300 thing unfolded on Tiananmen Square, which turned my entire mentality upside down, basically.

00:04:01.500 Where were that? Because I was brainwashed when I was in China, right? So only five months after I

00:04:10.100 left the country, I saw this, you know, bloody massacre took place in Tiananmen Square. And actually,

00:04:18.680 another story was at that time, 1989, I was here in graduate school. And while my brother was actually

00:04:26.480 in China, he joined the protest. And he was one of the he was a university students in one of the

00:04:35.620 major cities in China. Now he actually made intent trying to make a speech. Now, he walked on the stage,

00:04:44.460 and he only right after he started the microphone, the sound system broke. So he couldn't actually

00:04:53.540 made any speeches. So otherwise, he would have been in jail. So so that's that's what happened. I came

00:05:01.280 here in 1989. And then I started working to promote human rights and democracy for societies in China

00:05:10.360 China since 2001. And and ever since I've been working on this, I started working for Epoch Times.

00:05:19.820 I started working for Epoch Times, and Son of Hope, and several other media related in this field,

00:05:27.940 since 2003.

00:05:29.060 This is unbelievable, because I think a lot of people just are very unaware of what China is doing,

00:05:35.940 what the background is, how it figures into geopolitics. One of the really astonishing articles

00:05:44.180 that I've read of yours in the Epoch Times was this commentary and analysis of what's going on

00:05:51.320 with the Russia Ukraine boil up right now and how China plays a part in that and how that they could

00:05:58.440 be affected by that. Please tell us about that.

00:06:00.640 Yeah, if you look at China has done something really strange in the last months after the Ukraine

00:06:07.680 crisis to start unfolding. Right. January 23rd, they send 39 warplanes, military warplanes

00:06:19.920 approaching Taiwan. And also North Korea had a total seven missile tests in last month, January.

00:06:27.760 That's basically all these provocative activities took place just one month prior to Beijing Olympic.

00:06:36.400 This is very unusual, because, you know, what Xi Jinping and Kim Jong-un trying to send a message

00:06:44.240 to Putin is they gave him support. They have his back. Now, what China in years have been hoping

00:06:55.200 that Putin will join China's camp and become a second man position helping Xi Jinping on China's global

00:07:04.960 expansion program. Now, think about if you compare the level of threat from Russia and from China,

00:07:12.960 it's it's totally different. Nowadays, Russia's economy is just one tenth of China. China has China's have two 0.65

00:07:22.400 provinces. Each of these single two provinces GDP, provincial GDP. It's more than Russia's national

00:07:30.160 GDP. So if the opposition in Ukraine really started escalating between and then the opposition between the

00:07:41.120 the West and Russia and Russia really escalated, then Putin will have no other choice. They will. He has

00:07:48.880 to make the entire economy of Russia rely on China, which for China, for Xi Jinping, that's a one big step

00:07:56.800 forward to bring Russia to join China's camp. But right now, Putin has not made his mind yet because Russia is

00:08:06.400 still a country with a proud history and rich culture and they have their own proud. They may not want to

00:08:16.480 listen to Xi Jinping. But, you know, but if this opposition really unfolded in Ukraine and Putin may,

00:08:24.880 you know, that both sides of Putin and the West may just play into the hands of Xi Jinping.

00:08:30.080 And with the current leadership in the United States, that brings in another element that I might ask

00:08:35.520 you about. With President Joe Biden being tied into China, the Communist Party in China through the

00:08:43.760 dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, how do you figure that's playing into this situation with the Ukraine

00:08:50.720 and Russia as well? It's hard to say because we don't have the details of how the negotiation going on

00:08:57.680 between NATO and Russia and between the United States and Russia. We don't have any information.

00:09:03.920 And we don't know. We know. We only know that everyone says Russia asked too high. The price

00:09:13.040 Putin asked is too high. We don't know how high the price is. But, you know, you can see if the Ukraine

00:09:20.720 crisis escalated over there, then both NATO and the entire Western world and Russia have no room to 0.52

00:09:31.040 back off because that's basically what Beijing really want to see. It's your firm conviction that

00:09:37.040 China is planning sort of on world domination. And so this is very interesting. But one of the elements 0.98

00:09:44.160 in this that is really I thought rather revealing is you mentioned in one of your articles that

00:09:52.400 the Communist Party of China has spent billions, that's billions with a B, billions of dollars into

00:09:59.760 getting university students into California. Can you explain that to them, what the connection is there?

00:10:05.600 Oh, yeah. If you look at the history, you know, just look at the fiscal year for 2000 and 2001,

00:10:15.520 you actually, the University of California have a total 10 campers in California, right? Now,

00:10:23.360 in the 10 campers, actually 9% of students were from China. I mean, actually, they are the foreign

00:10:32.800 students from China. It's a total 9% of the total students studying in UC California. And actually,

00:10:42.000 in that school year to 2000 to 2021, that the University of California accepted more foreign students

00:10:51.920 than the total number of foreign students from the rest of the world.

00:10:55.920 So that's what happened. Now, and a lot of those students, they came to University of California to study

00:11:05.840 paid by Chinese government. And UC has this long relationship. Ever since 2005, 2006, they built this

00:11:15.200 relationship with UC California. They paid really billions to University of California.

00:11:22.720 California. And California actually, you know, UC Berkeley, they're really the top campus of the 10

00:11:31.440 campus of the UC system. They actually went to China, went to the city of Shenzhen. That's the city right next

00:11:38.880 to Hong Kong. They built this research institute to help Chinese students to learn all the advanced

00:11:48.720 technologies like data science, information, new energy, precision medicine. It's all the latest advantage

00:12:00.800 technology that, you know, so we don't, you know, China, Chinese government don't even have to send their

00:12:08.400 students to come to United States to study. We bring our latest technology to China to teach them how to do it.

00:12:15.680 That's what happened. That's the quick poke pro going on.

00:12:18.640 The world, which in the West anyway, prides itself on saying that they fight all human rights abuses and

00:12:25.360 basically they're ending them, is confronted with China, which is doing a genocidal thing against the 0.96

00:12:33.200 Uyghurs, as we know, but also starting to crack down even in Hong Kong, Taiwan. Can you tell us a bit about

00:12:39.280 that? What's going on now in Hong Kong that was supposed to be allowed to retain its freedom?

00:12:44.400 The so-called one country, two political systems are entirely gone now. There's no such a thing.

00:12:50.880 Hong Kong right now, it's no different than any other city inside of China. It's the same. So I'm not

00:12:59.040 sure if you people, if people heard about how the election going on last year. See, Chinese government had 0.62

00:13:08.160 this election for the Hong Kong legislature last year. It took place in December. Now, what happened is,

00:13:19.760 at the beginning of the year, in the beginning of the year, I think it's January of last year,

00:13:26.800 they pretty much arrested all the pro-democracy candidates. They arrested all of them. So that's

00:13:34.560 why in December, when the legislation, the election finished, you know, they have a total of 90 members

00:13:43.520 in the Legislative Council, 100 percent controlled by China. There was only one, you know, they say there

00:13:51.360 was one, it's probably slightly leading towards to pro-democracy. At least 89 of them, it's totally,

00:14:00.320 you know, the candidate legislative members Beijing chose, basically.

00:14:06.000 I'm afraid we might be giving President Biden new ideas on how to do fraud in elections. But if you

00:14:13.440 were to lay out what you really believe China's sort of future plan is with regard to influencing the rest

00:14:21.840 of the world, what do you see as its future plan for rollout for what it wants to do?

00:14:27.200 China's economy has been enjoying the economic growth through basically construction, right?

00:14:33.120 The real estate, it's really booming in the last 20 years. I think everybody remember in September of

00:14:41.600 last year, one day, because China's real estate, the biggest one developer, Evergrande, right,

00:14:49.600 because they're, they're going to default their debt. So, you know, at one point, it sent the

00:14:55.280 Dow Dow industry index down more than 900 points, right, when the news broke. So what Chinese government

00:15:04.000 trying to do is they send their construction companies overseas to continue that way to continue

00:15:13.120 their economic growth. So that's called belts and roads project. So basically, the Chinese 0.82

00:15:20.800 construction company will bring their own equipment, their own workers, their own money,

00:15:25.840 they will go to wherever the country needs them, they will build their bridges, roads, airports for you,

00:15:31.840 and then they will leave, and they will leave you a huge debt for you to, to pay back. Now, so, but that, that, that, that,

00:15:40.400 that was originally designed to solve their overcapacity problem in China. But now it becomes a major

00:15:48.800 way for the CCP to infiltrate the developing countries. Now, what happened is, as China refused

00:15:56.960 to continue any kind of political reform, now the opposition between China and the West, and, you know,

00:16:04.880 every day is escalating. It's, you know, it's the opposition, it's bigger and bigger. So the Chinese 1.00

00:16:11.520 Communist Party kind of like already figured out they are one step ahead of us. They already figured out

00:16:17.840 that in the next 30 years, their economic growth will not be able to count on the support from the,

00:16:24.880 from the Western world for the technology, for the investment, as well as the consumer market.

00:16:30.880 So they're kind of like going around the world, they're trying to build their own global system

00:16:36.560 outside of the Western world. That's what they are doing. That's kind of like a, a similar system,

00:16:43.360 similar to how Soviet Union controlled the Warsaw Pact in the olden days during the Cold War time.

00:16:48.880 But this is a different, China trying to control all these countries by economic infiltration.

00:16:56.080 And then what they trying to do is they will build their information, like internet system for these

00:17:02.160 countries. Like China already done that for the North Korea. So in China's technologies got a backdoor.

00:17:08.320 So once you, you, you kind of like, once you adopt their system, there's no secret, you know,

00:17:14.640 to the CCP anymore. So they will watch their allies a lot more efficient and effective than how Soviet 0.92

00:17:22.880 Union using KGB to watch their allies. So that's the kind of the, the, the system they try to build,

00:17:29.920 you know, so China right now, the Southeast Asian countries, the association, there was 10 countries

00:17:35.760 in the Southeast Asian countries. That 10 countries, the biggest trading partner of China, topping the EU,

00:17:45.600 as well as the United States. And also China's Belt and Road project has been in South American countries,

00:17:52.800 and also Africa countries, Central Asia countries. So those are really the focus of their global

00:18:01.200 expansion.

00:18:01.760 If you could tell us, we've heard a lot about persecution against Catholics, against Uyghurs

00:18:06.720 and Christians and all sorts of religious groups in China. Yet at the same time is a very strange

00:18:11.920 phenomenon going on, at least with regard to the Catholic Church. And that is a kind of seeming

00:18:16.080 cooperation and of the Vatican with the Chinese Communist Party in allowing for the, you know,

00:18:26.240 patriotic Catholic Church, the bringing out of the underground church that was there. Can you unpack 0.89

00:18:31.520 that a little bit for us? Yeah, the Catholic Church in China has been, has been able to legally operate

00:18:38.800 in China, not like the Christian churches. Now, the reason for that is Beijing basically say, okay,

00:18:48.080 you guys can legally run your Catholic Church, but however, the bishops and all the priests in the

00:18:55.280 church need to be appointed by Chinese Communist Party. So over the years, that's how things have been,

00:19:01.200 you know, the way is how things work in China. Now, Vatican trying to get involved in this process,

00:19:09.440 now I don't think they're getting anywhere because even right now, the proposal on the table in the

00:19:16.640 negotiation between Vatican and China, it's like China say, they will nominate all the candidates

00:19:23.680 for the, you know, bishop in China. And Vatican basically only have the right to say yes, right?

00:19:30.720 So you don't like one, they will replace the next one still the one you don't like. That's what's going

00:19:37.360 on. Besides the Catholic Church now, like Christian Church, they were there being, you know, you see,

00:19:45.600 you just Google it, you'll find the tens of thousands of pictures, all this Chinese government sent this

00:19:53.280 construction equipment, just demolish all these churches building the villages.

00:19:58.080 And also, same issue for Uyghurs. It's an issue for religious freedom. Tibetans, Falun Gong, 0.96

00:20:07.440 there are all the, you know, issues, religious freedom. See, Chinese government want Chinese 1.00

00:20:14.080 people blindly follow their leadership. And so that's why they don't want you to have your own

00:20:20.320 faith. They don't want you to have your own value system. And that's the only way they, you know,

00:20:26.560 they can make sure that you blindly all the people in China will blindly follow the leadership of the

00:20:32.240 Chinese Communist Party. If you were to with the background and your knowledge of Chinese, the way

00:20:37.280 the Communist Party operates, what would be your advice if you were advising the Vatican or some other

00:20:44.560 religious body on how to deal with the Chinese Communist Party? What would be your advice to them?

00:20:50.480 Support all the religious freedom fight in China. You know, there's a lot of people fighting for

00:20:56.800 religious freedom in China. You know, if you're concerned about any, you know, it doesn't matter,

00:21:05.600 Catholicism, Christianity, Tibetan Buddhism, Uyghur, and Falun Gong. It doesn't really matter. Support

00:21:15.040 all the fights for religious freedom in China. Well, Nansu, thank you so much for being with us.

00:21:20.400 What is your message to the world that has supported the Olympics being in China, especially to the Olympic

00:21:27.760 Committee that has agreed to and now is allowing China to host this international gathering of
