00:02:04.600 The man who became Pope Benedict XVI,
00:02:07.620 while he headed up the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith,
00:02:10.520 made a public statement directed to the bishops of the Catholic Church
00:02:14.980 saying that silence about the Church's teachings
00:02:18.500 regarding the spiritual harm of homosexual acts
00:02:21.600 presents a false charity,
00:02:24.180 which is, in his words,
00:02:25.400 neither caring nor pastoral.
00:02:28.280 It was a 1986 CDF document entitled
00:02:31.980 Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church
00:02:34.440 on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons.
00:02:37.880 The document emphasized the necessity of,
00:02:41.100 and I quote,
00:02:41.540 clearly stating that homosexual activity
00:02:45.060 is immoral, end quote.
00:02:47.420 The instruction to the bishops of the world
00:02:49.580 on homosexuality signed by then-Cardinal Ratzinger,
00:02:52.940 who of course later became Pope Benedict,
00:02:55.020 added these words, quote,
00:02:56.720 But we wish to make it clear
00:02:58.740 that departure from the Church's teaching
00:03:01.040 or silence about it
00:03:02.820 in an effort to provide pastoral care
00:03:05.180 is neither caring nor pastoral.
00:03:07.240 It continued,
00:03:08.760 Only what is true can ultimately be pastoral.
00:03:12.460 The neglect of the Church's position
00:03:14.440 prevents homosexual men and women
00:03:16.240 from receiving the care that they need
00:03:18.840 and deserve, end quote.
00:03:21.640 And that is exactly what Father James Martin
00:03:24.740 is doing in encouraging the Church
00:03:27.120 to bless same-sex unions.
00:03:28.580 He is not being loving,
00:03:30.100 not being pastoral,
00:03:31.380 and in supporting his attack on the faith,
00:03:34.460 Pope Francis, too, is harming the faithful,
00:03:38.460 especially those who suffer
00:03:40.520 from same-sex attraction.

00:03:58.240 St. Paul warned in 2 Timothy 4
00:04:01.420 when he said, and I quote,
00:04:02.460 For the time will come
00:04:04.700 when they will not endure sound doctrine,
00:04:07.180 but according to their own desires
00:04:08.760 they will heap to themselves
00:04:10.580 teachers having itching ears.
00:04:13.000 But St. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles,
00:04:15.620 strictly directed all bishops,
00:04:17.600 he was writing Bishop Timothy at the time,
00:04:19.460 to fulfill the ministry of evangelizing.
00:04:22.200 Nevertheless, he said, and I quote,
00:04:24.200 and this is in the Scriptures,
00:04:25.080 I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ,
00:04:29.240 who shall judge the living and the dead
00:04:31.040 by his coming and his kingdom,
00:04:33.760 preach the word,
00:04:34.800 be insistent in season and out of season,
00:04:37.260 reprove, entreat,
00:04:38.620 rebuke in all patience and doctrine.

00:04:43.200 So let's look at the example,
00:04:45.060 for instance, of Pope Benedict XVI
00:04:47.460 and the Vatican under him
00:04:49.060 and at the time of Pope St. John Paul II.
00:04:52.020 Second, in 2005,
00:04:54.560 Cardinal Alfonso LĂłpez Trujillo,
00:04:56.880 who was at the time president
00:04:58.060 of the Pontifical Council for the Family,
00:05:00.060 gave one of the strongest statements
00:05:01.680 defending the traditional family
00:05:03.140 ever voiced in the church.
00:05:05.040 Cardinal Trujillo said,
00:05:06.660 parliaments which, quote,
00:05:08.100 open the way for same-sex marriage,
00:05:10.420 destroy piece by piece
00:05:11.960 the institution of the family,
00:05:13.600 the most valuable heritage of peoples
00:05:15.700 and humanity, end quote.
00:05:17.660 He called homosexual marriage,
00:05:19.580 and I quote,
00:05:20.020 a crime which represents
00:05:22.020 the destruction of the world,
00:05:24.620 end quote.
00:05:25.480 And speaking of adoption of children
00:05:28.180 by homosexual couples,
00:05:29.980 Cardinal Trujillo said,
00:05:31.240 and I quote,
00:05:32.140 this would destroy the child's future.
00:05:35.260 It would be an act of moral violence
00:05:38.160 against the child, end quote.
00:05:41.120 With those strong words,
00:05:43.380 he awoke many to the dangers
00:05:45.320 of the worldwide assault on the family.
00:05:47.460 Importantly, the Cardinal explained
00:05:50.460 that it was out of love
00:05:53.440 that the church was pointing out these dangers.
00:05:56.460 Love not only for society at large,
00:05:58.300 but also for homosexuals themselves.

00:06:01.600 as I have said many times,
00:06:04.120 homosexual peoples must be respected,
00:06:07.020 loved, and assisted.
00:06:08.240 We must help them overcome this situation
