00:17:53.900And you might ask yourself, well, what is the law?
00:17:56.600And you could say, well, it's the word received from on high.
00:17:59.780And there's truth in that, but it's an incomplete truth because the law is also a reflection of the customs and the behaviors of the people, of any people who've managed to organize a mature self and a collective community that functions as a consensual structure across time.
00:18:27.460So imagine that as you mature, you move away from the demand that every one of your instinctive whims be gratified now to the realization that at times you have to forego what's of immediate value so that you can thrive and develop over the medium and long run.
00:18:56.860And so as you mature, you substitute your narrow self bound to the moment.
00:19:03.320You substitute for that the iteration of your future self out into the decades of your adulthood.
00:19:09.780And you make the sacrifices of your whim in the present that increase the probability of your future well-being and continued growth.
00:19:59.680And that pattern of future sacrifice and communal maturity
00:20:04.600is the essence of the behavioral patterns of a sustainable, productive, hospitable, and generous society.
00:20:17.020And there's nothing about that that's morally relative.
00:20:19.440It's very unlikely that that situation, balanced that well, will emerge, just as unlikely as it is that you'll attain a continual state of productive and generous harmony within the confines of your marriage or your family.
00:20:34.840but that doesn't mean that it that state has no existence and it doesn't mean
00:20:40.480that the pattern of that existence is arbitrary quite the contrary it means
00:20:44.620that the harmony that prevails between your current self and your future self
00:20:49.720and you as an isolated individual and everyone else is a is the straight
00:20:54.600narrow path that leads up Jacob's ladder to the kingdom of God that's what it
00:20:59.320means symbolically right and that's built into the structure of that's built
00:21:04.240into the structure of reality itself and the law that comes to moses is an explicit representation
00:21:11.520of that underlying reality and moses has access to it first because he sits as judge and second
00:21:17.600because in a burst of revelatory intuition he can make explicit what up till then has only been
00:59:58.900so that all the israelites can see it so this is a a substantial sculpture so that all the
01:00:06.900israelites can see it and if they come and gaze upon it they will be immune to the poison of the
01:00:13.220serpents okay what does that mean the first thing it means is the same thing that the symbol of the
01:00:21.940physician has meant for 3 000 years right because the symbol of the physician is a staff with a
01:00:29.140serpent wrapped around it and that's the asclepius symbol of healing and it's a representation of the
01:00:37.940snake and tree motif that's also characteristic of Moses staff because in
01:00:44.820the story of Moses when he encounters the magicians of the Egyptian court
01:00:50.380Moses throws his staff upon the ground that's tradition it transforms itself
01:00:56.300into chaos that's the serpent and Moses is the master of order in chaos and the
01:01:03.360egyptian magicians duplicate the feet throwing their staffs to the ground turning them into
01:01:11.120serpents and the serpent from moses staff eats all the serpents of the egyptian magicians which
01:01:16.880indicates that the real thing is more than the real thing is more than the match for the
01:01:24.640propagandistic magic of the corrupt court right all that's all that's echoed in the image of the
01:01:34.240serpent on the staff there's an idea associated with healing that comes from the Greeks
01:01:43.040embodied in the word pharmakon which is the source of the word pharmacy and pharmakon means poison and
01:01:49.920cure and what it means is a little bit of what poisons you cures you and what
01:01:55.320that means is that you'll grow and develop in proportion to your ability to
01:02:01.020face the things that terrify you right and that's what Moses calls upon his
01:02:06.600people to do inspired by the Word of God not to become the inhabitants of a of a
01:02:19.200landscape devoid of threat and safe like infants are safe in the home but become but to become
01:02:26.880masters of even what's poisonous so that they can be immune to what to the worst things that can
01:02:33.520possibly be thrown at them which is what you do when you encourage your children to develop like
01:02:39.440they should develop right competence not safety that's what encouragement means and that's
01:02:45.760That's what happens symbolically when God calls upon the Israelites to face what terrifies them so they can become immune to the poison even of their own sins.
