00:05:08.460 that is not in the rest of the world,
00:05:10.880 is the Ugandan martyrs.
00:05:14.320 And there is a particular relevance of the Ugandan martyrs
00:05:18.260 on this very question.
00:05:21.100 And are we right in supposing that some of the strength
00:05:24.920 of the church here, and even of society here,
00:05:28.480 is because of the Ugandan martyrs?
00:05:30.180 Hmm.
00:05:32.900 Well, I will say that we are blessed,
00:05:38.280 that at the beginning of the evangelization in Uganda,
00:05:44.500 the missionaries found courageous young men,
00:05:48.300 young men,
00:05:50.720 who, I think, guided by the Holy Spirit,
00:05:54.740 were able, within a very short time,
00:05:57.520 to embrace the way of Jesus Christ,
00:05:59.940 to follow the Jewish,
00:06:01.260 and to learn, and to study,
00:06:02.740 and to be convinced about Catholicism,
00:06:07.120 and about the Bible.
00:06:09.740 And I don't know how mysteriously God made it,
00:06:14.380 that without even going to learn the language
00:06:18.860 of the missionaries,
00:06:20.780 the missionaries were able to quickly learn,
00:06:23.680 and be able to teach catechism,
00:06:25.180 and convince these young men,
00:06:28.080 to the point of deciding to die for Jesus Christ.
00:06:32.860 That was, that is, I think,
00:06:34.980 that is the best miracle that we received during that time.
00:06:39.300 And these men were taught what is right,
00:06:44.900 the commandments,
00:06:45.680 to give up things,
00:06:48.560 the behaviors that the people of Uganda,
00:06:53.020 of Uganda appreciated at the time,
00:06:55.680 what they thought it was good for them.
00:06:58.080 things like polygamy.
00:07:02.220 Polygamy, even up to now,
00:07:04.020 some of the people still,
00:07:06.420 have more than one wife.
00:07:11.240 Even Catholics and Christians.
00:07:12.620 And that is how, after 100 and almost 150 years ago,
00:07:19.300 when these men died and said,
00:07:20.860 no, we give up polygamy.
00:07:23.720 The case of like,
00:07:25.100 Mulumba, who had several women,
00:07:26.900 was convinced,
00:07:28.480 and then he also convinced his wives,
00:07:32.000 that my religion, this religion,
00:07:34.420 allows me to have only one wife.
00:07:37.120 So settle there, settle there,
00:07:38.600 be on your own,
00:07:39.600 so that I can,
00:07:41.020 we can follow the way of Jesus Christ.
00:07:42.920 That was courageous and remarkable.

00:08:34.020 because he was making advances towards this.
00:08:36.840 I think that is the basis for much of our faith
00:08:42.820 and our resistance,
00:08:46.120 that if the martyrs were able to do this,
00:08:51.020 ignorant as they were,
00:08:52.640 way back in the years,
00:08:55.760 why don't we continue doing it
00:08:57.860 and being courageous enough.
00:09:00.280 So, I think the Ugandan martyrs,
00:09:01.980 the blood shed by the Ugandan martyrs,
00:09:04.900 is still giving us life,
00:09:08.780 in way of resisting the evil.
00:09:11.840 and the kind of those who want to come
00:09:17.500 and take away our values,
00:09:20.460 and start and bring new ones.
00:09:24.640 But I understand that some,
00:09:26.140 as I said,
00:09:28.240 who think that Mwanga was right.
00:09:32.480 Mwanga was right,
00:09:33.660 because he was killing these people
00:09:35.760 who were against,
00:09:37.100 who had,
00:09:37.800 instead of listening to him,
00:09:40.980 as a king,
00:09:42.060 they were listening to
00:09:42.800 other people from another country.
00:09:45.400 So, they are kind of rebels.
00:09:47.580 What would the chief do?
00:09:48.580 What did the king do?
00:09:49.520 What did the leader of society do?
00:09:51.660 If somebody comes to invade,
00:09:53.660 invade your people,
00:09:55.480 and change their mentality,
00:09:58.720 who was right to kill them?

00:10:01.680 yes, the Ugandan martyrs,
00:10:03.300 we have a treasure.

00:10:06.300 it's not only enough in Uganda,
00:10:08.780 but this treasure has been embraced

00:10:14.620 the whole of Africa in general.

00:10:18.940 people come in big numbers
00:10:21.240 from different countries of Africa,
00:10:25.500 of different languages,
00:10:26.940 and we gather together
00:10:27.940 and joyfully celebrate
00:10:29.680 the courage of the Ugandan martyrs.
00:10:33.640 We are also lucky that
00:10:34.820 this day has been coming,
00:10:36.800 also international,
00:10:38.160 that even the developed world,
00:10:41.300 you know,
00:10:42.140 people from America,
00:10:43.280 from Canada,
00:10:44.020 from Europe,
00:10:45.400 even from Australia,
00:10:47.580 come and join us
00:10:50.000 in celebrating the courage
00:10:52.160 of the Ugandan martyrs.
00:10:53.920 These people are so young,
00:10:55.600 not that much old,
00:10:56.700 like myself,
00:10:57.540 and they chose to say,
00:11:00.380 no,
00:11:00.620 we go against this new development.
00:11:03.440 That is not African.
00:11:05.720 It's not African,
00:11:07.500 and it is a shame
