00:05:56.260 They're supposedly key to the Republican Party's outreach to young people,

00:05:59.780 which is obviously a critically important objective.

00:06:02.660 And they just completely caved right away.

00:06:07.040 Now, I'm not going to quote extensively from the Politico hit piece or use any of the conservatives'

00:06:13.500 names that are mentioned in it.

00:06:14.620 Instead, I'll show you the precise moment that everybody on the right,

00:06:19.940 from the party's leaders on down, should have just stopped taking this article seriously.

00:09:10.900 you could have a group chat that's going for years and you never even look at it.

00:09:14.120 The idea that you're even aware of every single thing that's in the group chat is ridiculous.

00:09:25.900 At least one person in the Telegram chat works in the Trump administration.

00:09:29.780 He serves as a senior advisor in the office of general counsel within the U.S. Small Business Administration.

00:09:34.420 He did not have much to say in the chat, but he didn't offer any pushback against the offensive rhetoric in it either.

00:09:39.360 He declined to comment.

00:09:40.480 He didn't send any messages in the group chat saying, say, fellas, this is inappropriate.

00:09:49.400 Hey, fellas, let's, hey, come on, guys.

00:09:52.300 He didn't do that.

00:09:53.440 And so he's guilty.

00:09:56.500 This is the purest possible form of guilt by association.

00:09:58.940 If you're a member of a massive group chat, then according to Politico,

00:10:02.220 you're responsible for everything they say across tens of thousands of pages of messages over a period of seven months.

00:10:08.140 You need to know every single thing that was said.

00:10:11.200 And if there's anything in it that was inappropriate,

00:10:14.380 you need to speak up right there in the group chat and denounce it.

00:10:20.160 And of course, within seconds, this became a Democrat Party talking point.

00:10:23.400 Here's Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, quote,

00:10:25.840 This is some vile stuff, and these aren't teenagers.

00:10:32.500 Yes, the guy who works for Trump, who didn't say anything quoted in the article,

00:10:35.860 is now being smeared as a racist who loves Hitler.

00:10:40.040 And by the way, buried around 50 paragraphs down in Politico's article, you'll find this line, quote,

00:10:44.040 Many of the slurs, epithets, and violent language used in the chat often appear to be intended as jokes.

00:10:52.140 Which is, by the way, remember Jay Jones was not joking.

00:10:56.940 And he was clear that he wasn't joking.

00:10:59.420 He was very serious.

00:11:00.680 He wants his political opponents to die.

00:11:04.300 He'd be happy to do it himself.

00:11:08.140 Now, here's one example of these jokes, these actual jokes, as reported by Politico.

00:11:16.720 Someone in the Michigan Young Republican says that he had some back and forth with a vice chair in Michigan

00:11:21.660 who told him that the current chair of the organization isn't working out.

00:11:24.700 But on the bright side, he says,

00:11:25.860 My delegates will vote for the most right-wing person.

00:11:28.040 So they're excited about replacing the chair with someone who's very right-wing.

00:11:31.080 And then somebody replies,

00:11:32.540 Great.

00:11:33.100 I love Hitler.

00:11:33.980 And in response, somebody replies with a laughing emoji.

00:11:39.280 Pretty good indication, by the way, when you see the laughing emoji that it's a joke.

00:11:44.980 But this is what Politico put in the headline of the article.

00:11:49.540 They made it seem like there was some serious discussion among young Republicans about how great Hitler is.

00:11:55.280 But then when you read the context, they're obviously joking, using an extreme example for effect.

00:12:03.400 You know, it's saying, oh, yeah, I'm really right-wing.

00:12:08.380 You know, I love Hitler.

00:12:09.380 It's like that.

00:12:10.220 It's clearly a sarcastic joke, very much in the vein of the kinds of sarcastic jokes that right-wingers make all the time.

00:12:16.700 You know, it's a bit like somebody going to use a port-a-potty or something and coming back out and announcing to his friends that, you know, he really dropped an atom bomb in there.

00:12:24.640 No one who hears that is going to think, well, my God, this guy endorses the use of atom bombs within the borders of the United States.

00:12:33.800 But if you take the remark out of context and blast it in a headline in Politico, then you're probably going to convince a lot of people that this person is a domestic terrorist who's planting dirty bombs in public toilets.

00:12:43.080 That's why, in general, it's a bad idea to take private jokes between small numbers of people, many of whom are not public figures at all, and not relevant publicly at all, and then publish them in a news article.

00:13:05.440 Quote, the private rhetoric isn't happening in a vacuum.

00:13:08.620 It comes amid a widespread coarsening of the broader political discourse and has incendiary and racially offensive tropes from the right become increasingly common in public debate.

00:13:16.420 Last month, Trump posted an artificial intelligence-generated video that showed House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a sombrero besides Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer,

00:13:24.680 whose fabricated remarks were about trading free health care for immigrant votes, a false long-running GOP trope.

00:13:30.440 The sombrero meme has been widely used to mock Democrats as the government shutdown wears on.

00:13:37.420 Okay, so that's the official position of Politico.

00:13:42.740 And if you're a conservative who has taken this article at face value and spread it around and amplified it and issued your denunciations,

00:14:39.940 So as Ed Cox, the chair of the New York State GOP, along with the North Carolina Federation of Young Republicans, the Republican Party of Arizona, the Missouri GOP, the Kansas GOP, and many, many others.
