00:00:33.040 Well, it is the wounds of Christ appearing in someone,

00:00:41.560 In fact, the first occurrence of this might have been right in apostolic times.

00:00:47.140 If you read St. Paul's writing, he actually says it in the book of Galatians.

00:00:53.860 He says, and I'll quote it for you.

00:00:55.980 He says, from henceforth, let no man be troublesome to me,

00:00:59.300 for I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus in my body.

00:01:04.060 Now, it could have been referring to other things, of course.

00:01:07.040 You know, he was whipped for the Lord and so on and so forth.

00:01:09.640 So, he had a lot of marks, surely, on his body.

00:01:11.880 But he uses, as Taylor Marshall points out in one of his shows,

00:01:15.520 the word stigmata.

00:01:16.620 So, there's that possibility that St. Paul, the apostle,

00:01:19.560 or the apostle of the Gentiles, himself had the stigmata.

00:01:22.320 But the first recorded case of the stigmata was with St. Francis of Assisi,

00:01:29.060 who lived, of course, in the 1200s.

00:01:31.240 Now, that stigmata, he said to have received the wounds of Christ in his hands

00:01:37.240 and in his feet and in his side a couple of years before his death.

00:01:42.020 But this was widely recorded.

00:01:44.540 In fact, there's a witness to this in Pope Alexander IV.

00:01:51.400 And so, you have eyewitnesses of that caliber giving this testimony.

00:01:56.320 And it didn't only happen to men.

00:01:58.640 In fact, St. Catherine of Siena, a saint who lived in the 1300s,

00:02:04.220 she, too, experienced the stigmata as well.

00:02:07.680 In fact, in more modern times,

00:02:09.280 there's a very well-known case of the stigmata in Padre Pio,

00:02:14.360 or Saint Pio of Petroclina.

00:02:17.000 He went for decades, having suffered,

00:02:21.160 and it is a suffering, the stigmata.

00:02:23.280 He wore, as you probably remember,

00:02:25.500 those brown gloves with the fingers out

00:02:28.120 so that he could not bleed all over the place.

00:02:30.920 And, of course, it was a distraction for people and for him as well.

00:02:33.740 But he had many, many doctors examine him

00:02:37.140 at the behest of religious superiors and so on.

00:02:41.380 And surely he suffered with this manifestation,

00:02:46.020 this bleeding which happened.

00:02:47.700 And very strange stuff, I'm sure, for many, many people.

00:02:50.760 But what it is, is a representation of the wounds of Christ.

00:02:53.960 These very good men and women suffered,

00:02:56.860 and suffered joyfully in union with Christ.

00:02:59.840 So, it is a uniting of oneself with the suffering of Christ.

00:03:04.220 And that's what the saints, and that's what we are all called to do.

00:03:09.760 more common, interestingly, in women than in men.

00:03:13.100 Therese Neumann, who's very well known as a mystic in Germany,

00:03:16.220 experienced the stigmata.

00:03:18.140 The visionary that many of us have been talking about

00:03:23.980 Marie-Julie Jahani, also had the stigmata,

00:03:27.840 as did one of the new saints,

00:03:30.660 sainted in 2019,

00:03:33.880 first beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.

00:03:39.300 Her name was Miriam Therese Shiramel.

00:03:42.320 She's from Kerala in India.

00:03:44.480 She, too, had the stigmata.

00:03:45.900 So, these are mysterious wounds of Christ on people,

00:03:50.720 and it's very hard to argue with them
